    The DTM takes o in the 2012 season: with new technical

    regulations that are pioneering in the elds o saety, cost-

    eciency and desirability o the race cars, with exciting

    Coups rom Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz and with the

    premiere season o the new Audi A5 DTM. And with a highly

    motivated Audi squad that will leave no stone unturned in

    its quest to bring another DTM title back to Ingolstadt and

    Neckarsulm.

    V8, TT, and A4 each o the three models with which

    Audi joined the DTM grid previously won at least one

    championship title in its lietime. Following eight successul

    years with the A4 the brand with the our rings elds a

    actory backed two-door Coup the A5 or the rst time

    in the most popular international touring car race series.

    The three veteran Audi Sport Teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix

    and Rosberg compete with a total o eight new Audi A5 DTM

    cars whereby Audi Sport has already achieved a new

    in-house record beore the rst race: never beore have so

    many new cars been built or a DTM season. In 2004 when

    the Audi actory returned to the DTM it was six cars. Since

    then a maximum o our new race cars have been built per

    year.

    In 2012 there are only new cars on the grid or the rst

    time ever since the DTM was re-launched in the year 2000.

    To develop a completely new race car or new technicalregulations and to produce eight identical replicas as

    well as guaranteeing the spare parts supply is logistically

    very dicult and was only possible through the absolute

    commitment o the entire Audi squad and our teams,

    explains Head o Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich.

    I am, however, convinced that it will pay o since we have

    the opportunity to make the worlds best touring car series

    out o the DTM this year.

    All three actory teams were integrated in the development

    and testing program o the new Audi A5 DTM rom the

    very beginning and thereore start the new DTM era with

    equal chances. The same applies to the driver squad which

    remains almost unchanged compared to the 2011 season.

    The sole newcomer is the youthul 21-year old Frenchman

    Adrien Tambay, who ought his way through a multi-stage

    young driver assessment test, and is team mate to the

    young Swiss Rahel Frey at Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.

    The pair o two-time DTM Champions Mattias Ekstrm

    (Sweden) and Timo Scheider (Germany), who also start

    or Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, spearhead the Audi

    driver squad. Miguel Molina (Spain) and Mike Rockeneller

    (Germany) drive or Audi Sport Team Phoenix which

    produced last years Champion. With Filipe Albuquerque

    (Portugal) and Edoardo Mortara (Italy/France) Audi SportTeam Rosberg compete with the same drivers as last year.

    Points are awarded at a total o ten DTM events in 2012. On

    top o this comes a show event staged once again in Munich

    Olympic Stadium. Audis target or the season is the same

    as every year: We aim to be battling or wins and to bring

    ourselves into a position rom which we can also ght or

    the title in the end, says Dr. Ullrich. Its clear that this year

    that could well be a little more dicult than in the yearsbeore.

    The engine range extends rom the

    economical 2.0 TDI to the high-

    perormance V8 producing 4 hp

    The new Audi A5 DTM orms the spearhead o the sporting

    A5 amily even though it is currently exclusively reserved

    or the companys race drivers. However, the production

    models also ulll almost every wish: be it A5, S5 or RS 5

    Coup, Sportback or Cabriolet a total o seven models

    are available. The state-o-the-art engine range extends

    rom a particularly economical 2.0 TDI producing 105 kW(143 hp) to a high-perormance V8 pushing out 331 kW

    (450 hp) in the exceptional RS 5 Coup.

    With its captivating lines the Audi A5 Coup is today,

    only ve years ater its market launch in 2007, a modern

    classic. Audi received the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik

    Deutschland or it in 2010. With its elegant looks and

    unique eeling o space the A5 Coup has taken the hearts

    o Audi customers by storm. The A5 DTM is based on the

    latest version which is recognized, since the latest product

    acelit in summer 2011, by its striking, wedge-shaped

    headlights.

    TFSI technology rom motorsportThe two-door Coup also brings along excellent eatures

    or everyday lie. Its luggage compartment lid opens

    automatically, the rear seatbacks can be olded down

    separately. Thanks to the lightweight steel body with

    aluminum ront enders the basis versions unladen weight

    is restricted to a mere 1,425 kilograms. One o the most

    interesting engines is the compact high-tech 1.8 TFSI

    gasoline engine with an average uel consumption o a mere

    5.7 liters per 100 km. The combination o turbocharging

    and direct injection TFSI or short originates, like so

    many other technologies at Audi, rom motorsport: it madea triumphant debut in Le Mans in 2001.

    The Audi A5 Cabriolet, equipped with a classic abric hood

    like every other open topped Audi, is available since 2009.

