Editor, San Manuel Miner: The thought of turning to family, friends, and strangers to ask for a “random act of kindness” can be overwhelm-

ing. The question: “How can I help you?” needs to change so we ask: “How can we help each other build the world we both live in?”

Letter to the Editor: Th e Kari Darimont Benefi t Fund Anything that is human is mentionable, and if it is men-tionable, it can be manage-able. When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, upsetting, and scary. I ask you to take a step to join our community dedicated to the issue that surrounds “death.” We can save a life! Each hour of our life on this earth is irreplaceable. It is ours –by virtue of being born and being alive. Valuing life

that way enables each of us to know that we matter. A ran-dom act of kindness honors the essence of each and every one of us during our brief existence here on earth. It takes a village! None of us makes it alone. We come into this world nine months into debt, and thereafter, the inter-dependence just multiplies. We need others – and others need us. that is the wisdom behind the African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a

child.” Celebrations as well as catastrophes are opportuni-ties that bring communities together for the common good. As budgets shrink and expenses grow, wherever you are on your journey, everyone has something they can give. It’s about heart and spirit. It’s about “priceless money.” No insurance coverage, no assets that can be drawn on, and a hospital that declares, “No money, you die,” is

where this family, that has given so much to our com-munity is at. Our core is our humanity: our capacity to care for each other, to come to each other’s rescue, to stand up for what is right, to seek justice, and to honor the gift of life as the ultimate gift. That sense of meaning and fellowship uplifts us. It imparts energy that is a life-force. The Navajos call the spirit that animates us the

Kari is a strength in our community, in our lives. Many events are planned to help raise money for her bone marrow transplant; please support all of them. However, an immediate need for funds is urged. Please dig deep and give whatever you can, no matter how small. Upcoming events are the ‘Kids Caring for Kari’ Car Wash on March 17 from 9 a.m. – noon in the Village Square; and a horseback ride, starting at Campo Bonito and ending at 3 C Ranch, on March 25. Helen “Nana” Mejia was surprised by her family in celebration of her 95th birthday on Feb. 17. For this very special day, traveling from California, Raul and Marcia Vargas came from Upland and Elvia Stork arrived from North Hills. Alfredo made his way from Tucson, and her grandchildren also came: Pier Iberti from San Fransico, Tracie Vargas from Chicago, Micheal and Daniel Mejia from Tucson. Of course, her good friend and neighbor, Mary Kacenak from San Manuel, was invited. The day was festive and fun. Laughter and reminiscing were the order of the day, along with a stream of phone calls from other family members, and the delightful delivery of four dozen tulips from grandson Cesar Vargas and his wife Amy, who reside in Lausanne, Switzerland, and great-granddaughter, Alex.

By John Hernandez Imagine one of your family members being seriously ill and undergoing medical treatments which have a debilitating effect on their health and physical appearance. After months of treatment the physician comes to you and says that the treatments are not working and your wife, your mother, your best friend needs a bone marrow transplant to be given a chance to live! Then the hospital tells you that the procedure is not covered by your medical insurance and it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. What would you do? What can you do? This is what the Darimont family is facing right now. Kari Darimont has an aggressive form of leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant that their medical insurance will not cover. If you know Kari, you know she is one of the kindest and sweetest ladies you will ever meet. Her husband Adrian and the family are going through some diffi cult times right now and can use some assistance. The Darimont family has given much to the community through their businesses and their personal lives. They have employed many people in the area and are always willing to give to different organizations and charities. Now they can use the community’s help. A group of friends from Oracle under the umbrella of the Tri-Community are coming together to fi nd ways to raise money to help Kari. Friends from SaddleBrooke and Tucson are also helping. The group calls themselves “Karing For Kari.” They have set up the Kari Darimont Benefi t Fund with Wells Fargo Bank. You can walk into any branch and donate direct to the fund. You can also donate at the Oracle Inn. Collection jars will soon be set up around the community and many fundraisers are being

Karing for Kari: A community comes togetherplanned. There will be a car wash at the Village Square in Oracle this Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. until noon. It is being put on by “Kids Karing For Kari” a group of kids from Sierra Oaks School. The idea originated with one of the kids. On Sunday March 25, there will be a benefi t horseback ride from Campo Bonito to the 3C Ranch. Children aged seven and up are welcome to ride. The ride begins at 11 a.m. and will be less than three hours long. Riders are urged to come early to be fi tted for your horse. At the 3C Ranch guests will be treated to live music provided by the “Wild Ride” band. Refreshments will be served including beer and soft drinks, followed by a dinner. The cost of the all inclusive trail ride, dinner and entertainment is $150 per person. Horses are included but you can bring your own if you feel more comfortable riding a familiar horse. If you don’t ride, you can still come out to the 3C Ranch and enjoy the dinner and music. The cost will be the same. Please make out checks to the Kari Darimont Benefi t Fund. Tickets can be purchased at the Oracle Inn or contact Lori at (520) 465-4115. Rooms are

