    With vigor in the new season: the 2012 customer racing

    motor sport season started in January. A season that will

    see the name Audi represented across a broader base and

    with even greater emphasis worldwide.

    With the Audi R8 LMS ultra and Audi R8 GRAND-AM two

    new developments join the grids. They should continue

    an emphatic success story: the Audi R8 LMS has racked up

    118 race wins and 13 championship titles around the world

    in just three years. Among the season highlights again this

    year are the 24-hour races at the Nrburgring and in Spa

    where Audi competes as titleholder.

    Initiated in 2009, the customer racing program has long

    since acquired a global dimension: as intended by Audi

    Sport customer racing rom the outset, importer and

    customer teams rom across the world now rely on the

    Audi R8 LMS and with great success. No less than six

    championship titles were collected during the 2011 season.

    Teams racing the Audi R8 LMS have already celebrated a

    total o 13 titles.

    More than 40 examples o the GT3 race car were delivered

    so ar. Throughout the 2012 season this number should

    increase to 70. quattro GmbH has developed two new

    models or the current year: the Audi R8 LMS ultra

    with improvements in many areas is a comprehensively

    developed successor to the R8 LMS. With the Audi R8

    GRAND-AM a version is available or the North American

    GRAND-AM championship or the rst time. Furthermore,

    in China a unique one-make Cup is held or the Audi R8 LMS.

    As many as 16 cars are expected to join the grid.

    The rapid development o customer racing activities shows

    that we chose the right approach at the right time, stresses

    Werner Frowein, Managing Director o quattro GmbH. To

    keep our nger on the pulse the two new models were

    developed specically or customer wishes and according to

    market demands. They lead the way into an exciting uture.

    support personnel advise teams on location, Audi Sport

    customer racing service vehicles are present and a dedicated

    team attends to customer issues and concerns. The

    brands clients contested no less than 179 individual races

    worldwide last season. For the rst time in 2012 the WRT

    team even ghts or World Championship honors in GT

    racing with the Audi R8 LMS ultra.

    While customers are the ocus o attention, Audi also uses

    the R8 LMS or two great endurance races the 24-hour

    races at the Nrburgring and Spa. Last year Audi celebrated

    overall victory in Belgium and a GT3 one-two-three class

    nish in the Eiel. The Audi R8 LMS ultra should also be at

    the sharp end o the eld again this year.

    Audi will be permanently represented in motor sport in

    China in the uture

    In the uture Audi will also be permanently represented

    in motor sport in the largest product market: rom 2012

    onwards the Audi R8 LMS Cup, as exclusive brand race

    series, will underline the companys leading role in the

    premium segment. As a result, Audi sets a milestone in

    Chinas embryonic motorsport tradition: it is the rst one-

    make cup worldwide or the Audi R8 LMS.

    Starting in the second quarter o 2012, the powerul

    419 kW (570 hp) R8 LMS GT3 race car will compete at

    ve race events, which visit the internationally renowned

    Shanghai and Zhuhai circuits. The plan is to eld 16

    examples o Audis customer racing model in the one-make

    cup. They comply with the GT3 version and are equipped

    with the new Audi PS1 saety seat as standard. The AudiR8 LMS Cup establishes our motor sport activities in China

    on a permanent basis, explains Rene Koneberg, Head o

    Audi Sport customer racing China. Audi was a pioneer

    in the premium car market in China. Now we aim to give

    motor sport in this country a similar impulse.

    Audi Sport customer racing China will organize the one-

    make cup. This new structure enjoyed an impressive

    premiere: at the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC)

    in motorsport the opportunity to compete in races at

    a proessional level. The complete packages available

    or gentlemen drivers include everything a racer needs;rom license training to ready-to-go race cars and the

    organizational structure.

    China has become a sort o second home or Audi,

    explains Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter, Managing Director o

    Audi China. By entering motor sport we also aim to prove

    Vorsprung durch Technik on the race tracks in this dynamic

    country.

    Motor sport has immense importance or Audi and this or

    30 years. Motor sport is always undertaken with regard to

    the end user the Audi customer. Technologies with a direct

    relevance to production have the greatest chance o being

    implemented.

    Example 1: ultra lightweight technology. Ultra lightweightdesign and production helps to reduce uel consumption.

    Aluminum suspension components were tested by Audi

    in rallying in the 1980s, today they are mass produced.

