Audi expands its customer racing program: While the

R8 LMS proved extremely eective during its frst two years

o competition and recorded 64 race victories and seven

championship titles in the hands o customer teams, the

quattro GmbH is busy testing the next customer racing car

around the Nrburgring: the TT RS. The compact Coup

rounds o the model range rom 2012 and will be developed

logically between now and then in order to be as successul

as the R8 LMS. In addition to our customers dedicated

programs with the R8 LMS, three actory supported events

orm the highlight: the endurance races at Bathurst (AUS),

around the Nrburgring (D) and at Spa (B). Contained in this

Audi opened a new chapter in its history with the R8 LMS

during the 2009 season: For the frst time it was possible

or enthusiastic motorsport customers to acquire a racing

car designed or customer racing events. In the frst two

years o competition the teams celebrated great successes

with the production based GT3 race car: seven championship

titles in Europe, 64 wins and a total o 163 podium fnishes

rom 197 races speak or themselves.

The concept will be extended again in the near uture: For

interested purchasers a modular customer racing program

rom 2012 opens up a model range consisting o new cars

and, in turn, signifcantly extends the feld o use or Audi

customer racing cars. The Audi TT RS, which made its debut

during 2010 in endurance racing on the Nordschleie o the

Nrburgring, marks a frst step in this direction. 2011 will

be used specifcally to develop the Audi TT RS to suit VLN

regulations. Customers will be able to compete a season

later. A modular design system allows Audi to develop

additional models rom the Audi TT RS or amateur sport.

Through economies o scale, versatile multi-application

parts and other synergies the many advantages also

rom the fnancial aspect are passed directly on to the

    customers.

Audi has also reorganized its customer racing activities.

For the 2011 season quattro GmbH took over the technical

development, sales and marketing and the technical

support o worldwide customer and importer teams. At the

beginning o February a urther improved version o the

Audi R8 LMS celebrated its premiere with a one-two fnish

at Bathurst. With the great European endurance classics

the Nrburgring 24 Hours (June) and the Spa 24 Hours in

Belgium (July) two actory events, supported by quattro

    GmbH, are in preparation.

During the 2011 season almost 120 races are scheduled by

customers in 17 race series worldwide and at amous single

events. So, the best possible base or the R8 LMS to write

yet another successul chapter this year in Audis young

An essential basis or motorsport at Audi is the beneft

or the end-user. Motorsport was and is a medium or

Audi to develop technologies with a promising uture,

stresses Head o Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich. In

this way rally and racing cars, which always also contained

technologies o direct beneft or the customer, have

been developed or more than 30 years in Ingolstadt andNeckarsulm.

Example 1: The our-wheel drive system quattro, which

was developed or competition in the World Rally

Championship, was introduced in 1982 into large-scale

production. To start the 1990s Audi also proved the

superiority o this powertrain system in the DTM. To this

day customers beneft rom the actual dynamic handling

advantages and not only on snow and ice.

Example 2: In material technology feld, motorsportenjoys the advantage o being able to test components

manuactured in low quantities rom exotic materials

without being subjected to the cost pressures ound in

large-scale production. Audi initially introduced aluminum

to engine and suspension design in rallying at the beginning

o the 1980s, beore the light metal ound avor in large-

scale production. Even carbon-fber three decades ago

still an exotic material in race cars like the Audi 200 quattro

Trans-Am and used in many places in the Audi A4 DTM

today is now produced or road cars within the concern.

    Close transer between sport and

    production line benefts the end-user

The sot top storage compartment and side panels o the

R8 Spyder or example are manuactured rom carbon-fber

    composite.

Example 3: Audi also now implements extensive technology

transer between the R8 LMS and R8 V10. During design o

the Audi Space Frame (ASF), Audi actually beneftted romthe development in motorsport where the lie cycle o a car

is simulated in quick tempo under the toughest conditions.

The injection system the FSI direct uel injection was

also adapted and contains the best rom road and racing.

Furthermore, Audi practices transer between the model

ranges: Many components rom the R8 LMS are used in the

new TT RS complying with SP4T regulations. Ultimately the

Audi R8 GT embodies pure motorsport technology through

its developments in saety and aerodynamics.

The numerous Audi motorsport customers enjoy improved

support to start the 2011 season. Ater the opening

o a dedicated customer racing center in Ingolstadt in

2010 additional structural and personnel steps were

implemented to ensure the best possible customer service.

To this end, quattro GmbH took over technical development

o both the Audi R8 LMS and TT RS, sales and marketingand the technical support o customers and importer teams

    around the world.

Personnel responsibilities have also been restructured.

Since January 1 our direct contacts are available in

the customer racing center or the teams. Wishes and

suggestions or improvements are orwarded directly to

the development department, solutions developed and

returned to the customers. In addition to the technical

customer racing supervisors, the areas marketing andsales have been also expanded. The two sub departments

customer management as well as distribution and parts

logistics ensure that car owners are supported even more

    exclusively and eciently.

