Yellowstone: Winter

Sunday, 20 September 2009 New Series

In this portrait of a year in Yellowstone, we follow the fortunes of America’s wildlife icons as they face the challenges of one of the most extraordinary wildernesses on Earth. Yellowstone is no ordinary wilderness. A lost world of vast plains and forests defended on all sides by towering mountains, home to America’s last great bison herds and realm of the wolf. It is also the most extensive thermal area on Earth. There are more than 10,000 boiling springs, fumaroles and bubbling mud pots here and more geysers than the rest of the world put together. These strange natural wonders first made Yellowstone famous and still make it unique.

In each episode, we join the charismatic cast of Yellowstone’s wildlife as they turn to face the extreme challenges of the seasons and we discover just what it takes to brave temperatures 40 degrees below zero, to live through raging forest fires, or to fight to the death for the right to breed.

This first episode features Winter. Yellowstone is frozen solid – locked in snow as deep as a house for over six months. As we follow the grip of winter over the course of six freezing months, we chart the fortunes of Yellowstone’s wildlife in a finely balanced fight to survive. Whether you live off stored fat, whether you hunt for meat or whether you hibernate, you need to take every advantage, however slight, to save your precious energy – and then you just might make it through to frolic in the green grass of spring.

Bison use their massively powerful heads to dig with, through some of the deepest snow in America, to reach the grass beneath. A red fox listens out for mice scurrying six feet beneath the snow before diving head-first into the drift to snap up its prey, while otters slide through Yellowstone’s winter wonderland to find any remaining open water where they can fish. All the while, as the herds of elk and bison are gradually weakened by the cold, one animal gets stronger – the wolf. But with one of the world’s largest volcanoes beneath the surface, everything from the freezing cold to the creation of a snow-storm is determined by the power at Yellowstone’s heart.

Midsomer Murders: Small Mercies

Sunday, 20 September 2009

John Nettles and Jason Hughes are back investigating deadly deeds and gruesome goings-on in a brand new series of Midsomer Murders. In episode five, Small Mercies, Gulliver’s Travels is re-enacted at a model village as the first of a series of mysterious murders.

Robert Moss, caretaker of the model village in Little Worthing, finds the body of villager Richard Tanner lying in a pool of blood amidst the village’s tiny cottages. He has been stabbed and bled to death, tied to the ground by strings and pegs – copying Gulliver’s capture in the novel Gulliver’s Travels.

Richard Tanner, a traditionalist who did not want Little Worthing to become a tourist village, is widely regarded as a nuisance and a trouble-maker. Resisting every new development designed to attract tourists, he had recently upset villagers by smashing the windows of the Little Worthing craft shop. But Richard had made other enemies too. He’d threatened the local craft shop owner, Mike Johnson, for making a pass at his sister. And he had recently dumped his girlfriend Rebecca, Little Worthing’s nursery school teacher, who admits she does not deal well with rejection.

Rebecca says that although she was hurt and angry, she didn’t murder Richard. But Jones notices that the children in her class have drawings all over the classroom walls of Gulliver pinned to the ground. It was a theme suggested by Franklin’s Hotel owner Edward Palfrey, who has also just discovered that his teenage daughter was sleeping with Richard Tanner too.

When Christa, Edward’s teenage daughter, is found dead at the local village boat race, the plot thickens. Could Bernice, Edward’s girlfriend, who Christa hated, be the culprit? She has motives of her own. Barnaby and Jones sift through a roll-call of suspects to identify the murderer – and it will be who you least expect.

Ashes To Ashes

Monday, 21 September 2009

Fund-raiser Gill Hollis has spent the last year travelling Great Britain in a bathtub of beans raising money for Children in Need. So, when he is shot in the arm and robbed of all the money he raised, DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) and the team need to do all they can to bring the robbers to justice.

DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) believes a Crime Stoppers-style reconstruction, and the help of Shaw (‘keep ’em peeled’) Taylor, will help lead to an arrest, much to Gene’s disapproval.

