China-Pakistan corridor against India's strategic interestsBY JAI KUMAR VERMA

Older MPs declined in BJP, increased in CongressOLDER MPS DECLINED IN BJP, INCREASED

IN CONGRESS BY SNEHA ALEXANDER

The much touted $46 billion, 3,000-km-long China-Pakistan EconomicCorridor (CPEC) links Gwadar por t in the troubled state of Balochistanto China's restive autonomous region of Xinjiang. The project, whichis an extension of China's ambitious One-Belt-One-Road scheme, passes through Gilgit and Baltistan areas which are par t of Jammuand Kashmir which is Indian territory but illegally occupied by Paki-stan. Hence the CPEC is against India's geographical and strategicinterests.

The official Xinhua news agency, in a clear depar ture from its pastpractice, mentioned in December 2014 about the closure of theKhunjerab Pass and also stated that Gilgit and Baltistan were par ts ofPakistan. Analysts claim that China, before taking up a project of thismagnitude, wanted to reconfirm Gilgit-Baltistan as par t ofPakistanand wanted to observe India's reaction which was not severe at thatjuncture. China would be constructing several infrastructure and hy-dropower projects, industrial parks, railway lines and all-weatherroads and highways in Gilgit-Baltistan as well as in Pakistan-admin-istered Kashmir. CPEC will also reduce by 12,000 km the distancefrom Middle East from where China impor ts its crude oil.Pakistani leaders describe CPEC, as well as the multifarious projectslinked to it, as a great economic achievement for the country andclaim that it will solve the country's economic problems and expeditegrowth. Government agencies declare that more than 700,000 directjobs would be created. Nonetheless, the Pakistani leadership is wor-ried about generating funds for the main projects, which have to befinanced indigenously. The Economic Coordination Committee of thecabinet has set up a revolving fund to handle this, but analysts claimthat Pakistan's economic condition is in a shambles and it will bedifficult for the country to create funds for the construction of themega projects. There is severe criticism of the project by non-Punjabis as they feelthat although the CPEC passes through their areas, the benefits of theproject would be usurped by Punjabis. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistaniextremist outfit has already claimed the killing of some Chinese inPakistan. Several separatist outfits in Balochistan are against CPEC

and proclaim that it is against the interests of the state. They say theywould not allow this project to be implemented.Residents of Balochistan also mention that through the CPEC project, the government would settle outsiders in the province, thereby chang-ing the demography of the province, and the Chinese and the Punjabi-dominated federal government would exploit the natural resources ofthe state without giving it due compensation. Pakistan has allegedthat India is assisting Baloch and Sindhi militants who are creatinghurdles in the construction of CPEC. They allege that in May 2016, oneChinese worker was killed in Karachi by militants of an India-sup-por ted outfit. India has denied such charges. Both China and Pakistan claim that CPEC has only economic dimen-sions, but India and the United States appropriately feel that it hasmore strategic significance. Gwadar would be a future sea por t fromwhere China would acquire a stronghold in the Indian Ocean region.China would also get an access to the Arabian Sea and would mini-mize the distance to the Strait of Hormuz through which 35 percent ofworld oil transits. The linking of Muslim majority Xinjiang provincethrough CPEC would be dangerous for China too, as the Muslim fanat-ics of Pakistan would star t assisting the suppressed Muslims of theChinese province and the secessionist movement would be strength-ened. Pakistani Jihadists would cer tainly spread Islamic extremismin China.

India also feels that China has already encircled it by inculcatingcommercial as well as defence relationship with several countriesincluding Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldivesand Somalia. CPEC would fur ther strengthen the encirclement. Aftercompletion of the CPEC, the Chinese presence would enhance mani-fold in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, which would be detrimentalfor India. India needs to chalk out a long-term rational policy concern-ing CPEC -- nonetheless it will not be easy as the Indian public is veryemotional about its relations with Pakistan and China. As the project is against the interests of the country, India must op-pose it but it should not lead to open confrontation. Effor ts can bemade to discourage China from going ahead with this ambitious project, but it will not be an easy task. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in abilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines ofthe G20 summit (September 4-5, 2016 at Hangzhou in China), raisedthe CPEC issue.Besides its all-weather friendship with China, Pakistan is also incul-cating close relations with Russia. The closeness between Russiaand China is also increasing. Hence, the possibility of a China-Paki-stan-Russia axis cannot be ruled out and Indian policy makers mustkeep this aspect in mind. Besides, India's relationship with the UnitedStates is also growing at a fast pace and Russia may like to counterthis by inculcating closeness with China and Pakistan.

