Jindalee State School year seven teacher, Keith Dawes, caught up with one of his former Jindalee State School students, Australian Olympic Gold medal winner, Natalie Cook at the school sports day on Tuesday. Mr Dawes has been a gold medal performing teacher at Jindalee State School for many years and has guided the education and development of many students from the Jindalee community including Natalie Cook. “I was delighted to catch up with Natalie during her visit. Last time she was here at the school assembly I missed her and was pleased to see her this time” said Mr Dawes. I followed her gold medal winning performance at the Sydney Olympics and her efforts to win bronze in Atlanta four years later.” Natalie was at the school to help celebrate Olympics Day and to watch her nephew participate in the junior sports. During the “Jindalympics” opening ceremony, Natalie told the students about the thrill of being a part of the Olympic Games and the honour it is to represent Australia. She encouraged all of our students to be active participants in the sports and take every opportunity to have fun and enjoy what they do. She also presented our school with a certificate to commemorate our participation in Olympic day 2013. “It was a great pleasure to attend the Jindalympics and interact with the students during their wonderful sports day and of course to see my teacher Mr Dawes.” Following her attendance at Jindalee State School Natalie was off to Bali for a well-deserved holiday. The senior sports followed the junior on Tuesday afternoon and again today. Students participated in an athletes’ march past, reading of the ‘Jindalympics’ oath and participation in running, jumping, throwing and ball games events. Full details of the sports days as well as the names of students selected in our district sports team will be published after the vacation. Bring Your Own Device Following wide consultation with staff and parents over the past several months, we have reached a decision regarding the future of ICT devices in learning at Jindalee State School. For 2014, all year two and year four classes will be ‘Bring Your Own Device’ classes. Year two students will be able to bring iPads to school and year four students will have the choice of an iPad or a selection of approved Windows 8 devices. Our year five, six and seven laptop classes will continue under their current arrangements and our two year five non-laptop classes will also be BYOD classes. The permitted devices will be advised during term three at parent information nights. This is the next phase in our commitment to ensure the latest technology is available to support our students in their learning. The implementation of the BYOD program will be supported by additional training and support for staff, enhancements to the school wireless networks, classroom furniture and resources and additional technology for classes not involved in the BYOD program. Additional information will be provided in a letter to parents this week. For further information, please contact the school office. School Disco A very successful disco was held on Friday night at the school with a great attendance of parents, staff and students. It was certainly a fun night and the pyjama theme seemed very popular. The music had everyone hopping and tapping their feet and even some of the older members of the school community were seen out on the dance floor. Thanks and congratulations to everyone involved especially Joshua Green, our chaplain, Louise Whittering Deputy Principal and Admin Officer Nicky Taylor for their great organisation. She also presented our school with a certificate to commemorate our participation in Olympic day 2013. “It was a great

pleasure to attend the Jindalympics and interact with the students during their wonderful sports day and of course to see my teacher Mr Dawes.”

Following her attendance at Jindalee State School Natalie was off to Bali for a well-deserved holiday.

The senior sports followed the junior on Tuesday afternoon and again today. Students participated in an athletes’ march past, reading of the ‘Jindalympics’ oath and participation in running, jumping, throwing and ball games events. Full details of the sports days as well as

the names of students selected in our district sports team will be published after the vacation.

Bring Your Own Device Following wide consultation with staff and parents over the past several months, we have reached a decision regarding the future of ICT devices in learning at Jindalee State School. For 2014, all year two and year four classes will be ‘Bring Your Own Device’ classes. School Leadership The Education Department has advised that our Deputy Principal, Kim Tvede, will be continuing in his role as Principal of Serviceton South State School until the end of the year and that the Deputy Principal position due to Matthew Heard’s retirement will also be vacant during

semester two. As a consequence of this, I am pleased to advise that Louise Whittering will continue as Deputy Principal and Leisa Cave and Caroline Duffus will continue their Assistant Principal (curriculum and teaching and learning) positions till the end of the year.

Report Cards Student report cards will be issued on Thursday this week. The reports are intended to give parents a clear explanation of their child’s progress during semester one. Any questions should be directed to the class teacher. Any queries regarding your student’s Report, it is

important to contact the office by Friday.

Wise Ones The wise Ones program for gifted students will continue in term three. The Wise Ones organisation will be contacting parents with details of the program for the

term including dates and times. The school will no longer be able to collect the fees on behalf of the Wise Ones program and parents of students involved will receive invoices directly from the company. Any questions concerning the Wise Ones program should be directed to their teacher or head office. See page 7.