Gill fails to remember anything about the incident, so Alex takes him back to the crime scene to try to jog his memory. As Gill’s behaviour becomes erratic near the area of the robbery, Alex realises he has OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) that not only gets in the way of any progress, but also gets right on Gene’s nerves.

Having been warned by the Ashes Clown that someone is going to die, Alex knows it is vitally important that the armed robbery is solved quickly and she is convinced that Gill’s OCD is the key.

But Gene is fed up with doing what Alex tells him and decides to deal with the case in his own way – beating a confession out of anyone who gets in his way. Alex is terrified that Gene’s actions will lead to a death and has to fight to keep control of the case.

Gene finally gets a break that proves Gill’s story is not quite so straightforward, and Alex soon finds herself trying to save the life of one of the team.

The Wild West: The Gunfight At The OK Corral

Tuesday, 22 September 2009 FinalThe gunfight at the OK Corral was the classic Western shoot-out. It eventually turned one man into a great American hero and a symbol of the nation. His name was Wyatt Earp. But after the smoke cleared on that fateful day in Tombstone in the autumn of 1881 with Tom McLaury, his brother Frank and Billy Clanton lying dead in the dusty street, Wyatt Earp wasn’t seen as a hero but a villain. The legendary lawman was arrested and put on trial for murder. And the prosecution were so sure of victory that they pushed for the ultimate penalty – death. The resulting court case was one of the most dramatic in American history and its outcome helped shape the nation.

The most famous of a new breed of lawmen, Wyatt Earp had himself been a notorious gunfighter. But when he came riding into Dodge City in 1876, the mayor hired him to be the peacekeeper. The gun-slinging drunken cowboys had met their match. Earp was tougher and meaner than they were. But he understood that you couldn’t end the violence, you could only keep it at bay – keep it away from the community you were trying to protect. He was given full control and immediately created the famous ‘deadline’ – a border into town beyond which no one could carry a gun. Anywhere outside the ‘deadline’ it was every man for himself, anything went. Inside the town, Wyatt Earp was in control and he made the rules. Tombstone, his next town, had a similar ‘deadline’.

The gunning down of three men by three Earp brothers and their psychotic friend ‘Doc’ Halliday symbolised a lawless world, but the fact it led to a trial is vital, symbolising how the rule of law would eventually take over from the rule of the gun.

Ironically, the trial spared Wyatt’s life, but the law was not able to protect his brothers, gunned down in the following year by the McLaury clan. So in a final bloody climax, Wyatt abandoned his badge, and hunted down and killed the killers.

This film recreates what happened in the 30 seconds of mayhem at the OK Corral, and the burning resentment of the 24 hours that led up to it. Drama – based on court records, letters and press reports – recreates the fevered sense of excitement, punctuated by expert testimony and detailed ballistic testing. If any single episode of history can be said to embody the Wild West, it is this: the true story of the Gunfight at the OK Corral.

Liam Cunningham (The Wind That Shook The Barley, Messiah, A Love Divided, Falling for a Dancer) plays Wyatt Earp.

Fear, Stress And Anger: Stress And Drugs

Tuesday, 22 September 2009

Martin’s stress levels are soaring as his worry about being jobless and in debt mount. Teaching daughter Chloe to drive doesn’t help, especially when she smacks up the rear end of another car.

Julie asks their best friends, Sarah and Duncan, how to reduce his anxiety. Duncan advises Martin to get a completely new job and Sarah gives Julie her leftover prescription drugs to feed Martin to relax him for the interviewing process.

It is not such a good idea as Martin goes very strange in front of the very straight interviewing panel.

Artscape: Connected By Light

Tuesday, 22 September 2009

Connected By Light is a visually rich documentary that follows internationally acclaimed Australian media-artist Lynette Wallworth, as she creates a new work Duality of Light.