    The Audi Space Frame (ASF) sets standards in automobile

    manuacture or almost 20 years. The production line Audi

    R8 also has such an aluminum chassis. The basic structure

    o the Audi R8 LMS race version originates rom the same

    production cycle and is to 90 per cent identical with the

    production model. This is why motor sport supplies valuable

    ndings. The same can be said or new materials.

    Motor sport is dominated today by carbon ber reinorced

    plastics (CFRP) or carbon ber or short. It is rapidly nding

    its way into mass production. The Audi R8 Spyders sot top

    box and side panels are made rom this material. The ront

    enders on the Audi RS3 Sportback are manuactured rom

    CFRP.

    Example 2: Light technology. It is an important actor in

    active saety. The Audi A8 was the worlds rst car to roll

    o the production line with LED daytime driving lights. An

    increasing number o Audi models are tted with ull LED

    equipment as an option, as does the new A6. Audi also

    pushes the new LED headlight technology in motor sport.

    In 2006 the Audi R10 TDI was the rst race car with LED

    daytime driving lights. The Audi R15 TDI rom 2010 was

    equipped with a combination o Xenon headlights and LEDs.

    LED headlights. Combined with sophisticated refector-lens

    modules, eight high-power light emitting diodes per side

    provide unique illumination.

    Example 3: Drivetrain technology. Downsizing is the order

    o the day or ever more ecient engines. What establishes

    itsel in mass production is also used successully in motor

    sport. To this end, the Audi R18 TDI won the 24 Hours o

    Le Mans in 2011 with a displacement o 3.7 liters, while its

    predecessor had a displacement o 5.5 liters. The exhaust

    The Audi customer racing race cars are built in Heilbronn-Biberach

    Dierent customer teams swapped to Audi rom rival

    manuacturers, explains Werner Frowein proudly. Many

    car owners signaled to us that the Audi support sets new

    benchmarks. In order to address the growing demands and

    keep pace with the ever increasing number o race cars in

    competition in the uture, we are even more committed

    than ever in 2012.

    Ater more than 40 examples o the Audi R8 LMS were

    handed over to customers around the world by the end o

    2011, urther key markets are added this year: with the Audi

    R8 GRAND-AM a customer racing car is available or the

    North American market or the rst time.

    The goal in the USA is or customer teams to eld our cars

    permanently during the rst year. In China a dedicated one-

    make cup is held or the Audi R8 LMS or the rst time ever.

    As many as 16 cars compete against one another here. The

    newly developed Audi R8 LMS ultra competes as successor

    to the R8 LMS in the GT3 championships worldwide.

    Four bases on three continents boost AudiSport customer racings presence

    Audi boosts its permanent presence globally in the ater

    sales eld with our bases on three continents. As last year,

    Nova Engineering undertakes maintenance and service work

    on the customer racing race cars in Japan. This unction is

    assumed by the Melbourne Perormance Center in Australia.Audi Sport customer racing China is responsible or the

    Chinese market. Audi Sport customer racing North America

    is assigned the role as service partner in the USA.

    While parts supply or these oversea markets benet to a

    great extent rom the Audi groups global logistics, quattro

    GmbH is also present in the paddock at selected race

    tracks in Europe. A new, dedicated service trailer made its

    premiere in 2011. It is equipped with every modern acility

    or technology, parts supply and communication with the

    customers. In the prvious season Audi Sport customer

    racing service trucks made more than 30 appearances at

    race events in Great Britain, France and Germany and in the

    FIA European Championship.

    quattro GmbH has also urther reinorced its personnel

    levels. While the Sales and Marketing department was

    established in 2011, a greater number o customer racing

    support personnel are available or inquiries in 2012. In

    the meantime, on race weekends, the contacts in Germany

    support events in Australia, China, Japan and Malaysia and

    also various European championships.

    markets there is a healthy demand or the new Audi R8

    In addition to the personnel increase a structural innovation

    takes into account the fourishing motorsport activities.

    To this end, a position as Head o Customer Management

    is established or the rst time in 2012. As a consequence

    we have created the oundations to establish ourselves in

    a leading position as attractive supplier in worldwide GT3

    racing, emphasizes Werner Frowein.

    From 2012 onwards the Audi race experience arouses even

    greater enthusiasm: customers race with the brand new

    Audi R8 LMS ultra in the new season.

    The Audi race experience has raised eyebrows or two years

    now. From initial license training and incentive events it

    has developed a systematic program or the brands moreambitious motor sport enthusiasts. As pioneer, Audi has

    developed a racing program or sel-exploration: customers

    can participate in motor sport competitions personally with

    Audi.