School Assembly Due to our sports day today, our final school assembly will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2.15pm. The assembly will be a whole school assembly and will feature a performance by students from Serviceton South State School led by Mr Kim Tvede. All members of our school

community are invited to attend.

School Vacation The winter vacation will commence on Friday, 21 June, at 3:00pm and school will resume on Monday, 8 July, at

8:50am. The school will be closed during the vacation and the Vacation Care program will operate during the two weeks’ break. We wish everyone a very safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to a very successful semester two.

Message from the Chaplain Well we are at the final week of Term 2! Who would have thought the term would go so fast! I would like to say a big thank you to all who helped at the school disco last Friday night. It was a great turnout and the students seemed to have a ball! A

very special event is coming up, which I know you will love. I will be holding a ‘Dinner With The Chaplain’ night at Jindalee McDonalds! On Monday, 22 July, come and share dinner with me in what will be a fun and relaxed night. Look at page 8 for more information. Have a wonderful and safe holiday everyone! Joshua Green

Reader’s Cup Success Congratulations to four Year 7 students, (L to R) Hani Vu, Alyssa Kearney, Jasmine Bishop-White and Hannah

Matheson-Peut, who achieved First Place in the Reader’s Cup challenge organised by the Teacher-Librarians, Corinda Network on Wednesday 12 June. The girls each received a medal, a certificate of participation and of course, the Readers Cup for 2013. The challenge was to read 5 books, and anticipate questions that may be asked. Thank you to the girls for accepting the

challenge with enthusiasm and for the effort they put into their reading. Great team work!

Chess Champions They’ve done it again! After their recent success at the Primary Schools Chess Championships, Gaviru Devendra, Austin Prentice, William Du and Daniel Fraser (pictured L to R) were winners at the Metropolitan Region Interschool Chess Competition. Message from the P&C President I'd like to take this opportunity to again welcome Katie Shaw to the role of tuckshop convenor. However the tuckshop cannot just function with one person, it needs a band of volunteers, both regular and irregular to assist in

the day-to-day food production, service and cleaning that keeps the tuckshop functioning. Without you, the volunteer, the tuckshop cannot operate. Please find the tuckshop roster elsewhere in the newsletter and consider how you can help. And stay tuned next term for some incentives to make the experience more interesting...

The P&C is pleased to announce that we approved a long term plan to replace and add to the existing classroom furniture across the school. This is a vision over 2-3 years to replace storage, shelving, tables in the classrooms to replace items that are in some cases nearly as old as the school! This is as a result of the strong financial position of your P&C. If you have other ideas to contribute to the

community, please come to the next P&C meeting and let us know! Ben Marczyk

Introducing DanDaLion Friends We would like to invite you to an exclusive preview of DanDaLion Friends …. A community Not for Profit Organisation for those with ‘diffabilities’ (different). DanDaLion is an online

resource wanting to demonstrate and celebrate the true value that people with a ‘diffability’ can give to the community. It aims to connect parents, caregivers, volunteers and service providers through building an interactive

online resource so that we can deliver real help and services ‘on the ground’. Simply, it is Support, Friendship, Community. A Champagne/Afternoon Tea is being held on Sunday, 7 July from 2-5pm at 25 Mandalay Street, Fig Tree Pocket as a pre-launch to this amazing initiative inspired by Dan Bray (DanDaLion). Dan is 18, loves travelling on trains, watching train videos, ‘The Wiggles’ and all types

of planes. He feels safest at home as that is where he feels least anxious. Lately he has been exceptionally brave in getting to know more safe people and safe places within our community. Every week through the amazing patience and skills of others, Dan is now helping out in the community,

making friends and gaining new life experiences. Yet, there are so many similar people in our community not yet brave enough to make that next step. Small steps DO make a big difference so to help us to provide this valuable resource, we are asking for a $20.00 entry donation on the day and for any product or gift donations to be pledged for our

fundraising raffles. You may have a creative idea to contribute to the afternoon but regardless, your generosity will be listed on our event program, as well as through the social media coverage generated on the day. As the DanDaLion website is launched in July, event photos and your generosity will be noted on the site. DanDaLion’s creator,

Laury Bray, will outline the exciting plans of this truly remarkable community initiative but as a DanDaLion Friend and event co-coordinator, can you please RSVP to [email protected] by Friday, 28 June.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, 7 July, to help this cub turn into a lion ….

A DanDaLion Sincerely, Brooke Monahan