The number of Bharatiya Janata Par ty (BJP) members of parliament(MPs) in the current Lok Sabha above the age of 70 declined to 8.8 percent -- from 14.2 per cent in the 15th Lok Sabha -- and MPs aged 25 to40 increased from 5.8 per cent to 7.8 per cent, according to anIndiaSpend analysis of data released by PRS Legislative Research. The trend in the opposition Congress is the exact reverse of the BJP.The younger lot of MPs declined from 8.1 per cent to 6.7 per cent, andolder MPs increased from 11.9 per cent to 20 per cent. The average age of MPs has increased from 46.5 years during thefirst Lok Sabha (1952) to 56 years in the 16th Lok Sabha (2014 topresent). While the first Lok Sabha had 489 MPs, the current LokSabha has 545 MPs. The current Lok Sabha is the second oldesthouse of independent India; the first was the previous Lok Sabha(15th). Young India has most MPs aged 56-70. The youngest MP in thecurrent House is 28 years old, and the oldest MP is 88. The medianage of MPs is 58 -- half of the MPs are 58 years and above. In 2011,the median age of India was 24 years, IndiaSpend repor ted in Sep-tember 2016.MPs aged 56-70 years have the highest share of seats (44 per cent) inthe current Lok Sabha, while the demographic accounts for only 8 per

cent of the total population. Of India's population eligible to be elected,a four th are between 25 and 40 years old, but no more than 10 per centof MPs are from this age-group. Elderly (71-100) MPs occupy 9.6 percent of the seats, while their age-group makes up 2.4 per cent of thepopulation. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have younger MPs; MPs aged 41-55 best per formers.India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, has the highest shareof seats (70) in the Lok Sabha; 63 per cent of MPs that representthis state of 200 million are below the age of 56. Half the LokSabha MPs from Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu arebelow 56 years-younger than those from the remaining 13 statesthat have more than 15 seats in the Lok Sabha. UP and Bihar couldhave younger MPs as their populations are among India's young-est, with median ages of 20, against India's median age of 24.Kerala (20 MPs) does not have a single MP aged between 25 and40; 65 per cent are above the age of 55. Kerala has a compara-tively older population, with a median age of 31, which is, how-ever, low compared to ageing countries such as Japan, which hasa median age of 46.9.MPs Aged 41-55: Best Per formers In 16th Lok SabhaMPs between the ages of 41 and 55, on average, attended 81 percent of the sessions in the 16th Lok Sabha, and marked the high-est attendance. The oldest MPs scored the least, with 76.3 percent. Parliamentarians of the age-group 41-55 were the most ac-tive in the Lok Sabha, with the highest average of questions, par-ticipation in debates and introduction of private member bills. While an MP of the age-group 41-55 asked 168 questions, an MPfrom the oldest age-group asked only 91 questions. The leastactive parliamentarians are between 71 and 88 years old (theoldest); 34 per cent of such MPs have asked less than 10 ques-tions in the House. Nationalist Congress Par ty MP Supriya Sule,53, asked the most questions: 619.Does India Need Younger Leaders? Anandiben Patel, former ChiefMinister of Gujarat, cited the BJP tradition of voluntary retirement atthe age of 75 as a reason for her retirement. Babulal Gaur steppeddown from Madhya Pradesh cabinet, sticking to the unwritten agelimit rule of the BJP. Many members of legislative assembly (MLAs)were seen rallying behind Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadavduring the clash with his father and Samajwadi Par ty leader MulayamSingh Yadav."Netaji is ageing and the public understands it will not be possible forhim to run the state for a long term," MLA Mohd Rizwan told the IndianExpress. "Akhilesh is the undisputed leader with a clean image whohas set a milestone in development," MLA Indal Kumar told the IndianExpress. "The public is a fan of him, youth are his followers."