available at the 3C Ranch but are limited in number. Contact the Oracle Inn for room availability. Ask for Nicholas, Stephanie or Lori. Karing For Kari will be organizing other fundraisers throughout the coming months. Keep your eye out for announcements and

please give what you can. The group can also use volunteers to help out with events and if you or your organization/business would like to help out, Karing for Kari meets Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. at the Oracle Inn. The people of the Tri-Community have

always helped out each other in hard times. Please show Kari and the Darimont

family that we care. Your prayers and positive thoughts are also welcome.

Compiled by Mila Lira The price of Copper settled at $3.86 a pound at the close of business on Monday night. This price has remained steady over the past couple of weeks. Resolution Copper Resolution Copper continues to move forward with their mine feasibility plan and construction of the number nine and ten shafts. Mine officials expect to have a mine plan of operations complete early in the second quarter of 2012. As of this week crews working to construct the Number 10 shaft are 5202 feet below the earth’s surface. The rehabilitation of the Number Nine shaft is currently at the 2660 level. Resolution Copper has also introduced a bill into the Arizona State Legislature to allow for miners to work underground for up to 12 hours per day. At this time Arizona State law only allows for

underground miners to work underground for eight hours per day. This bill is currently under review. Resolution Copper is also a premier sponsor of the 24th Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival this weekend. Several regional mining companies and contractors will be having demonstrations booths during the festival.Curis – Florence Copper Curis has announced that they are hiring for a Senior Project Engineer. For more information on this position visit their website at: http://www.florencecopper.com.Rosemont Copper Augusta Resource Corporation provided an update on the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding review from the regional Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its Rosemont Copper project. The San Francisco

Environmental Protection Agency office is the final agency to submit comments to the USFS on the draft EIS, joining the 25,000 comments of which approximately 10,000 have been characterized as form letters or duplicates by the USFS. The EPA review was provided approximately 30 days past the official close of the public comment period, due to a request from the EPA to the USFS for additional time. The receipt of these comments now allows the USFS to complete its response to comments, and a final EIS for the Rosemont Copper project along with the Record of Decision. “This is a standard part of what a regional EPA office does,” said Rod Pace, Rosemont Copper’s president and CEO. “It’s part of the rigorous review process that leads to a robust final EIS required by the National Environmental

Mining ReportPolicy Act.” The next steps for Rosemont Copper will be to finalize the air and aquifer protection permits by the State of Arizona, complete the Fish and Wildlife Service consultation process and develop the draft mitigation plans for species protection, mine reclamation and site closure. Much of the technical and analytical work to complete these next steps has already been completed and peer-reviewed, including hydrology studies and air modeling for the project site. The peer-review process has been on-going for more than two years.

“Our leadership has always understood that our project would receive the highest scrutiny from all local state and federal agencies,” Mr. Pace added. “We want to build a mine, using the latest technologies and highest standards for conservation and protection of air and water resources. The extensive review of the draft EIS by the EPA, as well as all of the other commenting agencies, produces the input needed by the USFS to produce the most defendable final decision documentation possible.” In addition to the final comments on the draft EIS, the EPA is continuing its

role to provide comment on the ACOE’s 404 permit application for Rosemont Copper. The EPA has submitted a 3b letter, which was issued last week, allowing the EPA to preserve their position for future discussions and negotiations as the final Section 404 permit documentation is drafted. The Rosemont team is committed to work with the USFS, ACOE and EPA to ensure that all questions are answered fully and successfully and that the project meets all standards addressed by the more than 300 studies and technical reports conducted over the past six years.

The open forums conducted for the community and the employees of the college will provide participants an opportunity to make direct input on the qualities they feel CAC’s new president should have. The discussions will center

The geographic areas of the newly drawn legislative districts will greatly impact the present-day Legislative District 23 (LD23). The IRC divided Pinal County/LD 23 into three districts with the City of Casa Grande divided in two. Representative Frank Pratt announced today that he will be running for the office of Arizona State Representative in the new Legislative District 8 (LD8). “We are keeping our home of 22 years in Casa Grande and that will place me in the new Legislative District 8,” Pratt said. “Pinal County and LD23 have grown so much that I was certain there would be changes. Some of these changes are difficult.” He went on to say that “I will miss representing Maricopa, Stanfield, Arizona City, Ak-Chin, Ft. McDowell Yavapai Nation, and other areas drawn out of the new district. However, I look forward to making new friends in rural communities like Globe, Miami, San Tan Village and many others now included in LD8. I am truly excited about the tremendous opportunities ahead.” Pratt was born and raised in rural Arizona. “My father moved from Ohio to Globe, Arizona. My mother was born in Florence. I was born in Florence and lived there until my junior year of high school. I would have graduated from Florence High School had my family not moved to Maricopa,” he said. “My family roots continue to run deep in rural Arizona. I have several family members living in Legislative District 8 including family living in Globe. I am very familiar with the areas of Legislative District 8 and will enjoy spending more time in the mountains of Pinal and Gila County.”

