Audi celebrates the companys centenary in 2009. The

brand lines up as deending champion in the DTM and has

the chance o winning the racing series or the third time in

succession. Audi approaches this task with an unchanged,

high-caliber driving squad. The DTM provides motorsport

at the highest level, which is very popular with the public

whether on television or at the race track. Every an can

relate to touring cars at rst glance.

As the 2008 nale the DTM demonstrated down to the last

meter just how exciting the sport is. This year the costs were

clearly reduced and the sport is even more attractive or the

manuacturers. The motorsport audience can be sure o one

thing: The DTM will produce thrilling

    sport again throughout 2009.

As the title deender, Audi starts to the 2009 DTM season with

an unchanged lineup o nine actory drivers and a version o

the A4 DTM which has been subjected to urther development.

The squads aim is to clinch the title or the third time in a row

in the touring car championship that is being staged in ve

    European countries.

With a proven team and technology that has been improved

yet again, Audi is aiming to deend its historic result rom last

year in the 2009 season: In the brands up to now most

successul motorsport season, Audi successully deended

the DTM title or the rst time since 1991. On his way to

achieving the eat o winning the championship in 2008, Timo

Scheider clinched three single victories, while Mattias Ekstrm

contributed three urther exploits. In addition, the brands

track record reects eight pole positions. The new Audi A4

DTM in its dbut season has thus been the most successul

generation o an Audi DTM race touring car based on the A4

    model to date.

In 2009, the project o deending the title starts under

completely dierent auspices: In the year o Audis 100th

anniversary, and 25 years ater the original inception o the

DTM, Head o Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrichs squad

has the chance o bringing the title home to Ingolstadt and

Neckarsulm or the third time in a row. No manuacturer has

ever managed this eat beore. Ater entering the DTM in

2004, Audi won the championship three times, thus becomingthe most successul brand in recent DTM history.

We want to continue this impressive track record, explains

Dr. Wolgang Ullrich. Our drivers squad has played a major

role in the brands exploits. Thereore, we will start with an

unchanged lineup or the rst time. In terms o technology,

we have consistently subjected the most successul Audi

A4 DTM to date to urther development within the strict

connes o the regulations. Consequently, the R14 evolvedinto the R14 plus, which will take advantage o the great

potential o the successul model in an improved orm.

The R14 plus eatures detailed work in the area o the engine

and is primarily characterized by aerodynamic renement as

well as detailed solutions. As in the past, Audi Sport continued

developing the race car at its Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm locations.

For Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, title deender Timo

    Scheider (D), Mattias Ekstrm (S), the 2004 and 2007

champion, Martin Tomczyk (D) as well as Tom Kristensen

(DK), who with as many as eight victories at the 24 Hours o

Le Mans and ve overall exploits at the 12 Hours o Sebring

under his belt is the record holder in the worlds two most

important endurance races, will compete again. A new member

joining the squad is Katherine Legge (GB). In her 2008 dbutyear, the Briton was driving a two-year-old A4 or the customer

team Futurecom-TME. Now she will be contesting the series in

a 2008 car or the rst time.

Mike Rockeneller (D) and Markus Winkelhock (D) will continue

to compete or Audi Sport Team Rosberg rom Neustadt an

der Weinstrae at the wheel o two 2008-spec Audi A4 DTM

cars. Two race cars rom the same model year will be driven

by Oliver Jarvis (GB) and Alexandre Prmat (F) or Audi SportTeam Phoenix rom Meuspath in the Eiel region. Audi thus

concentrates its DTM commitment in the 2009 season on

three race teams. In addition, it is anticipated that the team o

Dr. Colin Kolles will privately eld three A4 cars.

Audi aims to win the DTM or the third

Three race cars from Audi Sport

Approximately 200 employees in Ingolstadt and

Neckarsulm are primarily responsible or developing and

testing the race cars. Audi Sport is afliated with AUDI AGs

Technical Development (TE) and is thereore answerable to

Michael Dick, Board Member or Technical Development.

Head o Audi Sport since November 1993 is Austrian Dr.

Wolgang Ullrich. Audi Sport was restructured and aligned

or the uture in 2007. Towards the end o 2009 Audi

Sport will complete the construction o the rst stageo a customer sport center in Ingolstadt or the new GT3

    motorsport program.

    New routes in customer sport

Audi has developed three race cars or the 2009 season:

The A4 DTM o the R14 plus model range as successor to the

R14 or the DTM, the R15 TDI as rst diesel race sportscar o

the second generation and the R8 LMS or international GT3

    customer motorsport.

While Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm continue to

look ater the actory motorsport program, the organization

or GT3 customer racing was systematically expanded.

Absolute responsibility or development is in the hands

o Audi Sport in Ingolstadt. At the same time two other

sites are integrated in this project: The bodyshell is taken

rom the quattro GmbH production line in Neckarsulm. The

engine or the race car originates rom Gyr in Hungary.

    Audi improves the

    winning model again

The Audi A4 DTM introduced last season set a record at

its dbut: With six victories, eight best times in qualiying

and the title win, it was the most successul DTM vehicle

based on the A4, which Audi has designed and built since its

return to the DTM in 2004. In accordance with the internal

    model designations, R11 (2004), R12 (2005), R12 plus

    (2006), R13 (2007) and R14 (2008), the current R14 plus

(2009) represents the sixth generation o the vehicle.

The engineers rom Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and

Neckarsulm were aced with a difcult task: the challenge

o improving the champions car rom the year beore yet

again, within unchanged connes o the regulations. All o

the principal design eatures o the touring race car, which

is based on a tubular rame and a carbon ber shell or the

driver, and powered by a 460-hp our-liter V8 engine, have

    remained the same.

The most clearly visible modication when the hood is

open is the air box on top o the engine, explains Ulrich

Baretzky, Head o Engine Development at Audi Sport. It

is a consequence o the requirements that arose rom

a new cooling air passage at the vehicles ront. The

charge changing process meaning the inow o resh

gas ollowing the outow o exhaust gas has been

optimized by the new intake plenum. Audi has also achieved

improvements in torque development and power output,in other words the engines drivability. One o many other

detailed optimizations concerns the more avorable oil

circuit. When summing up the total o their achievements,

the developers have to make a realistic assessment.

Basically, in the sixth year o continuous development, the

potential o any engine design has been ully exploited,

    says Ulrich Baretzky.

Wolgang Appel, Head o Vehicle Development, and his

team clearly dened some ocal areas with respect to the

development o the other components o the car as well.

Even though we compiled a list o about 80 minor or major

items on the whole vehicle, we clearly concentrated our

eorts on aerodynamics, says Appel. We modied various

aspects o the air ow around the vehicle, the diuser and

the ow through the engine compartment. A rear wingmounted rom the top, which promises to provide better

ow characteristics, is a conspicuous eature. This idea

made its dbut with the Audi R15 TDI Le Mans sports car

this year. The aerodynamic eects o new solutions are

rst calculated using computational uid dynamics (CFD),

ollowed by model wind tunnel testing and ultimately by

testing at AUDI AGs ull-scale wind tunnel.

Furthermore, the engineers ocused their attention on allaspects which contribute to maintaining the perormance

capability o the race car at consistent levels across the

racing distance o typically more than 60 minutes. Two

signicant actors determine the sporting result: the way

the car handles the deterioration o the tires over the course

o time as well as the reduction in vehicle mass caused by

the consumption o the uel in the tank. New components

o the braking system are an additional aspect. The British

manuacturer AP, who equips all DTM cars with a standard

system, presents clearly less massive brake calipers or the

2009 season. This inuences our choice o aerodynamic

ow toward the brake, explains Appel. The clearly

improved air ow through the calipers will also guaranteehigher consistency during the race.

Audi Head o Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich is certain:

With the R14 model last year we developed the most

competitive concept based on an A4 so ar. This race car

possesses enough potential to again ght or the place at

the top this year as the R14 plus. Ater all, our goal is to

    deend the title.

    Calculations made with the help

    o computational fuid dynamics

play a decisive role in the

    aerodynamics

    Unchanged

    strong squad

Never change a winning team this was the motto used

by Head o Audi Sport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich when selecting

the drivers or the 2009 season: The driver squad remains

unchanged to the previous season or the rst time since

the brands return to the DTM.

Timo Scheider earned start number one ater winning thetitle. The now 30-year-old German had a dream season:

In April 2008 he celebrated his rst career DTM win at

Oschersleben, in August at Brands Hatch his second. His

third victory o the season at the Hockenheim nale sealed

    his rst DTM championship win.

The Swede Mattias Ekstrm, DTM Champion a year beore,

again ought long and hard throughout the 2008 season

or the title. With three victories he completed Audis

excellent season and was third in the standings in the end.

Eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen rom Denmark

and Martin Tomczyk complete the line-up or the quartet o

2009 model Audi A4 DTM race cars. Audi Sport Team Abt

Sportsline receive a charming addition in the orm o a th

power: Katherine Legge drives an Audi A4 DTM rom 2008

    or the Kempten based squad.

