Restoration Home: Pitkennedy School

Sunday, 27 April 2014

Best friends, Charlotte and Helen, always dreamed of saving a neglected building steeped in history, and they certainly found one. Sitting on a windswept hill in rolling farmland, Pitkennedy School in Angus, Scotland, was once the cornerstone of a community. Generation after generation were educated within the old walls during its 150 year history until the school bell rang for the final time in 2005.

As work begins, locals start to take notice of the school once again, while within the archives, voices of the first children and teachers start to be heard. A picture of rural 19th century life emerges as we discover that an act of generosity by a wealthy benefactor was where it all began.

Meanwhile, further research places this tiny school at the beginning of a revolution in education and school building that would change Britain forever. The new owners still face their biggest challenge - can these novice renovators create a beautiful home from a neglected old Victorian school?

Parer's War

Sunday, 27 April 2014

It's 1942 - Darwin has been bombed and 29-year-old, war time cinematographer Damien Parer (Matt Le Nevez), is filming Australian troops as they fight the Japanese on the deadly razorback ridges of New Guinea.

Risking his own life, Damien is determined to make the film that will shake Australians out of their complacency and let them know that the war is on their doorstep.

While away, his thoughts frequently stray to his beautiful, strong-willed and feisty, long-time girlfriend Marie Cotter (Adelaide Clemens). He knows that he has been keeping her at arm's length - terrified that he will come home maimed and broken - unsure of his own feelings and unable to commit.

Returning home to Sydney, Damien's film is released, Kokoda Front Line! It's a triumph and a bona fide hit, with crowds lining up at the theatres to see it. The film, produced by legendary Cinesound producer Ken Hall (Rob Carlton), is the first Australian film to win an Oscar.

But when Damien learns that one of his images has been improperly released to the papers, potentially endangering the lives of the troops, it sets him at loggerheads with his boss at the Department of Information, the officious Bob Hawes (Nicholas Bell). Meanwhile his relationship with Marie doesn't fare any better when he instigates a self-destructive fight with her.

When Damien returns to New Guinea, he has another film in mind - to record the real life of a solider - the truth about war in all its shocking, intimate and frightening reality. Amidst the turmoil his camera is broken. His shield is gone. Damien vows to return to find Marie.

Based on the lives of real people and actual events, Parer's War tells the story of a man caught between two worlds and battling with his emotions - at ease amongst the troops and in the midst of jungle warfare, but struggling to connect at home and to win the love of his life.

QI: Kit & Kaboodle

Wednesday, 30 April 2014

QI, the world's most interesting quiz show, is back in this brand new series. Stephen Fry hosts the quiz with a difference, looking at a whole 'Kit & Kaboodle' of K topics, with points being awarded for the most interesting answers as well as correct ones. Panellists include Noel Fielding from The Mighty Bosh, stand-up comedian Ross Noble, Australian comedian Colin Lane and comedian, actor and writer Alan Davies. Stephen Fry wants to know if there is a use for kitty-litter that does not involve cats. But will the fact that Alan Davies once weed into kitty-litter during an episode of Jonathon Creek win the QI regular some much needed points?

The Agony Of Modern Manners: Dining

Wednesday, 30 April 2014

"My wife licks the knife, I hate it!..." Tim Ross

"I love hearing about sex... it's endlessly fascinating..." Yumi Stynes

The Aunts and Uncles discuss the range of dining misdemenours at restaurants, including diners who reach across the table, pick their teeth in full view of everyone and talk with their mouth full. And what about phones - where should they be kept during a meal, are they able to be brought out to check football scores, settle arguments, and should they really be answered unless it's an emergency?

How much should you tip? Is it fine to photograph food? If so, should we take multiple shots, use a flash, and photograph each other's food? And lastly, what conversations should be avoided, how do we not make a production out of tasting wine and is it important not to get so sloshed that you rest your head on the table?

Call The Midwife

Thursday, 1 May 2014

Jenny (Jessica Raine) is delighted to be promoted to acting sister on clinic days, but she soon finds herself dealing with her most challenging case yet.

Mrs Aston (Seline Hizli), a local hairdresser, is only days away from giving birth but she doesn't show any signs of slowing down, much to Jenny's concern. When Mrs Aston confesses to Jenny and Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) that the baby she's carrying isn't her husband’s, but that of a coloured man, they endeavour to help her. Mr Aston (Ben Bishop) is a man known for his temper, there's no telling what he would do if he found out.

Inspired by a lecture given by a visiting academic, Dr Latham (Roger Merlidge), Nurse Cynthia Miller (Bryony Hannah) spearheads a new birthing practice for the expectant mothers of Poplar. In particular, she's hoping her new knowledge will help a very anxious mother-to-be Mrs Short (Faye Daveney).

As her labour drags on, Mrs Short is encouraged to breathe and relax as much as possible by Nurse Miller while Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris) insists she needs to be rushed to the mothers’ home immediately. But Nurse Miller sticks to her instincts and takes control of the situation.

Meanwhile Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates) puts her green-fingered skills to good use and Chummy (Miranda Hart) continues to juggle her work and home life.

The Gods Of Wheat Street: Nobody Lives Forever

Saturday, 3 May 2014

An intimate journey into the lives, hearts and humour of the Freeburns - a modern Aboriginal family of local legends - The GODS of Wheat Street is about letting go of the past, with the aid of a little magic and enough deadpan humour to tackle the future.

During the six-part series, we follow the trials and tribulations of Odin Freeburn and his family as they rise above obstacles that would bring mere mortals to their knees - and get on with the important matters of love, family and football.

The GODS of Wheat Street boasts a cast of some of Australia's finest Indigenous actors including Kelton Pell as Odin Freeburn, Ursula Yovich as Eden Freeburn, Lisa Flanagan as Libby Lavelle, Logie Award-winning Shari Sebbens as Isolde Freeburn, Bruce Carter as Ares Freeburn, Mark Coles Smith as Tristan Freeburn, Rarriwuy Hick as Electra Freeburn and Miah Madden as Athena Freeburn.

Libby, sick of not being appreciated, decides to let the Freeburns fend for themselves - that is until Athena turns up on her doorstep looking for her school uniform. When Libby confronts Odin about taking her for granted, he takes her by surprise in a moment of romantic inspiration.

Meanwhile, Jonesy breaks into the Freeburn's house in search of his stolen money and Tristan tries to win back Anastasia. When Tristan blurts out that Ares had an affair with her mother, Anastasia accuses him of being a lair. Angry and upset, Tristan lashes out at Odin for not telling him about Ares' womanising ways and the two come to blows. Odin barely has time to recover before he is viciously ambushed by Jonesy Brown, who disappears back into the night as Eden appears to keep vigil by her unconscious son.
