Cowes Primary School March 19 2015 Newsletter No 4 —————————————————————————————————————————————– We are fast approaching the end of term; it has flown by. Next term will be a lot longer with an eleven week term. Thank you so much for everyone’s assistance with the fete on March 8. It was our best one ever. We made in excess of $22,000. We will now be able to purchase iPads for the classrooms. Thank you for all of the wonderful gift boxes you provided, yummy cakes, second hand clothes, crockery, books and donations and the many gift vouchers from businesses which were used in the Raffle, Silent Auction and as prizes on stalls. Also thank you very much for the time spent working on the variety of stalls and for attending and supporting us on the day. On Monday, the curriculum day was based on a professional development seminar on a word study program called Words Their Way. It is a program which explicitly teaches phonics, vocabulary and spelling instruction at a child’s point of need. This is an area which we wanted to strengthen and add to our current practices. The program covers the areas from the assessment of orthographic development, principles and practices, word study in the emergent spellers through to the high end derivational relations stage. (from beginning spellers to sophisticated spellers) Over the past two days the grades sixes have been attending a surfing clinic run by Wonthaggi Secondary College (WSC). This is run in conjunction with the Know Your Island Program. WSC paid for the buses for our students to attend as well as provided Surf Life Saving Instructors. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience; one boy was quoted saying it had been the best day of his life. The program also emphasised coastal awareness, understanding rips, currents undertows and local surrounds. The Grade 3 / 4‘s have attended The Water Recycling Plant as part of their water theme. The students were learning about the process of recycled water and it various uses along with what is appropriate to put down the drains. There will not be an assembly next week. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday with your families and I look forward to seeing all the children back at the start of next term. —————————————————————————————————————————————–

We are fast approaching the end of term; it has flown by. Next term will be a lot longer with an eleven

week term.

Thank you so much for everyone’s assistance with the fete on March 8. It was our best one ever.

We made in excess of $22,000. We will now be able to purchase iPads for the classrooms.

Thank you for all of the wonderful gift boxes you provided, yummy cakes, second hand clothes,

crockery, books and donations and the many gift vouchers from businesses which were used in the

Raffle, Silent Auction and as prizes on stalls. Also thank you very much for the time spent working on

the variety of stalls and for attending and supporting us on the day.

On Monday, the curriculum day was based on a professional development seminar on a word study

program called Words Their Way. It is a program which explicitly teaches phonics, vocabulary and

spelling instruction at a child’s point of need. This is an area which we wanted to strengthen and add to

our current practices. The program covers the areas from the assessment of orthographic development,

principles and practices, word study in the emergent spellers through to the high end derivational

relations stage. (from beginning spellers to sophisticated spellers)

Over the past two days the grades sixes have been attending a surfing clinic run by Wonthaggi

Secondary College (WSC). This is run in conjunction with the Know Your Island Program. WSC paid

for the buses for our students to attend as well as provided Surf Life Saving Instructors. The students

thoroughly enjoyed the experience; one boy was quoted saying it had been the best day of his life. The

program also emphasised coastal awareness, understanding rips, currents undertows and local

surrounds.

The Grade 3 / 4‘s have attended The Water Recycling Plant as part of their water theme. The students

were learning about the process of recycled water and it various uses along with what is appropriate to

put down the drains. There will not be an assembly next week. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday with your families and I look forward to seeing all the children back at the start of next term. Sue Becker Principal

Cowes Primary School Values This fortnight’s social skill we have been focusing on is

‘Being prepared’. It is important to be organized and

prepared for many everyday activities. Being prepared for

school each day requires students to be organized and

ready. It is important to be on time for school every day,

remembering to bring their diaries, having their bathers

when it is swimming and remembering other items

essential for school activities.

Good Friday Appeal 2015 If you wish to donate to the Good Friday appeal 2015.

Ride To School Day 2015 Congratulations to the large number of students and families who participated in last Friday’s

National Ride 2 School Day. It was very pleasing to see more that 50% of the school community

take an active means of transport to school. A big thank you to Woolworths Cowes who

supplied fresh fruit for students on their arrival and to the Phillip Island BUG group for their

support and participation in accompanying students to school from outlying areas.

Thank you to all the parents and helpers on the day for making it such a great success.

Cowes PS South Gippsland Division Swimming Finals On Thursday 12 March twelve Cowes Primary School students represented their school at the Gippsland

Region Swimming Finals held at the Sale 50m outdoor pool. The regional swimming sports provide an

excellent opportunity for the competitors to extend the skills they have mastered through the swimming

program at the school and extracurricular swimming club and training.

The student’s effort, results and behaviour on the day were outstanding. This year CPS walked away with 5

students making it through to the state finals. The 9-10 Girls 50m Freestyle relay, made up of Matilda

Grace, Hannah Simmons, Jorja Newman and Lexi Walton, with Matilda also qualifying in her 9-10 girls

50m freestyle, and Jude Grace in his 12/13 Boys Breaststroke. Congratulations to all competitors on your

brilliant determination, and to the parents who joined in with their support on the day. The team of 5 will compete against other schools across Victoria on Wednesday 15 April at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. We wish you all the best for this exciting event.
