Howdy, Rain has finally arrived in south Texas again and we are very thankful. Hopefully the weather is treating you well also.

2012 is promising to be a great year for the USTPA as we close our biggest show ever at the National Western Stock Show. Attracting nearly 1,100 teams, I hope this show is a predictor of our future events and the strengthening equine industry. Riders from as far as Canada participated and we even had riders from Italy who stopped by the show to learn more about the USTPA. But the show didn’t just set participation records; it also allowed us to highlight the top performers in our sports to the crowds at the stock show. The exciting rides of the final ten teams in the #11 Pro/Am/Novice Penning and the Open Handicap Penning kept the crowd at the PBR performances entertained and introduced a whole new audience of rodeo fans to our sports. What a great start for the 2012 year!

Another success this year has been our new membership campaign. We have had several new members join the Association and old friends have returned. Remember to tell anyone who has not been an active member for the last three years that they can apply for a full refund of their membership fee if they attend one National Production or Sanctioned show.

Now for the news many of you have been waiting for, the Board of Directors has voted to move the USTPA 2012 Wrangler World Championship to the heart of cowboy country in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Scheduled for November 12 through November 17, 2012, the show will be held at the historic Hardy Murphy Coliseum (www.HardyMurphyColiseum.com) in Ardmore. Situated just north of the Texas border, right off I-35 and less than 2 hours from the historic stockyard districts of Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, Ardmore offers plenty of nice restaurants and entertainment options for the entire family. Locally you are minutes from beautiful Lake Murray, the Arbuckle Mountains, and the Chickasaw National Recreation area. If you are a gambler, and we all know Team Penners might take a risk, one of the largest casinos in the area, the WinStar, is only 35 minutes south on I-35. The town has many nice hotels, the facility offers RV camping and the local airport is within walking distance of the show grounds. So no matter what your taste Ardmore has a lot to offer. And if all that isn’t enough, an estimated $275,000 in added money and prizes might stimulate some of you to get qualified!

I truly hope to see all of you at a USTPA event soon and remember, it’s not about the wins you take, it’s about the friends you make.

Remembering “Bubba” by Sonya Buckner

My mother found Bubba in March of 1994 at the NCHA Area work offs in Jackson, Mississippi. She was actually looking at him for a friend of ours but when I saw him I had to have him. It took my mom 4 years to get papers on him because the gentleman we bought him from did not even own him. He was my first competitive horse (hauling up and down the road). In his prime I was offered lots of money, trucks, and a corvette for him but I would never let him go. He actually taught me how to read a cow. He was not that fast so I had to learn how to work angles with him instead of us-ing speed to out run the cattle.

After I had Shiann I decided he was the one for her. They just took up with each other both just a little aggravating at times. She started riding him around 2 years old; and he would not even walk for her unless I walked with him. When she was around 3 he finally started to trot with her on a limited basis. At about 4 years old she figured out how to pick the strings up on the back of her saddle to whip him and

he started loping a couple of feet. Their first show was in Batesville, Mississippi July 2011 at Brian’s DRTPA show; and they competed in the junior youth penning class. When Shiann turned Bubba to come up the hole he loped a little too fast so she changed horses but that was the last time. From that point on if you saw Shiann competing it was on Bubba. The very next weekend they made their first USTPA national production show appearance in Tunica, Mississippi. In September 2011, they won their first and last buckle together. They placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Junior youth penning class at the DRTPA finals in Forest, Mississippi. At that same show they almost won the Senior youth penning class. I decided they were doing so good together that she should go to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado where USTPA puts on a national production show. There they competed in the Junior and Senior youth team penning classes and also in the Junior youth ranch sorting class on January 8, 2012. They tried

very hard but did not walk away with any buckles.

On January 11 he was left at a barn,

in a panel stall by himself where something came into the barn, attacked, and killed him. Here is where the guilt lies on me. Typi-cally I would never let Shiann miss 5 days of school to go to a team penning or ranch sort-ing because I want her to know that school is important. I let her go this time because I thought if she started going to things like this at a young age then she would not be ner-vous the older she gets. Also, if I were not such a cheap person I would have paid for stalls at the facility instead of staying with friends. So for these things I am so sorry to Bubba that I did not protect him. As an ani-mal owner we are 100% responsible for the health and well being of our animals because we have domesticated them and made them somewhat defenseless. I am so grateful that God put him in our lives, I just wish I could have done something for him when he needed me the most. I will never be able to replace him. He taught Shiann and me so much but he had so much more to teach her. What most people do not understand about Bubba is that he was really not a kid’s horse; he just put up with a lot. In February 2011, I had to use him at a DRTPA show in Unadil-la, Georgia during the 9 penning class which we won. So for him to then turn around and let a 4 year old at the time ride him says a lot about what kind of mind he had. I will forever miss and Love him. Thank you so very much BUBBA

