Wallace And Gromit's World Of Invention: Reach For The Sky

Sunday, 23 January 2011

In this second episode see Wallace and Gromit explore the mysteries behind man’s fascination with flight, from homemade space rockets in Manchester to jetpacks and planes that don’t fly in our ‘contraption countdown’.

On location in the USA, we explore the most advanced flexible spacesuits being developed by NASA that are designed to allow wearers to perform cartwheels on Mars, wouldn’t that be fun! And in Germany we look at the life of Gustav Mesmer, a man obsessed with flight, but whose inner inventor was locked inside his own imagination for years and who finally got to realise his dreams on a bicycle with wings.

Finally Jem Stansfield travels to California to investigate the theory behind air movement which gave lift to the eerie-looking Magnus Spherical Airship.

South Pacific: Ocean Of Volcanoes

Sunday, 23 January 2011

Witness the birth, growth and death of an island in the greatest ocean on Earth. Millions of years are condensed into an hour, revealing unforgettable images of an erupting underwater volcano, rivers of lava exploding below the waves, and roads and houses buried by molten rivers of rock.

From these violent beginnings emerge coral reefs of unparalleled richness, supporting large groups of grey reef sharks and giant manta rays. The rising lands of the South Pacific have also given life to some very strange creatures, from the vampire bug that thrives in tropical snow to the magapode (a bird that uses volcanic springs to incubate its eggs) and vast swarms of jellyfish trapped forever by a coral mountain.

Bran Nue Dae

Sunday, 23 January 2011

It’s the summer of 1969 in Broome, an idyllic pearling port on Australia’s west coast, and shy Aboriginal teenager Willie (Rocky McKenzie) reluctantly finds himself on his way back to Catholic boarding school in Perth before he gets to date the girl of his dreams, local church singer, the beautiful Rosie (Jessica Mauboy). Willie’s devoted mother, single parent Theresa (Ningali Lawford-Wolf) hopes that one day he’ll become a priest.

But it’s not long before life at boarding school under the strict and sometimes cruel rule of Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush) becomes unbearable, and Willie makes his bolt for freedom. Alone in the city, he is befriended by the roguish ‘Uncle Tadpole’ (Ernie Dingo) who, it turns out, is also from Broome, and promises to help Willie get back home. But not before he’s been to the pub of course. Eventually they hitch a lift in a Kombi van with a couple of hippies – loved-up Annie (Missy Higgins) and uptight German tourist ‘Slippery’ (Tom Budge). They head off on the 2,500 km journey with ‘Tadpole’ spinning clichéd Aboriginal tales to an enraptured Annie and Slippery wondering how far away Broome actually is. Willie has an uneasy feeling it’s going to be a bumpy ride...not to mention what his Mum is going to do to him when he gets home.

Meanwhile, Father Benedictus has hit the road determined to find Willie and make him fulfil his destiny; and in Broome, Rosie has started singing with the pub band whose lead singer, handsome bad boy Lester (Dan Sultan), has his eye on her.

‘Tadpole’ robs a petrol station run by man-eater ‘Roadhouse Betty’ (Magda Szubanski) causing them to make a running getaway, and ‘Slippery’ turfs the hitchers out. Willie hitches a ride with a truck full of Zorba-dancing football-playing boys and finds himself offloaded in the rough mining town of Port Hedland where he catches the attentions of local good-time girl, Roxanne (Deborah Mailman).

Willie is rescued in the nick of time by his Kombi companions but the Kombi is pulled over by the cops, and they spend the night in jail. Willie has a disturbing dream and worries that he can’t go back home, but ‘Tadpole’ decides to take responsibility and promises Willie that he will get him home.

Willie arrives in Broome with no idea if Rosie will still be there or what his mother will do, but little does he know that the day ahead will be full of surprises - for everyone.

The Story Of Bran Nue Dae

Sunday, 23 January 2011 Repeat

The Story of Bran Nue Dae gives the background to the making of the feature musical Bran Nue Dae. It tells how this crazy madcap story was based on a stage play by Broome writer and musician Jimmy Chi and his band Kuckles, and how the stage play was based on the experiences of these artists, growing up in the 60s in the multi-cultural pearling town of Broome in the far north of Western Australia.

Director Adrian Wills says, “I always felt that there was going to be something special happening around the set of the Bran Nue Dae film. It had a great cast, a world class crew, and the story is about us, Australians – a story that embodies warmth, heart and spirit, and puts Australia on the big screen as we have never seen it before.

“But while the Bran Nue Dae story might seem like a pretty crazy one, it came straight from the lives and the experiences of its originators. This is the story that I wanted to tell in my documentary, the story of where Bran Nue Dae came from. It is a rich, community owned story that contains fragments of many people’s lives. It is at once Jimmy Chi’s story, the story of his fellow band members in his band Kuckles, and the story of the Broome community and the incredible cultural diversity that came with Broome’s pearling heritage. I’d never before met blackfellas who ate chilli and rice with their bush tucker, who know how to dry fish and make blachan, and who spoke their lingo with a smattering of Indonesian and Chinese.

