Sheriff’s Reportof law. Oct. 26 Theft from a vehicle was reported in the 60000 block of East Alpine Way, SaddleBrooke. Oct. 26 Theft was reported in the 39000 block of South Old Arena Drive, Eagle Crest. Oct. 26 Criminal damage was reported in the 300 block of East Fifth Street, San Manuel. A sliding glass door was broken. Oct. 26 Assault was reported at First Avenue Elementary School, San Manuel. Two five-year-olds were fighting over a ball and one used excessive force on the other. By state law the school must report the incident. Parents of both were notified. Oct. 26 Alberto Arellano Valencia, 31, San Manuel, was arrested in the 800 block of First Avenue, San Manuel, and was charged with threatening-intimidation. He was tranpsorted and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence.

Oct. 27 Burglary and criminal damage were reported in the 1800 block of North Calle Valencia, Oracle. Three windows were broken. Oct. 27 Two goats were reported running east on American Avenue, Oracle. Pinal County Animal Control was notified. Oct. 27 Theft of political signs from a yard was reported in the 39000 block of South Mountain Shadow Drive, Eagle Crest. Oct. 29 Burglary was reported at a church in the area of West Linda Vista Road, Oracle. A storeroom’s locks were broken. Oct. 30 Criminal damage (graffiti) was reported in the area of East Eagle Heights Drive and South Eagle Crest Ranch, Eagle Crest. Oct. 30 Criminal damage and burglary were reported in the area of Charleau Gap Trail and Lago Del Oro, SaddleBrooke. A vehicle’s windows were broken

and approximately $6,000 worth of tools were taken. Oct. 30 Criminal damage was reported in the area of East Eagle Heights Drive, Eagle Crest. Oct. 30 Attempted horse theft was reported in the 30000 block of South Veterans Memorial Boulevard, San Manuel. Oct. 31 A fight was reported in the 2000 block of West El Paseo, Oracle. A 13-year-old girl was knocked down by some other children, sustaining a possible broken hand. Oct. 31 Assault was reported in the 3000 block of North Rockliffe Boulevard, Oracle. Oct. 31 An accident with injuries was reported in the are of East Desert Peak Drive and South Desert Bluff Drive, SaddleBrooke. A woman riding a bicycle was struck by a vehicle. Oct. 31 Theft of a bicycle was reported in the 300 block of East Fifth Street, San Manuel. Nov. 1 A vicious dog was reported in the area of West Fifth Avenue and South Avenue A, San Manuel. Nov. 1 Child abuse was reported by school officials at First Avenue Elementary School, San Manuel. Nov. 1 Jose Jesus Moreno Valencia, 52, Mammoth, was arrested on Redington Road west of San Manuel Golf Course, San Manuel, on a warrant for failure to appear. He was transported

and booked into the Pinal County Jail. Nov. 2 Theft of credit cards was reported in the area of South Avenue A, San Manuel. Nov. 3 Pablo Antonio Ruiz, 24, Oracle, was arrested in the area of Campo Bonito, Oracle, and was charged with unlawful flight from law enforcement. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail. Nov. 3 A concerned citizen reported that approximately five male juveniles were behind Avenue B Elementary School, San Manuel, starting fires. Another citizen reported seeing six or seven juveniles lighting fires and stomping them out. The juveniles scattered when the citizen approached their location. Nov. 3 A person reported to deputies that a dog was stolen from a yard in the 200 block of South Avenue B, San Manuel. The dog was later found dead in the back yard. Nov. 3 Joseph Lee Cogdell, 21, Oracle was arrested in the area of Calle Futura at the car wash, Oracle, on warrants for interfering with judicial proceedings (two), drug paraphernalia violations (two) and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

By Pete RiosChairman, Pinal County Supervisors I just wanted to pass along a few items to update you on what is happening in Florence with the Board of Supervisors. I was re-elected as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors until the end of our terms in 2012. It has been a pleasant experience as the Chairman and I look forward to keeping up the good work with my colleagues on behalf of the citizens of Pinal County. Despite the sluggish economy, Pinal County has done it’s best to weather the storm. This budget year, the Supervisors had to cut $2.1 million. We were able to do this without a reduction in workforce. When it comes to cutting a budget, I am reminded of the often used phrase: “I have good news and I have bad news.” The good news is that your tax bill will be lower since we did not raise the tax rate and housing valuations are going down. The bad news is that we are going to have to shrink or downright eliminate services for residents. While some may cheer at the elimination of services, we must keep in mind that there

I am hopeful for a day when we can bring back or strengthen services that have been a victim of this economy. The Board recently adopted the redistricting lines for the upcoming 2012 election. We had to go to five supervisor districts due to the 2010

Census population figures coming in at just over 375,000 residents in Pinal County. Our elections department did a great job offering three mapping options that would be likely to pass Department of Justice standards. Before we voted to adopt the redistricting lines, the Elections Department

solicited opinions in public meetings held throughout the county. The Supervisors voted on a map that reflected the input from our citizens. I want to pass along my thanks to all of you who took time to voice your opinion on our redistricting. I want to remind the citizens in the eastern part of the

county that we still have vouchers available for free dumping at the Dudleyville Landfill. Each household is allowed two free visits to the landfill per year to dispose their trash and other waste. If you haven’t used up your two visits, please come by my district office in Mammoth located at 118 South Catalina.

