Making ConnectionsCatholic Social Teaching has been termed “a hidden treasure” by

some and the Catholic Church’s “best kept secret” by others. At

St. Mary’s, we strive to make it a secret no longer. We present

extra and co-curricular activities to promote students’ growing

understanding of and participation in social action. Members of

the Scholar Service Institute have undertaken Tolerance Training

at the Holocaust Museum and Educational Center in Glen Cove

as well as Leadership Seminars such as the one offered to our

students at Molloy College in Rockville Centre.

St. Mary’s does not stop there. We assist our students in making

connections between Catholic social teachings and what they

learn in each of their classes. Last year, the curriculum in freshman

year in each subject was revised to include a project on one of

the Catholic core social values. For example, in freshman English

classes, after having studied works exploring racism and

prejudice in its many forms, students completed an activity

related to “walking in another’s shoes.” In Social Studies, students

created brochures about the belief systems of a particular

civilization.

This year, sophomores will receive reinforcement of those

teachings while adding the concepts of solidarity and the

promotion of peace and disarmament. For example, Science

classes will examine atomic nuclear power and its possibilities for

addressing the pollution problem. In Mathematics, students will

study statistics related to global warming. Next year, the juniors

will add the topics of rights and responsibilities and specifically,

the dignity of work and the rights of workers. In 2009-2010, the

seniors will consider the preferential option for the poor, the call

to family, the role of government and the principle of subsidiarity

as areas of focus. It is our hope that knowledge of the principles of

Catholic social teaching will inform our young peoples’ choices of

career and future choices to act for justice as adults.

Many of these Catholic concerns are shared by all people of

goodwill and there are ways that we can act together to foster

peace and understanding. Since we are blessed at St. Mary’s to

have a diverse student population, we have a tremendous

opportunity to incarnate these principles through all of our

activities, academics and co-curricular and extra-curricular

activities. By doing so, we build the St. Mary’s community and

carry its spirit into our local communities.

PRINCIPLES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING “If you want peace, work for justice.” Pope Paul VI

THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON All are made in the image and likeness of God and have inherent

worth and dignity.

COMMUNITY AND THE COMMON GOOD This is about creating social conditions in which people can

realize their full potential and touches on issues such as respect

for life, social well-being, development, peace and security.

CARE FOR GOD’S CREATION As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to protect its people

and the planet.

SOLIDARITY We are one human family and need to work for justice locally

and globally.

PROMOTION OF PEACE AND DISARMAMENT Peace is the fruit of justice.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The most fundamental right is the right to life and, with it, comes

responsibilities. We have a right and a duty to participate in

decisions that affect our lives.

THE DIGNITY OF WORK AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS The economy is to serve people. We have a right to: decent,

productive work; fair wages; private property; and the

ability to participate in economic initiatives.

This month marks the end of my term as President of the Alumni Association. I am

honored to have been able to serve our alma mater and I again exhort my fellow alumni

to continue to support St. Mary’s High School for all that it has done for us and for all that

it will do for a new generation of youth from Long Island and Queens.

All the best,

sports night 2008Coming Home Againfor the 50th Anniversary of Sports Night

On Friday, March 7, 2008 Alumnae from

1958 through 2007 gathered for what

proved to be an incredible tribute to

Saint Mary’s High School in celebration

of the 50th Anniversary of Sports Night.

For those who could not attend, words

can only describe the high energy

that lit up the Br. Kenneth Robert

Gymnasium that Friday evening. Over

240 women came home that night

to St. Mary’s to celebrate something

phenomenal.

Sports Night, whether you knew it

or not at the time, was a gift given to

Juniors and Seniors at the high school.

Who knew that the hours spent years

ago designing costumes, murals, and

choreographing dance routines would

continue to provide endless possibilities

and opportunities as women with

families and or careers.

The spirit, leadership and team building

that comes from this experience is

something to carry with you for the rest

of your life.

Whether you were for the blue or white

team, you were all winners. Good show

ladies, good show!

And yes, congratulations blue!

by Eileen T. McMahon

Senior Holly tao (‘08) is a modern

version of a Renaissance person -

someone interested, involved and

accomplished in several fields. For four

years, Holly has served as captain of

the Mock Trial Team. Since she hopes

to pursue a legal career, the practice

preparing the prosecution and defense

sides of cases has been invaluable.

