Audi celebrated a title hat-trick in the DTM between 2007

and 2009 and in doing so became the rst manufacturer to

achieve this. Last year the brand was beaten. For this reason

the objective for the 2011 season is: The Audi A4 DTM

should nish at the front again. For this reason Audi has

    rejuvenated its driver squad again.

Eleven events, including a show race in the Olympic Stadium

in Munich, are on the calendar of the highest caliber touring

car race series. While the current DTM cars enter their nal

season, the foundations for the future have been long since

set. The next generation Audi race touring car is already

being developed and should continue Audis success story in

    the DTM from 2012.

The DTM aces a radical change and Audi a challenging task:

The Audi A4 DTM competes or the last time this season

since the current technical regulations, valid since the

2000 season, expire at the end o the year. The A4 DTM

should now fght or its fth championship title ater the

Swede Mattias Ekstrm (2004 and 2007) and German Timo

Scheider (2008 and 2009) each won two championships

    with this model.

Ater a season in which we had to admit deeat we now

target a return to our previous orm, explains Head o

Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich. For this purpose

we will concentrate ully on exploiting the strengths o the

A4 DTM. We have also changed our driver squad and who

drives which cars and also welcome three new drivers into

    the team.

Rahel Frey rom Switzerland, Filipe Albuquerque rom

Portugal and Edoardo Mortara, who has both Italian and

French citizenships, are the three newcomers at Audi. They

all competed previously in ormula racing and all contest

their frst season in touring cars. Filipe Albuquerque as

2010 Italian GT Championship runner-up in an Audi R8

LMS and Edoardo Mortara as ormer Volkswagen actory

driver and deending 2010 Formula 3 Euro Series champion

already have several years o contact with the Group.

Thanks to the new signings, the average age o the driversquad sank by six months to 27 years beore the start o the

season when compared to last year. As a result, Audi starts

with its youngest driver line-up in its DTM history. Three

proven teams enter the nine Audi A4 DTM cars again this

year. Filipe Albuquerque and Edoardo Mortara race or Audi

Sport Team Rosberg while Rahel Frey competes or Audi

Sport Team Phoenix together with her German team mate

Martin Tomczyk. The Spaniard Miguel Molina drives a fth

Audi A4 DTM rom 2008 or the Audi Sport Team Abt Junior.

Mattias Ekstrm, the Briton Oliver Jarvis and Timo Scheider

are the amiliar aces on the grid or Audi Sport Team Abt

Sportsline. Their new team mate is Mike Rockeneller. Like

his three ellow companions, the German Le Mans winner

rom last year also has a cockpit in a 2009 Audi A4 DTM.

Since car development in the DTM was also not permitted

or the 2011 season, engineers concentrate on adapting the

A4 DTM to the tires o new exclusive DTM supplier Hankook.

Being developed in parallel is the successor, christened

internally R17, which should continue Audis success story

in the DTM rom 2012. The new model will establish new

standards worldwide in passive saety in touring cars.

Last year a total o 685,498 spectators ollowed the elevenDTM races at trackside and an average o 1.2 million ans

watched every live broadcast o the races in Germany. In

2011 the DTM stages eleven attractive events including the

inaugural show event at the Munich Olympic Stadium.

The race drivers had an average age

of27 at the start of the season. It is the youngest driver line-up in

Once exoticmaterials inmotorsport and now mass produced

    for the assembly line

An essential basis or motorsport at Audi is the beneft or

the end user, the Audi customer and motorist. Motorsport

was and is always a medium or Audi to develop

technologies with a promising uture, stresses Head o

Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolgang Ullrich. In this way rally and

racing cars, which always also contained technologies o

direct beneft or the customer, have been developed ormore than 30 years in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm.

Example 1: The our-wheel drive quattro that was developed

or a World Rally Championship program was introduced

in 1982 into large-scale production. Audi also proved the

superiority o this drivetrain system in the DTM at the

beginning o the 1990s. To this day customers beneft rom

the actual dynamic handling advantages and not only on

    snow and ice.

