This is theway to move up the corporate ladder.UNBLOCKING CAREER PROMOTIONIt is well known that project engineers and mangersbegin their careers with a limited knowledge ofmanagement skills. They learn personnel and technicalmanagement, financial control of constructionoperations and other management techniques on thejob only. This learning takes very long time and isseldom certificated. Promotion channels get blockedand only horizontal job mobility takes place. In 1985-86, it organised roving workshopson Construction Project Management at BAI Centresat Baroda, Bangalore, Bombay, Trichi, Delhi andCalcutta where the participants were mostly fromcontracting sector. In the same year, similar workshopswere held for client’s engineers: CPWD, HUDCO, DDAand MHADA. In all these workshops, there was apersistent demand on NICMAR to extend its servicesto persons who desired career improvement but wereunable to do as they were working in the interior / far

off places or project sites or unable to take time offrequired to attend courses in educational institutions.Suggestions also kept coming forth that NICMAR shouldactivate a continuing forum for senior executives todiscuss specific problems common to all in the industry.Pressed by the persistent demand from constructionprofessionals, BAI, OCCI & others, and impressed bythe operations and delivery methods of the British OpenUniversity, NICMAR has decided to include DistanceEducation in the project proposal that was being draftedfor UNDP Technical Assistance. A year later, the UNDPgranted its approval to finance the project andestablishing a Distance Education programme becamea UNDP programme. Thus, NICMAR, Centre ofDistance Education (CODE) was set up in July 1988 atMumbai and relocated to Pune in 1992.CODE was re-christened as NICMAR School ofDistance Education (NICMAR SODE) in 2004. Theoretical coursesaim to improve the students' understanding of certainfundamental phenomena and relationships thatcharacterize the changing world in which managersmust operate. Applied courses, which occupy thebulk of the students time, link the theoretical studiesto practical problems in the construction andinfrastructure development projects.PROGRAMME DESIGNThe programme Design is modular. A module is of 6months duration, has 4 courses for study, 4assignment to write, one seminar to attend andexaminations. One course involves 10 lessons andeach lesson needs 7 hours of self-study.A Certificate Programme is of one Module, GraduateProgramme has 2 Modules and Post GraduateProgramme has 4 modules.STUDY PROCEDURESA student must register for one module at a time,take examinations at the end of six months and passat least two courses, then register for the next module.ADMISSIONAdmission is open to candidates from India and abroadin the months of June and December every year.EXAMINATIONSExaminations of the SODE Programmes are heldtwice a year, generally in the months of June andDecember at the end of each Module. It is a Coursewise

written examination. It may be deskresearch requiring collecting, collation and analysisof statistical data, another could be a live problemon the projects or sites where a student is working;still another could be a computer model building suchas designing a computer model of quality control/safety management/material and stores managementsystem or it may be a case study of an organisation,a project or a phenomenon. The topic should beresearchable in the given time and have bearing onthe performance of the construction industry. Itshould involve scientific design of a study, collectionand analysis of data and writing a report in anacceptable academic style. The Project Work - LongPaper may be of around 12500 words, about 50typed pages of A-4 size. It should be bound in anacademic style and 2 copies submitted to the SODEoffice. The Project Work - Long Paper will beprepared as a part of the Independent Study module.COMPUTER PROFICIENCYThis involves learning and acquiring proficiency inthe use of project management software packages -MS Project and P3. Students make independentarrangements with local computer training centresor at their workplaces. NICMAR campuses may alsooffer this training to SODE students if sufficientnumbers enroll at any one time.PLACEMENTA Placement Cell functions at Pune Campus. PostGraduate Programme students, on completion of theCourse, can register with the Placement Cell. SODEwill assist them to obtain suitable placements onrequest. Those qualified and interested may registertheir requests with the Dean, SODE on the prescribedform.PAYMENT OF FEESThe Schedule of Fees and other charges for variousprogrammes are given in later paras. The followingpoints may be noted by all students.i. Fees once paid are non-refundable.ii. The fees will be forfeited if a student, afterhaving been enrolled, leaves studies in-between

or fails to complete them successfully.iii. Fees are payable by Demand Draft drawn infavour of NICMAR-SODE, payable at Pune.Personal cheques and cash are not accepted.iv. The fees and other dues payable at the time ofadmission are mentioned in the Admission Letteritself and should be paid within 15 days of theissue of the admission letter.v. Late fee @ Rs.50 for every day of delay fromthe stipulated date will be levied upto 10 daysand thereafter the studentship may be cancelled.STUDY MATERIALSThe study material for a Programme typicallycomprises the following:- Lesson Book- Assignments (where prescribed)- Textbooks prescribed in the Syllabus(Minimum of one text book per course)Reference materials mentioned in the syllabus.Students are advised to buy the Text Books whereverpossible. Reference materials are available in locallibraries. They may contact SODE office in case ofany difficulty.CAMPUS FACILITIESAll SODE students can use facilities at NICMARCampus at Pune, Delhi and Hyderabad. These facilitiesinclude libraries and computer centres. With priorarrangement, hostel accommodation can be used.LIBRARIESEach campus is equipped with a library. The mainlibrary is at the Pune campus. This is a specializedlibrary in construction management and theconstruction industry. It holds a collection of over10,000 titles, documents and reference material.Libraries subscribes to all major technical andprofessional journals relevant to the mainline workof the Institute.The library provides text book service to studentsand research/ reference support to faculty andscholars and useful information to constructionenterprises. It is fully computerized and staffed byprofessionally qualified and computer proficientlibrarians and documentalists.NICMAR libraries at Pune, Delhi and Hyderabad areavailable to all SODE students.COMPUTER CENTRESNICMAR campuses at Pune, Delhi and Hyderabadmaintain well equipped and modern computercentres. Each computer centre has sufficient numberof computers of the latest technology. Internet and

e-mail facilities are available at all locations. Allimportant software packages of projectmanagement, estimating, quantity surveying,inventory control, accounting, personnel handling etc.are available at the Centres. The Computer Centresare headed by qualified and experienced staff andthey are open about 16 hours a day.SODE students may use the computer centre on priorarrangements with the Campus Director. Diploma holders of Graduate Diploma in ProjectManagement (GDPM) of NICMAR are eligiblefor PDCM programme.FEES AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE(For Indian Nationals resident in India)The total fees payable is Rs. 50,000 plus admissionfee of Rs.2,000 and a refundable deposit of Rs.3,000. The deposit is refunded only on successfulcompletion of the course for which admission isgranted. The schedule of payment is as under:Ö Rs. 17,500 on receipt of admission letter.Ö Rs. 12,500 on registration for Second Module.Ö Rs. 12,500 on registration for Third Module.Ö Rs. 12,500 on completion of Third Module andstart of Independent Study Module.(For NRI and Foreign Students)The total fee for the entire course for NRI