Membership in the Junior and Senior

Shepherds and participation in their

retreats have been very meaningful

to her, opening her up to others and

helping her to get to know everyone. It

confirmed in her own mind that she had

a purpose in choosing Saint Mary’s.

Holly founded the Model U.N. Club at

St. Mary’s as a Scholar Service Institute

project. Model U.N. is a venue in which

the students focus on international issues

and practice public speaking, debate,

cooperation and negotiation. In January,

the team went to Yale University for a four-

day conference. Holly served on a small

committee tackling the issue of terrorism.

She found it “enlightening” to realize just

how difficult it is to come to an agreement

on a serious issue like that.

In the summer of 2007, Holly took a course

in international law at Harvard which

was eye-opening. She met people from

around the country and from around the

world. Students shared their lives, hopes

and opinions on a variety of topics. In

grades 11 and 12, Holly served as Editor-

in-Chief of The Magnificat. What is the

secret to doing so many things well? Holly

said that she really wanted to participate

in each activity that she did; it wasn’t just

because it would look impressive on her

resume. Noting that her extra-curricular

involvements were an integral part

of her education, she responded,

“You just have to have a passion for

everything.”

Holly will be attending Georgetown

University in the Fall.

daniel rivera (’09) is a member

of the Scholar Service Institute and

of the National Honor Society. This

Easter vacation, he traveled to West

Virginia with Mr. Gschlecht and about

a dozen students to participate in

Project Rebuild. Daniel found it the

“most fun” of any service project he

had done to date and was pleased to

be able to help those less fortunate

than himself. A woman in her sixties

had suffered a fire in her trailer and the

Project Rebuild team replaced

the floor.

In January, Dan was a student leader

and facilitator on Freshmen Spirit Day.

“The freshmen were more open to

learning about tolerance than I had

expected,” he reported. The SSI field

trip to the Holocaust Museum and

the day-long workshop there on that

topic were a most helpful preparation

for facilitating discussion with the

freshmen on their life experiences of

tolerance.

In the past, Dan ran Spring Track for

two years. He looks forward to being

a counselor at Freshmen Camp and

hopes to be chosen as a peer group leader

next year. After high school, Dan intends

to pursue a career in civil engineering.

On Thursday evening, April 24, 2008, Saint

Mary’s College Preparatory High School

Alumni Association held its Third

Annual Hall of Fame Induction and

Alumni Spring Reception at the New

York Athletic Club in Manhattan. This

year’s inductees included Rev. Msgr.

John J. McCann ’57, Pastor of St. Mary’s

Parish; Rev. Msgr. John J. Skelly, Pastor

Emeritus of St. Mary’s; Mrs. Nancy

Alexander, a member of the prestigious

New York law firm Kramer Levin, Past

President of St. Mary’s Elementary

Parent’s Council and Past President of

the Gael’s Association; Mrs. Alice Evans,

President of the Gael’s Association and

member of the newly formed High

School Board; Mr. Daniel Nolan a Senior

Vice President in Wealth Management

for Smith Barney and Past President of

St. Mary’s School Board; and last but not

least, Mr. Arthur J. Schultheiss, a retired

private investigator and past School

Board President.

Over 150 friends, family and alumni

traveled into New York City on this

glorious April evening with the ever-

present scent of an unfolding spring

in the air and the flowers beginning to

bloom, to pay fitting tribute to our six

inductees, men and women who have

given so much of themselves, their

talents, and their time to further the

mission of St. Mary’s High School. Dr.

Kevin McBride, Principal, couldn’t have

said it better with his observation, “The

past, present or future contributions of

the honorees, whether being called upon

by associations, or parish educational

ministries has been and continues to

be strategic to the ministry of Catholic

secondary education as a whole. We are

deeply grateful for their efforts on behalf of

our students.”

The Induction and Alumni Spring

Reception began at 6:00 PM with a

splendid indoor/outdoor cocktail

hour, and the weather was brilliant!

The stately setting of the New York

Athletic Club on Central Park South set

the tone for an evening of renewing

old friendships and of paying fitting

tribute to our honorees. The formal

induction took place in a magnificent

room overlooking Central Park, a

breathtaking view indeed! Mr. Frank

Coughlin, Jr., ’73, President of the St.

