St. Joseph HS Faculty & Staff Continue to LIVE the MISSION!

Message from the PresidentBrother Thomas Harding, FSCSt. Joseph Class of 1972

Dear Friends & Benefactors of St. Joseph High School,

Many of you probably recall the Five Core Principles of our Christian Brothers’ Lasallian schools---They are: Faith in the Presence of God; Quality Education; Respect for ALL Persons; Inclusive Community; and Concern for the Poor and Social Justice. ALL of us should recall as alums being called to prayer before each class with: “Let us remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.” It is unique to us Lasallians and puts our minds and hearts in the presence of

God---so we find God in our midst. Our St. Joseph Community espouses our respect for each other. The calling together of all our SJHS constituents speaks of respect and of love. We do not simply say our respect, but we show our respect! At our St. Joseph HS we focus on welcoming, encouraging and inviting. We look to include others rather than exclude them from our school community. Our greatest strength is that we are a community of individuals who bring different experiences and circumstances to our campus where we all work together for a common cause. Our goal is to learn to love self, love others and most importantly, to love our God. So, these principles imbue our everyday life here at St. Joseph HS as well as all other Lasallian schools we Brothers have throughout the world.

Once again as we close out one school year and open a new school year, I want to use this opportunity to both express our Charger gratitude and appreciation to our many supporters of our mission at St. Joseph and at the same time, report to you concerning some achievements, accomplishments and some good news.

Our 58th year of Catholic Lasallian education was one of sustained energy and as alums returned to campus it was a year filled with stories of past experiences of academic and extracurricular successes. Those good stories and experiences are always helpful whenever St. Joseph HS alums engage with our present Charger Scholars!

As of June, 2018, more than $8.6 million was earned and awarded in renewable scholarships and academic grants to the members of our Class of 2018 AND over these past five years, our graduating seniors have earned in excess of $40 Million in such support for their own higher, advanced education. That is a great story to proclaim given the rich diversity among our students!

In addition to the recent academic success our students experienced, St. Joseph High School had an outstanding year overall in extracurricular activities, including both community service learning and in campus ministry. As you take some time to review the enclosed information, I know you will be filled with CHARGER PRIDE as you learn of these various successes. Our St. Joseph High School Charger expression “VINCIT QUI LABORAT---He Conquers, Who Labors”, is demonstrated in our classrooms, labs, theater, chapel, as well as in the two gyms and the playing fields on campus!

This last operating year saw our St. Joseph High School sustained nearly a 100 % student retention rate and a nearly 100% tuition-receivable rate, which has become a year-over-year-over year experience these past three years of our recent history and about which we are justly proud. Our Advancement strategies and efforts realized another year-over-year-over year level of unrestricted cash contributions to our overall program. I truly sense, that with the realization of “THE BROTHERS ARE BACK” is a characteristic seen by our alums as great added-value to the mission of our St. Joseph High School. More of our alums & benefactors continue to share with many here that it is time to recognize that value of the Brothers and to invest OR re-invest in our St. Joseph High School. This last year saw yet again greater engagement by our alums and friends to St. Joseph High School noted by over $697,700 of fundraising revenue to the overall program. That is a positive performance indicator. We welcome that engagement!

The relationship of “Shared Mission” of collaboration with our Lewis University continued yet again this last year, as together Lewis & SJHS shared institutional time, treasure and talent enriching and enhancing both campuses! This year ahead finds us collaborating at another level, between the University’s College of Education and our SJHS colleagues. This ongoing engagement and collaboration continues to bring energy and innovation to the instructional program as we look to making SJHS better overall. Once again, St. Joseph High School is very grateful for this ongoing relationship of shared mission with our Lewis University community of Lasallians! Our own St. Joseph High School has been strengthened and enhanced by this outstanding relationship and expression of shared mission.

Our successes and achievements in so many of our school’s programs and activities are due in large part to the high level of service and dedication of our faculty, our staff, our activity moderators, athletic coaches and our volunteers who together lovingly support ALL of our endeavors. THANK YOU so very much!

Our school leadership, faculty and staff continue to keep the “bar” set high as we begin our 59th school year. Together, we challenge ourselves to examine strategies to grow our school programs and services as well as advance our Lasallian & Catholic mission of education to the young people who come to us.

So, please know of our sincere appreciation and deep gratitude for your own sustaining support of our St. Joseph High School. I am humbled by your own expressions of support during this last year, and I invite you to renew your own gift of support going forward because that does make a real, tangible difference in the educational experience which we endeavor to provide each of our Charger Scholars!

Page 8: 2017-2018 Annual Report - St. Josephstjoeshsalumni.org/school_files/sj-ihmalumni/pages/Annual...plants of Baxter International. The SJHS Theatre Department sponsored two productions:

Ways to Support SJHS• Give a gift (online, mail, or phone) to the Annual Fund that supports Financial Aid and Scholarships for the Charger Scholars.

Big or small, every gift counts, and goes to support the education and development of future St. Joseph High School Alumni.

• Naming Opportunities, Sponsorship Gifts, and Charger Club The St. Joseph High School Advancement staff has created a series of named gifts, sponsorship opportunities, and a giving club to recognize leadership gifts that help to support the school in a

number of significant ways. Please visit www.stjoeshs.org to learn more.

• Gifts of Stock St. Joseph High School can receive gifts of publicly traded stock. Each stock must have been held for at least one year and must have appreciated in value. Before transferring securities please call the Development Office

at 708.562.7488, ext. 153 to inform us the gift is forthcoming.

• Donor Advised Funds St. Joseph can accept gifts from Donor Advised Funds.

• Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for IRAs (except Roth IRAs), you must begin taking withdrawals by April 1 following the year you turn age 70½, whether or not you’re still working. After that, you’ll need to continue withdrawing a portion of your retirement plan and IRA account balance each year. Transferring your RMD to St. Joseph High School will reduce your adjusted

gross income, thus reducing your income tax.

• Remember St. Joseph High School in your will Please call Joel Kolner, Director of Advancement, if you would like to remember St. Joseph High School in your will.

• Join Us Attend alumni, athletic, and school events!

• Keep St. Joseph High School in your prayers.

Thank you for considering St. Joseph High School for your charitable giving!