Wallworth’s work is storming the traditional boundaries between art galleries and film festivals, and she is being invited to exhibit her installations at major festivals around the world. At the 2009 Sundance Film Festival she was invited to give the Festival’s founder Robert Redford, a personal tour of Evolution of Fearlessness. While world renowned, her work is barely known in Australia and she is only starting to be recognised here as a major new voice in contemporary art.

Specialising in the development of extremely technical installations, Wallworth creates interplay between the moving image, sound, space, light and the viewer. Her work fascinates the cinema world because this art offers the viewer an interactive and immersive experience. Simply put, she is able to do things with narrative, moving images and viewer participation that cinema cannot.

At the heart of Connected By Light is the creation of Wallworth’s latest work Duality of Light. In a bold move, Adelaide Film Festival director Katrina Sedgwick commissioned Wallworth to create this work for the 2009 Festival. Sedgwick sees Wallworth’s work as having a relevant position within the Festival given the splintering of the cinema ‘screen’ into a vast number of new spaces. Duality of Light will conclude the themes of a trilogy begun by Invisible By Night (2004) and Evolution of Fearlessness (2006).

River Cottage Spring

Wednesday, 23 September 2009 New Series

Fresh produce is bursting into season across the country’s fields, allotments and gardens and as spring reaches its peak, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall cooks and tastes his way through the abundant crops on offer in River Cottage Spring, the definitive guide to locally produced, seasonal food.

Fresh from his success with Hugh’s Chicken Run, Hugh raids River Cottage’s kitchen garden to show viewers they can enjoy a slice of any season, River Cottage style, where ever they live, with tantalising recipes for asparagus, artichokes and of course lamb. British asparagus is a favourite of Hugh’s and after planting his first crop in the River Cottage kitchen garden, Hugh challenges his head chef from the River Cottage Canteen to a cook off challenge. Will it be Hugh’s ‘make-your-own’ hollandaise and fresh asparagus that is served on the menu?

With lambing season well underway at River Cottage, Hugh also takes on a butcher’s apprentice to not only remind viewers of those forgotten cuts of meat that are tasty and economical, but to also gain a real understanding in how to get the best from their meat. During the series, Hugh will challenge five Bristol families to turn an acre of derelict city land into a small-holding; a vegetarian into a butcher’s apprentice and along the way give an update on the nation’s change of heart over Britain’s most popular meat, as a result of his Chicken Out! campaign.

Australia's Heritage: National Treasures: Rules Of AFL

Thursday, 24 September 2009

Take a voyage of discovery with The Chaser’s Chris Taylor as he reveals the secrets behind a fascinating mix of treasures from Australia’s National Heritage List.

Chris travels around Australia delivering historical snapshots of places from the National Heritage List. Established by the Australian Government in 2004, the National Heritage List is a collection of places that contribute to Australia's national identity.

In this mini-documentary series, Chris talks with experts and enthusiasts, revealing fascinating insights into our famous and not-so-famous past. Visiting objects and places of significance, including Fremantle Prison and the ruins of the Dutch merchant ship Batavia in Western Australia, the Eureka flag and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria, Francis De Groot’s sword in NSW and the Naracoorte Caves Fossil Mammal site in South Australia, Chris Taylor’s enthusiasm shines a welcome spotlight on the sometimes forgotten gems that are an irreplaceable part of our national story.

In the eighth documentary of the series, Chris visits the National Heritage-listed Melbourne Cricket Ground where the ten original hand-written rules of AFL are kept in the MCG museum. If Australian Rules football was a religion, these rules would be its bible. Driven by champion sportsman and sporting administrator Tom Wills in 1859, the rules established a football code to help cricketers keep fit in the off-season. While several rules remain the same today, some such as allowing defenders to trip a man in possession of the ball have been scrapped. The Australian Football League is now a multi-million dollar business and one of the most popular sports in Australia. These hand-written rules are where it all began.

Rodney's Robot Revolution

Thursday, 24 September 2009

Come on a nail-biting journey as robot scientist Rodney Brooks attempts to build a robot as sophisticated as a human being.