Third Annual Hall of FameContinued from page 7.

and our emcee for the evening began with

a brief welcome and conferred the honor

of Hall of Fame Member on each of our

honorees.

The first two honorees were the present and

past Pastors of the Church of St. Mary, Msgr.

John J. McCann ’57 and Msgr. John J. Skelly.

Msgr. McCann, the Pastor, spoke of his days

as a student at St. Mary’s in the late 1950s,

and the valuable formation he received

from the Marist Brothers and the staff of

the school. This greatly prepared him for a

lifetime of service to God’s people as a priest

in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Msgr.

Skelly who served as Pastor of St. Mary’s

from 1987-1998, followed Msgr. McCann

and spoke briefly about his days as Pastor

of St. Mary’s and the change he initiated by

making two separate entities into one co-

educational high school. This successfully

continues today with its mission of Catholic

education.

Alice Evans, Nancy Alexander, Dan Nolan

and Arthur Schultheiss were next inducted

into the Hall of Fame, and each spoke briefly

upon receiving this honor. A common

thread amongst all our honorees was their

gratitude for the great job St. Mary’s High

School has done and continues to do

toward the formation of young men and

women in their Catholic faith, and in those

areas of education which will enable them to

go on to college and to excel in life. Nancy

Alexander made the point well by referring

to the education her two sons received “they

were challenged—academically, spiritually,

emotionally and yes, even athletically---and

they thrived. When they graduated, they

were fully-prepared for the rigors of college.

But of course, that’s what parents expect of a

school—and to a greater or lesser extent, that’s

what all schools do.”

Dan Nolan, Alice Evans, and Arthur

Schultheiss built on this theme and all were

most grateful and thankful for the superb

job St. Mary’s did for their children when

they attended the school and for the job

St. Mary’s continues to do for the present

student body. “During these troubled times,

there is nothing more important than the job

the high school does for our young people, and

the school deserves an A++ for its effort,” said

Dan Nolan. This indeed would sum up the

basic thrust and feeling of those who were

honored, and of all those present.

After the formal program was finished, the

festivities continued as all in attendance

basked in the joy of this night, a very special

evening to honor six people who have

truly made a difference in the lives of past,

present and, indeed, future students of Saint

Mary’s College Preparatory High School.

Model U.N.Seven St. Mary’s students traveled to Yale

University January 24-27 to participate

in a Model U.N. Conference where they

discussed issues of concern to the world

community, including pandemics and

the search for renewable resources.

Participants were able to suggest solutions

to problems and were afforded the

opportunity to meet

students from all

over the globe. The

Model U.N. Club,

which simulates

the workings of

the actual U.N., is

part of a worldwide

organization which

promotes respect

for the perspectives

and opinions of

other cultures and

which believes

understanding will

assist in solving

problems with

global implications.

Spirit DayOn January 25th, the entire freshmen

class participated in the second annual

Spirit Day which focused on the themes

of tolerance, the dignity of each person,

and involvement in social justice. After

initial ice-breaking activities, the students

were divided into small groups facilitated

by juniors and seniors and overseen by

faculty members. A special lunch with

foods from a variety of ethnic and racial

backgrounds emphasized the tolerance

and respect themes. A montage of film

clips provoked discussion on a number of

themes pertaining to how to confront or

cope with injustice. Eventually, each small

group created a video voicing concern

about the genocide in Darfur; all were

posted on 24hoursfordarfur.org. A day like

this challenges all to incorporate the social

teachings of Jesus into our lives.

The Scholar Service InstituteForty-five members of the Class of 2011

at St. Mary’s College Preparatory High

School were inducted into the Scholar

Service Institute on Monday, March 10th

in a ceremony held after school. This is

the largest number ever to be admitted

at one time since the program began in

2002. Students must attain a cumulative

weighted average of 95% or above in

order to qualify for admission. Dr. Kevin

McBride addressed the new Scholars,

congratulating them on their academic

achievements and on their willingness

to serve others through their individual,

annual projects. Eileen T. McMahon,

Chairwoman of the Scholar Service

Institute, distributed a service pin to each

new recruit as a sign of their

commitment to use their gifts to benefit

the school, local community, and world.

Two members of the Class of 2008, Michael

Sheer and Alexis Astrinidis, were on hand

to welcome the underclasspersons and to

encourage them to persevere.