Example 2: In material technology feld, motorsport

enjoys the advantage o being able to test components

manuactured in low quantities rom exotic materials

without being subjected to the cost pressures ound in

large-scale production. Audi initially introduced aluminum

to engine and suspension design in rallying at the beginning

o the 1980s, beore the light metal ound avor in large-scale production. Even carbon-fber three decades ago

still an exotic material in race cars like the Audi 200 quattro

Trans-Am and today used in many areas in the Audi A4

DTM is now mass-produced within the concern. The sot

top storage compartment and side panels o the R8 Spyder

are, or example, manuactured rom carbon-fber.

Example 3: Since the 1980s environmental technologies

are also used simultaneously in competition and large-scale

production. Catalytic converter manuacture suppliers used

    Close transfer between sport and

production to the benet of the end user

developments or heat shields which were tested in the

Audi 90 quattro raced in the IMSA GTO series. The Audi V8

quattro rom 1990 was the frst Audi competition car with a

race catalytic converter. Motorsport acted as pioneer or thecombination o turbocharging and gasoline direct injection

ater the TFSI power unit in the Audi R8 sports prototype

proved victorious frst time out at the 24 Hours o Le Mans

in 2001. A ew months later it was introduced into large-

scale production at Audi, acilitates uel savings and reduces

carbon dioxide emissions and thus millionold in public road

    trac.

Example 4: Audi writes history in large-scale production

since 1989 as inventor o TDI technology. The more ecient

and particularly clean diesel direct injection makes a

signifcant contribution to sinking CO2 emissions. In 2006

at Le Mans Audi became the worlds frst manuacturer

to claim overall victory in the 24 hour race using diesel

technology. Extreme injection and ignition pressures,

structural solutions in the crankcase or with the pistonsand injector technology development are areas in which

Audi practices a direct transer between motorsport and

production. The most recent development or Le Mans, the

Audi R18, is equipped with a 3.7 liter V6 TDI. The principle

o downsizing, rapidly gaining increasing importance in

street cars, is also now implemented in the R18 and helps in

the search or solutions under extreme demands.

Two future projects on the horizon

Audi Sport was established more than three decades

ago and is today still aliated with Audis Technical

Development (TE) department. Be it rallying, touring

cars o every type or sports cars: The Sport department

has celebrated important victories and won numerous

championship titles in every discipline in which it has

competed. Audi has tackled 18 dierent motorsport

projects between 1980 and today. Currently around

200 employees at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm sites areresponsible or the development and testing o the race

cars. The Doctor o Mechanical Engineering Dr. Wolgang

Ullrich is Head o Audi Sport is since 1993.

    Program with two priorities

While quattro GmbH develops the Audi customer sport cars

since the beginning o 2011, Audi Sport concentrates on the

race cars destined or actory programs in touring car and

prototype racing. In 2011 this is no less than our dierent

race cars. The Audi R15 TDI competed in its fnal evolution

step at Sebring in March. Parallel to this Audi Sport

develops the R18 or all remaining Intercontinental Le Mans

Cup (ILMC) events. The coup is designed with the uture in

mind and was planned or electrifcation o the drivetrain.

Furthermore, in 2011 the next touring car rom Audi Sport,

reerred to internally as R17, is developed and tested and

should fght or the DTM title in 2012.

    Audi has the uture frmly

Lightweight design is core know-how at Audi

0 percent weight reduction since 00

The Audi A4 DTM competes in its highest evolution orm

in 2011 beore new regulations come into orce in 2012.

Although any kind o technical evolutions are prohibited

since August 17, 2009 to maintain cost eciency, Audi

made signifcant progress beorehand during the live cycle

o each o the individual A4 DTM generations since 2004.

Lightweight design and construction, a core talent at Audi,

are o equal importance in motorsport and large-scale

production. The basic weight o a DTM touring car was

reduced by more than 20 percent. Aim o the exercise:

The ballast required to reach the minimum weight can be

arranged in dierent positions in the car to achieve the best

    possible weight distribution.

The cars center o gravity, which inuences the dynamic

behavior, was reduced by more than ten percent during

this period. Notable: Both targets were achieved without

compromising the crucial torsional stiness o the chassis.

The aerodynamic characteristics o the dierent A4

generations have also improved considerably. In motorsport

the ratio between air resistance and downorce

aerodynamic eciency is important. It was improved bymore than 20 percent.

