2028...is the year that my daughter Isla and the other Year 1s will gradu- ate College (assuming they stay until Year 13). Scary...I thought so! What will our world look like in the year 2028? What jobs and career pathways will there be for young people emerging into the adult world? It is highly likely that a lot of the jobs they (Isla and her contemporaries), will enter into do not even exist today! How then can we educate the children of today for their future tomorrow? These are questions that myself, along with Ngaire Harris of Hauraki Plains College and many of the other contrib- uting school principals are grappling with. Collectively we are hoping to work together to begin to prepare an answer to this and the hundreds of related questions that will evolve from it. One things seems to be certain. It will be thinking and learning skills (combined with foundation knowledge), as opposed to straight knowledge, that the students of tomorrow (and actually today) need to be successful. We live in a time of significant educational change, with schools exploring flexible learning spaces, large learning groups with multiple teachers, and the influence of technology. At Kaihere School, we believe that a significant first step towards future thinking educational practices is that students are helped to be aware of their learning journey, where they sit on that journey, and where to go to next on their journey to self-improvement. Building student self-awareness of successful learning skills, goal setting, time management, collaboration and communication with others and through a variety of mediums are just some of the skills that we hope that our students leave Kaihere School with as they continue their educational journey at College. At yesterdays National Young Leaders Day in Auckland (attended by myself, Simon Main and our Year 8s), we listened to a lot of motivational speakers. Although all the speakers had slightly different messages, one thing came though strongly from all of them: success comes from being self-aware and self-motivated. Creating a learning environment that fosters these attitudes within our students is clearly also a priority for meeting the needs of our students. All in all it is an exciting time to be in education, especially for those willing to embrace change with an open-mind.
