During the 21st Annual Bravo Awards held in Bellflower, SJHS senior, Madilyn Bagley, received the Outstanding Service Award for saving a young girl’s life. The honor was presented to her by Bellflower Mayor Sonny R. Santa Ines and the Bellflower City Council.

This is what Madilyn did to earn the recognition.

On the afternoon of Friday, October 24, 2014, she was driving home from a dental appointment and had just made a right turn on South Street. The vehicle next to her made a sudden stop, and she saw a person fall in front of that car. Madilyn stopped her car, and parked in a way to block traffic.

Next, she got out to help. Sprawled on the ground was a girl

about her age, a stranger to Madilyn at the time. Madilyn ran up to her, told her that she was a trained Los Angeles County Lifeguard and was there to help. She stabilized the girl (named Lorraine) by holding her neck in case the spine was broken, and by telling her to stay on the ground. She wanted her to stay still to prevent further injury. She then talked to Lorraine in a reassuring way to keep her calm and told her that the paramedics were coming.

The award recognizes youth that make a difference in their Councils through servant leadership. A panel of scouting executives read all of the applications and selected her and three others from the Long Beach Area Council.

Venturing, a project of the BSA, includes young women. The program provides the needed skills to help youth make ethical choices, experience a fun program full of adventure and challenges, acquire leadership skills, and take advantage of opportunities to advance their skills and knowledge in the areas of high adventure, sports, arts, hobbies, religious life, and Sea Scouting.

“This past year, I got involved with Area 4, and earned a VLA,” Denise Cabral said. “My Venturing journey is

one of the best experiences I have ever had, and I love leading the adventure with my crew (Crew 134), my Council, and the Area 4 Western Region.”

The Venturing Leadership Award recognizes exceptional contributions to Venturing and to those who exemplify the Venturing Code and Venturing

my training and began helping. After Lorraine was with the paramedics, I remembered something my instructor had said: ‘Nothing is ever going to

happen in the pool. It’ll happen outside the pool.’ And he was right. The whole thing caught me off-guard, but I knew what to do and was glad to do it.”

In the end, Lorraine suffered minor injuries and is fine today, thanks to Madilyn.

Helping the dear neighbor, that’s what a Saint Joseph High School education is all about.

I remembered something my instructor had said: ‘Nothing is ever going to happen in the pool. It'll happen outside the pool.’ And he was right.

Part of a family’s commitment to, and partnership with, the school’s efforts to ensure the high quality of education is a family pledge of $1,500.00 or more, spread over four years. The gift is tax deductible and can be paid in full, in installments, and/or with matching contributions from the parent’s employer.

In acknowledgment of the contribution, you will receive a tax letter by the end of January each year.

We want to thank all of you who participate in this program. Your contributions have done a great deal to support student scholarships, building improvements, and the endowment fund.

If you have yet to make a pledge, it isn’t too late. Forms are available from Alicia Cocchia Guggiana ’87 in the front office, and online at www.sj-jester.org, Giving, Parent Pledge Program.

Planned Giving is a method of supporting non-profits and charities that enables philanthropic individuals or donors to make larger gifts than they could make from their income. It integrates sound personal, financial, and estate planning concepts into lifetime or testamentary giving. Gifts can be made with cash, equity, or property.

You can make a significant contribution to the future of SJHS, its graduates, and the community through planned giving vehicles. Some vehicles include bequests, charitable gift annuities, IRAs and tax-deferred accounts, gifts of stock or real estate, and life insurance.

A planned gift comes with several benefits.

1. Satisfaction of knowing that SJHS will

It’s hard to believe Spring is coming because California has had Spring-like weather for quite a while now. I always associate this time of year with renewal. I renew my garden. I spring clean at home. I get my car oil changed. I do all the external preparations needed so that I am ready for guests on Easter Sunday. But what about my/our internal preparations? Let me share a story about that.

Although I’m not as good at it as they are, I think I inherited the joy of gardening from my mom and her sisters. They loved, and still do love to see their flowers and herbs bloom. I would watch my Mom garden from the comfort of our couch, usually while watching Three Stooges marathons. She’d go out early morning and only take a 3 p.m. break for her afternoon espresso to give her a boost of energy to return to her

International students choose SJHS for the same reasons as our domestic students: excellent academic instruction, preparation for entrance into prestigious universities/colleges, and the opportunity to explore their interests with numerous co-curricular activities. Currently the total of 41 students are from Demark, China, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Vietnam. Here are two of their stories.