By Jennifer R. Carnes The Town of Mammoth is once again searching for a director for its public works

department following the resignation of Wendy Gort last week. Over the past few months,

Mammoth begins search for new public works directorseveral members of the Mammoth Town Council have complained about the weeds in the town, especially at the cemetery. Her letter of resignation was seven pages long and listed for Council Members all the items Gort and her crew have accomplished since she was hired six months ago. She admitted to the council that the weeds are indeed very bad in the town, but felt that was actually a good indication that she was doing her job correctly since the complaints weren’t about the water or wastewater treatment plant – Gort’s top priority since she was hired. “It was my vision,” Gort wrote in her resignation letter, “to lead the Public Works Department and the Town of Mammoth forward by systematically taking care of the past problems, developing new policies and procedures, implementing long-term planning, effectively utilizing resources and taking advantage of new technology. However, it is becoming very clear that no one shares this vision and I will not be supported in this

effort.” After listing the department’s accomplishment and items left to complete, she wrote that she is very proud of the work that she has done for the Town of Mammoth. “What I will not do,” she said, “is be bullied or intimidated into doing something that I do not think is right, nor will I change my priorities of first and foremost operating and maintaining the water and wastewater system in compliance with all regulations.” Her resignation was accepted by the Council at the special meeting on Thursday night with only one councilman, Robert Koch, voting against it. Gort’s resignation left the town in a bit of a sticky spot. According to Arizona Department of Environmental Quality regulations, the town must have on staff a person certified to run the wastewater treatment plant and maintain the water system. Gort is the only staff member who is qualified to fill the position. The town is required to either contract with a

certified person or hire a certified person within 18 days of Gort’s leaving town employment. Should the town fall out of compliance with this rule, the town risks being fined more than $1,000 per day not in compliance. Not wanting to leave the town in a lurch, Gort submitted a bid to contract the work on a month-to-month basis until no longer needed. Her bid was $1,283 per month. Another bid from Doug Kline of San Manuel started at $2,200. He said in his bid that should the work be more than he anticipated, the rate would likely increase. Juan Ponce, retired Public Works Director, stayed on in a similar position until Gort was hired. His rate was $1,200 per month. The council debated which was the better choice with several indicating that they preferred Kline’s proposal. Councilman Larry Ramirez finally moved to accept Gort’s bid since it was a month-to-month basis and was significantly lower than Kline’s bid. The contract was approved with Vice Mayor Frances Wickham voting against it.

The final matter on the agenda concerned advertising for the position. Several of the council members thought that the position should either not be filled or be given to the current leadman, an idea that was met with some opposition. It was suggested that the council’s commissioner for public works take on more of a leadership role with the department, another idea that was met with opposition. “Why not give Councilman Koch a police car and a gun?” asked Ramirez. (Koch serves as the police commissioner.) Koch said that he believes the commissioner positions to be ones of oversight, not leadership within the department. The council finally unanimously agreed to advertise for the position as well as work with the leadman to keep the department on track during the search for a new director. During the council comments, several of the council members expressed regret that Gort was leaving.

George fell in love with athletics, especially American football (gridiron) as a young man growing up in his native country of New Zealand. His desire over the years has been to promote gridiron, not only to the people of New Zealand, but also to Australia where he lived for many years. That is why George started the Down Under Bowl which eventually led to the establishment of the Down Under Hoops Classic and the Down Under International Games. The Down Under Sports programs use the common language of sports to bridge the continents and provide a forum for athletes from around the globe to compete head to head in the sport they love. During the past 23 years, Down Under Sports has had the opportunity to share the land Down Under with tens of thousands of individuals from across the United States. Some prior standouts of the Down Under Bowl include Jake “The Snake” Plummer, past quarterback for the Denver Broncos; Ahman Green, running back for the Green Bay Packers; and Rob Morris 2007 Superbowl Champion with the Indianapolis Colts. The 2012 Down Under Sports program will include competition in football, cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, cross-country, wrestling and track and field. I want to thank the members of the Mammoth Town Council that were responsible for rectifying my problem. I filed a complaint with Mammoth Police, but they referred me to the courts. Thinking I could get the issue resolved without the courts, I tried the Police Commissioner (a Minister and Councilman) but he told me he was aware of my problem and saw nothing wrong. I asked if it would still be ok if it happened at his Church, but no reply. Still trying to get the issue resolved, I tried to have it put on the Agenda for the Town Meeting (the Mayor refuses to put it on the Agenda). I have two council members working against me: one, the commissioner of Public Works, and the other, the Police Commissioner, not to mention the Mayor. On 10/20/11, during the Town Meeting (Call to the Public) I handed paperwork with pictures to all council members, plus the Town Attorney. After the meeting, I was told the issue is resolved. The Mammoth Police Report is submitted by the department. According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent

until proven guilty in a court of law. Oct. 30 A suspicious person was reported in the 700 block of Dungan. The responding officer was unable to locate the person. Oct. 31 A civil standby was performed in the 100 block of Copper Street. Nov. 1 A possible burglary was reported. The responding officer found everything to be secure. Nov. 1 Cattle was reported in the roadway

on Highway 77. The cows were gone upon the officer’s arrival. Nov. 3 Mammoth Fire assisted a patient in the 700 block of Dungan. The patient was transported to Northwest Hospital. Nov. 4 A loud music complaint was made in the 100 block of Childs Street. The music was turned down. Nov. 5 Possible animal cruelty was reported to police.

the San Manuel Elks Lodge is preparing to show its thanks to veterans and the

Elks to thank community, veterans with annual Thanksgiving Dinnercommunity. The Elks Annual Veterans/Community Appreciation Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Nov. 20 from noon to 4 p.m. or until the food runs out. Last year they served 13 turkeys and four hams with all the trimmings and dessert. More than 300 people were fed. They will be looking for

lots of food to serve at the dinner. The Elks Lodge is accepting monetary and food donations to make this dinner a success. Volunteers are also needed to help prepare and serve the dinner. Everyone in the Tri-Community is invited to come to the San Manuel Elks Lodge at 143 North Eighth Avenue, enjoy an

early Thanksgiving dinner and show their appreciation for our country’s veterans. This year’s dinner will include pit cooked turkeys, fried turkeys and traditional oven baked turkeys along with hams, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, vegetables, rolls and pies and all kinds of desserts. The Elks are also providing transportation

Foundation which is the charity arm of the Elks. The Elks National Foundation supports the local Elks clubs in their charity work. The money raised during the year allows the San Manuel Elks Club to provide scholarships for San Manuel High

By John Hernandez There’s a new face behind the service desk at Oracle Ford. Duane Brown is from New Brunswick, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University where he received a bachelors’ degree in management. After trying the banking business for awhile, he got into the automotive service industry. Duane moved to Tucson 25 years ago. When asked why he moved to Arizona, he said “to get away from New Jersey.” He meant the cold and the congestion of city life. He lives on the north side of Tucson with his wife of 30

years. His daughter is going to the University of Arizona where she is studying nursing. Duane is now the service manager at Oracle Ford. A few months ago a co-worker of his called him and told him that the service manager at Oracle Ford was leaving. He called and talked with Mark Phelps and got the job. He said he knew Mark through interaction between Oracle Ford and the Ford dealership Duane worked at in Tucson. Duane said he likes working in Oracle. He can drive the 35 miles to work in the same time it took him to drive 12 miles in Tucson. He loves the outdoors and is an avid mountain biker.

Carnes Every year on Nov. 11 my aunt and thousands of others just like her take time to participate in little patriotic events sponsored by the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign War posts throughout the United States. To them, Veterans Day is more than an excuse to have a three-day weekend. To them, Veterans Day is a chance to honor the men and women who served in the military and protected the very freedoms afforded by this country. My aunt sells little American flags as a fundraiser for her local American Legion. Like many Americans, men in my family have served

in several branches of the military. My uncle Steve was in the Air Force, serving as an aviation mechanic at Edwards Air Force Base and at other bases in the world. My uncle Richard served in the Navy aboard the USS Carl Vincent. My uncle Bernie was also in the Navy and served aboard the USS Saratoga at the tail end of the Vietnam War. My uncle Mike was in the Army during Vietnam. Their older brother Ralph was also in the Army and served in Korea and Vietnam. My cousin Jeff is still in the Army. He is stationed at Camp David and serves with the President’s communication advance team. Some of my other cousins have also served