The National Honor Society Induction

On May 22nd,

approximately eighty

sophomores and

twenty juniors joined

the 225 juniors and

seniors who are

already members

of the St. Mary’s St.

Thomas More Chapter

of the National

Honor Society, a

nationally-recognized

organization

that encourages

scholarship, character,

leadership and

service. While

maintaining honors

level grades, members must perform

community service such as tutoring,

visiting nursing homes, staffing soup

kitchens and teaching in Faith Formation

programs in their home parishes. This

is just one more way students are

encouraged to live out the Gospel

mandate to go forth and serve

others. The NHS members do all of this

while participating in a number of clubs,

programs, sports or Campus Ministry

activities at St. Mary’s along with

juggling work and other demands on

their time.

Living Stations of the CrossTwenty-three students involved

in Campus Ministry presented a

tableau version of the Stations

of the Cross in four sessions,

one for each grade level, on the

Monday and Tuesday of Holy

Week. Each station was

introduced by a narrator; then,

one member of the cast would

step forward to provide further

reflection upon the station’s

theme either in word or in

song. Under the direction of

Mr. Larry Kupferman, a religion

teacher, seniors Megan Tobin (Mary) and

John Dietz (Jesus), together with a talented

group of students, provided a moving way

to enter into the Paschal Mystery.

Campus MinistryThe spiritual dimension of St. Mary’s is

clearly thriving this year. A record number

of students have been volunteering in the

afterschool outreach programs such as:

tutoring in a grant-sponsored aftercare

program; visiting infirm religious at Queen

of the Rosary Convent in Amityville;

playing Bingo with residents of a local

senior residence; and assisting in a soup

kitchen on Saturdays. Retreats, Days

of Reflection and a variety of liturgies

continue to nourish both students and

faculty. Students are welcome to relax

in the Campus Ministry room before and

after school or during lunch. This is a more

informal way of building community.

AthleticsThe Freshmen Boys’ Basketball team,

coached by Danny Kiernan and Ira Hunt,

had a spectacular season, winning the

Catholic League title in a hard-fought

victory over Chaminade. The team showed

great poise, hustle and determination in

going undefeated in league play for the

first time in six years. The future looks

promising for the Boys’ Varsity Team

with two sophomores Chaz Morrish and

Dondre Jackson playing there is great

chemistry, team work and work ethic

exhibited by team members. Coached by

first-year coach Bill Harkins and Chris Kelly,

the team featured all-league Nat Vaughan

and Jerrell Lawrence, who averaged 17

points and 7 rebounds per game.

The Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team had

a breakout season with its best league

record in many years. Led by Coach Tom

Flynn (in his second year), and all-league

players Shannon Flynn and Sarah Kluth,

both sophomores, the team hustled and

improved. As a young team, much is

expected of them next year.

Boys’ Varsity Soccer, coached by Robert

Sventora, and Girls’ Varsity Volleyball,

coached by Ellyn Hausdorf, won the

Sportsmanship Awards, and were recognized

by the league for their great play and attitude.

Matthew Elliott’s Shamokin!!!General Music and Chorus teacher

Matthew Elliott has just released a new

album with his quartet called Shamokin!!!

on his own Hot Cup Records label. A

world-renowned jazz recording artist,

Mr. Elliott apprenticed in jazz clubs

and concert halls in Cleveland under

the tutelage of jazz legends like Robin

Eubanks, Greg Bandy, Ira Sullivan and Ernie

Krivda. His quartet, Mostly

Other People Do the Killing, has

garnered extensive critical

acclaim both domestically

and abroad and has been

called “the future of Jazz.”

Shamokin!!! has been included

on over one dozen critics’

“Top Ten Albums of 2007”

lists. Mr. Elliott is working on

the group’s third album, and

producing the debut album

for a group called Puttin’ on

the Ritz, and is performing

with the elastic hybrid

chamber-pop ensemble Alice.

Ms. Saavedra Becomes a U.S. CitizenOn February 6th, Ms. Angella Saavedra

became a United States citizen. A native

of Peru, Ms. Saavedra is a graduate of

St. John’s University and has been on

our faculty since September 2005. Mr.