The Audi A4 DTM was improved signifcantly since 2004

An Audi DTM driver squad has never

    been so young

Audi has changed its DTM driver line-up signicantly

compared to last year by adding three newcomers and

initiating two cockpit reshues: Only our drivers Mattias

Ekstrm, Oliver Jarvis, Miguel Molina and Timo Scheider sit

in the same cockpits as 2010. The average age o the driver

squad sinks by hal-a-year to 27 beore the start o the

season. The Audi DTM squad has never been so young.

The our Audi A4 DTM o 2008 vintage entered by Audi

Sport Team Phoenix and Audi Sport Team Rosberg have

new drivers at the wheel: The two newcomers Filipe

Albuquerque (P) and Edoardo Mortara (I/F) y the ag or

the Rosberg team rom Neustadt an der Weinstrae. Both

drivers switch rom ormula cars to touring car cockpits.

Rahel Frey (CH) has also primarily driven ormula cars in her

career up to now. At Phoenix Racing the Swiss is new team

mate to Martin Tomczyk who also competes or the team

rom Meuspath or the rst time. Mike Rockeneller (D)

takes Tomczyks place at Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.

The Le Mans winner rom last year qualied or promotion

as best Audi driver o year-old car in the 2010 season.

Oliver Jarvis (GB) completes his second season or theKempten squad. Also Mattias Ekstrm (S) and Timo

Scheider (D), who have both won the DTM twice already,

race as beore or Hans-Jrgen Abts team. In their latest

generation cars they once again spearhead Audis challenge

    or championship honors.

Miguel Molina (E), best rookie in the DTM in his debut

Filipe Albuquerque (P) Did you know that

The Portuguese contests the 2011 DTM season as one o

three newcomers at Audi. The 25-year old talent impressed

Audi at a driver trial. His classic career path led him rom

karts into national and international entry-level ormula

classes and via the GP2 series into Formula 1 as test driver

or Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

This season he races in a touring car or the rst time in

his career, but not or the rst time in an Audi. In 2009

and 2010 he contested the Italian GT Championship in an

Audi R8 LMS and nished last year as runner-up. Shortly

aterwards he went on to beat Sebastian Vettel and

Sbastien Loeb in the Race o Champions.

Filipe Albuquerque likes radio controlled 1 : 10 scale

When the DTM was newly established for the 2000

season those responsible proved to be courageous and

possess great vision: Contrary to all international trends

the responsible committees devised regulations that

permitted equally spectacular and safe race cars, opened

the path to cost-eective engines through long service

lives and with standard components scotched a technical

escalation in various areas (propshafts, gearboxes, brakes

    and tires).

In an economically strained environment the DTM

reacted by introducing another intelligent step: Technical

development is frozen since 2009, however, the sport

remains just as exciting as before but with lower costs.

This proven system is replaced in 2012 by technical

regulations which will set entirely new safety standards

    internationally.

Fans are the focus of attention

With all due progress the series has never forgotten its

roots: Since 1984 the DTM epitomizes accessible sport

open paddocks for the fans, fair admission prices,

autograph sessions with the stars and, in the meantime,

a view of the teams at work during a pit walk through the

pit lane. An attractive supporting program comprisedof other races and concerts in the pit lane attracts large

    crowds.

    Positive and broad public awareness

The DTM once again achieved great public awareness:

62,318 fans visited the races; a total of 685,500 spectators

followed the DTM races at trackside. An average of

1.2 million motorsport fans followed the races broadcast on

    TV screens by ARD.

Series with German roots and international impact

The DTM has its roots in Germany and has for years now a

calendar of great international air. This year races in Great

Britain, the Netherlands, Spain and a return to Austria are

on the agenda. Seven events in Germany, including the

inaugural show race at the Olympic Stadium in Munich,

    remain the core events.

    Zandvoort (NL)

    Timo Scheider

In my opinion Zandvoort is the most challenging track

on the calendar. There is every type of corner; its as if

they were made for a DTM car: extremely quick sections

through which you feel the aerodynamic downforce, slow

corners, and also kerbs which you have to drive across hard.

The second third of the track has been resurfaced more

recently than the rest of the track. When you arrive at the

slower corners in the nal third of the track you have to be

careful not to overdrive the car and lose time. Traditionally

the best overtaking place is at the end of the start-nish

straight braking for Tarzanbocht. An issue that only exists

at Zandvoort is the wind from the North Sea and the sand

from the dunes. The combination of both makes it dicult

    to predict track conditions.

