Your questions answered:After 22 years in practice and

over 50,000 treatmentsI have seen many interesting cases.

Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40. For appointments and enquiries ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

Topic of the month: Common Causes of Muscle Pain

David V Jones BSc(Hons)DO Registered Osteopath

www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk

The majority of muscle pain is not caused by disease but by dysfunction such as overuse, injury and strain, poor posture, bad habits and chronic tension etc. However there are some other causes that are quite commonly seen in practice:Polymyalgia rheumaticaThis is a rheumatological complaint usually seen in the over 65s and more commonly in women. It shows up as shoulder and hip muscle pain and is confirmed with a blood test. The only treatment is oral steroids and it does not respond to physical therapy. Myalgia with fluOften during flu epidemics patients phone in to say that all their old injuries have returned. Then often they phone again before they have had a chance to come in, to say they have gone down with flu. The flu virus causes muscle pain and tends to feel worse at old injury sites.

Fibromyalgia syndromeThis is a relatively newly acknowledged condition

which causes widespread muscle pain and may be accompanied by sleep disturbance, depression, gut problems etc. There is no specific treatment but massage and acupuncture are often helpful in managing the symptoms and I have many patients who attend regularly for this.

Reaction to medication With increasing numbers of people being put on statins for high cholesterol, I see more and more cases of people suffering muscle pain as a side effect. As there are a number of different such drugs to reduce cholesterol, it is often wise to try a different statin which may eliminate the problem.

“Trapped nerves”One of the consequences of nerve irritation is that the muscles supplied by the compressed nerve become tight and painful through receiving the wrong electrical signals. I spend much of my working life trying to work on these mechanically irritated nerves using manipulation and acupuncture to stimulate the nerve supply.

Happy New Year!I’ve set myself a new goal, to publish a photo of life in our area on every single day of 2013. Its made me look at our area through new eyes. I’m stopping to photograph places that last year I took for granted. I’m spotting the little details of daily life that used to go un-noticed. You can see the results on our website, allaboutmalvernhills.com. Of course getting outdoors to take a photo was more effort during the recent snow, but despite all the cold, slipping and sliding, Malvern really is a beautiful place to live, whatever the weather.

Besides an interesting article on how Valentine’s can be a good day for everybody, this edition is already showing signs of Spring, with Mother’s Day and Easter around the corner. You will be able to fi nd out where to eat, shop and enjoy these moments in our local area.

Enjoy the read,

The Worcester Competitive Arts Festival is a chance for young people to show off their talents and compete for prizes. Malvern does particularly well when it comes to winners, and several local people play a key part in its success.

The Festival was started in 195l by the County’s then-music inspector Arthur Benoy with the aim of encouraging young people across Worcestershire to compete for prizes in acting, verse speaking, music and singing. There is also a chance for very young children, aged six and under to perform a ‘Party Piece’. Candidates learn from constructive comments from adjudicators who are fully qualified.

The festival takes place annually at the Royal Grammar School in Worcester, this year on 9th and 16th March, followed by a Festival Concert a few days later held in Perrins Hall. It’s run by a small group of volunteers who are involved in some way in the arts. Each year more than a thousand students of Music and Drama participate. The festival is open to all.

Although entry to this year’s festival is closed, if you’d like more detail you can contact the Secretary, Marian Walters on 01905 820558 or by email at [email protected]

Michael Lunney from Malvern is the President of the Festival. He is also a theatrical producer and director, he is based in Malvern from where he runs a theatre company. Here he tells us why he decided to become involved with the Festival.

local young talent on show

Encouraging young people into the arts is a difficult thing because it’s a fickle business at the best of times. Having said that, we must support them and the arts are a great tool for developing their personality. Even if they don’t choose it as a profession is does build tremendous confidence.

The Festival offers a competitive environment which I think is good for the entrants to experience. It can be a dog-eat-dog world out there, particularly in the arts.

