The Artful Codgers

Sunday, 20 June 2010

The remarkable story of how old age pensioners from working class Bolton in the UK managed to fool the art world’s experts, making an unprecedented range of fakes in their backyard garden shed.

George Greenhalgh, 84, and his wife Olive, 83, ran a diverse and prolific art forgery operation, thanks to the genius of their son, Shaun, 47, who copied modern masterpieces to ancient sculptures over a 20-year period from the mid 1980s.

His fastidious work duped the experts at the British Museum, Tate Modern, Henry Moore Institute, Chicago’s Institute of Art and the great auction houses of Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

The Greenhalghs made hundreds of thousands of pounds from their scams, yet continued to live in cramped squalor in their Bolton house littered with fakes. Shaun, who had never left home, shared a room with his mother and his 40-year-old brother.

How did this family pull the wool over the eyes of the world’s art experts?

George played ‘the frail, doddery old man in a wheelchair’ role to perfection and even in court, he strung the line that he was a war veteran with a bullet in his head after being shot in Italy. But this film reveals he was, in fact, a deserter who had spent the war in jail.

Ironically, in prison, where he is now serving four years for his crime, Shaun has begun to earn the respect from experts he always craved and a new career for him is just beginning.

The Artful Codgers will be repeated on ABC1 - Sunday, June 27 at 3.30pm

Stolen

Sunday, 20 June 2010

In 1990 during the early hours of the day after St.Patrick’s Day, thieves disguised as policemen gained access to Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and successfully executed the largest art heist in modern history.

Among the stolen priceless works was Vermeer's The Concert, one of only 35 surviving works from the master. To date, not a single work has been recovered.Stolen is a full exploration of this unusual crime and the fascinating, disparate characters involved - from the 19th century grande dame Isabella Gardner and the 17th century Dutch masters to a 21st century terrorist organisation with a penchant for stealing Vermeers.

At the heart of the film is the unlikely hero, renowned art detective, Harold Smith. The film follows Smith as he pursues the mystery of the stolen works examining the many possibilities as to where the art might be. Despite his lifetime battle with skin cancer, the cunning and witty Smith has made this case his personal obsession, working with what hope remains.

Stolen takes the audience on a journey to understand not just a crime, but also the nature of beauty itself, its fragility and its power.

Stolen will be repeated on ABC1 - Sunday, June 27 at 4.20pm

10 Items Or Less

Monday, 21 June 2010 New Series

Comedian John Lehr stars as Leslie Pool, hapless inheritor of his family grocery business in Ohio. For this, he abandons his plans of fame and fortune in New York.

However, the staff at the business, Greens&Grains, are somewhat dysfunctional and make the job chaotic for the novice Leslie. He is approached by an old school classmate, who now manages the rival supermarket giant, Super Value Mart, with a business proposition. He is mildly tempted, but discovers their plans are not on the same level.

Leslie is determined to make his long-time family business a success and rejects the mega offer, but his store’s staff get wind of the talk between the two businesses and decide their jobs are in jeopardy. Then comes a much-sweetened offer from the Super Value Mart. What is Leslie to do?

This spontaneous, improvised comedy is set in an actual working grocery store, that is open for business during shoots.

The boys of Boy Crazy Stacey throw an impromptu party celebrating their ARIA nomination for best video clip.

It’s only when a maudlin Cara (Kate Sherman) shows up that everyone finds out what Nash (Josh Mapleston) already knew – Comet (Ashley Fitzgerald) has left town.

With no bass player and the band required to play at the ARIAS, Nash is horrified to realise he needs to ask Val (Pat Ommundsen) back into the band.

The big day rolls around and having received no word from Comet, Jasper (Mark Pound) admits that her departure may have been all his fault.

The brothers have a huge blue but at least Nash’s feelings for Comet are finally out in the open.

Nash promises Jasper he will tell Jane (Alison Bell) everything, but somehow he fails to achieve this before she shows up and treats him to some rock star treatment in the male toilets.

The awards night kicks off and Boy Crazy Stacey’s big moment in the spotlight looms.

Moments before they’re due onstage however, Nash’s anguish over Comet and Jane gets the better of him and he freaks out, refusing to go onstage.

As the boys contemplate their front man flushing their big break down the toilet, they remain unaware that a late arrival is about to throw a big spanner in the works...

Kelly (Lauren Socha), Nathan (Robert Sheehan), Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), Alisha (Antonia Thomas) and Simon (Iwan Rheon) are five unruly UK teenagers forced to do community service as payback for their crimes.

But when a freak electrical storm hits their town, strange things begin to happen to them that are way out of their control. In fact, they have no idea that they've actually turned into superheroes, each with a power, a power they didn't choose or want - a power which reveals each of their deepest, darkest insecurities.

This week Curtis tries to use his superpower to go back to the past and change what happened the night he was caught by the cops, but he discovers that changing history isn't as easy as he thought. Sally, the gang's probation worker, discovers Tony's credit card in Simon's locker and is now convinced that the gang are involved in his disappearance.

The Street

Tuesday, 22 June 2010

Charlie, a demolition worker, is going to work away, leaving wife Roz at home with their teenage kids. At the end of a gruelling day, the crew go out to get drunk before Charlie retires to the room that he is sharing with fellow worker, Tom. Charlie is woken when Tom tries to get into bed with him. Affronted by Tom's actions, Charlie states that he’s straight; in fact he’s 100% straight. Tom reckons no-one’s 100 % straight.

The next day Charlie attempts to change hotel rooms, but it’s not an option, and so he’s stuck with Tom. That evening, Tom tries his luck again, and Charlie doesn't resist his advances this time and allows Tom into his bed.