For nearly a hundred years, science fiction has heralded a brave new world of robots. For scientists, the reality of that dream is much harder to achieve – but there are pioneers who relish the enormous challenge of integrating mind and machine. Australian-born Rodney Brooks is one such pioneer. With a vision that is truly revolutionary, Brooks wants to do to robots what billionaire Bill Gates did to the computer – to make them so affordable and personal that they will become commonplace both at home and in the workplace.

Professor Brooks is testing his robot-building mettle with what has become the most challenging project of his entire career: to build a robot for the Pentagon capable of playing an ancient Chinese board game against a human opponent. Brooks has only five months to build it from scratch, making his challenge that much more outrageous.

His team must work around the clock if they are to accomplish the task. To play the board-game, the robot will need to possess subtle human-like touch and dexterity, characteristics yet to be conquered by any robot anywhere. With so much at stake, tensions run high and hopes are dashed at almost every turn as Brooks and his team battle to overcome technological problems to create the complex social robot.

Many believe that the need for social robots has never been so great, from working alongside soldiers on the battlefield to helping society cope with the problem of an unprecedented ageing population.

Rodney’s Robot Revolution is a fascinating journey inside one of the greatest minds and robot labs in the world. The documentary is thought provoking and explores the ethics of a new world approaching – one where we could soon see intelligent robots living among us, in all corners of life.

The Bill: Conviction: City Riot

Saturday, 26 September 2009

In the wake of their poor performance in controlling a riot on the local estate, Insp. Rachel Weston (Claire Goose) takes her officers on a public order training exercise.

Sergeants Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) and Stone (Sam Callis), are each put in charge of a team, and Stone, with his usual disregard for the rules, deliberately disobeys an order – ruining the exercise.

With tensions already high between the two sergeants over whether Smithy should have owned up to bashing people-trafficker Jason Devlin (Guy Flanagan), Stone’s behaviour riles him enough for it to end in an all-out brawl between the two of them.

Meanwhile, back at Sun Hill, DCI Meadows (Simon Rouse) and DI Manson (Andrew Lancel) are dealing with Devlin’s allegations that Smithy bashed him and planted evidence. To test his story, they enlist Smith’s reluctant colleague, DC Stevie Moss (Lucy Speed), to quiz him about what happened. But Smithy sticks to his guns, prompting Meadows to promise his full support.

On her return, Supt. Heaton (Daniel Flynn) takes Insp. Weston into his office to tell her he is leaving to lead a specialist unit dealing with human trafficking, and would like her to join him. Weston says that she feels she hasn’t proved herself at Sun Hill yet, but Heaton counters that with an offer for her to come back to the station after 12 months.

As they discuss Smithy’s situation, Heaton tells Meadows about his new job and says he has recommended that he take his place.

Meanwhile, as Smithy deals with the fact that he will have to lie in court, and that Devlin says he has a witness to the assault, he takes consolation in that Meadows has promised his full support. However, his confidence wavers when Stone tells him that Meadows searched their lockers while they were away.

Talking Heads: Guy Cooper

This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson’s guest is Guy Cooper, the recently-retired director of Sydney’s Taronga Park Zoo.

Ask Cooper about his highlights while at Taronga and he’ll tell you about the first Asian elephant calf born in Australia, return of animals like the Corroboree frog to the wild and research work being undertaken on the Tasmanian Devil and the Great Southern Oceans.

Under his stewardship the Zoo has undergone a major transformation. There’s been a massive injection of funds and cages have been replaced by habitats. Breeding programs for endangered species are now a priority, and research and education programs have been stepped up.

Ironically, Cooper grew up in a small New Zealand community where hunting, shooting and fishing were a way of life. Until he took on the top job at Taronga, he was a highly successful corporate executive.

But his passion for conservation and the welfare of animals and his “outsider’s view” of the Zoo have proved a dynamic force. Not only has he made Taronga more relevant but he’s also put in place a Foundation to help secure its future.