    It opens and closes in good 15 seconds thanks to its ully

    automatic operation. The A5 amily is completed since

    September 2009 by the A5 Sportback a particularly elegant

    ve-door vehicle with a luggage compartment capacity o up

    to 1,283 liters.

    All three A5 body styles Coup, Cabriolet and Sportback are

    also available as unique sporting S models that excel through

    strong perormance, subtle understatement, a wealth o

    standard and optional equipment and versatile everyday

    practicality and which transmit their power to the road via

    the permanent our-wheel drive quattro. In the S5 range the S5 Sportback, S5 Coup and S5 Cabriolet the 3.0 TFSI

    with 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm torque is used. The V6

    compressor consumes an average o only 8.1 liters per 100 km.

    The dynamic perormance gures are impressive: the S5 Coup

    sprints rom standstill to highway pace in 4.9 seconds.

    Audi RS 5: the darling o many Audi actory drivers

    The highlight and darling o many Audi actory drivers like

    Timo Scheider or Adrien Tambay is the Audi RS 5 Coup.Its 4.2 FSI, a high-revving normally aspirated V8, produces

    331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm, its 430 Nm torque are on tap

    between 4,000 and 6,000 revs. The high-perormance Coup

    sprints rom zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, i desired Audi

    limits the maximum speed rst at 280 km/h.

    Intense season o big challenges

    Audi Sport has been, as part o Technical Development

    (TE) o AUDI AG, a guarantee or success in motorsport

    or more than three decades. Be it rallying, touring cars

    or sport prototypes: in every discipline in which Audi has

    competed as actory to date, the brand with the our rings

    has celebrated important victories and won numerous

    championship titles worldwide oten in connection with

    new technologies like quattro drive, TFSI, TDI or ultra

    lightweight design and construction.

    Audi Sport has realized 18 dierent racing projects to date

    rom the legendary original quattro (R1) to the latest LMP1

    sportscar R18. The Audi A5 DTM was developed to a ready to

    race state under the project name R17.

    Currently around 200 employees at the Ingolstadt and

    Neckarsulm sites are responsible or the development and

    testing o the race cars. Doctorate o Mechanical Engineering

    Dr. Wolgang Ullrich has been Head o Audi Sport since 1993.

    The challenges Audi Sport aces this year are particularly

    big: with the A5 DTM and R18 e-tron quattro with hybrid

    drive two completely new race cars were developed in

    parallel or the two most important elds o activity DTM

    and sport prototypes. Furthermore, several races in the

    DTM and new FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)

    2012 are held on the same weekends. Audi Sports busy

    race season is completed by actory backed events with the

    GT3 sportscar R8 LMS ultra in the two 24-hour race at theNrburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

    Greater saety, reduced costs, spectacular

    look: the new Audi A5 DTM

    The Audi A5 DTM, which was developed under the project

    name R17 internally at Audi Sport, complies with the new

    technical regulations that come into orce or the 2012

    season. At the same time the responsible parties also

    targeted three premises: car saety, a cost reduction o up

    to 40 per cent and a spectacular appearance.

    The nal aspect is visible at rst glance. The Audi A5 DTM

    appears lower and squatter than its predecessor the A4 DTM

    with which Audi won ve o the last eight DTM titles. A new

    and innovative chassis in hybrid design hides under the

    bodywork manuactured entirely rom carbon. With its ront,

    rear and lateral crash elements the combination o carbon-

    ber monocoque and steel roll-cage sets new standards with

    regard to saety or a racing touring car. Furthermore, the

    chassis, which weighs just 160 kilograms, is one o about

    50 identical components shared by all DTM cars.

    Thanks to these standard parts it was possible to achieve

    the targeted cost reduction o up to 40 per cent while still

    improving the saety and appeal o DTM cars, says Head

    o Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich under whose

    supervision the new Audi A5 DTM was developed.

    The Audi A5 DTM is comprised o about

    4, individual parts about 50o them are identical in every DTM car

    The A5 DTM is 5.01 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and

    only 1.15 meters high. The wheelbase o every DTM car

    is a uniorm 2.750 millimeters. Like its predecessor, the

    A5 DTM is powered by a near 340 kW (460 hp) Audi Sport

    V8 engine. A new development with partner Hewland is

    the six-speed gearbox now activated pneumatically via shit

    paddles mounted on the steering wheel. When compared toa classic manual shit, the more precise gear shit procedure

    acilitates a signicant increase in gearbox service lie o up

    to 24,000 kilometers.