“It wasn’t all easy. In Sun Pictures in Broome’s Chinatown, where Jimmy Chi and his mates watched Oklahoma and My Fair Lady and West Side Story in the 60s, there are photos on the wall that show the racial divisions of the town - the Aboriginal kids in the front, the Asian pearl divers behind, and the town’s small white population sitting in cane armchairs up the back. But despite the racial values of the times and the best efforts of Church and State, Broome turned into a living embodiment of a truly global world. Literally! Look at Jimmy Chi, who identifies as a Bardi man but is also part Chinese, part Japanese, and part Scottish.

“So for me, Broome, and its pre-eminent story Bran Nue Dae, has an important message for us about multiculturalism and the value of tolerance, about accepting the realities of our history - of who we REALLY are as Australians.”

Grumpy Guide To...: Money

Monday, 24 January 2011

If there’s a word that Grumpies can’t stand it’s ‘bling’ - all those people in diamonds and silly fast cars showing off. And what about those city boys in their stripy jackets yakking on about pork bellies and writing off your pension funds. And don’t get Grumpies going on banks. Why does it still take 3 days to put money into your account but you can’t speak to a bank manager anymore? The lid is lifted on the baffling world of finance, with a few tips on how to get your own back on those wicked credit card companies on the way.

Gandhi: The Rise To Fame

Monday, 24 January 2011

This is the first definitive series on the life of Gandhi, examining his relationship with his wife, his controversial views on race and his role on the path to Indian independence.

On the world stage, Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama and a myriad of peace movements have marched in Gandhi’s footsteps. But while he remains, unquestionably, India’s revered father, the ‘Father of a Nation’, there is another and less well known side to him. This series charts Gandhi’s Establishment beginnings, his move into politics and his campaign to bring independence to India.

At 18, Gandhi was sent from India to London to train as a barrister. Whilst in London he began to dabble in religion and pacifist philosophies. However, it was not until he moved to South Africa that he really began to put the philosophies into practice. On his first journey to Pretoria, he was shocked at the racism experienced, both by himself, and his fellow countrymen. It was here that he began a 21-year campaign for Indian rights in South Africa.

Through the survivors, and descendants of South African Indians who knew Gandhi, we discover how his non-violent protests helped influence the anti-apartheid movements. However, he has another legacy that has not been forgotten by the black South Africans. While fighting for equal rights for the Indians in South Africa, he discriminated against the blacks – seeking preferential treatment for Indians over them.

In episode two, Mishal Husain traces Gandhi’s transformation from obscure lawyer to ‘Father Of The Nation’ and discovers a more complicated and intriguing man than the saintly Hollywood version. Gandhi had to face unpopularity, political failure and British jails. But in 1930, he triumphs, launching the most astute campaign of the age: the 240-mile Salt March that succeeded in humiliating the British Raj.

Do Gandhi’s early views corrode his legacy or do they simply serve as a reminder that this ‘modern day prophet’ was, in fact, a product of his time?

Return To Lake Eyre: The Deluge

Monday, 24 January 2011

The bigger the drought, the bigger the flood. That certainly held true over the past year for the eastern half of Australia, with flooding rains ending the worst drought in history.

The signs that the weather was turning began in 2009, when a deluge in the tropical north set the great desert rivers flowing through Central Australia. For the first time in years, the water flowed all the way to Lake Eyre, the huge salt pan in the dead heart of the continent.

ABC TV reporter Paul Lockyer covered the drought in 2009, and now returns to Lake Eyre 12 months later to investigate the floods sweeping across much of south west Queensland.

The deluge was delivered by a series of tropical lows which swept through the middle of Australia.

Nothing Rhymes With Ngapartji

Monday, 24 January 2011

Follows the journey of acclaimed Pitjantjatjara actor, Trevor Jamieson, as he returns to his traditional country to perform his hit stage show – Ngapartji Ngapartji – to an all-Indigenous audience, in the remote Aboriginal community of Ernabella, South Australia.

Trevor has struggled to hold onto language and culture while living away from his traditional country.

Ngapartji Ngapartji is a live theatre performance in two languages. But usually the audience is fluent in English, not Pitjantjatjara. Trevor is preparing to face his toughest audience yet, 2500km from the recent sell-out Sydney Festival season, against the magnificent backdrop of Australia's central desert.

The film follows the Ngapartji Ngapartji team’s journey to Ernabella and performance of their acclaimed show. It is terrible timing for Trevor, whose father, a central character in the stage show, passed away only weeks before. Not only does Trevor have to confront his grief in order to deliver the performance, in doing so he has to grapple with the decision to risk breaking traditional law by saying his father’s name, acting the part of him, and showing footage of him as part of the show.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:This film has been co-produced by ABC TV and big hART co. Directed by Suzy Bates.