Sophomore Heuijoo (Jane) Byun is from Seoul, South Korea. In seventh grade

Jane struggled with English comprehension and often felt frustrated. Her determination and hard work have resulted in her current 3.83 GPA. She is a member of the Varsity Golf team, the Key Club, and the Academic Decathlon team. Jane appreciates the friendly, helpful, and welcoming community at Saint Joseph. She is enjoying her Honors Chemistry class and plans to major in Chemistry or Biology at U.C. Berkeley.

Senior Qingge (Gladi) Han attended a boarding school in Beijing before entering SJHS

as a freshman. Her family is from Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China. Looking back, Gladi remembers the difficult adjustment to reading, writing and speaking English every day. Her health class was especially challenging, but her teacher frequently offered assistance and helped her highlight key points to study for tests. She soon realized that she could always go to her teachers for guidance. Gladi has been a member of the after school choir for four years and is active in the French and Game clubs. The cherished friendships Gladi has maintained over the past four years mean the most to her. She often keeps in touch with friends who have graduated and visits them during holidays and the summer months. With a 4.33 GPA, Gladi’s goal is to attend UCLA, USC, or NYU.

The Jester Arts Program teamed with the St. John Bosco High School art classes for the

2015 Student Art Auction. Mrs. Jane Mah, Fine Arts Department Chair, and her students brought in over $1,000 to help grow the visual arts program. Students of the sculpture, photography, and drawing and painting classes provided the works to be sold. Mrs. Mah also enlisted donations from friends and a number of faculty artists for the gallery and sale.

Proceeds from the Fall Musical, The Spitfire Grill—$1,100—were given to The Crossroads House. This charity, under the direction of Sr. Terry Dodge, SSL, ’69, provides a stable home to women

her plants? She’d look at me with her Cheshire grin and shared that it was her alone time with God and everybody in heaven. She said she spent those hours gladly praying for us and anybody else who might need prayers. She spent time, too, reflecting on her own life. She said that outdoors amid her beautiful flowers, cacti, trees, and shrubs was when she felt the closest to God. She was doing internal spring cleaning.

At the time, I just chalked it up as another “mom faith story.” It wasn’t until later in life that I realized it was her way to always be ready for resurrection. Gardening and praying were symbiotic for her. Plants needed tending in order to grow. Much like our spiritual lives need tending, not just during lent, but every day as we await the resurrection of Jesus, our brother, sent by his loving Father, to save us. My mom was in a continual journey toward salvation. There were no starts and stops, no sputter steps along the way. She went full throttle toward the open arms of our God because “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” I try to emulate my mom’s “internal spring cleaning” methods. I look for the quiet moments, whether indoors or outdoors, to reflect on my life and its many blessings and to pray for all who need them.

I pray that you and your families have beautiful Easters filled with God’s unconditional love, and that you, too, find the quiet moments to just be with God.

May Our Lady, St. Joseph our patron, and Mother St. John Fontbonne keep each of you in their loving care.

Congratulations to all of our winter sports teams — basketball, soccer, and water polo,

who qualified for the CIF Playoffs. The basketball team this

year won their First League Championship in 25 years. The Jesters advanced to the CIF Quarter-Finals in Division 3A. Freshman Point Guard Stefanie Berberabe, senior Guard Dominique Culhno and junior Forward Brianna Espinoza led the team. With only one senior on this year’s team, the Jesters are looking for great things to come next season. Great job on winning the League Championship!

The soccer team battled to the end in trying to capture a part of the Del Rey League Championship. They took 2nd place in a tough league, and lost in the 1st round of the CIF playoffs. Juniors Savannah DeMelo, Jessica Johnson, Emilia Mariolis, and seniors Bianca Lozano, Marlene Palafox, and goalie Jasmine Valadez led the team.

The water polo team advanced to the playoffs for only the second time in school history. They defeated Pasadena in the wild card game to advance to play the eventual CIF Champion Royal High School. The Jesters won the Diamond Bar Classic Tournament and made history by winning the first tournament in the water polo’s team’s history. Junior Emma Noble and seniors Felicia dePalma and Sophia Herrera led the Jesters. It was an awesome season for our water polo team.

musicals. For fun, we limited the alumnae to songs that were not produced while they were students, causing them to stretch to learn something new. It was great to see many songs we knew re-imagined by other performers.

The Show Choir heads to Orlando this spring break to compete in the Heritage Festival. The choir is working on its choreography and voices to wow the judges. The spring concert, set for April 17, will feature a medley from Wicked and other Broadway favorites.

