________________________ Caldecote Photo Competition Well done to Dan Talmage who is the winner of our December competition on the subject of Animals (front cover).

The deadline for entries is the 8 March 2012. Please email to [email protected] by no later than this date.

Friends of Comberton Area Library Brenda Brown, director of Cantabile presented a cheque for £300 at the end of the Christmas concert in the Village Hall on 2nd December and the raffle organised by committee members Angela, Sophie and Jane raised a further £88.50. FOCAL can now purchase a unit to display magazines available to lend and fund volunteer run events in 2012. Many thanks to all performers. 15 Friends groups met Library managers and Cllr David Hardy at Cambourne Library on 9th December. Full notes on the meeting are on the FOCAL website http://friendsofcombertonlibrary.wordpress.com/ but it was confirmed that none of the libraries under review have been closed, that revised opening hours will come into effect from April and that libraries will continue to be staffed with volunteers providing additional support and activities. Thank you to all supporters and campaigners for saving the local libraries. Places are available in the Comberton Reading Group which meets in the Library on the first Wednesday each month. The next meeting is on Wednesday 4 January 2012 at 10:30am. This month the group read and discussed The northern clemency by Philip Hensher. The book for January is The Finkler Question by Howard Jacobson. For more information, speak to staff at Comberton library or contact the reading group librarian [email protected]

County Councillor’s Report

This new year starts on a good note for us locally with excellent news regarding two issues which have been concerning to residents – road safety and secondary school places.

Madingley Rise Safety Works starting soon - After a successful and very vocal safety campaign by local Councillors and residents the County Council’s Highways Department is due to start work on improving the safety of Madingley Rise in the next few months.

The work will need to be carried out in several phases because of County Council budget constraints but the money available for the first phase will see an improvement to the overtaking lane, and a longer approach to the turn offs at the crossroads for Madingley and Coton. The work is very overdue, but none the less very welcome – in particular because this is one of only two County accident reduction schemes to have been approved for this year. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to get this work carried out. Changes to admission numbers at Comberton Village College - When the new secondary school is opened in Cambourne in September 2013, Cambourne will then be removed from the Comberton Village College catchment area. Existing Cambourne children attending CVC will be entitled to remain until they finish year 11, but from 2013 new Cambourne pupils will not have an automatic right to a place at CVC. At the same time the CVC Pupil Admission Number is likely to be

reduced from 300 per year to 240. This will apply to year 7 to start with - with an ongoing reduction each September for the incoming year 7. Hopefully there will be correspondingly less traffic and congestion at the College when there are evening "events". Do you think has your car been damaged by the speed thumps in the village?

If you think your car has been damaged by the speed thumps in the Village please send details to the County's Insurance team via [email protected]. You should include details of the damage casued, how it was caused and any circumstances surrounding this. The County are currently denying liability, but they also say that they haven't had any claims submitted for some time.

The thumps are going - albeit taking some time to go! Now that we have had agreement that they can come out, the baton has passed to the Parish Council who are actively looking at a replacement scheme – the thumps removal will need a replacement scheme to ensure that the village doesn't become a rat run and that safety is maintained, especially outside the school. We'll continue to update as there is more news.

If you have any issues that I can help with please don’t hesitate to contact me:

By phone: 01954 212725 (h) and 07947 865490 (m) or by email [email protected] Fiona Whelan Hardwick Division County Councillor

Help Football Tackle a Problem Dog fouling is a regular problem for us because lots of people in the village use the playing fields to walk their dog, which in itself is not the issue. Although there are signs up by the pitches on match days, we still have to spend half an hour every time we use them, clearing up three to five pieces of dog poop before we can let the children on. We want to let dog owners know why they should start cleaning up. Perhaps they don't realise that we have over 60 children of all ages playing football on the Playing Fields, including children as young as 5 and 6, who could have their health affected. Dog faeces can carry harmful infections that can seriously affect humans, and may carry the eggs of a parasite that causes blindness in children. The best way to prevent disease from dog poop spreading is to clear it up quickly. The health risks are great, and it is against the law not to do this. We thank responsible dog owners for cleaning up and we will also ask the Parish Council to consider putting an extra bin at the entrance to the Playing Fields to help enforce this message, letting as many people as possible know of the environmental, health and legal issues surrounding dog fouling. Caldecote Football Club

Caldecote Playgroup Caldecote Playgroup will be holding an Indian evening on Tuesday 31st January at 8pm. There will be demonstrations of Indian cooking, Bollywood dancing and an optional fun dance class, as well as a chance to taste the food, drink some wine and bring home some recipes to try out on your family. Come and join us for a fantastic evening. Tickets are £7.50 and will be available from Monday 16th January. Contact Sarah Talmage on 01954 211252 or [email protected]. We will also be holding a toy sale towards the end of February so, if you are having a post-Christmas clear out, please bear us in mind. Donations can be given to Sarah Talmage any time from now – call or e-mail to arrange collection.