    The entire package was accepted so well that the Audi

    race experience is now ocused on two dierent areas

    incentives and customer motorsport. The incentives allow

    customers to amiliarize themselves with both the Audi

    R8 LMS and Audi R8 V10 in dierent programs. The license

    trainings or instance allow participants to gain their racing

    license. The experience Audi R8 LMS allows between30 and 60 minutes o driving time in the GT3 race car

    during predetermined appointments at the Gro Dlln or

    Lausitzring circuits. Subsequent individual training sessions

    enable customers to dene an exclusive, bespoke program

    with the Audi R8 LMS.

    The customer motor sport sector crowns the program:

    customers are honed at Gro Dlln or their orthcoming

    races. Things then move up a gear on the worlds most

    Nordschleie at several VLN endurance races or during the

    24 hours Nrburgring (1920 May 2012).

    In 2011 all the seats or the 24-hour race were sold out

    very early. The VLN races also enjoyed great demand, says

    Jose Sepp Haider happily. The ormer rally driver takes the

    position o race team Sporting Director in 2012. As long-standing Audi driving experience instructor and having been

    involved with the Audi race experience orm the word go the

    Austrian combines two special skills: he knows the Audi R8

    LMS rom his own experience and can assess clients wishes

    the best. From the very beginning he has worked as trainer

    to prepare customers or the races.

    The 58-year old proessional still proves his great ability

    today while posting ast lap times with ease duringoccasional races in the R8 LMS.

    ormer DTM driver Frank Schmickler and three-time Le

    Mans winner Marco Werner will once again pass on their

    was developed specically or the North American market.

    In China the proven 2011 version o the GT3 race car will

    New benchmark or success

    In 2012, the Audi R8 LMS ultra competes as successor to

    the successul R8 LMS GT3 sportscar. The quattro GmbH

    engineers were aced with the challenging task o urther

    improving a proven winner.

    The teams gave us valuable input, says Werner Frowein.

    We eel very close to our customers and analyzed the

    wishes which in turn helped the development o many

    details on the R8 LMS. On the new R8 LMS ultra all

    perormance related measures are logically implemented

    to ensure that we can oer a globally competitive and

    attractive race car.

    Romolo Liebchen set several key priorities together with his

    development team. New doors manuactured rom carbon

    ber reinorced plastic help, together with high-energy

    absorbing crash oam, not only to reduce weight, but also

    to increase passive saety. The newly developed PS1 saetyseat rom Audi also contributes to this and is now also

    included as standard equipment, which easily exceeds the

    saety requirements stipulated by the regulations.

    A reworked gearbox urther increases reserves over long

    distances. A new exhaust system with race catalytic

    converters improves the engine characteristics. The mid

    mounted V10 engine now has even more torque available

    at lower revs. Subject to the regulations the 5.2 literpower plant produces up to 419 kW (570 hp). Based on its

    The new Audi R8 LMS ultra is available rom March 2012

    standard production counterpart the engine covers 20,000

    kilometers beore the rst rebuild.

    The race cars optimized cooling successully combines

    several targets with one another. In addition to a larger

    engine oil cooler and gearbox oil cooler, there is also a

    hydraulic steering fuid cooler, which was previously located

    in the nose, now mounted in the center o the car. Thesideblades, such a distinctive Audi R8 eature, allow larger

    air ducts or the cooling system and improve the thermal

    characteristics o the new R8 LMS ultra. At the same time

    the air fow to the water cooler at the ront o the car

    was improved. The cockpit ventilation was also urther

    optimized.

    On the suspension side the Audi R8 LMS ultra was

    developed in several areas. On the ront axle twelve inchwheels are now used instead o eleven. Development

    partner Michelin supplies wider ront tires in 30-65/18

    ormat rom 2012. Optimized brake cooling on the

    ront axle improves durability o the brake system. As

    replacement or the anti-vibration rubber mounts used upto now, the wishbones are now mounted on the chassis

    with spherical bearings. Lighter, bump and rebound

    adjustable gas pressure dampers with optimized damping

    characteristics rom Bilstein conclude the suspension

    package.

    Aerodynamic improvements round o the innovations

    or 2012. The wider ront hood is available, insoar as the

    homologation rules allow this in the respective race series,with optional air outlets (louvers) over the ront wheels.

    The new rear wing is wider and is tted with larger end

    plates. Work in the Audi wind tunnel enabled the wing to be

    mounted in an even more ecient position this generating

    maximum downorce while maintaining minimum drag.The improved air fow and increased contact surace area

    increase the downorce on the rear axle. A new ront splitter

    with optimized diusion guarantees a perect aerodynamic

    balance.