Richard Hoppenhauer, Chairman of the

Foreign Language Department reports,

“She has been an outstanding asset to the

Foreign Language Department, sharing

her expertise in communication skills with

the children entrusted to her.” Presently,

Ms. Saavedra is pursuing a Master’s degree

in Spanish and Secondary Education at

Molloy College. She was applauded at the

March faculty meeting and presented with

a bouquet of flowers to congratulate her.

Project RebuildThis February break, ten to fifteen St.

Mary’s High School students traveled with

Mr. Vincent Gschlecht of the Guidance

Department to Webster Springs, West

Virginia, for an outreach activity called

Project Rebuild. Webster Springs lies in the

poorest county in West Virginia where the

median income level is $9,000 per year.

Project Rebuild is a week-long program

providing home repairs and cleanup. In our

fourteenth year of participation, the Project

Rebuild volunteers laid floors, built a roof

the experience “very inspirational,” and she

was pleased at how the group worked so

well together. In addition, she was glad for

their friendly interactions with the people

whom they assisted. Evening sharing and

group prayer helped the students process

this experience, one designed to engender

a sense of service in each participant.

School Trips to Italy, Switzerland and SpainTwenty-five lucky St. Mary’s students had

the opportunity to travel to Switzerland

and Italy during the February break.

Students began their journey in the

lakeside town of Lucerne. A cable car ride

to the summit of Mt. Pilatus provided them

with a spectacular view of Switzerland

from an altitude of 7,000 feet. Stops in Italy

included Venice, Florence, Assisi, Verona,

Pisa and Rome, giving the group a chance

to observe geographical, cultural and

linguistic differences as well as to develop

an appreciation for the art and architecture

of these regions.

Spring break saw twenty-eight St. Mary’s

juniors and seniors travelling in northern

Spain with Ms. Jennifer Ferraiuolo, Mr. Larry

Kupferman and Mr. Carlo Puca. Starting

in Madrid, the tour visited eight cities in

Spain and on Easter, crossed the border

into France to visit Lourdes, the site of a

Marian apparition to St. Bernadette. While

the weather brought cold and rain midway

through the trip, nothing could cloud the

positive experience for the adventurous

Gaels. The students sampled tapas in

every city, saw a Holy Thursday procession,

sang karaoke in one of Madrid’s oldest

mesones and even traversed the path

where the bulls run annually in Pamplona.

Many students spoke of returning to Spain

to study abroad in college; they were

definitely bitten by the travel bug.

St. Mary’s Summer CampsSt. Mary’s provides the perfect place for

our students to learn from experienced

coaches and educators in a safe, positive

and fun learning environment at a variety

of summer camps. The new state-of-

the-art turf field can be used for lacrosse,

soccer and softball. There are also three

separate gymnasiums for basketball and

volleyball use. Campers dine in either of

the two school cafeterias. From June 30th

to July 14th, Lacrosse Camp will occur.

We have a separate Basketball Camp

running from June 30th until July 4th. Kids

All-Sports Camp is being offered in two

sessions: July 7th to July 11th (Session

1) and July 21st to July 25th (Session 2).

Two weeks of Soccer Camp are being

added this year: July 14 through July

18th (Session 1) and August 4th through

August 8th (Session 2). Look for the camps’

brochure on our website at www.stmary.

Magnificat Staff Recognized at Quill AwardsThe Magnificat staff was proud to count

themselves among the winners at this

year’s Quill Awards at Adelphi University’s

annual Press Day on March 4th. Held at

the university’s Garden City campus, the

awards ceremony involved high school

journalists from over thirty-three Long

Island high schools. Participants listened

to a panel discussion on war, politics and

the media. Afterward, the Quill Awards

were presented in twelve categories.

Senior Holly Tao, Editor-in-Chief of the

Magnificat, was awarded second place in

Best Editorial for her Issue I piece, “Religion

is Dead.” Opinions Editor, Brittany Natale,

achieved second place in Best Feature

for her spotlight on senior Terence Cullen

which was published in the October 2007

issue.

Mock TrialNine members of the Mock Trial Club,

under the direction of Mrs. Kathleen

Spellman and Mr. Tyler Bogart, advanced

to round sixteen of the Nassau Mock Trial

Competition run from February through

April after defeating Herricks High School.