Domestic violence can strike anywhere. It isn’t just a problem among lower-income communities or of women. Many might be surprised to learn that domestic violence doesn’t just involve adults and spouses, but instead reaches out to involve elderly parents, children, and neighbors as well. Tex Whitney, President of the Board of the SaddleBrooke Coalition Against Domestic Violence (SCAVD), reports that SCAVD and Safe Journey House are sponsoring a morning-long seminar, “Domestic Violence 101: Understanding Domestic Violence Dynamics.” The seminar is scheduled for Thursday, March 29, from 9 a.m. to noon at the MountainView Clubhouse, Ballroom, in SaddleBrooke, at 38759 South MountainView Boulevard. The guest speaker will be Erin Callinan, from the AZ Coalition against Domestic Violence, Arizona’s statewide legal advocacy hotline for victims and survivors of domestic violence. The morning presentations are designed to help residents in our area learn the causes of domestic violence, and how to recognize the signs

of domestic violence. It will help answer questions about how to help someone who is being abused and how to help someone who is an abuser. Whitney noted that domestic violence is not always easy to recognize, and that sometimes the person suspected of being abusive is actually the one being abused. And, men can be abused as well as women, as can elderly relatives. Domestic abuse is often overlooked, excused, or denied, especially when the abuse is psychological rather than physical. Children become victims as well, and patterns of abuse they witness will often be passed on to the next generation. The goals of SCAVD, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, are to raise funds, increase community awareness of domestic violence, and to support local Pinal County agencies involved in assisting victims of domestic abuse. One of the group’s success stories is helping transform Safe Journey House, a donated home in San Manuel, into a resource and advocacy center for domestic abuse victims. Safe Journey House is not a shelter, but provides counseling for residents of Eastern Pinal

County, including Catalina, SaddleBrooke, Eagle Crest Ranch, Oracle, Mammoth, San Manuel, Dudleyville, Hayden, Winkelman and Kearny. Certified advocates are available for consultation at Safe Journey House Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who call after office ours are given emergency numbers via a message. Two coming events will help support SCAVD’s efforts: the “Treats and Talents Auction” on Wednesday, March 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and “Ladies Night Out in the Brooke,” Wednesday, March 28, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both events will be held at SaddleBrooke Clubhouse, 64500 East SaddleBrooke Boulevard (825-3048) and a portion of the proceeds will go directly to the organization. A recent fundraiser, a Greek dinner at It’s Greek to Me in Catalina on January 26, was a total sell-out, with 80 persons packing the Catalina restaurant. Whitney reports that SCAVD is also actively seeking new members and volunteers. For more information about the group, contact Sue Minney at [email protected].

Pratt said that the biggest issue for the new district is improving economic growth. “We need to be focused on attracting and expanding the number of quality jobs in our communities,” he said. “I have been self-employed or a small businessman in this region most all of my life. I am committed to policies that will lead to more job creation. Without good jobs in our area, family members may consider moving away. Right now, it really is all about jobs, jobs, jobs.” Representative Pratt serves as Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and a member of both the Commerce and

Environment Committees. This legislative session he is also serving on the Fast and Furious and Homeland Security Sub-committees. On the national scene he is on the Legislative

Energy Horizon Institute, Education Commission of the States, Council of State Governments Executive Committee, and member of the Border Legislative Conference.

FLORENCE – Residents in the Oracle area will soon see county-contracted crews working to improve roads in the area. A slurry seal is slated to be applied beginning March 12. Nearly 70,000 square yards, or approximately 8.5 lane miles, will be improved. The project will involve approximately 767 tons of rock/sand aggregate and 107 tons of asphalt emulsion. Southwest Slurry Seal will be performing the work under a contract with Pinal County. This pavement

preservation project is likely to begin Monday, March 12. However, this type of road project is highly dependent on weather conditions. Residents will be notified by a paper notice or flyer to indicate the date their streets will be upgraded. There may also be directional signs on major roads. Residents should note and follow the instructions or information contained on the leaflet or on posted signs. A complete list of affected streets is attached. Please be alert to possible traffic delays. Drivers are urged to

obey the speed limit and all posted signs and barricades while traveling through these construction zones. Employees in the Pinal County Public Works Department appreciate your patience and understanding as they work to improve your drive throughout the county.