    The Bosch MS 5.1 engine electronics, which unction without

    uses, and the central display already used in the Audi

    R8 LMS are also state-o-the-art. The exclusive tire partner

    Hankook supplies larger and wider tires the dimension o

    which resemble those used on LMP2 sportscars. Integrated

    uel tank with which the current DTM race distance can be

    completed making a stop or uel since reueling during a

    DTM race is no longer permitted or saety reasons.

    In general new standards are set with the cell, explains

    Stean Aicher, Head o Vehicle Design at Audi Sport. The

    monocoque weighs only 126 kilograms, the roll-cage 32.5

    kilos. At the same time the saety standards have increased

    dramatically. The design is extremely stable when subject to

    not just rontal, longitudinal crashes but also side impacts.

    The entire sidewall must withstand a orce o 360 kN during

    the side impact test, this equates to around 36 tones. Byway o comparison, this value was 80 kN or the A4 DTM,

    which demonstrated its high saety standards in several

    spectacular accidents.

    Only the engine subrame at the ront and gearbox at the

    rear restrict the engineers reedom as ar as the suspension

    geometry is concerned. The suspension pick-up points

    must be mounted to these standard elements. In addition,

    the material, steel, and tube dimensions are xed andnumerous dimensions dened by the regulations the

    wheels or example.

    Aerodynamic possibilities were also restricted. Air fow

    through the bodywork as seen on the A4 DTM and complex

    additional winglets at the rear are now prohibited. Visual

    similarity to the production line model is signicantly

    greater as a result and, at the same time, the new DTM cars

    should react less sensitively to contact and create a better

    slipstream also thanks to the larger rear wing.

    Audi had very innovative solutions in the past in the DTM

    and especially or the aerodynamics, says Dr. Martin

    Mhlmeier, Head o Technology at Audi Sport. Since these

    areas were strongly restricted it is now more about detail

    solutions to acquire an advantage over the competition.

    Audi was also always a trendsetter in these areas over theyears. I think that weve ound interesting and innovative

    details solutions once again.

    Project R17 began in May 2010, a month later the green

    light was given to use the A5 as base model. Tests in the

    model wind tunnel have been running since February 2011.

    The roll-out was completed on 29 July 2011. Aterwards,

    the intensive test program started at various European race

    tracks and continued to the Deutscher Motor Sport Bund(DMSB) homologation date on March 1, 2012. Since then,

    the most important technical aspects on the new DTM cars

    were rozen or the rest o the season including the still all

    important aerodynamic conguration.

    As usual, or this reason, all three manuacturers kept their

    nal aero conguration as secret as possible to the last

    moment. In the DTM this year even more value is attached

    to every tiny detail than ever beore, knows Dr. Wolgang

    Ullrich. And, it goes without saying that we have developed

    or as long as possible.

    For the Head o Audi Motorsport the A5 DTM is the most

    elegant o the new DTM cars. Furthermore, the A5 is rom

    its base a car that ts antastically well to the DTM.

    Audi with the youngest driver line-up

    Head o Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich began

    rejuvenating his driver squad several years ago with

    success: For the 2011 DTM season we had the strongest

    driver squad ever, says the Head o Audi Sport knowingly.

    Eight o the nine drivers mounted the podium at least once.

    In addition, they won seven o the ten races or Audi and

    clinched the championship title.

    Audi has rejuvenated its driver squad once again or the

    2012 season. New to the team is the youthul 21-year old

    Frenchman Adrien Tambay, who impressed at a young driver

    assessment test and now tackles his rst DTM season. As

    a result, Audi remains true to its philosophy o supporting

    budding young talent. You will not nd any ormer

    Formula 1 stars at the brand with the our rings. We want

    drivers who make a name or themselves at Audi and whoare closely associated with the brand. Mattias Ekstrm,

    Timo Scheider, Mike Rockeneller and Edoardo Mortara are

    excellent examples o this.

    At an average age o almost 27, Audi contests the DTM

    2012 with the youngest driver squad among the three

    manuacturers. The pair o two-time DTM Champions

    Mattias Ekstrm and Timo Scheider, who have scoredall their 23 DTM race wins and titles with Audi, orm the

    spearhead. Mike Rockenellers name can also already

    be ound in the list o winners o the most popular

    international touring car series. Filipe Albuquerque, Miguel

    Molina and Edoardo Mortara were the most successul

    newcomers in the DTM in the last two years and the three

    o them have also mounted the podium. The Audi squad is

    completed by Rahel Frey who Dr. Wolgang Ullrich thinks

    will spring a surprise or two during the 2012 season.