The club actually began preparing in

October, working many afternoons to

get ready. Participants are given both

sides of a case to prepare; in this civil case

involving a hit and run, they had affidavits

and precedents for both the defense and

the plaintiff. The actual competition is held

at the Nassau County Supreme Court in

Mineola where three students, Grace Chao,

Holly Tao, and Tyheisha Roach, served as

lawyers and the other team members,

as witnesses. “We had a really good

team chemistry,” reported Ms. Chao who,

while not having any legal aspirations,

appreciates the way Mock Trial expands

“skills anyone can use” such as public

speaking, problem-solving, persuasion and

thinking on the spot.

Bishop Murphy VisitsBishop William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville

Centre, spent the morning of April 7th

visiting with St. Mary’s students. During

breakfast with the seniors, Bishop Murphy

exhorted them to “use their hearts” going

forward in life. After breakfast, he found

time to meet with the Senior Shepherds

who conduct retreats and with Project

Rebuild participants who donate a full

week to assisting those in need in one of

the poorest areas in the United States.

Mr. Mangiacapre on the WebMr. Anthony Mangiacapre was selected

to give a workshop on physics animations

and simulations at the Spring conference

of the Long Island Physics Association.

On Thursday, May 8, 2008 Saint Mary’s

College Preparatory High School

officially paid tribute to one of its finest

alumni. The Timothy J. Coughlin ’76

Memorial Scoreboard was unveiled

before family and friends at the start of

the boys varsity lacrosse game against

Chaminade. Tragically, Tim was killed

September 11, 2001 during the terrorists’

attack on the World Trade Center in

New York.

Monsignor John J. McCann ‘57 began

the ceremony reflecting on the

Coughlin Family and the important

role they have played at Saint Mary’s

for so many years. Tim’s brother, Frank

Coughlin Jr. ’73 then spoke about how

important Saint Mary’s was in Tim’s life,

helping to form a gentleman with a

strong Catholic faith. Tim may not have

been the most athletic player on the

field, but he was the fiercest one. Tim

was a tenacious competitor who never

backed down. He was captain and

MVP his senior year in Basketball and

Lacrosse. He later went on to become

one of Wall Street’s most

successful bond traders.

Survived by his wife, Maura and their

three children, Ryann, Sean and Riley,

Timothy John Coughlin will always

be remembered by Saint Mary’s

High School.

This year marked 50 years of service for Br.

Kenneth Robert, FMS. The word “service”,

however, doesn’t even begin to describe

the value Br. Kenneth has been to Saint

Mary’s. Born April 16, 1933 in the small

Maine town of Fort Kent located on the

border with Canada, Br. Kenneth came to

Saint Mary’s in 1958.

Over the years he has taught Religion,

History, French and Social Studies. From

1969 until 1993, he was a member of the

Guidance Department. In addition to his

guidance responsibilities, he served as the

Athletic Director from 1970 until 2000. He

is currently the Assistant Athletic Director.

Br. Kenneth is affectionately known as the

“father” of Saint Mary’s Ice Hockey Team.

Having brought hockey to Saint Mary’s,

he is credited with creating the very

successful program that has garnered so

many State Championship titles.

But, to really understand the impact one

person can have you don’t have to look

very far. Br. Kenneth’s passion has always

been the students. Whether it be the

students at Saint Mary’s or those attending

Camp Marist in the summer, Br. Kenneth

always has the students’ best interests

worked into the equation.

There is a quote from a letter that was

written to Br. Kenneth a few years back

from Major Patrick Macklin, a graduate

from the Class of 1984, who at the time

was serving in Iraq that truly sums up how

most people feel about Br. Kenneth. He

wrote “Br. Kenneth, I want to thank you for

believing in me when I was a young man at

St. Mary’s High School. My four years at St.

Mary’s were memorable because I looked

forward everyday to spending time with you.

Brother, you were my pillar of strength. I could

always count on you to give me guidance

and keep me in line. You were always there

when I needed you, offering sound advice or

a friend to talk to.” What better testament

to a life of dedicated service could there

be than that? Br. Kenneth has been a

champion colleague, mentor and most

importantly, a family member of Saint

Mary’s for 50 years and for that we

thank him.

Br. John graduated Saint Mary’s Boys’

High School in 1965 where he was class

valedictorian. He was a member of the

track team, Student Council, Spanish and

Math Clubs as well as a member of the

Magnificat staff. He credits his vocation to

the good example set forth by the Marist

Brothers who taught at Saint Mary’s. Their

passion for caring for the whole student

was a big reason for him choosing to join

the Marist Brothers in 1965.

