Audi competed in the 24 Hours o Le Mans or the rst

time ten years ago. The brand recorded eight victories

since its rst start in 1999 and has made history with

the R8 and R10 TDI models. Both won on their Le Mans

premiere and represents Vorsprung durch Technik. The

Audi R8 introduced the gasoline direct injection TFSI

and with the R10 TDI in 2006 a diesel sports car won

the 24 Hours o Le Mans or the rst time. The Audi R15

TDI ollows this tradition: It diers radically rom its

predecessor and symbolizes technological innovation such

as the lithium ion battery as component o an innovative

vehicle power supply system. The new Audi R15 TDI won on

Audi has contested the Le Mans 24 Hour race since 1999,

and has recorded eight victories with actory or customer

supported teams in probably the worlds hardest endurance

race. Ten years ater its Le Mans debut, and to mark its

tenth anniversary, the brand with the our rings has a

special chance: Just like the Audi R8 in the year 2000 and

with the Audi R10 TDI during the 2006 season, the new

Audi R15 TDI aims to win the motorsport classic in France

at the rst attempt. The rst diesel race sports car o the

second generation made a successul premiere on March

21, 2009 in Florida. Audi won the Sebring 12 Hour race

rst time out with Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan

McNish and another R15 TDI also claimed the third step on

the podium.

Audi Sport Team Joest elds three o the powerul

600 hp plus sports cars in the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

Because there is no test day this year and the majority o

the track consists o public highways, which must be closed

o, the Audi R15 TDI will only make its rst exploratory laps

o the traditional 13.629 kilometer track during the weeko the event between June 8 and 14. Audi prepared itsel by

running diverse simulations and tests on the track in the

Sarthe region.

The driver line-up is very amiliar with the track, which

is a great bonus. Last years winners Dindo Capello/Tom

Kristensen/Allan McNish compete with start number 1.

Lucas Luhr/Mike Rockeneller/Marco Werner share the

number 2 Audi R15 TDI. Alexandre Prmat starts with twonewcomers in car number 3: His French countryman Romain

Dumas and the German Timo Bernhard were signed by Audi

in April or the 24 Hour race.

258,500 spectators visited the 24 Hours o Le Mans

last year and, in doing so, they set a new record or the

event existing since 1923. The ans can look orward to a

particularly erce battle this year: No less than 20 LMP1

prototypes, including nine diesel sports cars, are among the

Three race cars from Audi Sport

Approximately 200 employees in Ingolstadt and

Neckarsulm are primarily responsible or developing and

testing the race cars. Audi Sport is aliated with AUDI AGs

Technical Development (TE) and is thereore answerable to

Michael Dick, Board Member or Technical Development.

Head o Audi Sport since November 1993 is Austrian

Dr. Wolgang Ullrich. Audi Sport was restructured and

aligned or the uture in 2007. Towards the end o 2009

Audi Sport will complete the construction o the rst stageo a customer sport center in Ingolstadt or the new GT3

motorsport program.

New routes in customer sport

Audi has developed three race cars or the 2009 season:

The A4 DTM o the R14 plus model range as successor to the

R14 or the DTM, the R15 TDI as rst diesel race sports car

o the second generation and the R8 LMS or international

GT3 customer motorsport.

While Audi Sport in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm continue to

look ater the actory motorsport program, the organization

or GT3 customer racing was systematically expanded.

Absolute responsibility or development is in the hands oAudi Sport in Ingolstadt. At the same time two other sites

are integrated in this project: The engine or the race car

originates rom Gyr in Hungary. The bodyshell construction

and nishing o the Audi R8 LMS are carried out by the

quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm.

Second generation diesel racing sports car

AUDI AG is the worlds rst automobile manuacturer to

develop a second generation diesel racing sports car.

Audi aims to underline its supremacy and consolidate its

expertise in car technology once more at the legendary

24 Hours o Le Mans with the all-new Audi R15 TDI.

The 24 Hours o Le Mans is particularly suited or this:

Not only ast but also ecient and economical cars are

specically required or the French endurance classic.Lightweight construction, environmentally riendly drive

concepts and well-thought out aerodynamics are the

ocus o attention at Le Mans just as they are during the

development o production cars. For this purpose the

regulations intentionally give the engineers plenty o

reedom.

Audi Sport ully exploited this creative reedom and put

a new LMP1 race car on the track that diers signicantly

a sports prototype, says Head o Audi Motorsport Dr.

Wolgang Ullrich. To a certain extent we ollowed entirely

new routes.

The heart o the R15 TDI is a newly developed V10 TDI

engine producing more than 600 hp, with a maximumtorque output in excess o 1,050 Newton meters and which

refects the latest version o the TDI Technology invented

by Audi. The power unit is more compact and lighter than

the twelve-cylinder engine used in the preceding R10 TDI

model. The specic uel consumption and associated CO2

emissions could also be reduced. Innovations in the turbo-

charging and uel injection areas simultaneously ensure

improved engine response. The R15 TDI is also equipped

with a new generation o even lighter diesel particle ltersas part o a titanium exhaust system.