Trudeau marks one year anniversaryof swearing-in of the 29th Ministry

Ottawa - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marked the one year anniver-sary of the swearing-in of the 29th Ministry. Exactly one year ago,Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Cabinet took office with a clearmandate to deliver real change for Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Since then, the government has worked hard to fulfill its com-mitment to strengthen the middle class and grow the economy overthe long term. By listening to Canadians and by following through onthe things that matter most to them, the government has star ted todeliver real results for all Canadians:1. As a first step, the Prime Minister named his Cabinet that was notonly gender-balanced, but reflected the great diversity of Canada.2. After one month in office, the government introduced a middle classtax cut that asked the wealthiest one percent to pay a little more sothat the middle class - and those working hard to join it - could payless.3. As part of Budget 2016, the federal government introduced a newCanada Child Benefit - a fair and generous tax-free monthly chequethat gives nine out of ten Canadian families more money to help withthe high cost of raising their children.4. Working in close par tnership with the provinces and the territories, the federal government came to a historic agreement that strength-ened the Canadian Pension Plan, so that hard working Canadians cansecure the strong and stable retirement they deserve.5. Building on its commitment to forge a new, nation-to-nation rela-

tionship with Indigenous Peoples in Canada, the federal governmentlaunched the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered IndigenousWomen and Girls - a powerful step in the reconciliation process.6. In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in the MiddleEast, the Prime Minister kept his promise to open Canada's doors tomore than 25,000 Syrian refugees fleeing war and persecution.7. Recognizing the need for concer ted global action to combat cli-mate change, the government proposed a pan-Canadian approach topricing carbon pollution, one where all Canadian jurisdictions willhave carbon pricing in place by 2018.8. Finally, the government made a strong investment in Canada'syouth by boosting Canada Student Grants for middle and low-incomefamilies by 50 percent - so that more Canadians can afford a post-secondary education and receive the skills and training they need toget the jobs of today and tomorrow.Moving into the second year of the mandate, the federal governmentwill continue to invest in our people, our communities, and oureconomy. Canada will remain focused on the priorities of its citizensand take clear action to build an economy that works for everyone -not just the wealthiest one percent. Trudeau said: "While we are im-mensely proud of what has been accomplished, we know that there isa tremendous amount of work still to be done. Our government'spriorities are Canadians' priorities, and we will continue to do every-thing we can to make a real difference in the lives of all Canadians."

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Liberal economic plan has failedDear Editor,On November 1st, the Liberal government updated Canadians onthe state of Canada's economy and its own finances over the nextfive years. They downgraded forecasts for economic growth and unveiled anextra $32 billion in added spending.Canadians also learned that since the Liberals were elected, the economyhasn't created a single additional full-time job. It's clear the Liberal economicplan has failed. And not only has their plan failed, but Liberal tax hikes aremaking things worse. Canadians are worse off today than they were a yearago. First, they raised taxes on the middle-class by cancelling family taxcredits for sports and arts classes. They also broke their promise to smallbusinesses by cancelling the scheduled lowering of the small business taxrate. Now they are imposing a CPP tax hike and a carbon tax that will costfamilies thousands of dollars every year. But instead of changing course toaddress this dire situation, the Liberals are doubling down on their failed plan. The Liberal economic plan has failed and Canadians are paying for it. Conser-vatives will continue to be the voice of the taxpayer.Sincerely,Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition

PROTESTERS IN DELHI MARCHING AGAINST POLLUTION IN CITY. ABOUT 1,800 MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS WERE SHUT DOWN INTHE CAPITAL ON SATURDAY.

Amarinder has no 'locus-standi' toseek debate: AkalisCHANDIGARH, (PTI) Senior Akali leaders today asked AmarinderSingh not to "challenge" Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badalor others for a debate as "he would get enough opportunities todemonstrate his debating skills in the state Assembly if he man-aged to scrape through the ensuing assembly polls".Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secretary general and Rajya SabhaMP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Lok Sabha MPs Ranjit SinghBrahmpura and Prem Singh Chandumara, in a joint statement here, said the Punjab Congress president was sent to Lok Sabha "toarticulate the aspiration of the people of Punjab two years ago buthe had adopted a stoic silence and invariably preferred to abstainfrom Parliamentary proceedings".Amarinder has no "locus-standi" to seek debate as he had "squan-dered the golden opportunity to participate in debates in Parlia-ment," they said. The Congress in its wisdom had appointed Amarinder as the deputyleader in Lok Sabha but to its dismay he contributed little to theproceedings of the house, they said.