In September 1965, he became a postulant

in Esopus and received his Marist habit

in 1966. After professing his first vows

on August 15, 1967 in Esopus, Brother

John moved to the scholasticate at Marist

University. Brother John also received

a research grant from the Rockefeller

Foundation that funded his doctoral

dissertation.

Returning to Archbishop Molloy during the

summer of 1980, Brother John served as

Assistant Principal for Academics until 1986

and then as Principal until 1992.

During 1986-87, Brother John was able

to study School Administration at Boston

College. He participated in the Second

Novitiate Renewal in Nemi, Italy in the

spring of 1991. He was elected Provincial

of the Esopus Province in 1992 and served

two-three year terms. While Provincial,

Br. John was elected President of the

Conference of Major Superiors of Men

(CMSM). Completing his provincialate, Br.

John participated in a year of renewal at

Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY and is the

President of the Board of

Legal Resource Center for Religious in

Washington, DC.

Internationally, Brother John was an Esopus

Province delegate to the 1993 Marist Brothers

General Chapter in Rome. In 1997, Pope

John Paul II appointed him as an auditor and

presenter at the Synod of Bishops for America

in Rome.

On June 26, 2003, at Convocation ’03 in

Poughkeepsie, Br. John Klein began his

service of leadership as the first Provincial of

the Province of the United States of America.

In June 2006, he commenced his second term

as Provincial.

Today, Brother John proudly serves as

Chairperson of the newly formed Gaels

Society along with Sister Barbara Jablonski,

IHM ’59. The two Saint Mary’s Alumni work

together along with the other members of

the Gael’s Society to further advance the

mission of Saint Mary’s College Preparatory

High School. We are very proud to have them

serve on the board as they represent the

quality of student Saint Mary’s graduates

year after year.

The Inauguration of The Gaels SocietyOn September 27, 2007 Our Lady of Grace Retreat Center in Manhasset hosted the inaugural assembly of The Gaels Society for St. Mary’s College Preparatory High School. The most prestigious donor recognition organization serving St. Mary’s High School, The Gaels Society was inaugurated to advance the mission of the school and to promote the cycle of generosity. The Gaels Society was formed to honor individuals who have been especially generous through the years in their financial support of St. Mary’s High School. Benefactors whose lifetime giving to the school has surpassed $25,000 attain membership in one of the lifetime giving societies and are honored with special invitations to major school events. Society members also receive special recognition as an expression of the gratitude of all St. Mary’s constituencies for their support.

Glowing Re-Accreditation ReportAs it has done for over half a century, St. Mary’s

College Preparatory High School continues

to succeed in educating and developing the

entire person. In April of 2006, the Commission

on Secondary Schools of the Middle States

Association (CSS-MSA) reported that

“it is difficult to put into words how enthusiastic students were about the school and the commitment of its teachers to the students.” In its report,

the Commission noted that “As a Catholic school, a commitment to developing a sense of social values is at the core of the school’s mission” and that the school

“exceeds expectations in critical academic, social, safety, and moral areas.” The report

stated, “St. Mary’s is a healthy, vibrant school.

Its faculty conveys a sense of pride in the

collective mission and its students love their

teachers and feel as though school is one

big family.”

“As a Validation team, we are unanimously

convinced of the viability of the St. Mary’s High

School Plan,” noted the Middle States Report.

“You have taken the time to plan thoughtfully

and carefully and have done a wonderful job.

‘Some day, after mastering the winds, the

waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness

for God the energies of love and then, for the

second time in the history of the world, man

will have discovered fire.’ We believe that your

ideas at St. Mary’s are dynamic and challenging,

and your success will be like discovering fire.”

from the gaels parents’ association

by Alice Evans

“School Boards serve as collaborative

partners with the pastor and principal

in furthering the educational ministry

of the Church. Their mission is clear

in their promoting the purpose of a

Christian education which is “to provide

an atmosphere in which the Gospel

is proclaimed, community in Christ is

experienced, service to our sisters and

brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and

worship of our God is cultivated.”

(USCCB, 2005)

The above statement, as prepared

by Joanne O’Brien, Ed. D., Associate

Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese

of Rockville Centre, helps describe the

uniqueness of Saint Mary’s High School.