The other year-old cars are elded by two proven teams:

Audi Sport Team Rosberg prepares the race cars or Markus

Winkelhock and Mike Rockeneller, who won the Le Mans

Series last year with Audi. His ormer team mate in the

cockpit, Frenchman Alexandre Prmat, competes or Audi

With 83 races and two DTM titles to his credit the

30-year-old Swede belongs already or a long time to the

most successul drivers in the series. Even though his

perormance and three individual victories last year were

not enough or the title Ekstrm can look back proudly. He

ought till the end or the championship and in doing so

set a personal record. With 13 DTM race victories or Audiduring his career he has now surpassed the previous record

    held by Hans-Joachim Stuck.

Between races the Scandinavian re-charges his batteries in

his Swiss domicile Salenstein. He ollows the MotoGP series

In 2009, the DTM enters its tenth season since its rebirth

in the year 2000. The series abbreviation, which once

    stood or Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschat, today

represents the most popular international touring car

racing series. In television, but also in the stands it attracts

the largest number o spectators alongside Formula 1. The

DTM broke yet another record during the 2008 season:

165,000 spectators visited the nale in October won by

Audi driver Timo Scheider on the way to being crowned the

    new Champion.

The concept promises pure excitement and energy:

In qualiying, now comprised o our parts, urther

competitors are knocked-out ater each time segment. The

extremely entertaining near 70 minute long sprint races are

interrupted by two mandatory pit stops. The DTM grid is a

with eight victories at the 24 Hours o Le Mans.

    Internationality is key

With its driver line-up and calendar the DTM also

demonstrates its internationality in the 2009 season:19 drivers representing seven nations met the public at the

DTM presentation 2009 in Dsseldor. The series makes six

starts in ront o German ans, our times in ront o the

European public in France, Great Britain, the Netherlands

    and Spain.

    Complex regulations

Audi and Mercedes-Benz, two o the worlds most renowned

automobile manuacturers, are committed to the DTM.

Fans will see three Audi A4 DTM generations in action

throughout the 2009 season. Dierent base weights

improve the perormance parity: Cars rom 2009 compete

with a basic weight o 1,050 kilograms, cars one year older

with 1,030 kilos and cars two years older with 1,010 kilos.

In addition, ballast weight is imposed subject to a cars

Timo Scheider about the fow o the track

Hockenheim probably has almost every conceivable type

o corner and radii. There are very, very ast kinks, hairpin

bends and corners with generous run-o areas. The race

track itsel is very attractive. Due to the sequence o corners

a track unolds around which you can achieve an extremely

uid rhythm. The Motodrom is sensational, when you enter

it you use the curb on the let-hand side. You have to be very

careul on concrete suraces, grass paving blocks and grass.

One mistake and youre parked in the wall. There are plenty

o overtaking places: heading towards turns 2, at the end

o the Parabolica towards the hairpin bend, into the Sachs

Kurve and probably also in the Opel corners.

Katherine Legge about the speed at the EuroSpeedway

I like the EuroSpeedway Lausitz. It has something o

everything: Fast and slow corners, the track is challenging

and there are enough places to overtake. It is one o the

tracks I really look orward to. The tarmac surace is very

uniorm around the entire circuit except several sections

that are very aggressive. The corner which I nd the most

appealing is the rst one. I like the hard braking just beore

turning-in. You drive the last section beore the start

and nish in the oval, approach the rst corner ater the

straight at extremely high-speed beore braking very hard.

Markus Winkelhock about traction and tires

The Norisring looks a lot easier than it really is. You have

to brake long and hard, need a good car balance and

plenty o traction. The circuit is a lot o un. Its in the

amily: My uncle Joachim always enjoyed driving here.

The track is very bumpy. I it rains the car can aquaplane

easily here on the standing water. The circuit is murderous

on the brakes. Although the tarmac is rough the tires do

not wear very much, you just have to be careul that you

dont spin the wheels. The corner I like the most is the

let-hander exiting the chicane. To build up speed, you get

so close to the wall on the right that the wing mirror is

scratched. During my career I once used up eight wing-

    mirrors on a single weekend.

    Zandvoort (NL)

Mattias Ekstrm about the reduced practice time

I like the races in Zandvoort the best. The track is comprised

o many great corners, crests and compressions. You get

into a good rhythm. At the start there is virtually no grip.