The expansion o the parts distribution through the Audi

groups global logistics is, to a large extent, concluded

and now provides essential advantages in the areas o

warehouse capacity and procurement. Additionally two

service partnerships were established or the frst time in

    New ways or even better

    customer support

Development, marketing and distribution of the Audi R8 LMS is

From dream to reality: Audi riends wishing to drive a race

car have access to a unique worldwide oer since the 2010

season. The Audi driving experience expanded its portolio

o driving tuition by giving the possibility o driving the Audi

R8 LMS during high-quality driving events or directly in

    exclusive race events.

More ambitious sporting customers can enjoy the complete

ascination o both GT sports cars the production Audi

R8 V10 and the R8 LMS race version on the race track

in Gro Dlln north o Berlin. An even more challenging

oer is available to Audi drivers who have already collected

motorsport experience: Whoever has sucient experience

in motorsport and around the Nordschleie, and has

the necessary license, can compete in the Endurance

Championship Nrburgring or in the Nrburgring 24 Hours

    with the Audi R8 LMS.

A dedicated race team was established or these events,

which is led rom the sporting side by Manred Jantke. The

experienced motorsport manager and PR expert states:

Starting in the VLN Endurance Championship Nrburgring

generated a great deal o interest among our customers.

This is why we give Audi drivers with a racing background

the opportunity again this year to race on the worlds mostchallenging race track and in such a ascinating race car as

    the Audi R8 LMS.

Customers share the cockpit with at least one proessional

race driver, such as three-time Le Mans winner Marco

Werner, the established touring and sports car driver Frank

Schmickler or budding young talent Florian Gruber. The

customers are trained at Gro Dlln in preparation or the

races. Audi aims to expand its oer in the near uture to

    New responsibilities in customer racing

Since 1983 quattro GmbH embodies a completely unique

liestyle in the sign o the our rings by adding a special

touch o sporting dynamic, individuality and exclusivity

to the Audi philosophy Vorsprung durch Technik. Super

sporty and exclusive Audi vehicles, optional equipment

packages and accessories today still bear the exclusive

signature o quattro GmbH based in Neckarsulm.

quattro GmbH continues its successul businessdevelopment in 2010 in the sectors o high-perormance

models and vehicle personalization ater recording its

    highest turnover.

For the 2011 season the company was given an independent

unction in motorsport or the frst time. It took over

development o the Audi R8 LMS customer racing race

car and is also responsible in uture or the modular

customer racing program with the Audi TT RS. Motorsport

marketing and sales, development and technical support

or motorsport teams, customers and importers around

    Further improved regular winner

The Audi R8 LMS has become synonymous with winning

among its customers. For the 2011 season the mid-engine

sports car was improved in detail again under the auspices

    o quattro GmbH.

The GT3 sports car is equipped with a comprehensive array

o saety eatures with the ully unctioning production Audi

Space Frame (ASF) crash structures including side-impact

protection, a complex designed steel roll-cage and a splash-

    ree reueling system.

Dierent engine intake air-restrictors necessitate new

engine mapping or the 5.2 liter V10 power plant. They

are stipulated by the FIA, Fdration Internationale de

lAutomobile. A useul side eect: They also improve the

    drivability o the engine.

Subject to restrictor size the power ranges between 365 and

412 kW (496560 PS). The power unit originates rom

the production line and remains largely unchanged. Audi

achieves unrivalled running times as a result.

Ater the frst two years o the customer racing program

Audi uses an engine in a test car which has already

completed more than 25,000 kilometers. R8 LMS

customers are also delighted having made similarexperiences: Several teams have already spooled o more

than 20,000 kilometers with the frst power unit.

For the high and long-lasting loads encountered during 24-

hour races quattro GmbH has commissioned a special race

clutch. It is lighter than the standard module, thus reducing

the rotating masses which in turn relieve the gearbox.

The sequential six-speed gearbox continues to be operatedvia steering wheel mounted paddles.

The improved gearbox oil circulation helps durability.

The mounting and lubrication o the angle drive on the

dierential was optimized. At the frst event, the Bathurst

12 Hours in February 2011, the modifcations immediately

proved their value: These heavily loaded components

wore measurably less and thereore last longer. These

modifcations can now also ow into the customer cars

ater fnal approval by the FIA or respective championship

    organizers.

Modications were tested successfully on the R8 LMS at Bathurst

Certain areas o the Audi R8 LMS suspension have also been

modifed by quattro GmbH. The engineers developed a new

spring-damper set-up. Customers also beneft rom the

companys resources and the traditional knowledge transer

between production and sport long since established at

Audi: The modifed confgurations are tested and verifed

on a state-o-the-art seven post dynamic test rig in the

Technical Development (TE) o AUDI AG.

Tires rom development partner and supplier Michelin

guarantee perect contact with the track again this year.

Improved once again in many important areas, the Audi

R8 LMS competes in this confguration in customer racing

events worldwide and also the actory supported endurance

classics in Bathurst, at the Nrburgring and at Spa.

The Audi TT RS is the next step ater the Audi R8 LMS in the

expansion o Audis customer racing program. The attractive

coup rounds of the program starting at GT3 level and

gives Audi customers a cost-ecient entry level product or

    other motorsport categories.