Sukhbir lashes out at Amarinderon farmers issueCHANDIGARH, (PTI) Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir SinghBadal today targeted Amarinder Singh on farmers issue, allegingthat the latter is "out of touch with reality" as the government hadalready taken steps to resolve problems being faced by farmers atthe hands of commission agents. He ridiculed the state Congress president for announcing that hisparty would resolve the issue of loans taken from commissionagents once it comes to power in the state."You seem to be living in a gilded cage surrounded by a coteriewhich keeps you busy in other activities so you missed the pass-ing of the Punjab Settlement of Agricultural Indebtedness Bill, 2016by the state Assembly. The bill envisages exactly what you aim todo - provide a framework for assessment and settlement of non-institutional agricultural debt which has been a major burden ondebt-ridden farmers of Punjab," he said. The SAD-BJP alliance government had taken this forward by es-tablishing five Debt Settlement Tribunals at the Commissioneratelevel, he claimed. He said retired judges had been appointed as chairmen of thetribunals and two members - one each from the commission agentand farming community - had been appointed as its members.Sukhbir claimed these tribunals, which would be extended to thedistrict level soon, would settle all commission agent-farmer re-lated disputes amicably.

PUNJAB HAS NO ROLE INDELHI'S POLLUTION: BADALFATEHGARH SAHIB(PB), (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister ParkashSingh Badal today said that the state has no role in the pollution inthe national capital."Punjab has no role in environment pollution in Delhi," he said.Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has "miserably failed"on all fronts and now they were trying to shift the onus of their nonperformance on others, he said while refuting charges that stubbleburning in Punjab is one of the reason for pollution in Delhi.Seeking resignation of Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, Badalcategorically said that any Chief Minister who fails to dischargehis duties has no moral right to remain in office.Reiterating the commitment of his government to maintain peaceand communal harmony in the state, he said that no one would beallowed to disturb the hard earned peace in the state. On the sidelines of his Sangat Darshan programme here, on pro-posed 'Sarbat Khalsa' (congregation of Sikh) at Talwandi Sabo onNovember 10, he said that it was the bounden duty of the stategovernment to maintain peace, communal harmony and brother-hood in the state at every cost. Modi most criticised person post Independence: Amit ShahCANACONA (GOA), (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the "most bitterly criticised" person post Independence, BJP chief Amit Shahsaid adding that if criticism was targeted against the country, it cannot be called freedom of expression. "Sab se jyada katu alochanaagar kisi ek vyakti ki hui hai azadi ke baad, to wah hai Narendra Modiji ki. (After the Independence, if there is one person who hasreceived the most bitter criticism, it is Narendra Modiji)," he said at the inauguration of 'India Idea Conclave 2016' here."Alochana ka swagat hai. Alochana ko sahan bhi karna chahiye. (Criticism is welcome and itshould be tolerated. But if someone goes beyond that and targets the country, it cannot be pardoned or termed as freedom of expres-sion)," he said.Shah said although dissent was part of the democracy, if it continued in an unwarranted way, there could be no development."If people do not understand this, the purpose of democracy will collapse. The purpose of democracy is to ensure that developmentreaches the last man in the society - who can utilise the same to explore his maximum potential to realise his freedom," he said. The BJP chief alleged that the country got good governance after 68 years of Independence, when the Modi-led government came topower. "We spoke about the all-inclusive development. In the 2014 elections, after 30 years a single party got majority in Parliament,"he said, adding that the government has implemented reforms in every sector. Referring to the row over the issue of triple talaq, Shahsaid, "When the Union government has taken a stand, there was no scope for confusion on the issue."