    From 2012 all new cars are equipped with above mentioned

    evolution kit. For existing cars, quattro GmbH oers a

    conversion to the 2012 evolution version. The Audi R8 LMS

    ultra costs 329,000 Euro net.

    new Audi R8 GRAND-AM is the successul Audi R8 LMS with

    118 wins and 13 championship titles to its name. Using this

    GT3 race car as base quattro GmbH developed a car or the

    Grand Touring class in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car

    Series in the USA.

    The Audi R8 GRAND-AM diers signicantly to its GT3 sister

    model and has a completely new basic set-up. For example

    the downorce is reduced drastically. Approximately 70 to

    80 per cent o the grip generated by the aerodynamics is

    lost because the GRAND-AM regulations stipulate dierent

    bodywork components. As a result, the new ront splitter

    can only extend 38 millimeters beyond the nose contour.

    The ront underfoor must be fat. The standard rear wing is

    only 152 centimeters wide and, as a result, 260 millimeters

    narrower than that o the R8 LMS.

    Because the aerodynamic loads are less, dierent dampercharacteristics and soter ront springs are required,

    The optimized Audi R8 LMS ultra cooling package is also

    used in the Audi R GRAND-AM

    The GRAND-AM series

    poses new technical

    conditions. The

    Continental tires are

    designed specifcally

    or the US race tracks

    speciy a static ride height o 65 millimeters this is about

    ten millimeters more than the minimum in the FIA series.

    At the same time, the tires rom standard supplier

    Continental play an important role. The GTR (or closed

    circuits) and GTO (or oval tracks) tire models signicantly

    infuence the suspension set-up. ABS and traction control,

    which are tted as standard equipment in the Audi R8

    LMS, had to be immobilized or the R8 GRAND-AM. Theoptimized cooling package that Audi had developed or the

    R8 LMS is also used in the R8 GRAND-AM.

    We have successully tested every modication, sums up

    Romolo Liebchen. We developed a good and solid set-up

    or our customers with Frank Stippler in December 2011

    and also gained valuable inormation during the endurance

    tests. The durability o consumable parts and their use in

    high ambient temperatures ulll all requirements.

    perormance parity between the dierent cars in the GT

    class. Audi provided technicians representing the race series

    rom this initial classication.

    Although the chapter customer racing at Audi only startedin 2009, the record o success is already impressive. The

    Audi R8 LMS established itsel as a genuine winner around

    the world. At the end o 2011 the individual cars had

    racked up a total o 986 races between them. They were

    distributed over 377 races in which the GT3 sports car took

    no less that 118 wins and a total o 312 podium nishes in

    its class. The GT sportscar is credited with 13 championship

    Dawning o a new era or the Audi actory motor sport

    program: a new age starts in 2012 in the DTM, while or

    LMP sportscars the FIA World Endurance Championship

    (WEC) is staged or the rst time. As result, Audi tackles

    two particularly ambitious programs.

    Ater twelve years the DTM changes its look completely: the

    previous models make way or a new, ar more economical

    vehicle concept. The spectacular appearance o the racing

    cars is maintained. However, the signicantly higher

    number o standard parts or every manuacturer in the

    DTM helps to reduce costs by up to 40 per cent. The central

    component is an innovative carbon ber monocoque with a

    steel cage. The design sets new benchmarks in the saety o

    racing touring cars.

    Audi started to develop the new A5 DTM or the 2012

    season in May 2010. The Coup made its maiden outing in

    July 2011. The sporting goals in the new year remain the

    same: ater ve championship titles with the Audi A4 DTM

    (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011) the A5 DTM should

    continue this winning momentum.

    For the rst time or many years a world championship is

    staged once again or sports cars: the 2012 WEC calendar

    consists o eight races and by including North and South

    America, Europe, the Middle East and Eastern Asia covers

    The 24 Hours o Le Mans is the crown jewel in the calendar.

    Ater Audi won this endurance classic again or the tenth

    time last season, the ocus o attention this year is once

    again victory in the worlds most important endurance

    race. Marcel Fssler/Andr Lotterer/Benot Trluyer took

    overall victory in 2011 with an Audi R18 TDI tted with

    many pioneering developments. In addition to the ultra

    A World EnduranceChampionship is

    relations. The majority o GT3 teams ofer a dedicated press

    service.

    and also the most important inormation covering the

    customer teams racing activities during the season.

    Possible actory backed events with customer racing race

    cars are an exception: They are accompanied by the Audi