I have started the Michael Lunney Award which sounds very grand but it gives a young person the chance to sample life on the road with a professional touring theatre company. They get a week with us and last year the winner spent time with us as we took ‘The Importance Of Being

Earnest’ to Cardiff. She saw the rigours of setting up a touring production, lighting it, marketing it and performing it before putting everything back into the wagon and moving on again. She absolutely loved it and wants to become an actress, the experience really did inspire her!

As I see it, the arts are there for everybody and that’s what I want this Festival to promote. We are tapping into this unknown ability, bringing

it out and giving a shy child an idea of how to manifest their ability. I am interested in bringing more young people to the Festival from state schools, I’m all for giving people a chance wherever possible.

Some of the young people who perform at the Festival are truly incredible. Such talent must be in their DNA, and in some cases, despite their tender years they are already prolific concert pianists and actors. It’s incredible to watch.

Emily Gray from Malvern won the Under-16s Acting prize last year.

‘You have to perform a three minute piece from any play or book, and I chose the part of Blanche Dubois in a scene from ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. I felt my performance at the festival went well and I enjoyed myself. Before the results were announced I thought it was between me and another girl who was amazing, so if she’d won I wouldn’t have been surprised.’

‘The element of competition adds a measure of not just doing your best, but achieving something more. It adds some extra pressure, with nerves and everything. It’s a different experience to act in front of a crowd that’s judging you. It’s both exciting and scary. It’s a good experience, I would recommend it, it’s another opportunity to get out there and show others what you can do.’

‘I am planning to enter again this year, it would be good to win a second time. After that I am off to university next year, where I hope to join a drama group and continue acting there.’

Peter Shepherd from Malvern is in his final year at school, and is a talented pianist. He won last year’s music prize in the solo recital class.

‘The requirement for the prize is to perform fifteen minutes of music on one instrument. I was competing against twelve other talented competitors. I played Bach and then Brahms. I have entered for the past three years and its good fun, like all festivals it has a special atmosphere. I have also accompanied friends who are competing on other instruments and I was honoured when the festival asked me to be one of their official accompanists. ‘

‘In terms of my piano playing, the festival pushed

me further. Before, I had only performed at school. The first time I competed I was 14 years old, and I won my class. I beat a girl who was only 10 and already an amazing pianist. I beat her by a slither. My teacher got me into this and helped by suggesting pieces I could play. It gives confidence. I definitely recommend it, there are many classes to enter, it can be stressful but everybody enjoys it. It’s a great thing for the people who take part.’

MARVIN GOODGER CARPENTRY

www.goodcarpentry.co.uk

Stephen Bound, who joined Malvern Hills Conservators as Director in July 2012, gives his early impressions of working for the organisation that protects and manages the hills and commons of Malvern. ‘It’s been an incredibly busy 6 months but I can honestly say that I’ve loved every minute of it’ says Stephen. ‘The job is very challenging but very interesting and each day brings something different’. One of the things that has really impressed Stephen is the passion that people have for the local area. ‘So many people take an interest in the well-being of the Hills and Commons. They really care for the landscape and value the access that they have to it. Every day we get letters, e-mails and phone calls commenting on the work we do. Of course we can’t please everybody, but I’m always genuinely happy to hear people’s views. After all, the Hills are such an important community resource and it’s only right that people feel that they are able to have a say in their management’.

New Director takes to life in the Hills at Malvern Hills Conservators

Conservation

One of the topics which gives rise to questions from the public is the clearance of trees and scrub; there are those who would like to see more trees removed and those who oppose their removal. ‘There’s no doubt that some people hate to see trees chopped down’, Stephen acknowledges. ‘However, if we didn’t carry out the clearance then we would lose large areas of wildlife rich grassland, along with the fl owers, insects, birds and other species they support. We’d also lose the iconic outline of the Hills and many of the views for which the Hills are rightly famous’.Stephen is optimistic about the future. ‘We have a really dedicated team of staff and volunteers and a Board of Conservators who have the best interests of the Hills and Commons at heart. I’m confi dent that together we can continue the excellent work that the Conservators have being doing to protect and manage the land for the last 129 years’.