    Audi Sport Team Phoenix

    Audi Sport Team Phoenix achieved a

    spectacular coup in the DTM in 2011:

    or the rst time ever a team proved

    triumphant in the DTM with a year-

    old car. Phoenix Racing was ounded

    in 1999 and has contested the series

    without interruption since the DTM

    comeback in the year 2000 and

    as Audi actory team since 2006.

    Winning the DTM title is the greatest

    victory to date in the history o

    the young Eiel based team, which

    celebrated its tenth anniversary in

    2009 and wrote the rst chapters

    o its success story in 1999 with the

    Audi A4 quattro in Super Touring

    The ans can orm a picture or themselves at eleven events

    staged during the 2012 season. Ten races are held and on

    top o these, like last year, a show event is staged in the

    Munich Olympic stadium, which attracted over 54,000

    spectators on its premiere.

    The strong oundation or the three competing automobile

    manuacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz is the

    important domestic German market which boasts a total

    Austria, the Netherlands and Spain.

    DTM relies on continuity this year:

    all eleven DTM events were on the

    on TV in almost every one o the 194

    countries worldwide. Races in Asia

    are currently in discussion. The DTM

    aims to establish itsel together with

    the GRAND AM organization in the

    USA, discussions regarding a possible

    The season opener at Hockenheim is always something

    very special or us drivers, since its all completely new;

    rom the hospitality to the team clothing. The rst race

    gives an idea o balance o perormance in the new season.

    Itll be particularly exciting this year due to the new cars

    and the third manuacturer. The atmosphere at Hockenheim

    is always amazing the ans are really eager to see all the

    cars in action. The season opener is normally blessed by

    wonderul spring weather. Hockenheim is also a antastic

    circuit or the rst race: it allows you to get into a good

    rhythm and has a good variety o corners. However, there is

    only one good place to overtake which is beore the hairpin,

    unless a competitor makes a mistake.

    Timo Scheider:

    On this track you need a car that unctions well both

    mechanically and aerodynamically since the Lausitzring

    has a mixture o both ast and slow corners. Entering

    turn 1 is a particularly good place to overtake; you have

    to use the tow down the long straight. Going into turn 5

    which takes you onto the short circuit is another good

    opportunity the circuit is wide here and there is plenty

    o space. The smooth tarmac which doesnt have much

    grip is typical or the Lausitzring. I like this modern

    acility. The background with its towering grandstands

    is very imposing especially when you drive out o the

    pits or the rst time. By the way, the grandstands are

    perect or the ans because the spectators can see

    almost the entire track rom them.

    Mattias Ekstrm:

    A typical English race track. It is small and bumpy in

    places. You cant aord to make a mistake because there

    are virtually no run-o areas. Ive had a mixture o good and

    bad experiences here. Like the Norisring, Brands Hatch has

    very ew corners. However, they are very special, especially

    the rst corner. The circuit which is also the shortest on

    the DTM calendar has very ew places to overtake. A lot is

    said about the typical English weather, but weve only ever

    had rain here once when the DTM has visited. The Brands

    Hatch track normally has good grip, but the organizers have

    made some modications over the years so that weve oten

    had a ew small surprises in rst practice.

    Rahel Frey:

    The race track in Spielberg is my avorite in the DTM

    calendar. I elt immediately at home here in 2011. The

    atmosphere was amazing; you really sensed how the

    ans celebrated. Spielberg is also a track with great

    motorsport history, which obviously blends perectly

    into its natural surroundings. The brakes are heavily

    stressed due to the many uphill and downhill sections.

    I you make a mistake it has a great aect since you lose

    time on the next uphill section. There are several good

    overtaking places. You can ollow the rhythm o the

    track very easily; Spielberg certainly suits drivers with a

    gentle driving style.

    The only street circuit on the DTM calendar is something

    quite special. The atmosphere is unique. The grandstands

    are always sold-out and the paddock is absolutely crowded.

    The Norisring is, however, much harder or us drivers than it

    actually appears. As outsider you think: just three corners

    that cant be so dicult. Because the circuit is very bumpy

    you have to hit the braking point exactly every lap. The track

    surace is special; there are several sections with a kind o

    concrete surace, which is very slippery in the rain. In turns

    2 and 3 you have to drive very close, so close in act that the

    mirrors are oten damaged. Ater all you have to use every

    millimeter o the track. Overtaking is very dicult, the best

    chance is under braking or turn 1 and into the nal corner.