The Theatre Program prepares The Ash Girl for its April 24 premiere. This theatrical retelling of the Cinderella story includes Ash Girl, her stepmother, and the classic Fairy. The play also explores darker areas of this global fairy tale by inhabiting the woods between the Ash Girl’s home and the ball with the Seven Deadly Sins. Join us April 24 through May 2 for this amazing piece of theatre.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC, January 28, 2015) — The ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, January 29, was Monica Hernandez. The 15-year-old SJHS sophomore volunteers as a teacher at St. Barnabas Church. She hopes to impart one lesson to her students: give back and help others.

“I just like to help people a lot. Since I don’t really have any younger siblings, I kind of use that (teaching) as a way to substitute for it,” Monica said.

She also spends time volunteering for the Friends of Lakewood Library and Long Beach Memorial Hospital. She plans to become a family psychologist in the future.

“I would like to help a lot of families because so many situations and so many scenarios are always happening. It always leads to bad futures, and I just want everyone to have a good future.”

A Cool Kid is someone who gives back to the community from his or her heart. Youth are chosen through an online nomination process. Once selected, they are interviewed and then featured on a live broadcast.

Sophomore Riley Rojas, the daughter of Cherry-Marie Rojas of Cypress, was selected to be a Secretariat for the YMCA's Model United Nations Program for the State of California. She was one of 80 chosen from the hundreds who applied, statewide.

The YMCA Youth and Government Program (YGP) offers the opportunity. The YGP was established in 1948 to build value-based leadership and civic engagement in California’s youth in order to strengthen our democracy. The Model United Nations Program was added in 2001.

The Secretariat Program is an intensive leadership development opportunity during which Secretariats assist with the planning of the Model United Nations (MUN) program. During MUN, middle school students discuss international issues, discover other cultures, develop life-enhancing skills, and make new friends. As a Secretariat, Riley will be a member of a mentor group that provides training for younger participants. Her responsibilities will

include teaching delegates how to research international topics, create resolution for change, and resolve conflicts. Riley will attend MUN conferences throughout the State of California over a four-month period.

Riley was chosen after conference delegates in Fresno reviewed applications and interviewed candidates. Riley was the only Secretariat to have ever been selected from the Long Beach delegation.

“As a Secretariat, I want to inspire others who have inspired me. Knowledge is power, and I hope to share that with future generations,” she said.

For many years, she has pursued her passion and interest in government not only by being involved in ASB and the Ambassador program at Saint Joseph’s, but also by being part of the YGP for the last two years. The YGP awarded her a scholarship to participate.

Jessica “J’Chelle” Magbitang Healy ’02

Jessica “J’Chelle” Magbitang Healy ’02 is a professional recording artist, actress, and the music director of JEMA Star Entertainment, a private music school she founded in Cerritos. She has a background in classical music and over 10 years of experience in the entertainment industry. Her first CD is coming out this month.

In 2006, J’Chelle’s professional career took off. She was featured on television shows such as America's Got Talent (NBC), My Own (MTV), and Nip Tuck (FOX/FX). She served as a keyboardist and vocalist for Mario Vasquez on American Idol (FOX); he was promoting his debut album. She also provided back-up for him on The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS) and during Vasquez’s AOL sessions.

By 2007, she appeared on shows showcasing her talent. She was the featured vocalist on The Singing Bee (NBC), under the music direction of

Ray Chew, whom she would again work with on American Idol, seasons 11 and 12.

“I credit Mr. Bozanich (SJHS Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator) for getting me into this business,” J’Chelle said. “He gave me my first audition ever. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

She also had a recent SJHS debut. It was on a chilly winter night a few weeks ago when she sang The Star Spangled Banner to kick-off the annual SJHS Powder Puff game. Many people had emotional responses to the music.

“I was in tears,” Dr. Terri Mendoza ’73, SJHS Principal said.

“Me too,” said Karen Kravitz Castillo ’80, Assistant Principal for Student Life.

In fact, the whole press box was in tears.

That night, J’Chelle also brought with her several family members: her 16-month old daughter, her husband, her mother, and her aunt.

Wendy Livingston, Science Teacher,

reports that her Honors Biology students have begun a long-term Mendelian genetics experiment using special “FAST Plant” mustard seeds from NASA, the kind used to grow plants on space missions. The students have cross-pollinated the plants using “bee sticks.” Next, they will harvest the seeds and replant them in January and again in March. The students will analyze the results of their crosses by applying the concepts of genetics.

Maureen Sullivan, Science Department Chair and photographic artist, had the honor of getting one of her photographic images printed on the cover of the inflight magazine for Bangkok Airlines. The magazine is produced by Ink, a British firm. The cover is pictured above.