The Bionic Vet

Thursday, 27 January 2011

In the fast-paced world of The Bionic Vet there are many bittersweet moments.

Firstly, Ice, a six-month-old puppy has been rushed to The Bionic Vet’s (Noel Fitzpatrick) multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facility in Surrey, England, with a crushed front leg.

A horse trampled on Ice and the bones in his leg have been shattered into 20 or more pieces.

As Noel tries to reconstruct the leg, his team battle an infection caused by the horse’s hoof and fear Ice may have internal injuries.

After a tense round of tests they are relieved to learn Ice’s only injury is to his severely shattered leg.

The bad news is the leg will require complex surgery and the owner is leaning towards euthanasia.

Meanwhile, there are concerns for Neo, a four-year-old Springer Spaniel airport sniffer dog. Neo isn’t like most sniffer dogs as he sniffs for money!

He’s been compensating for a serious knee problem in one of his back legs and requires significant surgery if he’s going to be able to re-join his handler.

The Bionic Vet also catches up with Lottie, the cat whose pelvis was shattered in a road accident. Noel reassembled the pelvis using a series of pins and a metal frame.

Lottie’s been making good progress but now it’s time to find out how she’ll take her first session in the centre’s hydrotherapy pool.

And in a comedic breather about Noel’s office/bedroom, his office has been cleaned which he is grateful for – but the clutter has been dumped into his bedroom!

Ashes To Ashes

Thursday, 27 January 2011

It's the run up to the 1983 General Election and pressure is mounting on DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) and his team when they investigate a series of politically motivated arson attacks.

A fire at an Army barracks is soon followed by another more serious blaze at a polling station. As CID arrive to investigate, a quiet word from DCI Jim Keats (Daniel Mays) in DI Ray Carling's (Dean Andrews) ear leads to the detective risking his life by running into the burning building to save a cleaner who is trapped.

However, Ray's heroic intentions are short-lived as he is soon trapped, too. Fireman Andy Smith saves the pair and the usually macho Ray is overcome with gratitude.

As the arson investigation continues, Ray is devastated when an eye-witness identifies Andy as their prime suspect. The team working on the case discovers that Andy is an Army veteran who served in the Falklands; a war that changed him beyond recognition. However, when another fire starts while Andy is still in police custody, Gene has no choice but to let him go - despite not being 100 percent convinced of his innocence.

Meanwhile, DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) is still being haunted by the police officer with the 6-6-20 epaulette numbers and is struggling to work out why he keeps visiting her.

Chopper Rescue

Friday, 28 January 2011

From the ocean to the outback, helicopter rescue crews save lives and face near death challenges every day. Chopper Rescue follows the work of the doctors, paramedics, rescue officers and aircrews who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They cover huge distances across Queensland, from the remote outback and tropics to the outermost limits of The Great Barrier Reef.

Working in difficult remote locations and in cramped conditions in mid air, the doctors and paramedics safely deliver patients to hospital and along the way deliver hospital standard care.

Chopper Rescue is genuine life and death human drama.

This week the Chopper Rescue team attend two emergencies.

A bad accident on an outback cattle property tests everyone on Rescue 521 from Townsville. A man has fallen from a moving vehicle and is reported to have severe head and chest injuries.

And on the Great Barrier Reef an English tourist with crushing chest pains gets a rapid response from the crew of Rescue 510.

Murderland

Friday, 28 January 2011

Murderland is a British thriller – set in 1994 and the present day - that tells the story of a murder through the eyes of three central characters:

Carrie (Bel Powley), the young daughter of the murdered woman, whose life has been changed forever and whose memories may hold the key to the killer’s identity. And her adult self, Carol (Amanda Hale), a woman determined to find out who her mother really was and why she was killed.

DI Gordon Hain (Robbie Coltrane), the detective in charge of the investigation, who was involved with the case more than he can reveal to anyone. Like Carrie, Hain is haunted by the murder so when adult Carol turns up on his doorstep he feels forced to help her, regardless of the cost and his own motives.

Sally (Lucy Cohu), the murder victim whose hopes and dreams of carving out a better life for herself and her daughter are destroyed one fateful night. And whose life – and death – are pieced together through flashback from different perspectives, unravelling the truth about her and why she was murdered.

Still haunted by her mother’s murder, Carol cannot move on with her life from the terrible unexplained events that occurred when she was a child until she uncovers the truth about her mother’s life and death.

Murderland is a story of revenge, redemption and rough justice, where three different perspectives eventually piece together the truth. As the investigation unfolds, Carol’s yearning to discover who murdered her mother becomes obsessive bringing her closer to Gordon Hain.

In the end Carol holds the key to the killer and in doing so puts her own life in danger.
