Wallace And Gromit's World Of Invention: Home Sweet Home

Sunday, 30 January 2011

The third episode of Wallace and Gromit’s World of Invention focuses on ingenious inventions for the home. From 1940s household robots and weird humanoid butlers to cutting edge labour saving devices, we travel around the world to explore the social history of domestic life through inventions.

We visit the home of iconic inventor Trevor Baylis, the man who revolutionised the radio and visit ‘George’, one of the first walking humanoid robots ever built, as he is brought to life for the first time in sixty years by his creator Tony Sale. We visit the world’s largest collection of the peculiarly English invention, the Teasmade, and delve into the mind of a young Malawian inventor who designed windmills to power his family’s home.

Finally Jem Stansfield visits some budding young inventors in Oxford who are recreating a fridge first devised by Einstein but which never got off the drawing board.

South Pacific: Strange Islands

Sunday, 30 January 2011

Flightless parrots, burrowing bats, giant skinks and kangaroos in trees. On the isolated islands of the South Pacific, the wildlife has evolved in extraordinary ways. But island living can carry a high price, for, when new species arrive, all hell breaks loose. And there lies a puzzle; why do animals perfectly adapted to island life simply give up the ghost?

The answer is revealed by the remarkable stories of some unlikely animals that survived on tiny islands off the coast of New Zealand. And the human history of the region is further evidence that, however idyllic it may appear, life on a South Pacific island may never be very far from catastrophe.

Grumpy Guide To...: Romance

Monday, 31 January 2011 Final

For grumpy people things that are supposed to make us universally, unreservedly happy have a habit of making us very grumpy indeed. Like romance - the whole boy meets girl business, yes ok if you’re in the first flush of youth or you’re newly in lurve, then the dating game is a wonderful thing, but for the rest of us, just the word romance sets us off on a string of grumpy thoughts. Some days the whole world seems to be canoodling in luvvy duvvy paradise, when the truth is most of us have a limited amount of success with the whole business. Or could it be that the process of finding someone nice to date is so hideous, so difficult that once we’ve found a partner we stick together in twos like glue.

Featuring: Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Tanya Byron, Jenny Éclair, Germaine Greer, Matthew Parris, Brian Conley, Justin Moorhouse, Mariella Frostrup, Lynn Barber, Ann Widdecombe MP, Guy Browning, Tracey Cox, Jenni Trent Hughes, Stuart Macconie, Richard Ingrams, Arabella Weir and Kathryn Flett.

Gandhi: The Road To Freedom

Monday, 31 January 2011 Final

In the final episode of this three-part series, journalist Mishal Husain explores the dramatic last years of Gandhi’s life, which culminated in his death by an assassin’s bullet. She gets to the bottom of an enduring mystery: why is Gandhi revered as Father of the Nation, when India turned its back on Gandhi’s blueprint for the country?

Mishal retraces Gandhi’s visit to England in 1931 and uncovers evidence that Gandhi may have unwittingly contributed to the eventual Partition of India. Newsreel footage from the time captures Gandhi meeting the people of Lancashire (Northern England) and London’s East End, and politician Tony Benn recalls meeting him as a six-year-old boy. Sixteen years later, India is free, but by then Gandhi is a broken man: sidelined from the centre of power and devastated by Partition and the horrific violence that Independence brings. But it is Gandhi’s darkest hour that finally brings his greatest triumph.

Through the survivors, and descendants of South African Indians who knew Gandhi, we discover how his non-violent protests helped influence the anti-apartheid movements.

However, he has another legacy that has not been forgotten by the black South Africans. While fighting for equal rights for the Indians in South Africa, he discriminated against the blacks – seeking preferential treatment for Indians over them.

Do Gandhi’s early views corrode his legacy or do they simply serve as a reminder that this ‘modern day prophet’ was, in fact, a product of his time?

Drive

Monday, 31 January 2011

The biggest killer of young men in Australia is car crashes. Tasmania lays claim to Australia’s highest rate of road fatality. Young men are dying in high speed, single vehicle crashes, crumpled in metal coffins, on lonely rural roads.

Scattered across the picturesque north west coast of Tasmania are memorials to those who have died on the roads. These sites are often well maintained over many years by those who can’t forget.

Amidst the grief that’s tearing communities apart are the young men’s peers who are still grappling with their own future and identity.

Meet Brad, 16, with his mates, a young group of skaters who are all on the verge of manhood and the throbbing break-horsepower of first cars.

The lives of these boys intersect with the stories of the young men who didn’t survive their risk taking, who didn’t make it to manhood.

Lincoln, 24, regains consciousness to the headlights of his car staring back at him and the sound of his best mate’s final blood curdling scream beside him. Boden, 19, trades his skate board for a mate’s car and a drunken, speeding death, leaving behind a new born son.

