Overview of a battery storage system
Who can benefit from ba.ery storage? • Small business owners
• People on medical assist devices (non-‐‑critical)
• People who cannot or will not use generators
• Commercial accounts – reduce demand charges
• Areas vulnerable to extreme weather events (shore &
resort properties)
• Seasonal or 2nd home backup power & security
Battery storage landscape is changing
Advantages of BSS over generators Eliminates: • Carbon emissions • CO poisoning risk • Noise • Need for fuel storage • Fuel escalation risk • Risk of equipment theft Advantages: • Multi-‐‑faceted value • Significantly lower service time & costs • Can be sited indoors and in locations where generators
are not allowed
Business case models for ba.ery storage
Value proposition Current status Emergency back up power Today Off grid power Today Commercial accounts for Demand Response
Today – to specific electric utility programs
Self consumption future Energy arbitrage future Interactive microgrids future
Due to fossil fuel use and costs, engine based generators will remain mainly for back up power
Regulatory Landscape Primary Codes and standards: • NFPA70 -‐‑ National Electrical Code
• UL9540 – Standard for Energy Storage Systems and Equipment
• Many UL Sub-‐‑Standards (UL1973 – Stationary Ba@eries, UL1741 – Inverters)
• IEEE1547 (Grid Interconnection) & IEEE2030 (Smart Grid)
NEC
UL Standards
IEEE Standards
NEC areas of key focus for ba.ery storage ü Scope defines a ba.ery storage system ü Set definitions
Example “Storage Ba@ery” “ A ba@ery comprised of one or more rechargeable cells of the lead-‐‑acid, nickel-‐‑cadmium, or other rechargeable electrochemical types.”
ü Wiring and equipment supplied with ba.eries ü Over-‐‑current protection ü Means of disconnection
ü Insulation by specific type of ba.eries
NEC areas of key focus for ba.ery storage
ü Racks and Trays ü Ba.ery system locations ü System ventilation ü Guarding of live parts ü Working Space ü Ba.ery vents
Non-integrated battery storage installations can lead to real problems
Knowing the ba.ery chemistry is key with NEC
Regulatory Landscape.. How About Lithium?
Boeing chose a particularly risky type of chemical makeup in its lithium ion ba6ery, one that provides more power but does not stand up well to overheating [Lux Research]
• UL 1642 - Lithium Batteries
• United Nations (UN) Section 38.3 - Transport of Dangerous Goods
Importance of proper sizing of systems
Calculating for the specific property
Calculating for the ba.ery bank
First responders concerns
With more extreme weather, more homeowners now want back up power (Irene, Sandy, 2014 Winter Polar Vortex ...) More people working from home offices and carrying power usage to extremes. Fire response will not know if there is a backup power source. Safety for first responders must be considered in the installation process.
Residential back up power is growing
Extreme weather, and summer peak electricity demands disrupting businesses who now want back up power. Commercial fires can destroy one or many stores along busy corridors. Fast spreading fire often start in the rear and travel with lightning speed toward the front of the store. Grid power and any secondary power supplies is the first thing that must be disconnected so firefighters can search for trapped victims.
Commercial back up power is growing
When AC systems are on backup power systems, and that backup system is not known to fire departments, the AC system can restart and change the fire conditions inside the burning building. Fires have been sucked across vast distances by the return flow of AC systems. This can also compromise the roof structure and cause a collapse that may trap civilians and firefighters.
Air conditioning on back up power
Proper warning labels protect first responders
A most important consideration at all times
Communicate with all concerned parties 1. User/owner of the ba@ery storage system 2. Property owner if not same as user 3. Property insurance issuer considerations 4. Homeowners associations restrictions if any 5. Local township for permi@ing and inspection 6. First responders needs
Important for the installer: 1. Customer satisfaction 2. Strong word of mouth 3. Referrals