The new sports cars aerodynamics, which play a particularly

important role at Le Mans, are extremely rened. In similar

ashion to the victorious DTM 2008 Audi A4, the airfow

around and through the car was optimized with CFD

(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Included among the many

innovative detail solutions which can be spotted at rst

glance are a rear wing suspended rom the top and a high

nose.

The vehicle electrical system in the Le Mans sports car is

entirely new: A lithium-ion battery, as ound in some hybrid

vehicles, is used or the rst time. It is lighter than the

conventional battery and supplies a higher voltage.

Numerous innovative approaches are also hidden in the

chassis and suspension o the diesel sports car. Due to

the aerodynamic concept the ront and rear suspension

have been raised. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and theoptimized vehicle weight the R15 TDI is signicantly more

agile than its predecessor.

Included among the modications or Le Mans are the

modied gear ratios and aerodynamic conguration, which

optimizes the relationship between lit (downorce) and

drag or the high-speed track. Average lap speeds o

240 kph are achieved here. Audi prepared the R15 TDI

or the 24-hour race by completing thousands o test

kilometers. The eect o the weight increase by 30 to 930

kilograms initiated at short notice by the organizer was also

tested in this phase. Another regulation change, althougho less infuence, slows the reueling time through the

introduction o a reduced section hose.

Audi is the only automobile manuacturer to have won the

amous 24 Hours o Le Mans with a diesel car. With the

R15 TDI we have created the base to be in a position to win

also in 2009, says Head o Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang

Ullrich.

Winning team

Audi starts the 24 Hours o Le Mans 2009 with an

exceptionally successul, rejuvenated driver line-up. Since

the year 2000 at least one o the current Audi drivers has

always mounted the top step o the podium.

Eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen rom Denmark,

the two-time winner Allan McNish rom Scotland as well

as the Italian Dindo Capello, who has won the classic three

times up to now, share the cockpit o start number 1.

The German trio Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockeneller and Marco

Werner go to race with the start number 2. Werner won the

24-hour marathon at the Sarthe three times in succession

between 2005 and 2007, Luhr and Rockeneller have also

scored overall and class victories in other 24-hour races.

The Frenchmen Alexandre Prmat and Romain Dumas share

the Audi R15 TDI with start number 3 with the German Timo

Bernhard. While Prmat competes or Audi in the DTM and

sports car since 2007, Dumas and Bernhard make their Audi

debut in 2009. The two new signings are Porsche actory

drivers and have received special permission rom their

employer. A winning streak unites them: In 2007 and 2008

they won the American Le Mans Series LMP2 class, in 2008

the Sebring 12 Hour race and since 2007, the Nrburgring

24 Hour race as well.

when he stepped up to the DTM with

Unique track

The 24 Hours o Le Mans has been held since 1923. Till today

the track has retained its character o being a temporary

construction: The Circuit des 24 Heures uses a part o the

permanent Circuit Bugatti race track, however, by ar the

largest part consists o public highways, which are closed-of

especially or the race. Tricky bumps, tram-lines ormed by

heavy trucks and public highway asphalt conditions are only

three consequences o this compromise which challenge the

drivers.

A maximum speed o 405 kph was achieved on the

Hunaudires straight in 1988. Since 1990 two chicanes

articially slow this section o track. Nevertheless, the Audi

R15 TDI is still quicker than 300 kph in ve places: Beore

the two chicanes, approaching Mulsanne and heading down

towards the amous Indianapolis curve and beore the

Porsche Curves. The amount o ull-throttle per lap is over

75 per cent. At an assumed lap time o 3m 30s this would

mean that the drivers are at ull throttle or 2m 27s.

Audi Technology leading the way since 2000

No other manuacturer has managed to make a lasting

impression within such a short space o time in the Le Mans

24 Hour race as Audi. With eight wins rom ten starts the

brand with the our rings has demonstrated Vorsprung

durch Technik impressively in probably the worlds hardest

car race. I you include the victory in 2003 recorded by

the Bentley Speed 8, which was equipped by Audi Sport

developed TSFI engine, then Audi Technology is unbeaten at

Le Mans since 2000.

The Le Mans project began in 1997 when Audi searched or

a new motorsport discipline ater the superior quattro drive

was banned rom touring car racing. Audi claimed a podium

nish in 1999 when the rst Le Mans prototype made its

debut. At that time two open-topped Audi R8R elded

by Audi Sport Team Joest started the race. Two Audi R8C

Coups developed by Audi subsidiary RTN in Great Britain

and entered by Audi Sport UK also started but, however,ailed to make the nish.

Audi entered the history booksater the direct injection TFSI won in 2001

and the frst diesel win with TDI in 2006

Ten years ago during the 1999 season Audi started or

the rst time at Le Mans. Rarely beore was an automobile

manuacturer so successul in this race. Eight overall

victories in ten starts are more than an impressive record,