What does the future hold for the families, friends and sons that are left behind? For Brad and his crew? Picturesque Tasmania collides with the gritty, dark realism of every young man’s struggle to understand what’s inside him.

The Drive project explores young male car culture on the north west coast through arts-based workshops. Young men are mentored by professional artists through music, video and web art, examining car culture, positive risk taking and what it means to be a young man in this isolated, rural area.

Filmmakers, artists, youth workers and producers took on the challenge of shedding light not only on a disturbing statistic, but on the confused culture that lays claim to that statistic.

Three Boys Dreaming

Tuesday, 1 February 2011

Three Boys Dreaming follows three Indigenous boys over four years as they chase the dream of becoming professional AFL footballers. At stake is fame, prestige and a starting salary of $150,000 a year.

The film begins with the inaugural ‘Kickstart Camp’ in Melbourne in 2005. The cream of young Indigenous players from around Australia are brought together for a week-long talent camp where they get a sometimes brutal taste of what it takes to become an AFL star.

Among the boys is Daniel Jago, a good-natured 15 year old from Smithton in the remote north west of Tasmania. It is his first trip to Melbourne and the first time he’s been on a plane. He has silky skills combined with a robust attack at the ball. His simple, understated ambition is to play AFL footy and “maybe get married and have a few kiddies”.

Daen Lomas, an Indigenous boy from Sydney’s west also demands attention. Of all the boys at the camp his cheeky confidence and mischievous grin stand out. He has the skills and the ambition, but against him is a difficult family life with an absent father battling heroin addiction.

The dark horse is Perth boy Chris Yarran. He is so shy he barely says a word, even to other boys at camp. His father is serving a lengthy prison sentence and perhaps it is this, or some other sense of insecurity, that keeps him hiding under the peak of his cap. But when he plays footy, he comes alive.

It is these three boys whose stories and dreams we follow during key events over the next four years. It is the boys’ emotional journey that is most captivating. One boy grapples with the death of his father and faces criminal charges for an assault. Another is beset with a more common affliction – lack of ambition and an unwillingness to do the hard work required to succeed. The third boy has a steely determination, makes it all the way into the AFL and is recruited by the famous Carlton Football Club. He kicks a goal in his very first senior game.

Watch out for the AFL Indigenous All Stars vs Richmond Tigers match live (AEDT) from Darwin’s Marara Oval on Saturday, February 5th at 8.30pm on ABC1.

Anatomy: Eye

Tuesday, 1 February 2011 New Series

Anatomy: Eye is the first of three short films telling unusual and compelling stories which explore how sexuality and the body work together as driving forces in the creative process. All stories told touch upon a wide range of human experience and emotion and venture well beyond the boundaries of traditional arts documentaries. The three films, Eye, Mind and Face, showcase the work of four of Australia’s talented new generation of filmmakers.

Directed by Andy Canny and Donna McCrum, Eye follows award-winning Indigenous photographer Bindi Cole as she travels from her Melbourne home to the far north of Australia to document the beautiful transgender ‘Sistergirls’ of the Tiwi Islands. It is a journey that defies existing stereotypes of what it means to be an Indigenous Australian today. It is the story of Bindi’s next attempt to artistically question what constitutes an Aboriginal identity.

After meeting the loud and proud drag performer ‘Foxxy Empire’, alter ego of Tiwi Islander Jason De Santis, Melbourne girl Bindi accepts Foxxy’s curious invitation. Foxxy has invited Bindi to document his private, cultural, remote ‘Sistergirl’ world.

Arriving on the beautiful island shores of the Tiwi Islands, Bindi announces her artistic intention to create 12 photographic portraits of this fascinating group of Sistergirls. She meets the girls and is bowled over by their larger than life ‘mother’ Crystal Love. However, her excitement soon dims as the logistical difficulties and cultural protocol an outsider faces when coming into a remote Indigenous community, becomes a reality.

The Bionic Vet

Thursday, 3 February 2011

There’s no let up for The Bionic Vet at his multi-million-dollar state-of-the-art veterinary centre in Surrey, England.

The facility strains to cope as the cases continue to flood in.

This week the Bionic Vet (Noel Fitzpatrick) is presented with some major surgical challenges.

Seven-month-old puppy, Jolly, has a painful bone deformity in both his front legs.

His owner, Christine, agonises over whether it’s fair to put him through an operation as Noel proposes to use a new technique to treat the deformity.

Meanwhile, there’s also an emergency at the centre in the middle of the night; Breezy, a collie, has been hit by a car.

At first, Noel suspects a broken back but not everything is quite as it seems.