When most six year old little girls were at home playing with their tea sets, Hannah Rainey was discovering a world that would change her life forever. “I got started in team penning when my Dad’s friend heard about the sport, and we decided to give it a try. We didn’t have any neck or back numbers, so we just tied colored tags around the cow’s tails to distinguish the trios from each other,” she says with a laugh. Eighteen

years later, Hannah has come a long way

since then, and she is now considered a top contender at all of the USTPA

events that she attends. In fact, she just returned home from one of her favorite events of the year, the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. “Denver isn’t just a show,” Hannah says as she recalls the thrill of being able to ride during the PBR evening performance. “I made it to the finals both nights and ended up winning the #11 Pro/Am/Novice Penning, which was definitely a thrill.” Hannah encourages

anyone who has never been to this

particular show to attend next year. “The lights, lasers, and ultimately, just the show itself, is spectacular.”

While Hannah doesn’t have any immediate thoughts of training horses

full time, she does enjoy buying younger prospects and bringing them along. “I look for horses that have a big heart and will do anything you ask them to do, when you ask it,” she says. Her current favorite mount is Doc, an eleven year old sorrel AQHA gelding, who she lovingly describes as being totally fearless. “You never have to ask Doc twice, and he always gets the job done,” Hannah says with

obvious pride. Hannah

currently has six horses that are shared between her and her Dad. “Horses are really a family event for us,” says Hannah. Even though her Mom has quit riding, she definitely keeps busy behind the scenes and fully supports her family. Hannah’s Dad is a former USTPA President, and Hannah jokes about how he

“kicked her butt” at last years World Show by earning the High Point Rider for the Show. “I’ll definitely be back next year though,” Hannah states. “Everyone that you see throughout the year is there, and it’s so much fun to catch up and socialize; as well as get the opportunity to ride with and compete against the best in the industry.”

Hannah, a recent graduate from Mississippi State, is now working full time in her family’s sod business. Due to her work schedule, she doesn’t get to go to events every single weekend, but enjoys every minute when she does. “I love traveling to the shows and getting to meet new people,” Hannah says about the USTPA. “I wouldn’t consider myself a road hand, but I’ve been doing it just as long as most,” she says. The main thing Hannah recommends to others who are just getting started is,

“Don’t give up! You have just as much a shot to win that day as the person who travels and competes every weekend. If you practice hard at home, then you just have to ‘bring it when it counts’.” When asked which discipline she enjoys the most - team penning or sorting - she takes a little time to decide, but ultimately decides on sorting. “Sorting allows you to show

more of your horse’s ability since it is performed in such close quarters. There’s more room to allow for mistakes in the open arena of team penning,” she says.

Even though

Hannah is concentrating on other things at the moment, she says that she would like to run for a Director’s office with the USTPA sometime in the future. She feels that it is important to give back to the association that has helped her so much throughout the years. Currently, Hannah enjoys helping

the USTPA youth by mentoring them at events and providing coaching as needed. “I love the sensation of watching them win, and feeling that I helped them get to that point. Their success means just as much, if not more, than my own,” Hannah states. “Horses teach such responsibility, and I believe that is an important lesson to future generations.” Hannah also credits the horses for helping her learn the importance

of time management. She added, “When I was in college, I had to balance everything and figure out how to get it all done before I could leave to go to a show. It definitely helped shape me into the person I am today.” According to Hannah, she plans to keep penning and sorting for many more years to come. “I enjoy being with my parents and having the opportunity to spend time with them. So, as long as they want to go, it will definitely be a family affair.” Hannah wishes to give a special thanks to her parents for introducing her to the sport, and for standing beside her through the years. “If it wasn't for them, none of my accomplishments would have been possible.”