    Edoardo Mortara:

    Munich represents a completely dierent DTM to the

    rest o the calendar. We drove in the Olympic stadium

    or the rst time a year ago. As a racing driver you are

    used to ghting head to head with other, but here you

    drive alone against the clock. You drive the whole time

    in rst and second gears, the speed is low. From thetechnical point o view you have to drive extremely

    clean, otherwise it gets very expensive in a fash. In

    2011 the walls were made o concrete. This year plastic

    elements are also used. The pit stops take a bit o

    getting used to. Last year I had mixed eelings. On one

    hand I was the best Audi driver here and was awarded

    my rst DTM trophy. On the other I had an accident on

    Sunday to conclude the event.

    One o the key points is the rst corner which is very

    technical. The last chicane is also important. Its crucial to

    have a good balance and excellent traction out o the slow

    corners in order to be able to overtake at the end o the

    long straight. I really like this track. In 2007, I competed

    in a single-seater series or young talents which was parto the support program or the Formula 1 Grand Prix and

    nished on the podium or the rst time, which is why I

    have ond memories o the Nrburgring. Ive only ever raced

    with ormula cars here beore, now Im intrigued to see the

    track rom a touring car. The biggest dierence is certainly

    that I can now drive across the kerbs. The weather in the

    Eiel can change very quickly, which adds a little more spice

    to the exciting races.

    The circuit is situated in a great place. Running through the

    dunes and close to the sea makes it unique. However, sand

    requently collects alongside the ideal line; you shouldnt

    stray o line as you dont want to lose any grip. This is

    extremely important in qualiying. Zandvoort is one o the

    best tracks on the calendar or me: a traditional track withplenty o character, it is ast, has very ew run-o areas

    and several blind corners. I particularly like the right-hand

    downhill section ater the crest. There are several places

    to overtake at Zandvoort. You can really take advantage

    o mistakes the competition make here. Furthermore,

    the atmosphere among the many spectators is antastic.

    Something thats quiet unique in Zandvoort is that ans can

    combine a trip to the beach with the DTM race.

    Oschersleben is a very special track or me. It has a mixture

    o ast and slow corners and is very selective. The track is

    not very wide; there are also several sections where you

    have to drive hard over the kerbs in a touring car. As a rule,

    overtaking is very dicult you have the opportunity in

    Turn 1 and in the nal corner. Otherwise you only havea chance i the driver in ront makes a mistake. It goes

    without saying thereore that qualiying is extremely

    important or us. The pit stops are just as important since

    the pit lane is extremely long. I have ond memories o

    Oschersleben as I celebrated my rst DTM win here. The

    atmosphere is always great, you notice that there is very

    little motorsport in Northern Germany the ans and very

    interested and appreciative.

    As a driver the most noticeable eature is that the track

    runs anti-clockwise. The majority o race tracks run

    the opposite way round. Valencia has several very ast

    corners like corners 1 and 8. Overtaking is possible in

    the second and nal corners. Special or Valencia is also

    that it is usually very hot; this aects the tires and thetechnology. Great demands are made o the drivers

    tness here. I like Valencia: its my home DTM race.

    All my riends and many ans are here and there is a

    antastic atmosphere. This is motivation enough or me.

    The track is particularly interesting through its mix o

    corners. There are several very slow corners like corner 2

    and the hairpin, but also very ast kinks like turn 1 or the

    entry into the Motodrom. I particularly like the layout since

    the track was modied ten years ago. In the Parabolika

    corner, which was added at that time, you can set-upyoursel perectly to overtake the car in ront. Earlier we

    measured the gaps at Hockenheim in hal-seconds. Over the

    course o the years they have reduced to just a tenth. And

    with the new car generation or 2012 I can guarantee that

    well have to look or the hundredths in order to make the

    dierence. The fair at Hockenheim is particularly great.

    Many spectators visit the nale every year.

    competed, the drivers celebrated wins and championship

    titles in the sign o the our rings. Audi is involved as actory

    in motorsport or more than 30 years; the success story in

    the DTM began 22 years ago with the V8 quattro.

    Legendary V8 daysAudi cleaned up big time with the large V8 quattro: the rst

    two DTM championship titles went to Ingolstadt in 1990

    and 1991 with Hans-Joachim Stuck and Frank Biela. The

    powerul 309 kW (420 hp) V8 engines and the our-wheel

    drive quattro was regarded as the combination to beat. The

    Following Audis temporary withdrawal the our rings wererepresented in the DTM between 2000 and 2003 by team

    Abt Sportsline. Laurent Aiello achieved the eat o winning

    Audi elded the A4 DTM since returning to the DTM in

    the 2004 season. It won the title ve times in eight years

    and is, as a result, the most successul DTM touring car o