How everyone can enjoya happy Valentine’s Day

3. Cultivate gratitude. Try ten minutes of a spiritual practice called ‘Nei Quan’. To do this sit quietly and ask yourself three questions about your last 24 hours (or the past week) – ‘What have I received?’ ‘What have I offered in return?’ and ‘What trouble has my existence caused?’ We are all very dependent on many other objects and people, and receive much that we haven’t asked for or earned. Refl ecting on what we receive every day can help us cultivate an attitude of gratitude. 4. Think about giving and not receiving. After cultivating gratitude, make a list of fi ve things you’d like to offer to friends, family or strangers on Valentine’s Day. This might be the offer of doing the washing up all day, cleaning an elderly relative’s car, giving some money to charity, baking, calling a friend you haven’t spoken to for ages, smiling at your neighbour even if he never has the time to smile at you… What can you offer?5. Be your own Valentine. What will make you happy? A long hot bath with some lavender oil? A trip to your favourite museum or church? Permission to stay in bed late at the weekend and read a novel? Ordering some new fl ower seeds to plant in the Spring? Think of three small things you could give to yourself and enjoy! 6. Give yourself permission to cancel Valentine’s Day! If none of the previous suggestions work for you, then just make a plan for the evening which means you don’t have to pay any attention to what other people might be doing. I do hope you can see past all the commercialism and rediscover some of the spirit of those early Christian saints like Valentinus and his clandestine marriages.

By Satyavani (Fiona) Robyn from Malvern

How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Are you looking forward to a cosy romantic evening with your beloved? Or do you have mixed feelings, maybe because your current relationship is feeling a bit diffi cult, or because you’re single? Let’s reclaim Valentine’s Day… here’s how! What do we know about the early history of Valentine’s Day? There were many early Christian martyrs called Valentinus (or Valentine), with Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni both being honoured on February the 14th. Until the poet Chaucer linked Valentine’s Day with romantic love in the 14th century (in ‘Parlement of Foules’), there were no strong associations between St Valentine’s and romance or fertility. There is also the legend of one of these Saint Valentines who, in jail and about to be executed for helping Christians escape from persecution, performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer Asterius. He was also said to have performed clandestine Christian weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. The Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that married men didn’t make good soldiers, but Saint Valentine helped them to sanctify their love and risked his own life to do so. Different groups of people celebrate Valentine’s Day in different ways in modern times, and so we can borrow these traditions. In Norfolk ‘Jack Valentine’ will leave presents of sweets and presents for children – you might know some children who’d appreciate a Valentine’s gift! We might also want to do the same as they do in Finland. Here, Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”. With this in mind, here are my suggestions for planning for a happy Valentine’s Day with generous dashes of love…1. Wipe the slate clean. You might have had a bad experience of Valentine’s Day previously, but this year is a new year. It’s okay to leave some space to feel sad about things, but this Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity to have a difference experience, and to look forwards. 2. Make Valentine’s your own. Don’t worry about listening to what the media, your friends or the shops think you ought to do for Valentine’s Day.

Inspired by International Women’s Day as a focal point for women globally, a group of Malvern women are working with Oxfam’s national campaign, ‘Get Together’ to fundraise for women’s projects in developing countries. An all day event on Saturday 9th March at The Grove in Avenue Rd, Malvern, will feature a diverse programme of inspiring, creative and informative events. Workshops and storytelling, hands-on creativity and art, performance, dance and meditation; stalls for local women’s enterprise, tasters for yoga, pilates and other fi tness programmes; information and an educational talk from Oxfam about their projects; a Pamper Room and a Red Tent space, plus fi lm screenings of ‘The Moon Inside You’ and Red Tent movie ‘Things We Don’t Talk About’. All are welcome at the event which runs from 10am to 10pm. Entry and participation is on a donation basis, with funds raised supporting an Oxfam women’s project nominated by the organising team. His Holiness The Dalai Lama once said “Some people may call me a feminist… but we need more effort to promote basic human values — human compassion, human affection. And in that

‘Get Together’ Malvern inspiring women locally, supporting women globally

respect, females have more sensitivity for others’ pain and suffering... the world will be saved by western women”. This event is a demonstration of how western women can unite in support of each other locally and globally, to inspire each other and celebrate our achievements, to share experiences, skills and knowledge with one another. The spirit of unity and compassion moves out through our fundraising ‘Get Together’ to support women in developing countries; raising awareness of the importance of women as producers of food or creators of cottage industries; funding ‘on the ground’ projects to provide training and income for women to support their families’ welfare. This event aims to demonstrate just what’s possible when western women follow their inspired calling to get together and create. All are welcome to join in this celebration of the feminine spirit!