Veterans Day is Friday – remember to say thank youin the military, several of whom served tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. I’m very proud of my uncles and cousins. I’m also very proud of the men and women in the Copper Corridor who have served in the military or who are still serving in the military. We try to honor those men and women with our “Service Salute” or “Lest We Forget” columns whenever a family member or friend updates the newspaper on the military person’s status. Veterans Day is usually celebrated on Nov. 11. This year, the date seems a bit more significant – Nov. 11, 2011 or 11-11-11. Why is it so significant? I know that I studied the history of Veterans Day when I was in grade school – a lifetime ago (certainly many more years than I’m willing to admit). Honestly, I wasn’t sure I was remembering it right. So I did what I do best – researched it. Veterans Day is always celebrated on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because that is when hostilities officially ended in 1918, World War I, the war to end all wars. The Treaty of Versaillles was signed on June 28, 1919, but the end

of the war was generally acknowledged seven months earlier when an armistice went into effect. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day. “To us in America,” he said, “the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.” Originally, Armistice Day was meant to be celebrated with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m. The day was declared an official legal holiday on June 4, 1926, when the U.S. Congress passed a concurrent resolution: “Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings

on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.” Congress passed an official Act on May 13, 1938 that required the day be dedicated to the cause of world peace. It was primarily set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II and the Korean Conflict, the 83rd Congress amended the Act of 1938, striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With its June 1, 1954 approval, the legislation ensured that November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The Uniform Holiday Bill, signed June 28, 1968, moved Veterans Day to a Monday, observed first with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. The move was designed to give federal employees a three-day weekend. Other holidays, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day and Columbus Day, were also

moved to Mondays (and continue to this day to be observed on that day). But in 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97, returning the annual observance of Veterans Day to Nov. 11. This Friday, on Nov. 11, kids will be out of school. Government offices and banks will be closed. Retail stores will have their “pre-Black Friday” sales in full effect. Please, take a moment to consider those men and women who have sacrificed and served for the common good. And if you know someone who is a veteran (or someone who is still serving) or if you happen to meet someone on the street, take a moment to say, “Thank you.” And if you’re over in the Safford area and happen upon a very patriotic elderly woman who is selling small American flags, buy one from her and tell her that her niece says, “Hi, Aunt Lou.”Editor’s note: More information on the history of Veterans Day can be found online at www.va.gov/opa/vetsday.

In 2010, the Arizona Interscholastic Association made changes to swimming divisions. For Swimming competitions, High Schools with enrollment of over 1730 students are Division I and High Schools with less than 1730 students are classified as Division II. These new divisions replaced the old 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A divisions for swimming. Both Divisions held the State Championship Meet at the new Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa on Nov. 4 and 5. In Division II, San Manuel High School was one of the smaller schools to have a swimmer qualify to compete at the meet. To qualify to swim at the Championship

Meet, individual swimmers must meet a qualifying time and be in the top 32 swimmers in the division. Relay teams must meet a qualifying time and be in the top 24 times. San Manuel had the Girls 200 Freestyle Relay team of Amara Apuron, Cierra Austin, Nicole Primero-Predgo, and Jazelle Sanchez achieve a qualifying time. However when all the qualifying meets were completed, it became evident that it was not one of the fastest 24 times so the Relay team would not be competing. Wayne Newman qualified in three individual events and his times were among the fastest 32 times in the Breaststroke, Backstroke

Miner Swimmer competes at Division II State Meetand Individual Medley (IM). Since rules allow competition in only two individual events, Newman opted to compete in the 200 yard Individual Medley (IM) and the 100 Yard Breaststroke. During the preliminary session on Friday, Newman’s first event was the

grueling 200 IM. Sporting a bald shaved head, he went out hard with an extremely talented field, but was unable to hang on to qualify for the finals. At the Championship Meet, the top 16 swimmers in preliminaries advance to the finals. In the Breaststroke,

Newman was able to make the cut, finishing 16th, extending his season for another day. On Saturday, the best high School Swimmers in Arizona put on a great show for the large crowd at the Skyline Aquatic Center. Newman made the most of his moment

in the spotlight by moving up two places in the Breaststroke finals to finish 14th. Newman now has the distinction of being the first Miner swimmer to compete and place at the Division II Championship Swim Meet. Way to go, Wayne!

Saturday, Nov. 19, from 7 – 11 am, is slated for the Oracle Union all you can eat breakfast, bake sale and rummage sale. The breakfast and rummage sale will benefit the church, while the proceeds from the bake sale will be used to

purchase Christmas gifts for children held in Pinal County Protective Services, as well as to help needy families during the Christmas holidays. The breakfast menu includes biscuits, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs with ham, orange juice, tea and coffee,

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity football team exited the Division V State Playoffs with a first round loss to the #2 seed Yuma Catholic Shamrocks (10-1) on Friday night at Ricky Gwynn Stadium in Yuma. The Miners, although playing in the rain and wind throughout the night, could not contain the high powered Shamrock offense taking the loss 49 – 0. Yuma scored on their opening drive with running back Kody Hazlett taking it in from 32 yards out, the Shamrocks never looked back – scoring early and often. This was the third time in five years Yuma has taken San Manuel out of the playoffs in the first round, the Miners lost 7-49 in 2007 and 6-48 in 2009. Yuma will advance to the quarterfinals to face Round Valley 35 – 0 winners over Willcox at Higley High School on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The Miners compiled a total of 108 offensive yards - all on the ground.