I raced three times at Spielberg. The circuit was very

picturesque and rural. I always felt at home there. It

was a great track. Then the reconstruction stage came

during which it was never sure whether the circuit would

survive. Luckily its on the calendar again. Its great to be

going back there again. Im particularly looking forward

to the challenging circuit layout. The altitude dierences

were something special beforehand. Itll be fantastic

to drive through the rst corner and to look up the long

straight all the way to the second corner. There used to

be a church behind it I hope its still there. You could

even see cows there. There were more than enough

photo opportunities! Its great fun to drive through such

    a picturesque landscape.

We race at a state-of-the-art facility in the Lausitz. Its

enormous, which is why you dont really notice the great

crowds of people. The fans there are very faithful to

the DTM. This modern circuit is very safe for us drivers,

and the wide pit lane give the teams advantages while

working. I have good memories of last year when I was

best Audi driver there. The low grip oered by the track

surface is very noticeable. The braking and mechanical

grip for traction is particularly important there. The

aerodynamic set-up is also important in the long right-

hand corner in the second part of the circuit. You can

overtake after this corner, and also under braking for the

following left-hand corner as well as after the start-

    nish line.

The atmosphere at this historical venue is simply

incomparable at a motorsport event like the DTM. Because

the fans can sit in the middle we quite literally drive around

them a very unusual but great feeling. The track surface

is very special: Normal roads and car parks mean that the

grip levels dier enormously. It is also quite bumpy. It is

one of the best tracks for overtaking on the calendar: You

can attack out of the slip stream going into turn 1 and also

before the nal corner. I have fond memories of the track.

In my debut Formula 3 year in 200 I nished third, last

about points and race driving, but also about having

fun, about an event in the city center and about other

entertainment such as the appearance of musicians.

The spectacle DTM expands yet again, and this in such

a small, tightly packed melting pot! If the arena is full

it will certainly be a fabulous atmosphere. Im looking

forward to it and only need 40 minutes to drive here

from my hometown. It will certainly be something new

again, never before seen in the DTM. The tight and twisty

circuit will be a surprise for all of us. Everybody is already

interested in it, how it should work, since it will be an

entirely new experience with our cars.

The rst corner is special. Braking is important; the

compression in this corner is something that Im only

aware of at the Nrburgring. Its important to take as much

momentum as possible at this point. A double-left follows.

You have to be patient here as its easy to overdrive the carif you want too much. The circuit short cut, which is o

camber, follows afterwards. After a left and a right corner

the track then heads towards a fast curve that is followed

by a chicane which slows us down. Ill have to attack the

kerbs in the chicane with the DTM car. In Formula 3 a lot is

asked of the tires on this track. Im intrigued to see whether

this phenomenon is also apparent in a DTM car. My smooth

driving style should help me at the Nrburgring. I really like

    the track.

Brands Hatch is the shortest track on the calendar, but

it is also very technical and extremely dicult to achieve

a perfect lap. There arent many corners, but every small

mistake costs you dearly because the margins in qualifying

are so small. Often only thousandths of a second separateus. Brands Hatch is one of my favorite tracks and Paddock

Hill bend is one of best corners in the world. When you

come over the crest you cant see the apex. The track then

drops away. You have to exit this corner very cleanly if

you are to have any chance of attacking under braking in

the uphill section before Druids. This is the best point to

overtake. The spectators can see almost every corner from

    the grandstands.

I won the last time I raced at Oschersleben in a junior

series. The track is very technical and large number of

long bends turns 1, 3 and 4 are very challenging. The

chicane is dicult because you have to be able to assess

exactly how to drive over the kerbs. Itll certainly be totallydierent in a DTM car than before with a formula car. The

tarmac was very gentle to the tires on my race car when

Ive driven there, but it can be totally dierent in touring

car racing. Overtaking is very dicult around this track. The

rst and the sixth corner are probably most suitable corners

to attack, and not forgetting the entry to the S on the

back straight. If you make a small mistake you are quickly

    overtaken yourself.

I really hope to be able to welcome lots of spectators

as there is such a fantastic atmosphere at this track. As

a driver the most unusual feature is the anti-clockwise

driving direction the majority of the tracks run in

exactly the other direction. The rst and eighth cornersare particularly fast, while the braking points at the

second and last corner are very important. Overtaking is

most likely in the nal corner, maybe also in the second

corner. I have good memories of my home race because