For further information go to Oxfam ‘Get Together’ at www.oxfam.org.uk or email [email protected] for the full programme of events.

Who created the birds?Walenty Pytel is an internationally respected metal sculptor. He is Polish, but has lived in England since childhood, and today is based in south Herefordshire. Among his many works, he created a large sculpture of Heraldic Beasts outside the state entrance to Westminster Hall in London, which was commissioned by Parliament for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. The Buzzard sculpture for Rosebank Gardens, commissioned by Malvern Town Council, was created to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year for Malvern.

And why two buzzards?Five years ago I rang Walenty up and asked him if we could meet. He was enormously enthusiastic and told me he had always wanted to create something for Malvern. After our initial meeting, he came to Malvern to visit Rosebank Gardens. We stood there for some time, wondering what the best subject for the sculpture might be, when a pair of buzzards appeared in the sky some distance away. At that moment, he immediately said ‘I would love to create buzzards’, so that’s how it came about. This is likely to be the last large sculpture he will ever make.

Was there a bigger idea behind installing this in Rosebank Gardens? The gardens were gifted to the town by Dyson Perrins but in recent years had become somewhat neglected. Malvern Town Council accepted responsibilty for them just over a year ago. This project has helped revitalise the whole area with the result that many more people come to visit Rosebank Gardens. They also act as a Gateway to the Hills with a set of steps and a path leading up to St Ann’s Well, from where keen walkers can fi nd their way onto the Worcestershire Beacon.

All About... The Buzzards

What has reaction been to the buzzards? Both the Town Clerk and myself have been very grateful for the messages, cards and comments sent to us. Genuinely, without exaggerating, we have received an overwhelming number of positive messages and comments. I walk through Rosebank Gardens every day and deliberately talk to other passersby, to see what they think of it. I must have spoken to 60 people, visitors and locals, and every single one has been positive. People are taking photos of it and posting them on the internet, while one local business has even produced a Buzzard Sculpture greeting card, which is selling well. I hope that it is becoming a landmark for Malvern which is getting us noticed further afi eld.

Is the work now finished? Our funding partners, Malvern Hills District Council, are collaborating with us to make the gardens a key destination as part of the ‘Route to the Hills’. The objective is to create a walking route from Great Malvern station through the town, which will direct visitors using high quality signage and interpretation boards. We are planning an offi cial unveiling of the sculpture in the next few months, we can’t yet confi rm who it will be but we’re hoping for somebody notable.

Malvern’s new public sculpture in Rosebank Gardens is awaiting its official unveiling, which it’s hoped may happen this spring. Peter Smith, founder of the Autumn in Malvern festival, worked for several years to see it commissioned and installed.

Carl Flint, writer of three ‘Pictorial Guide’ books of the Malvern Hills, introduces his first local walk on the hills. From the Clock Tower in North Malvern to West Malvern via Table Hill and End Hill, you will be able to enjoy beautiful views and learn about our local history along the way.