So what next for the man who’s just left his second family?

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors showcases the best new Australian inventions, from the innovative to the inspirational, the weird and the wonderful. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: designer and inventor Sally Dominguez, surgeon and inventor Fiona Wood, and futurist and author Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the program:

FINGER HINGE – by inventor David Ashard from NSW. The gap between a door and the door frame is a dangerous place. When young children put their hands near this gap, all it takes is a gust of wind or an accidental door slam to crush their little fingers, sometimes resulting in amputation. The problem is more common than you might think, with 100 incidents requiring hospitalisation each year in the Sydney Children's Hospital alone. Tonight’s panellist, Professor Fiona Wood, is acutely aware of this problem, revealing that as a medical intern she was regularly called in to hospital in the middle of the night to repair damaged fingernail beds.

Inventor David Ashard, who patented his first invention at the age of 16, first appeared on The New Inventors in 2005 with his Rescue Door System, an interior door that opens in the opposite direction in an emergency. Unfortunately, this invention was inspired by a tragic story. One day David’s uncle had gone to the bathroom and collapsed behind the door. It took 40 minutes for David to break his way into the bathroom, by which time his uncle had passed away. Having recreated a door, David soon got to work on recreating the hinge. The Finger Hinge eliminates the gap between the hinge side of the door and the door jamb, making it impossible for fingers to be crushed. The hinge can be fitted to new homes or retrofitted to existing doors. It can also open the door in both directions, so that people cannot become trapped if they have an accident.

FASTRACK – by inventor Cameron Oldfield from NSW. When you need to tie something down to the roof of your car, the most common way is to use elastic luggage straps. However, their strong elasticity and hard ends lead to 540 people being hospitalised each year with severe eye injuries. Cameron, a 26 year old industrial design student, has spent seven years working on the solution. Fastrack is stored inside a roof rack so it is always ready, but has no metal or hooks on the end, so your eyes are safe.

HYDROGEL SCAFFOLDS – by inventors Cameron Ferris and Marc in het Panhuis from NSW. For many people, an organ transplant is the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, there is a serious undersupply of donors. Tissue engineering seeks to get around this problem, fabricating living replacement parts for the body by seeding cells to a scaffold. Hydrogel Scaffolds uses a common food additive-based Thermo-Jelly, which is biodegradable and electrically conductive, so that it is not rejected and more closely mimics the natural regenerative processes in the body.

The New Inventors will be repeated on ABC2 – Friday, September 25 at 4:30pm

Catalyst

Giant Cuttlefish

What has three hearts, blue blood, a beak like a parrot, and can change its colour in a second? The answer is a cuttlefish, and right now in spring-time, the eggs of one particular species – the giant Australian cuttlefish - are starting to hatch. There’s one place in the world where a quarter of a million of these amazing animals migrate each year for a spectacular love-in and that’s where Mark Horstman takes you for a dive to find out why their unique nursery is subject to a mortal threat.

Daniel O’Doherty

If you’re ever been on the road during school drop off or pick up time you’ll be familiar with the traffic chaos caused by concentrated bursts of parents chauffeuring their darlings to and from class. So, what’s the environmental impact of the school run? One proactive schoolkid decided to work out the effect of travel on his school’s carbon footprint and what could be done to reduce it. His project won the 2008 Action Against Climate Change Eureka Schools Prize.

Sea Urchins

Not all visitors to Tasmania are received with open arms and some, like the New South Wales Sea Urchin, are definitely outstaying their welcome. An unusually strong East Australian current has brought warmer waters to Tasmania and allowed urchin larvae to survive a long journey from their home in New South Wales. But they are typical tourists; they show no respect for the locals and leave a path of devastation in their wake. Surfing scientist, Ruben Meerman, reports on the damage these spiky invaders are causing the local fishing industry and the surprising approach scientists have developed to stop them in their tracks.