CONGRATULATIONS, SHOCK:WORLD LEADERS REACT TO

TRUMP'S VICTORY

TRUMP ELECTED US PRESIDENT IN VOTERS'REVOLT AGAINST ESTABLISHMENT

BY ARUL LOUISNEW YORK, (IANS) The maverick outsider Donald Trump stunned the worldby winning the US Presidency, the most powerful global job, as voters re-volted against a smug, condescending establishment, rejecting Hillary Clinton- seen as the face of the status quo.His victory plunged the nation and the world into an abyss of uncertainty. Hequickly tried to bring calm with a radical makeover of his style, ditching hisbrash style for a Presidential demeanour. At his victory rally Wednesday morning, Trump called for national reconcili-ation, saying: "It is time for us to come together as one united people."He offered his "pledge to every citizen of the country" to work for them andsaid he would seek from those who were critical of him their "guidance andhelp so we can unify our country".Trump spoke of Clinton's hard work in her campaign and declared she wasowed "a major debt of gratitude for her service to the nation"."The forgotten men and women of our country will no longer be forgotten," hesaid to his voter base, which he described as a movement, not a campaign."No dream is too big," he said. "America will settle for nothing less than thebest." His message to the world was that while for him the US came first, "Wewill seek common ground, not hostility."Earlier, Clinton phoned Trump to congratulate him and concede the Presi-dency to him.Clinton had shut down her celebratory meeting here at 2 a.m. without makingan appearance at the event where thousands of her supporters fell into asombre mood. Her campaign chief John Podesta came on stage at the Javits Center eventand thanked the supporters and asked them to go home and get a goodnight's sleep because at the late hour the results weren't final. The Republican Party also performed well in Congress, retaining control ofboth Senate and House, even though the leadership has been at odds withTrump. This would give Trump a free rein to shape his administration and policies -if he can reconcile with the party leadership. The entire intellectual, media, cultural and entertainment elite were rangedagainst him as were Wall Street and Silicon Valley leaders in addition to evenmany of his own party which makes his victory formidable - and to themthreatening. Trump's style of mocking his opponents resonated with a largeswathe of voters, who shared the disregard for the establishment, even if theelite held him in contempt. The US elections were in a way a mirror of the 2014 Indian election, wherePrime Minister Narendra Modi confounded pollsters and pundits by defeat-ing a political dynasty. And more recently, the British voters pulled off a similar coup with Brexit thatpassed against all prognostications. This was the second time Clinton wasrobbed of her chance to make history as the first woman elected President ofthe US.In 2008, President Barack Obama staged a coup derailing her all but assuredclaim to the Democratic Party nomination. This year, she made it past theprimary but lost to Trump in an upset.Indian Americans overwhelmingly support the Democratic Party and Trumpmade overtures to the community, even if it was focused on Hindus. He addressed a rally of Hindus, assuring them that they would have a friend

in the White House and that he would come down hard on terrorism.Polls showed that about 65 per cent of Indian Americans supported Clintonwhile only 7 per cent were for Trump.Trump, a real estate developer and reality TV character with no previouspolitical or government experience, ran on a platform of radical economicchanges, of bringing jobs back to the US and reneging on trade deals. But he has yet to outline clear plans or have a line-up of people to help himimplement the promises. The stock markets around the world went into a swoon over the uncertainty, with the Dow Jones futures dropping nearly five per cent.Trump has also said that he would dismantle the health insurance open to theuninsured introduced by President Barack Obama.Another area of uncertainty is the nomination of judges to the Supreme Court, which has the potential to radically change the laws, society and politics ofthe nation.During the campaign, his policies on immigration and terrorism and state-ments about Muslims were exaggerated by the media and the political oppo-sition to an extent that they backfired. While he said that rapists and criminals were coming over the border andneeded to be stopped, it morphed in the media and political message to himsaying that all immigrants were criminals - and by extension at first Mexi-cans and then all immigrants. And his call for enforcing immigration laws on the books and extending thewalls and barriers now in place along the border with a wall across the entireborder was turned into a campaign of xenophobia and hate against non-whites. His call for temporary suspension of immigration by Muslims whilethe screening process was being reviewed was turned into him wanting todeport all Muslims. The Clinton campaign pursued a policy of appealing to smaller segments ofthe nation, tailoring messages to appeal to them. In the process, they contrib-uted to fracturing of the nation and creating a climate of fear. This in turn turned everyone else into enemies. This forgotten middle, thenon-racist working class and whites bearing the brunt of globalisation andeconomic disruption, far larger than what the Democrats may have thoughtand which included women, turned against Clinton. She spoke and acted asif the Presidency was hers by right, further alienating many people.

