Thank you so much to the community for their turnout at school and community ANZAC commemorative services last weekend. We have been learning in school about the importance of remem- bering our history in war and why words like Lest We Forget are so important. It is so disturbing to watch global news and see things like chemical weapons use on civilians in Syria and the rise of anti-Semitism in middle class Germany again. HAVE THESE PEOPLE LEANT NOTHING! Thankfully I can say that we see a healthy respect in our students for the sacrifices made by New Zealand service- men and I feel that the future of our ANZAC traditions and services will remain strong. Now for a wee RANT! Last night 18 parents (from 15 families) came to a community meeting from a total of 31 families in the school. Should would say a 50% turn out is good...me, well I was pretty disappointed! Whilst I realise that some people couldn’t make it (and with genuine reason and apologies sent through), I have to say it is often the same people we see at school events, and the same people absent. Small rural school’s like ours are extremely reliant on the goodwill and shared efforts of their community. A good example is that we have no caretaker, and that jobs around the school are mostly taken care of by a few parents who volunteer. People like Jeremy who looks after the pool and mows the school lawns for free! The impact on the school is enormous. It means we do not have to divert funds from learning to pay for things like mowing and plumber’s or builder’s bills. Last night’s meeting was about giving the community a chance to become informed about the school and to have their say about future decision making in the school. As a parent I want to have my say about how things are run in my children’s school, so I am slightly mystified as to why half of you don’t seem to feel the same. Please feel free to correspond with me on this subject. My email is [email protected] or come in and see me for a chat PRINCIPAL’S PIECE (A.K.A.