The Audi TT RS is developed in accordance with the SPTregulations and as rst version o a pioneering uturistic

modular concept. These regulations are derived rom the

popular VLN Endurance Championship at the Nrburgring.

Using a production car as base, they allow comprehensive

modications which, however, retain the basic character o

    the original model.

For example, a thoroughbred racing engine can be

developed or the production power plant modied. Audiselected the production based unit or two reasons: The

costs associated with the development and running o

a new racing engine were too high or customer racing.

Furthermore, in the orm o the new 2.5 liter ve-cylinder

engine ound in the TT RS Audi has a state-o-the-art

unit also suited or motorsport use. The engine, in 2010

The Audi TT RS is tested around the

    Nrburgring Nordschleie

the class 2 to 2.5 liters, produces 250 kW (30 PS) in the

production car. Its power is increased by 29 kW to 279 kW

(380 PS) or motorsport use. Crankshat and valve train

are standard components as are the crankcase and cylinder

    heads.

The power increase compared to the production line unit

results primarily rom the ECU being reprogrammed and

also a racing exhaust system. A new cooling system isinstalled to cope with the high thermal demands. For

this purpose the motorsport project benets rom the

companys resources: Water and oil coolers originate

rom the Groups production component system, only the

    intercooler is a new development.

The Audi TT RS is equipped with permanent our-wheel

drive in standard orm. Since the majority o racing series

prohibit our-wheel drive, Audi decided to design and build

what is arguably the worlds most powerul ront wheel

    drive race car.

Perect technology transer is implemented in the

transmission system. The sequential six-speed gearboxs

pneumatic shit activation control is adapted rom the Audi

R8 LMS as is the pneumatic shit hardware itsel. While the

three-plate sinter metal clutch is a pure racing module, the

driveshats are assembled entirely rom production line

components. The outer joints originate rom the Q7 V12

TDI. A mechanical limited slip diferential distributes powerbetween the two wheels.

The suspension was completely redesigned. Steel sub

rames, wishbones and aluminum uprights were designed

as motorsport components while retaining the principle othe ront and rear suspension. There are perectly suited to

support the higher moments o ront wheel drive. The our

link rear suspension was also modied or racing. Race anti-

roll bars are used on both axles. The dynamic change o the

anti-roll bars properties in bump and rebound means that

the component has the efect o a third spring on each axle

and specically inuences the cars spring characteristics.

The TT RS braking system also benets rom big brother

R8 LMS: The complete brake system was adopted orthe ront axle, the rear brake discs originate rom the TT

production component system. The ront rims ound on the

GT3 sports car are used at the ront and rear on the TT RS.

The Audi TT RS body is equipped with a roll-cage which was

subject to a complete computerized FEA. It is welded to the

cars rear steel structure and bolted and bonded to the ront

aluminum sheets. The roo and side panels o the outer

body skin are, like the production line counterparts, metal. The completely enclosed underoor, the doors and ront

The Audi R8 LMS was already on the grid twice or the

Nrburgring 2 Hours. On its debut in 2009 the R9 LMS

won the GT3 class and nished an excellent second overall

in the hands o Team Abt Sportsline. In the 2010 season the

Phoenix team took class victory in the GT3 category. In 2011

Abt and Phoenix compete as actory teams in the Eiel.

Green hell as eternally youthul classic

The Nrburgrings Nordschleie commands unique status

worldwide. In the volcanic Eiel regions topography the

legendary track has the character o a gigantic roller coaster

R LMS continues Audis success story

Audi entered the World Rally Championship in 1981 with

the quattro. Since then, rally and race cars from Ingolstadt

and Neckarsulm have taken headlines worldwide after

scoring victory after victory. In the customer racing area

the tradition of winning races and championship titles

    continues since 2009.

    World Championship title in rallying

Two drivers and two manufacturers World Championship

titles between 1982 and 1984 were the excellent result

of Audis world championship program with the quattro.

Audi Sport concluded its rst motorsport decade brilliantly

with three wins in the Pikes Peak hillclimb with the Sport

quattro, the Trans Am series title with the 200 quattro and

individual IMSA GTO series race wins with the 90 quattro.

National and international touring car titles

The second decade also went gloriously: Winning the 1990and 1991 DTM titles with the V8 quattro proved that

four-wheel drive also rules the roost on European race

tracks. Numerous national and international titles in Super

Touring Car racing initially with the Audi 80 quattro, since

1995 with the A4 quattro conclude the quattro chapter.

Winning streak for Le Mans sports cars and in the DTM

Nine wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2000 as well as

numerous championship titles in the USA and Europe crown

the current score card of the Audis LMP sports car era. Four

titles in the DTM between 2004 and 2009 complete the

    current list of factory wins.

    Customer racing program since 2009

The Audi R8 LMS immediately continued the victorious

streak in the sign of the four rings: The Audi importer and

customer teams have claimed seven titles and 64 race

wins between 2009 and 2010. Thirty ve examples of

the production-based GT3 sports car have been deliveredworldwide.

The Audi R8 LMS has already won

    seven titles