The Foreign Secretary told theHouse of Commons that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's call for mili-tants not to retreat when faced with Iraqi forces was "cruelly ironic"because intelligence suggested he had fled the city, the Daily Mail re-ported. In an audio recording released on Thursday, al-Baghdadi said hewas confident of victory in the de-facto capital Mosul and urged followersto continue fighting. But Johnson, while responding to queries in the Houseof Commons, said: "It is a cruel irony that some of the intelligence we have, you may know, suggests that the gentleman in question has actuallyvacated the scene himself and is nonetheless using internet media toencourage people to take part in violence."He pledged that the IS would be repelled from the war-torn Iraqi city whichhas been controlled by the IS since June 2014, and told MPs:"The house can be sure that Daesh will be driven from Mosul, but this is the toughest task that Iraq's security forces have yet encoun-tered." India not making special preparationsahead of DRS debut: KohliRAJKOT, (IANS) India Test skipper Virat Kohli has said adjustingto the Decision Review System (DRS) won't be a problem forthe team as it gets ready to take on England in the first cricketTest here on Wednesday."There is no rocket science to DRS. You have a fair idea ofwhere the ball has hit, where it has pitched and whether it is inline or not. It's pretty basic things in cricket so we don't need tonecessarily go through a course for DRS," Kohli told repor terson the eve of the first Test. This will be the first Test series in India where the DRS, whichthe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has consistentlyopposed, will be used. "We have observed enough watching ontelevision how DRS is used and it's really impor tant what thebowler and wicket-keeper thinks of that event or a referral if ithas to be made." "So it's pretty simple. We are not too muchfocussing on it. Yes it gives you another oppor tunity to check onthe decisions you feel is not right and I think it's pretty fair," Kohliadded. England will go into the series as underdogs given theirrecent 1-1 draw in a two-match Test series against hostsBangladesh. The Alastair Cook captained side lost the secondTest after winning the first to draw the series.Former England captain Michael Vaughan has constantly said itwould be very difficult for the English to beat India who are currently WorldNo. 1 in Tests and have just whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 in a series. Kohlithough isn't reading too much into the mind games.

Deepika's MTV EMAs look sparks debateNEW DELHI, (PTI) Deepika Padukone's 2016 MTV Europe Music Awardsappearance has been labelled as "Bollywood blunder" by an internationalpublication but Indian designers have supported the actress for choosing aMonisha Jaisingh ensemble. The 30-year-old actress, who is set to make her Hollywood debut with VinDiesel's "xXx: Return of Xander Cage," walked the red carpet in a look puttogether by Jaising and Shaleen Nathani. She wore a thigh-high slit trail skirt, in military green and olive hues, whichshe teamed up with an embellished bodice and matching bomber jacket.Fringe earrings, a Balmain belt, Misho rings and black heels completed herlook. A British publication, which had earlier received flak for addressingDeepika as a "female companion" of Novak Djokovic, featured her in their'Worst Dressed Celebs', calling her a 'Bollywood Blunder.'However, Indian designers like Ritu Beri, Rina Dhaka, Anju Modi and PayalSinghal, who have dressed Deepika, said though there were too many ele-ments in her look, it cannot be called a fashion faux pas.Beri dismissed the criticism, saying Deepika is an "epitome of style"."Deepika is the epitome of style. She has inherent grace and elegance whichshe carries with her to every look she adorns. I absolutely loved her en-

semble and especially the creativity with which she put it together," said Beri.Modi, who has designed Deepika's look in "Ram Leela" and "Bajirao Mastani",said the actress always looks elegant."She can wear a sack, or an international designer or an Indian designer andlook great as always. I liked what she was wearing. And they (internationalmedia) should understand the Indian sensibility. It is great that Deepika de-cided to wear an Indian designer," Modi told PTI. Dhaka said though the lookwas "excessive", she loved the skirt and the bold slit."The top, however, I felt was a bit overpowering. It was an excessive look forme with the strong eye make-up, strong shoulders, accessories. We areused to seeing her like that here. May be it was a bit too much for theinternational press. But definitely the look was not a blunder," she said.Singhal said she liked that Deepika decided to wear an Indian designer forher maiden award red carpet outing even though it was "a bit overdone"."I have worked with Deepika and her stylist before and I think it was just a oneoff moment for them and she will make a striking appearance soon. I likedthat she decided to wear an Indian designer but I feel that it was a bit overdonewith belt, earrings and jacket.