Carl admits it took him four years to complete his fi rst pictorial guide, which was published nearly three years ago. ‘It was a huge amount of work’ he says. ‘It started when I looked in libraries and bookshops, and although there were some books with local walking routes, and others on local history, I couldn’t fi nd anything that put the two together. I’m a keen runner and I know all the local paths, so I combined that knowledge with research on local history.’ The fi rst book had just two walks but at 220 pages long there was a huge amount of information contained within its covers. ‘When I give talks, people sometimes like to challenge me, and think they know everything about the town they live in. I always manage to tell them something they didn’t know before! My favourite example is the dragons on rooftops. A builder in Victorian times must have had stylised ridge tiles made, and used them on several local buildings including one on St Ann’s Road.’Carl has now published three books which contain plenty of illustrations. He’s working towards a fourth, and is currently researching a route leading from West Malvern to Brockhill Drive. ‘These are not boring guide books that simply say ‘walk a hundred metres and turn left’ says Carl, ‘I create something people can enjoy reading at home as much as taking outdoors.’

books of the Malvern Hills, introduces his first

This delightful if somewhat strenuous 2.3 mile walk starts from either the North Hill or Tank Quarry car parks on the North Malvern Road, map reference SO 7705 4700. The path up to Table Hill is very steep and therefore not suitable for buggies or for very young children. There are far-reaching views across Herefordshire to the west, Shropshire to the far north-west with the Severn Valley and Worcestershire to the East. The return journey is via West Malvern. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes without refreshment breaks. North Hill 397 metres, (1303 feet), Table Hill 372 metres and End Hill 329 metres. To download the full details of the walk, please to go our website www.allaboutmalvernhills/Local Life and click the ‘Historic Walks on the Malvern Hills’ window.

Malvern was the 18th Town in this country to gain Fairtrade status, so we were involved with the movement from an early stage. In those days it might have been seen as something unusual, but when you see how mainstream we have become, you realise what a brilliant job the Fairtrade movement has done. Our job is to keep the issue in the public eye. Our work has many supporters, including the Town Council, but we’re also very grateful for support from local shops, restaurants, businesses and churches who stock and use Fairtrade products. Our members are vital to keep the group active, quite a few of the original group are still involved, but we are always looking for people to be active members so please get in touch if you are interested.

Being Fairtrade certified, bearing the Fairtrade mark, means not only that the producers are paid a fair price for their products but also that developing communities and businesses receive extra investment from the Fairtrade Premium. This results in the producers receiving a recognised payment for their hard work and receiving help to improve the health care, education and development of the communities in which they live. Producers also have a democratic say in decision making, women are included, and farmers enjoy rights including a decent wage and being allowed to join unions. Several agricultural chemicals are forbidden on Fairtrade-certified farms, helping to protect humans and the environment.

The Fairtrade Foundation believes in a different way of doing business. It’s a way that puts the poorest in the world first by tackling poverty and injustice through fairer trade giving them a better deal for the work they do. Fairtrade is a grassroots movement stretching around the world uniting producers and consumers, communities and individuals.

Since the early days the number of Fairtrade

MalvernFair Trade GroupMalvern Fairtrade Group was formed in 2001 and achieved Fairtrade status for the town two years later. Mary Wetherall, one of the group’s founder members tells us more.

Community focus

products has increased beyond all expectations of the early pioneers of the movement. Our products now range from the original tea, coffee, chocolate, and bananas to include a wide range of dried and fresh fruits, nuts, wine, cotton, jewellery and of course sugar, even footballs, all bearing the Fairtrade mark.

Each year at the end of February and the beginning of March, Fairtrade fortnight is an opportunity to raise the profile of Fairtrade locally in shops, schools, churches and businesses. Our Malvern group has, since its inception at the turn of the century, organised events, displays, food tastings and promotions within Malvern. This year on 9 March, a local Traidcraft rep, Mary Flynn from St Andrew’s Church at Poolbrook is to give a talk on her recent visit to India to explore what difference Fairtrade has made to communities there. The evening will also include a ‘Puddings tasting’, of course using Fairtrade products (you will find details of future events at www.allaboutmalvernhills.com and page 50).

The idea of Fairtrade may have started off small but it has grown to become a force that nobody dared to hope for. Now part of a worldwide organisation, an intricate web of campaigners, partners, farmers and friends criss-crosses its way around the globe from Malvern to the tea farmers of Malawi. After reading this, please don’t forget to look out for the ever increasing range of Fairtrade products.

If you’d like to get in touch with the local group, you can email [email protected] or call (01684) 574346