The International Sport of Team Penning By Larry Kuyper

Team penning expands around the world, as aptly demonstrated on the edge of the Andes Mountains at San Cristobal, Venezuela in January, 2012. The San Cristobal Festival, a three week event, was prepared to run the largest team penning in Venezuela with 132 teams, each running four times over three days. To determine the semi final contestants, the team's three fastest times and cattle were added together, dropping the fourth run. The top 60 teams returned to the arena one more time to determine the top 20 finalists

ASOGATA, the cattlemen's asso-ciation in Venezuela, was the promoter with ASOWEST, the western sports organization which includes team penning, providing the rules, judges and office administration. With 500 active members, ASOWEST continues to modify and enhance the sport. In 2009, John May, USTPA past officer, through a chance meeting with Emilio

Llamozas at the AQHA World Show, received an invitation

to Venezuela where he con-ducted the first Judges' seminar

and USTPA sanctioned shows. Since that time, many cutting bred

horses have been imported with over 95% of the horses at the show having been imported from the USA. All had earned money in cutting or working cow horse before migrating to the team penning arena.

I was invited, as USTPA's Inter-national Liaison, to help strengthen our team penning ties. Emilio Llamo-zas, again played an influential role, with the invitation coming from Luis Hernandez, President of ASOGATA. Interviews of myself occurred with Venezuela radio, TV, and news-papers with USTPA being predominantly displayed as the inter-national partner in this event. The result was the grandstand teem-ing with over 12,000 people in attendance.

My hosts dur-ing my visit were Senor Luis Her-nandez, President of ASOGATA,

his daughter and Show Secretary, Veronica, Raphael Suarez, Officer and Judge within ASOWEST, and his 14 year old son, Juan, who seemed to be my personal interpreter. My impor-tant guide and competitor, Marcos Chocron, who met me at the Caracas airport at 10:00PM, escorted me to my hotel, and at 4:30AM the next morn-ing flew with me to San Cristobal, was a pleasure to be around. Marcos then insured, once in San Cristobal, that my travels from the airport to the hotel and to the Festival all occurred with-out any problems.

The show started with opening com-ments from Luis Hernandez, followed by myself, USTPA Representative

USTPA's desire to work with other countries to expand team penning. A singer then sang a rous-ing song of the highs and lows of team penning. (I'm still trying to secure the English translation.)

Each team wore the same color shirts with the same insignias. It was not unusual to see

riders walking around with two or three shirts to change into depending on which team was entering the arena. Teams could enter twice with the same riders, but thereafter had to change one rider.

The 125 x 300 foot outdoor arena, set in the center of San Cristobal with a soccer stadium, in one direction, a basketball stadium in another and the An-

des as a backdrop created a mag-nificent scene! The 396 Bos Indicus (Brahma) bulls, weighing approxi-mately 900 pounds, split into 12 herds of 33 bulls apiece, challenged the cowboys throughout the first day with 43 teams finding the 90 second clock not long enough to obtain a successful time. (The 11th "number" in the herd was X) Most of the successful teams penned in 50 seconds or longer with the fastest time being 39 seconds.

The second day started with 75 de-gree weather and 132 teams optimisti-cally ready to test their luck and skill. They were undaunted knowing that they all had three more runs to secure a place in the semi finals, no matter what happened with the first run. The riders continued to face bulls that were unhappy about being moved around by horses, with some of the bulls turn-ing and charging the horses. Many

"no times" again occurred, but several teams found lady luck and reached the mid 20's on three head.

As the third go started the majority of the teams were still in the hunt for the $10,000 US first place prize since they knew one of their four runs, the worst, could be dropped. The com-plexion of the cattle also changed since new bulls were brought in for the

third and final day of the Festi-val, which again start-ed with 70 degree weather. High hopes for secur-ing pay

checks, buckles and trophies that went with making the top 20 still abounded.

The show was electrified by an excited crowd of 12,000 people who wanted to be heard. This was comple-mented by loud music between runs and cattle changes, resulting in people dancing at the edges of the arena. With the facility being located in the middle of a large beautiful city, many in the audience had never seen penning or understood the rules. The help from the crowd was loud in spotting cattle, letting riders know when cattle were coming back, or just the tremendous moves by the horses, riders and bulls. The bulls frequently tried to jump

out of the four foot brick lined arena topped with heavy railings. The people hanging on the railing quickly re-treated as 900 pound projectiles came hurdling after them in their attempt to escape. The noise was enhanced by continuous bands playing on the run-ways outside the venue and sometimes roars from the people watching the Cola, the flipping of 900 pound bulls by grabbing their tails from horseback and running past them to have the bull go head over apple cart, all within 2000 feet of the team penning arena.