Back at work, with the job finished, Charlie and Tom go for drinks in a local gay bar before going their separate ways. Charlie is attacked by a homophobic thug and loses his wallet - full of wages - and his watch, a present from Roz. Not wanting police involvement, he goes home with no money to show for the week’s work.

Charlie lies to Roz about what has happened to him. But the police arrest his attacker and trace Charlie. Feeling desperate, Charlie refuses to assist the police but his secret has leaked out. Charlie’s son, Luke, is taunted at school by Derek, the son of the policeman who interviewed Charlie. Luke’s response is to beat up Derek.

Charlie is called to the school where the headmaster tries to make sense of the situation. Once alone with Charlie, Luke tells him he knows he is gay.

Charlie’s world collapses around him - at work, everyone’s talking about him and he’s the butt of all their jokes. Having reached the end of his tether, Charlie comes clean to Roz and even though she appears unable to cope, the family is forced into an uneasy truce sharing secrets that they would rather not share.

Paris is one of the most visited cities by tourists in the world, but also suffers from some of the worst pollution in the European Union. Seven years ago Parisians turned their attention to the environment and their goal is to reduce car traffic in the city by 40% by 2020. Priority is given instead to public transport and other modes of environmentally friendly transport, such as bike riding.

Paris’s ambitious public-private Vélib´ bike-sharing initiative encourages residents to forgo cars for bikes. In the process, the program has fostered a unique popular culture, complete with its own language, jokes and pick-up lines. But in order to be successful, the planners of Vélib´ studied bike-sharing programs of varying success from other cities and worked out that Paris would initially need a minimum of 10,000 bikes to get the program working properly. e2 Transport explains in detail how this wonderful, environmentally friendly transport project works.

The success of the Vélib´ bike-sharing initiative has inspired cities like São Paulo, Venice and London to begin adopting similar programs of their own.

Design For Life

Wednesday, 23 June 2010

After last week’s disastrous presentation, Philippe Starck wanted to send all the students home, but instead he let them all stay – considering them to be equally as bad as each other.

On tonight’s episode of Design For Life, Philippe gives them the same brief as last week but under strict instructions that they must now all work alone. With only a week to prove themselves, the students waste no time getting on with the project, some choosing to fine tune their original ideas, others choosing to pursue a new concept.

Helen is the last to form an idea, a lamp with a shade that turns into a bat, she has only two days to pull it together. Ana Marie is quietly confident with her inventive pot plant design while Trevor moves away from his original homeless shelter design, instead opting to design an ergonomic chair for schoolchildren. Isla pursues her idea of helping the elderly with a product that will help their mobility, while Mike attempts to fine tune his magnetic dinner service, sending his rough sketches out for professional feedback.

On presentation day, Philippe listens intently to the ideas, reserving his comments. But when the students leave, he is frank in his discussions with Jasmine and Eugeni as to which projects he likes. With only four spots available to stay in the competition, Philippe is looking for the products that can be moved into the design and prototype stage.

When the students rejoin to hear the verdict, Philippe doesn’t hold back and tells them what he really thinks of their projects. Some he finds ambitious, others pointless and one that he finds just kooky. Which products will be refined into working prototypes?

Addicted To Surrogacy

Wednesday, 23 June 2010

Jill Hawkins is Britain’s most prolific childless surrogate. She’s never had a long-term relationship and has given away seven surrogate babies over the past 18 years. Now she’s trying for her final child, baby number eight. Janie and Peter have been trying for a baby through a surrogate for three years. They’ve finally had success with Tammy Lynn, from Cheney, Kansas who’s carrying twins for them. They want her to be the godmother but will she want that much contact considering this will be her sixth and seventh baby and she wants more.

28-year-old Amanda is a first-time surrogate and an independent single mum of three. Her experiences - and clashes - with the couple show the emotional journey that’s involved in surrogacy. Carole Horlock is the world’s most prolific surrogate with 12 babies to her name and two daughters of her own. She tells the story of her career-low: discovering a baby she’d given birth to was accidentally conceived with her own partner. What did she decide to do with it? And has she ever regretted that decision?

Around a thousand surrogate babies have been born in the UK over the past two decades. And in recent years, half of them have been born to serial surrogates: women who’ve been surrogates more than once. But the truth behind what drives these women is far more complex than money or altruism. This film follows the extraordinary stories of the women addicted to giving babies away.

Robin Hood: A Dangerous Deal

Saturday, 26 June 2010

Robin Hood (Jonas Armstrong) asks why Isabella (Lara Pulver) has made a pact with the Devil, otherwise known as Prince John (Toby Stephens), and accepted his patronage to become the new Sheriff of Nottingham. Defiant, Isabella insists she works for herself and intends to be the best Sheriff of Nottingham that England has ever known. Not convinced, Robin offers her a deal to work covertly with him for the rightful King of England, Richard The Lionheart, or discover what it is to be enemies. Isabella has a tough decision to make.

In her first public appearance at a court hearing, Sheriff Isabella shows clemency to a young wench, Meg (Holliday Grainger), who has stood up to the bullying men in her life. Isabella pardons her and makes a pledge to the people that, under her rule, Nottingham will be a fairer, more prosperous and peaceful place for everyone. Furthermore, she announces that she will execute that enemy of the people, her wicked brother, Guy of Gisborne (Richard Armitage), on Thursday at noon. For now, he can languish in the dungeons.

Suddenly, Isabella’s thuggish husband, Squire Thornton (Nicholas Gleaves), pushes through the crowd to depose her. As he threatens to make her life a living hell for deserting him, the resourceful and fiendishly clever Isabella tries to outwit him and regain power. Will Squire Thornton finally get his come-uppance?