Churchwardens’ Corner First of all, a big thank you to all the organists who have been so kindly helping out with our services since August. We suddenly realised how short of them we were and several people have stepped into the breach and done an amazing job. Some can continue this year but for others life moves on and they will sadly be leaving Caldecote. As a result we will be needing some more people we can call on every now and then to help out. Caldecote has a beautiful Chamber Organ which does not have pedals – so it only

needs pianist not organ skills! Most people do not want regular/too many commitments so at present we are just looking for volunteers to play for us in services up to the end of May. Could you play for us for one or two Sundays, or do you know of someone who might? If so please could you contact Sheila. Even if you can’t play the organ, there are many ways to help out during and just before a service. If you attend St Michael’s and would be willing to help light candles, set up the altar, or welcome newcomers, just ask Dona how you can help. We understand if you don’t feel able to commit to a rota as such, but the more people that know their way around the pre-service arrangements the more enjoyable it is for us all to pitch in and learn together! After three months starting to learn the many ropes of church-wardening, we are also discovering and exploring all sorts of exciting possibilities for St Michaels in 2012. By the time you read this, the Diocesan Advisory Committee will have visited the Churchyard and, we hope, have officially agreed to the PCC continuing with the application for the installation of water inside the Church. When the water is finally achieved we will be able to provide refreshments after the services, and we will celebrate – watch this space! Also we are very aware that there are many parents with young children looking at what the Church can offer to families, and we are actively exploring these possibilities this year. There will be a coffee morning on March 12th from 10.30am -12.00am at 1 Porthmore Close Highfields when

anyone interested is welcome to drop in for a brainstorming session, and for us all to see what we can come up with. Please do come and offer your ideas....We really do need them. Mike Booker our Team Rector will be there to hear what you have to say! However if an evening is easier for you, Rosanna Mahmood will host a similar brainstorming meeting on the same day - March 12th between 8.00pm-9.00pm, which will be looking at the same ideas as the morning. This will take place at her house 81, Highfields Road, Caldecote, Tel.212543 and Mike Booker will kindly be there too! If you can’t make that date at either time, please contact Sheila below, or Rosanna, with any ideas or questions. We really do want to feel the Church is offering something positive for families and children. "Please do visit St. Michael's Church website at www.caldecotechurch.org.uk". Our very best wishes for 2012 Dona McCullagh, Sheila Stephenson I Porthmore Close, Highfields Caldecote, CB23 7ZR Telephone 01954 210638 Email: [email protected]

Caldecote, Hardwick and Dry Drayton Community Car Scheme Firstly can we wish all our drivers and passengers a very Happy New Year!

(It will be February when you read this - but it is written in early January!) As usual the scheme has been really busy! But thanks again to our co-ordinators and drivers we have not let anyone down yet! Somehow we have managed to fit everything together! If you have been to the surgeries recently you may have seen our smart new notices. The ones pinned to the notice board are primarily asking for drivers and on the tables there should be notices explaining the services to prospective new passengers and drivers! The ones on the tables seem to have been disappearing fast but we will try and keep them topped up! No guarantees of course! Again we need to repeat our appeal for more drivers! The demand for lifts is especially high in Hardwick. Our Caldecote and Dry Drayton drivers are very good at helping out, but, as often said, we do need more drivers, particularly from Hardwick itself. So if you see this article please do think if you can volunteer to help. All villages need extra drivers, but at the moment Hardwick especially, And the more we have the better it is for everyone. If you do feel you can volunteer, all it requires is signing up with Sheila in Caldecote, followed by a CRB check which Glenda can do. It is not a difficult or complicated process. One other thing the scheme would be grateful for, is, if people requesting lifts could give the co-ordinators ideally at least 48 hours notice for local surgery runs, and as long as possible for Hospital runs! Recently we have had several requests giving less than twenty four hours notice and

this has sometimes meant ringing our drivers late in the evening - which we don't like to do......Obviously we do understand emergencies and so far have managed to sort even those out. - But it would help everyone if the co-ordinators could be given as much notice as possible. Many thanks. Looking forward to hearing from prospective drivers...... Again All good wishes for the New Year. Sheila Stephenson

St Michael and All Angels Church Caldecote with Childerley From the Rector... February and March mark the time of year when Christians get serious. God’s all in favour of fun and feasting - Jesus spent quite a bit of his time eating and relaxing with people. But the Bible also records Jesus going without food, and encourages people to fast and pray. Lent - the six weeks leading up to Easter - is a time when many people give something up. That can have useful benefits, like losing weight if it’s chocolate we are saying goodbye to. Being a bit hungrier than usual, or missing our favourite luxury, can also do a remarkable job in jogging our memory, helping us to remember that we are taking things more seriously. We don’t actually need many of the things we get used to and rather enjoy. It’s good to remind ourselves of that, but the heart of the message of Lent is deeper still. It’s not about what we are giving up for God, but about what God gave up for us, as we begin to look towards Good Friday and the cross on which Jesus gave his life out of love for others. We need to take Lent seriously, as a reminder that God takes us seriously. And if Lent helps us in doing even a very slightly better job of remembering God, be encouraged - God never, ever, forgets us. Mike Booker

Hardwick & Caldecote Cricket Club The cricket club want to recruit adults and older youths to play in one of the three Saturday teams that will be running this year. If you are interested in playing then please contact Chris Fuller on 01954 211226. Games will be on Saturday afternoons from 1.30pm. Annual membership is only £5 with match fees paid if you play. Protective kit and bats are provided. Last season the club had a very good season winning the Cambridgeshire Cricket Association’s Senior division one. This means that they have been promoted to the Tucker division two. The newly promoted second team after a difficult start in division 4B, ended up mid table with some very big scores achieved by the team. The new ground at Caldecote is now ready to accommodate adult cricket and so a third team has been formed this year mainly as a development team to support the two other teams. So we do need new players to support this third team. There is also a mid week business team that plays from May to August which also is interested in attracting some more players to bolster the side. This team has been particularly successful as it is the holder of the Pye cup which it has won twice in three years. It still has to defend its title this year due to rained off matches from last year. The club is also looking to recruit young players into its teams for the coming year. If you are interested we