The winners were recognized about midnight on Sunday evening with a presentation in the center of the arena. Senor Hernandez, Senor Suarez and myself, in short speeches, compli-mented the competitors and their suc-cess over the last three days. Each of the three riders on the Champion and

Reserve Champion Teams spoke over the PA system after receiving their awards. They spoke to the excitement of the competition, the enjoyment of the family, the cama-raderie that comes from team penning and the support of ASOGATA, ASOW-EST and USTPA. At the conclusion of the presentations,

a band started playing with people singing and dancing in the stadium, while fireworks were going off in the background. The team penners and their families were still going strong when I left for the hotel at 3:00AM. I believe many of them saw the sun rise over the stadium on Monday morning.

My overall impression of my four days in Venezuela is peoples' love of team penning knows no geographical boundaries. Like USTPA, ASOW-EST is composed of a strong group of dedicated core leaders that are focused on growing team penning into a true international sport like cutting and

reining. I learned that team penning is also active in Columbia, Brazil, Panama, Dominican Republic, as well as countries with which I have already been communicating, being South Africa, Czech Republic, Austria and Italy.

The bigger Brahma bulls, with a 40% foul line, crowds hanging over the fence swinging shirts, hats and umbrellas would create a challenge for the most

seasoned USTPA competitor, so I tip my hat to the Ven-ezuelan riders. I believe that Venezuela might be the first country that has "instant re-play" to review competitors'

concerns. Every run is videoed while a sepa-rate camera located at the foul line captures any infractions. At the end of the arena, the run is simulta-neously projected on a screen for the audience.

As I left Venezuela, I was already anticipating the next time I would meet my new friends, many who have not been named in this article,

but who enhanced my understand-ing of team penning in their country. Later this year, I will be returning to Venezuela to conduct a judges/officials clinic and see many of these folks. In

the near term, the plan is that 50-60 Venezuelan rid-ers and families will be coming to the Houston Livestock Show to compete. Best of luck to each and every one of them. May our USTPA family be as gracious and considerate to them as they were to me.

As I write this column, the Rose Bowl Parade has just concluded. As most who watched were amazed by the RFD-TV float and tribute to Roy Rogers’ 100th birthday, I was compelled to write from his “Rider’s Rules” and how they relate not only to our Founding Fathers but our Heavenly Father’s admonitions.

Rider's Rules By Roy Rogers

1. Be neat and clean.

2. Be courteous and polite.

3. Always obey your parents.

4. Protect the weak and help them.

5. Be brave but never take chances.

6. Study hard and learn all you can.

7. Be kind to animals and take care of them.

8. Eat all your food and never waste any.

9. Love God and go to Sunday school regularly.

10. Always respect our flag and our country.

Can you even begin to imagine what our world (or at least the United States) would be like if everyone or the vast majority of the people observed those ten rules of Roy Rogers? Some of them may look familiar to you if you know the Ten Commandments but in a different order. Jesus was asked by a lawyer which is the great commandment in the law? “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’” (Matthew 22:37-40) I’m sure Roy Rogers must have had those verses on his mind when he came up with some of his rules.

The Founding Fathers of our country were well aware of the importance of honoring God and allowing Him to direct them in their decisions. Just a few quotes from those men will illustrate my point. Noah Webster “The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all of our civil constitutions and laws….All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.” Noah Webster even gave advice for how to select individuals for public office. He said:

“In selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect [party] of the candidate

– look to his character….It is alleged by men of loose principles or defective views of the subject that religion and morality are not necessary or important qualifications for political stations. But the Scriptures teach a different doctrine. They direct that rulers should be men “who rule in the fear of God, able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness.”

You see the Founding Fathers firmly believed that nations couldn’t be punished in the afterlife for not following the Creator but would be punished in this life. Therefore, it was imperative to select righteous, God-fearing individuals. If those individuals were in office, they would make good and righteous laws. They knew this great experiment of a Republic wherein the citizens made the decisions (self-government) could not last for long unless moral and religious people were at the helm.

John Adams said “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

I close with a prayer written by Roy Rogers.

Lord, I reckon I'm not much just by myself, I fail to do a lot of things I ought to do. But Lord, when trails are steep and passes high, Help me ride it straight the whole way through. And when in the falling dusk I get that final call, I do not care how many flowers they send, Above all else, the happiest trail would be, For YOU to say to me, "Let's ride, My Friend." Roy Rogers

May you be richly blessed as you ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and help you with the great rules of life – The Ten Commandments and Roy Rogers’ Rules. None of us is perfect and we will fail many times, but we can pick ourselves up each day with the desire to succeed and become better today than we were yesterday until the Lord calls us Home.
