April 29, 2014, (FHTNC)--Navy Seaman Recruit Anevdy Re-gales, son of Katherine Erhardt of Christiansted St. Croix, U.S.Virgin Island, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Re-cruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Regales completed a varietyof training which included classroom study and practical instruc-tion on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and sur-vival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was alsoplaced on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This ex-ercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to suc-ceed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize thebasic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and en-durance in each recruit through the practical application of basicNavy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commit-ment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into ac-count what it means to be a Sailor. Regales is a 2013 graduate of Corinth Central High School,Corinth, NY.

Tips On Saving Money With An HVAC System

(NAPS)—Thereʼs good news for homeowners who want to reduce their energy costs. With alittle bit of homework, savings are possible.According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most Americans are paying morefor electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility billnow about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating andcooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it thelargest energy expense for most homes. To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire® brand of heating and air conditioning recom-mend the following:• Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild temperatures andlowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cooling system work less tomaintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accommodate yourfamilyʼs time away from home and sleeping schedules will also help to ensure that your systemis operating only when you need it.• Install a dehumidifier. Humidity can make the air feel hotter and heavier in warm weather. Byremoving the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavilyon your heating and cooling system to make the air comfortable.

• Perform regular maintenance. Clean air filters, seal anyduct leaks and make sure the areas around your systemare clear of obstructions. According to the EPA, improperinsulation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 per-cent.• Have your existing home comfort system inspected andserviced by a qualified technician. The technician will makesure your system is working properly and at peak effi-ciency. A knowledgeable technician will also be able to rec-ommend a new, more efficient replacement system, suchas ENERGY STAR®–qualified equipment that can helpyou save money on energy bills. • Learn more. To learn more about efficient products thatcan help you save money and energy, or to find a heat-ing and cooling contractor, visit www.luxaire.com.

According to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent ofthe energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

DID YOU KNOW? Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weedgrowth while still allowing air, oxygen and water to flow to andfrom the soil. Landscape fabrics are a chemical-free way to pre-vent weed growth, endearing them to eco-friendly homeowners.Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensivemethod to prevent weed growth, as they can be effective for sev-eral years, during which homeowners can expect to perform littleor no maintenance. In addition, many homeowners prefer land-scape fabrics because they can help the soil effectively maintainmoisture during dry periods, when gardens might otherwise behighly susceptible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabriccan be covered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.

9 WAYS TO IMPROVE CURB APPEAL Homeowners who want their homes to make strong firstimpressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes withstrong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcomingfeel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal need not be ex-pensive, and the following are a handful of ways to im-prove the appearance of your home.

1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one witha custom design. This helps the home stand out fromother properties in the neighborhood.

2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border betweenthe driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept.

3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting.Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverseat night.

4. Clean a home's exterior to remove mildew or discol-orations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other out-door elements.

5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonalcolor. Homeowners without the time to plant can considercontainer gardens, which don't take much time to assem-ble but still add appeal to a home's exterior.

6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restorecolor.

7. Add shutters and accent trim to a home's exterior to im-prove on the beauty of the house.

8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stainto an existing fence.

9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways tomake entryways more impressive and inviting.

HOME TIP: If there is a cus-tom tile or specific design thatyou really like that is not withinyour budget for the entirekitchen or bathroom, thinkabout using it as an accent in-stead. Rely on less expensivetiles for much of the room, thensprinkle in the accent tiles forthe style you want. The fin-ished project will look high-end, but you will likely havestayed within your budget. Youalso can save money by shop-ping at a reuse center or onethat sells remnants and left-over materials from larger jobs. For example, it's possible tofind a piece of marble or gran-ite that would fit perfectly as acountertop in a bathroom.

DID YOU KNOW? Many homeowners prefer the look and durability of real hard-wood flooring. It can be exciting to install new flooring, and youmay be anxious to start transforming a room. But before divingright in, it's necessary to acclimate wood flooring to a home. Oth-erwise, you may end up with buckled wood or other problems.Hardwood flooring needs to sit in the room where it will be in-stalled for anywhere between five and 10 days or in adherenceto the manufacturer recommendations. This gives the new floor-ing time to adjust to the humidity level and temperature of thehome. Natural wood shrinks and expands due to temperaturefluctuations, which is why it is essential to match the conditionsin the home before working with the flooring. The boards can beacclimated in the boxes (with the ends opened) or outside of theboxes.

PROTECTING AGAINST SUN DAMAGE WHILE IN A CAR(NAPSI)—The average American spends more than 101 min-utes a day in a car. Unfortunately, what many drivers and pas-sengers fail to realize is that when they are in a car, not all thedanger they face is on the road. Both drivers and passengers are often exposed to harmful ul-traviolet A (UVA) rays, particularly from the side windows of thecars in which they ride.“Damage from certain kinds of ultraviolet rays is cumulative,”says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, vice chair of the dermatology de-partment at St. Louis University. “These rays penetrate deepinto the skin and can silently accelerate the aging process, cause wrinkles and even skin cancer.”Fortunately, adding a UVA-blocking film or tint to car windowscan be an effective way to help block damaging rays and pro-tect yourself while you drive. For example, a range of window film options, sold under thebrand name LLumar, provide UV protection. Thereʼs even aclear film that appeals to those who do not want a darker win-dow appearance, or where the use of dark films is prohibitedby state law. When applied over ordinary automotive glass, thisfilmʼs virtually invisible protection blocks more than 99 percentof harmful UV rays.* LLumar window film acts as “sunscreen”—offering daily sun protection with a one-time application. To learn more, visit www.llumar.com.