Then another road accident victim, a cat called William, desperately needs a life saving blood transfusion, and Flight, an excitable labrador, puts his newly transplanted hip under real pressure when he can’t contain his excitement at being reunited with his owner.

The Bionic Vet is pioneering revolutionary new surgical techniques to save and improve the lives of thousands of pets from all over Britain. He is a medical engineer, rebuilding animals using a whole range of metal structures, nuts, bolts, implants and groundbreaking procedures. For many of the animals referred to him, he’s their last hope.

Ashes To Ashes

Thursday, 3 February 2011

DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) and his team, DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes), DI Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) and DC Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster), are hot on the tail of a van they believe contains a large amount of heroin.

When the Quattro blocks the van's escape route, the team are faced with a woman brandishing a sawn-off shotgun but bullish Gene shows no fear and heads straight over to take on the female blagger. Things then take a strange turn when Gene seems to let her escape.

It transpires that the woman is an undercover police officer and Gene is not happy that an operation is taking place on his patch. DCI Jim Keats (Daniel Mays) is quick to shed some light on the situation; Louise Gardner from Hanfield police station has infiltrated the Staffords, a notorious crime family with whom Gene shares some history.

Determined to take over the operation, Gene manages to blow Louise's cover. Jim is not happy, and the situation is made worse when Louise turns up at CID beaten and bruised. With Louise under Gene's protection, the team have to work fast to stop Daniel Stafford getting his latest lot of heroin on to the streets.

As Gene and Alex close in, something is not quite right. Some of Louise's reports are missing and it looks as if someone on the inside is bending the rules to help keep the Staffords on the streets.

Meanwhile, the ghostly police constable with the 6-6-20 epaulette is still haunting Alex. She is increasingly convinced that he's the key to getting home.

Chopper Rescue

Friday, 4 February 2011

From the ocean to the outback, helicopter rescue crews save lives and face near death challenges every day. Chopper Rescue follows the work of the doctors, paramedics, rescue officers and aircrews who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They cover huge distances across Queensland, from the remote outback and tropics to the outermost limits of The Great Barrier Reef.

Working in difficult remote locations and in cramped conditions in mid air, the doctors and paramedics safely deliver patients to hospital and along the way deliver hospital standard care.

Chopper Rescue is genuine life and death human drama.

This week the Chopper Rescue team attend two emergencies.

A bad accident on an outback cattle property tests everyone on Rescue 521 from Townsville. A man has fallen from a moving vehicle and is reported to have severe head and chest injuries.

And on the Great Barrier Reef an English tourist with crushing chest pains gets a rapid response from the crew of Rescue 510.

New Tricks

Friday, 4 February 2011 New SeriesThe team is asked to reopen a case when Vicky Anderson tells them that a psychic has uncovered new information about her father's murder - allegedly gained from the deceased himself - information that has never been disclosed to anyone outside the investigation.

Vicky's father, Douglas Anderson was a wealthy, well-respected financier in Hong Kong, and her best friend Penny was the daughter of Douglas's friend John Plummer, who headed a major construction company on the island. Both Vicky and Penny were only children and both had lost their mothers. When Plummer was found guilty of defrauding a Chinese corporation over a construction deal and sent to prison, Douglas became Penny's guardian, and so Vicky and Penny went from being best friends to de facto sisters. When the British lease on Hong Kong expired in 1997, Douglas decided to retire back to England and took the two girls with him.

Clearly sceptical about the psychic’s information the team starts digging and discover that the victim, Douglas Anderson, wasn't as squeaky clean as he might have appeared. Although he took over the care of Penny, it would appear that he also duped his friend Plummer out of money owed from a fraudulent scheme and allowed his friend to take the rap for the scam (Plummer subsequently died in prison).

And then, two years ago, Anderson apparently surprised one or more burglars, whereupon a fight ensued, during which he suffered a heart attack and died, and the burglars were never caught.

With Vicky now under the spell of psychic Sebastian Carter, he tells her that Douglas’s ‘spirit’ needs his daughter to carry out for him a quest for him. Carter says he keeps referring to “the key”; several keys were found scattered around the crime scene as if someone had tried them all in the various drawers and boxes in the room, a fact that was never made public. So where is Carter getting this information from? Anderson’s adopted daughter Penny expresses her anguish that Vicky has been taken in by Carter but can shed no light on the existence of an unopened box Halford mentions in passing.

Meanwhile the team discover there was another person who went to prison as a result of Plummer (and apparently Anderson's dodgy dealings in Hong Kong) - his name was Lau Cheung. Perhaps he came to the UK to seek revenge? And there’s another lead - Simon Beswick, former cellmate of John Plummer who since his release has returned to the UK and is now working as an accountant in Chinatown.