The grip increases with every lap, which you really eel with

new tires. Since the new regulations allow less practice,

less rubber will go down on the track. For this reason the

tarmac could be harder on the tire. When it rains you should

drive on the rough tarmac and not ollow the ideal line on

the very new tarmac, otherwise things get tricky. There are

plenty o opportunities to overtake. Its one o the ew race

tracks where you can still win rom ourth or even th on

the grid. Zandvoort means a lot to me: I won my rst race

here in 2002 and Abt Sportsline gained the title.

    Oschersleben (D)

    Tom Kristensen about technical versatility

Oschersleben is a owing circuit with several very ast

corners and lots o changes o direction. A good balance

is thereore absolutely imperative. You have to turn-in to

the slow corners aggressively and come out with plenty o

momentum. Its a circuit at which every car needs a wide

range o qualities. There are circuits where it is mainly a

question o traction or high-speed, such as the Norisring.

At Oschersleben you have to drive with huge commitment.

The grip in general is low and only increases ater a lot o

laps. The track surace is very gentle to the tires. The track

is very slippery in the rain. Especially in the rst corner,

the tires have virtually no grip whatsoever in the wet. You

are conronted with a decisive moment right at the start

    o a lap.

Mike Rockeneller about the crucial corners

With its mix o corners o dierent radii the track is ar

rom simple. It is a modern track with ne grain asphalt.

Traction, clean driving, braking or the rst corner rom

high-speed all very challenging. The short loop is difcult,

the Bit Corner is un. A perectly set-up car is crucial. In bad

weather you can either distance yoursel rom the rubber on

the ideal line, but also drive exactly on it. This works really

well with the Dunlop rain tires. Ater the short loop there is

a let-hand curve. You lean on the curb on the outside here.

You tend to drive the Bit Corner too quickly, then you lose

momentum in the Hatzenbach-Bogen. Its important to

nd a good compromise, to take a lot momentum into the

corner and get on the pedal early again.

    Brands Hatch (GB)

Oliver Jarvis about his home race

Brands Hatch has a lot o character. Paddock Hill is one

o the best corners anywhere. You have to brake without

being able to see into the corner. Also, i you are a little

o line youll have massive problems at the exit. The track

is very short, but nevertheless challenging and physicallydemanding. The atmosphere is something very special. The

circuit is much lower than the grandstands, so you can see

almost the entire acility rom the stands. Its like being in

a ootball stadium. The tarmac is smooth to the tires, which

is why you can make several runs during qualiying with

just one set o tires. The pole position is not necessarily an

advantage. Because the start-nish straight slopes towards

the pit wall the position on the outside can provide better

grip than the one o the astest driver on the inside.

Martin Tomczyk about the line at Barcelona

Barcelona is a antastic circuit, which is all about maximum

speed in many places. Ater the long straight and the

back straight the aerodynamics and brakes must also be

excellent. Your car needs more traction than previous years

due to the new chicane. Thereore all aspects are required. The best solution is that you drive a car which is well-

balanced in every aspect. You can drive dierent lines in the

rain, but not everywhere. In two or three corners the line is

dictated to you. The tarmac is only moderately rough. Weve

never had excessive tire wear at Barcelona. Overtaking is

undamentally well possible. My personal highlight was

    winning here in 2006.

Alexandre Prmat about the rollercoaster ride

A very ast track awaits us, perhaps the astest in the

DTM, and there are rises and alls. You drive through the

nal corner beore the start and nish at 200 kph. You

cant see the exit o the corner due to a slight drop. Itll

be really interesting when the entire eld storms throughthis section. The tarmac is inconsistent, in some parts very

aggressive to the tires, and in others very gentle. To win at

Dijon it appears to me that your grid position is even more

important than elsewhere. I love the circuit and I have

ond memories o a win in Formula Renault and testing in

Formula 3. I was a little surprised when we tested here with

the DTM. It just looks antastic when our cars are pounding

around the track. The ans will love it.

    Hockenheim (D)

Timo Scheider about the track conditions

Hockenheim is a modern and balanced track. The tarmac is

slightly bumpy. The grip level is dierent in the Motodrom

compared to the rest o the track. The tarmac is coarse

grained around the majority o the circuit which means

that it has large pores. Nevertheless you can cover verylong distances on one set o tires. The level o grip doesnt

change signicantly with a change in temperature. I the

weather is bad the Sachs Kurve can be a critical point. I

you make a mistake here in the rain you either end up in the

gravel or the tire barrier. At other points the large run-o

areas tend to orgive driving errors. You can many dierent

lines through the Sachs Kurve inside, middle or outside.