For many years, there has existed a

School Board at St. Mary’s comprised of

both high school and elementary school

stakeholders, with the majority of its

members, of its time and of its resources

directed toward the elementary school. A

Parish school, not a private school; a part

of the diocese, yet not a diocesan school;

our high school is a hybrid of sorts, and

the elementary connection contributes to

a feeling of safety and family in which our

adolescent children thrive. But it is with

the support of our pastor, Monsignor John

McCann, our principal, Dr. McBride, and

educators like Dr. O’Brien, that a new,

separate Saint Mary’s High School board

was formed this school year.

This new board is made up of

administrators, parents, alumni and

development directors. In December,

Dr. O’Brien met with the board to show

her encouragement, commending

the school on its glowing Middle States

Association report of the Accreditation

for Growth. Dr. O’Brien states in reference

to the statement above: “St. Mary’s

Middle States’ report clearly praises St.

Mary’s in fulfilling this fourfold mission. In

representing constituent groups of the

community, School Board members are able

to give feedback to the pastor and principal

as to how the greater community perceives

the school’s strengths and areas of concern.

My favorite definition of a good school

is one that is continually improving. An

effective School Board ensures the ongoing

improvement of a school’s educational

program and co-curricular activities to meet

the diverse needs of the student body.”

With appreciation to Dr. O’Brien, and a

look to the Middle States and Changing

Our World report recommendations, the

board has set goals.

We ask you, the alumni, to join us in a

new beginning. Give your Alma Mater

consideration in terms of your time, and/

or talent and/or treasure so that we can

continue to improve.

Parents’ Association and a School

The Gaels Parents’ Association held its 12th

annual fundraiser March 13th at Leonard’s

of Great Neck. It was, as usual, a fun filled,

profitable evening.

As was noted in the last issue of the

Magnificat, it is our hope that you, the

alumnae, would join us in our effort to

raise money. This year the monies raised

went towards several new sections of

bleachers for Denihan Field and to add to

our ever increasing need for technology.

We anticipate, as the good word spreads,

that more and more of you will join us,

perhaps as a ‘mini’ reunion. At that time, we

anticipate allotting a portion of what we

raise for a “girl’s” specific need.

“This was the first event I attended for St.

Mary’s aside from reunions. I was happy to

participate in Ladies Night Out, both as an

Alum and local business owner. It was an

opportunity to revisit with administration

and faculty, as well as network. I encourage

more alumnae to attend next year’s event

otherwise you are missing out on a great

night of fabulous food, fun and great raffles!

Don’t wait for your class reunions to come

back to St. Mary’s.”

- dianne szwed ‘86 Co-Owner, Optical Heights Roslyn Heights

“What an incredible night! The ladies who ran

this event are to be commended for a job well

done! The turnout was a fantastic showing of

support for the High School. I was thrilled to

be there first-hand to view how wonderfully

these young men and women of St. Mary’s

presented themselves in the fashion show.

Plus you got to hear their accomplishments

and aspirations for the future as they strutted

down the runway. You need to be at this

event next year!”

- eileen symmons ‘86 Director of Communications, Church of Saint Mary

Please mark your calendars for Thursday,

March 19, 2009 and start now to make

plans with old friends. One night, once a

year, can help make the difference in the

lives of the students and teachers at Saint

Mary’s.

Sister M. Helaine O’Dea, IHM

On April 17, 2008 Saint Mary’s lost a beloved friend, Sister M. Helaine O’Dea, IHM. Sister Helaine joined the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1935 and made her final vows in 1940. She was an educator who served many schools from Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York. Sister Helaine was a teacher at St. Mary’s Elementary School from 1948 to 1954. She also served as a secretary for St. Mary’s High School from 1984 to 1999. Sister Helaine lived in the Sister’s Residence at St. Mary’s and could always be seen around St. Mary’s offering a warm smile a gracious “Hello”. She will be missed dearly by all of us whose lives were touched by her presence at St. Mary’s.

The National Catholic Education Association Report on Catholic High Schools

Who among us had not been the beneficiary of generosity from the generation before us? Our responsibility is to be generous to the

next generation. It is a way of giving thanks to God for all that has been given to us. Now that you are behind the scenes, we invite you

to let God work through you and support St. Mary’s students in their journey to answer Jesus’ call selflessly in all that they do.