'MAHAYODDHA RAMA': ACTION-PACKED DYNAMIC VERSION

Movie Review

VOICE: GULSHAN GROVER, JIMMY SHEIRGILL,

SAMEERA REDDY, RAZA MURAD, KUNAL KAPOOR,

MUKESH RISHI AND VIKRAM GOKHALE

DIRECTED BY: ROHIT VAID

RATING: **1/2

Our epics are constantly being retold and reinvented forcenturies and this 2D animation film, "Mahayoddha Rama"is the latest on the block. The story remains the same, butthe telling is completely altered. This is not the usual, soft-at-its-core Ramayana that one has read in comics orwatched on Doordarshan decades ago. Por traying Rama asthe warrior prince, this film, directed by Rohit Vaid, isnarrated from Raavan's point of view and is treated morelike a sci-fic than a mythological fare. With a harsh, loud and aggressive tone, the narrativemeanders. The plot and the screenplay, though laced withverbose exposition, are uncomplicated, direct and occasion-ally funny. It is surprisingly earnest in its subject matter andmay even be too intense for one's liking. The dialogues arecolloquially, run-of-the-mill, that might appeal to the youngerlot. And the action sequences are fun-packed andexhilarating. The voices lent by the ace star cast synchronize aptly withthe characters and their moods. Though the film is aboutRam, it is Ravana who captures your imagination. With hismany qualities and ten talking heads, he is a treat to watch. Each head has a unique voice and the main visage or the

central head, the fifth head from the left, is voiced by GulshanGrover. He enthrals you with his pronounced tenor. So doesSadashiv Amrapurkar (who had lent his voice to the characterbefore his death in 2014) as Gusse Ki Jwala - Ravan's angryhead and Kiku Sharda as Ravan's gossiping head, Udti Khabar. The other actors who aptly lend their voices are Kunal Kapooras Ram, Jimmy Sheirgill as Laxman, Sameera Reddy as Sita,Mukesh Rishi as Hanuman, Suchitra Pillai as Shurpanaka andLillete Dubey as Kaikayee,. Technically, the film is a superblydrawn animated feature. The screen is filled with a colour fulpalette that appeases the eye. The 2D animation is sharp andastutely created, but has nothing to boast about, given today'sadvance digital technology. Never theless, the film is visuallyexciting. The characters and the landscapes makes each framealluring and stimulating. The songs, penned by Javed Akhtar, are bright and chirpy. Theybreak the monotony of the action and yet keep the audienceengaged. The songs are brought alive by Aadesh Srivastava'sdynamic music. It was one of his last notable works as a musicdirector. Overall, though the film was made over a span of eightyears, it seems fresh as ever. Kids would enjoy it and adultswould find it dreary.

Ishant needs to learn to bowlwicket-taking deliveries: Kapil

BY KUSHAN SARKARNEW DELHI, (PTI) Former India captain Kapil Dev feels thatdespite all his talent, speedster Ishant Sharma lacks the ability tobowl "wicket-taking deliveries" more consistently.Ishant, who missed the series against New Zealand due toChikungunya, is back in the squad for the upcoming England Testsstarting November 9 in Rajkot. The lanky pacer's Test statistics of 209 Test wickets from 72 gameswith a strike rate of 66.6 (nearly 11 and half overs for a wicket)stick out like a sore thumb and Kapil said he has to strive forconsistency."I think Ishant is a very good bowler. He is a genuine quickbowler with great height. But he has to develop the wicket-takingball, that ability to take wickets at crucial times. Perhaps that'swhere he is lacking. There is no shortage of ability and talent butsomewhere the talent to take wickets is missing," Kapil told PTIduring an interaction organised by the Star Sports ahead of thefive-match India-England series star ting on Wednesday. For therecord, Kapil took 300 wickets in 83 Tests with most of them onIndian batting feather-beds.

Hardik can open with Shami: LaxmanBY KUSHAN SARKAR

NEW DELHI, (PTI) Former India star batsman VVS Laxmanprefers all-rounder Hardik Pandya over Karun Nair in the play-ing XI for the first Test match against England, considering hisall-round skill sets. Laxman is a firm believer of the "fivebowler theory" and wants Pandya to open the bowling withMohammed Shami, with Amit Mishra playing as the thirdspecialist spinner. "I like the five-bowler theory. Especiallythe depth of this Indian team. Ashwin is in good (batting) form,Wriddhiman Saha in good form, Ravindra Jadeja is in goodform. I would love to see Amit Mishra in action for the way inwhich he bowled against New Zealand. He is a proven match-winner, three quality spinners can put a lot of pressure on thisEngland batting line-up," Laxman told PTI during an interac-tion organised by the Star Spor ts on the eve of the Englandseries. Laxman gave an elaborate explanation as to why hewants Pandya in place as he feels that he can share the newball with Shami."I think that (Pandya with new ball) can be an option and that'sone of the reasons that he has been drafted into the team. WithHardik, he is bowling at more than 140 kmph now, he is nowmore consistent in his line and length. He can also give those10 or 15 overs that the other fast bowlers can give. Hardik willdefinitely be my choice," said Laxman.
