African Lion is an exercise between the Kingdom of Morocco and the U.S. that involves more than 2,000 U.S. service members and approximately 900 members of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. The exercise serves as a way for both U.S. and Moroccan military members to hone their skills and learn to work together to a accomplish missions. “It’s a great experience to work with a foreign military. I actually get to communicate with the Moroccan military, so I get to learn their language and they learn English,” said Mota, a bulk fuel specialist assigned to the 6th Engineer Support Battalion, Tucson. The Mammoth Police Report is submitted by the department. According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. June 19 Officers attempted to locate a vehicle that had been involved in suspicous activity in Hayden. June 19 A fistfight was reported in the 700 block of Highway 77. Mammoth Firefighters were dispatched to assist one of the persons involved who had received injuries. June 21 Mammoth Fire assisted a patient in the 15000 block of River Road who was having post surgical complications. The patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance. June 21 A report of a water leak was turned over to Mammoth Public Works. June 21 A report of a bobcat sighting in the 500 block of North Main Street was turned over to Pinal County Animal Control. June 22 Criminal damage to the cattle fence off Main Street was reported.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has issued a sex offender notification for the Mammoth area. Charles Allen Larmore, 29, who resides in the 20100 block of South River Road, Mammoth, has been classified as a level three sex offender. He is a white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes and is heavily tattooed. His offense was child molestation and he was convicted in 2005.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the above information pursuant to A.R.S. 13-3825, the Community Notification on Sex Offender Law. The offender in this publication is living in Mammoth, Arizona. Notification must be made when certain sex offenders are released from the Arizona State Prison, accepted under an interstate compact or released from the county jail back into the community. One (low risk to the community), Level Two (intermediate risk to the community), and Level Three (high risk to the community). By John Hernandez Sites have been surveyed. Several places considered. It’s all over now except for the final announcement. Where will the Verizon Tower in Oracle go? A meeting was held at the Oracle Community Center Thursday evening to announce the proposed sites for a Verizon cell tower. The following three sites were identified by Verizon Engineering for consideration as site locations:• The top site selected by

Verizon is the original proposed site behind and above the Oracle Market. This site was previously submitted for a special use permit. It consists of a 64’ tall monopine tower. Engineers pointed out that it meets the FAA design guidelines regarding proximity to the Oracle heliport. It does not require lighting and it can be designed for additional carriers.• This selection is located on the east end of Oracle adjacent to the existing 80’

tall AT&T tower. Due to two sets of antennas on the AT&T tower, Verizon would have to build a tower 150 – 175’ tall to meet the same coverage requirements of site #1. The tower design would be similar to the AT&T tower and will require an independent review of design guidelines related to the existing Oracle heliport. This tower would not be camouflaged.• The third choice is located west of site one in a trailer park. This tower would have

to be approximately 125 – 150’ high to meet the coverage objectives of site #1. A design similar to option #2 would be used depending on further review with Pinal County Planning and Zoning. An independent review of design guidelines related to the existing heliport in Oracle will be required. More than 40 concerned citizens attended the meeting. Locations were discussed by Chad Ward and Ross Hopkins. They answered questions from

Top three sites for Oracle Verizon Tower selectedthe audience and listened to their concerns. Pinal County Supervisor Peter Rios also spoke and answered questions. A straw poll was taken at the meeting. Site two was overwhelmingly the favorite of the audience with no one opposed to the site. Site one had six people in favor of it with most of the rest of the

people in attendance opposed to it. There was little interest in site three either for or against it. Verizon Wireless will now select one of these proposed sites to submit for approval of a special use permit by Pinal County. If their site is approved, construction will probably begin sometime in 2012.

Sheriff’s Office issues sex offender notificationcommunity is a safer community. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may or may not live. Unless court ordered restrictions exist, this offender is constitutionally free to live wherever he chooses. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate, or harass sex offenders will not be tolerated. Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but because of Megan’s Law, law enforcement is now able to share this information with you. Police caution that any use of this information to threaten, intimidate, harass or create an act against another person will result in prosecution.

CAC’s College for Kids lets young scientists experiment with alternate power sources

Lunch as science experiment ...Last week, students attending the Central Arizona College’s College for Kids program experimented with solar power. They converted pizza boxes to solar ovens and cooked their lunches inside the mini ovens. Of course, they had to document their progress in their notebooks. After spending so much time in the classroom and working on their lunches, the students got a chance to cool off by running through the sprinklers and being mowed (er, hosed?) down by Jordan and his super deluxe water gun! By Diana Stirling The silkscreen t-shirt workshop was a big success! If you’d like to see photos of the process and all the great shirts that were created, take a look at our website: library.townofmammoth.us. Join us Monday, July 18 as we celebrate World Listening Day with at soundwalk around Mammoth. July 18 was chosen to commemorate the birthday of one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement. What is acoustic ecology? It is the awareness of the soundscapes around us and how they evolve and change. We’ll meet at the library at 6:00 p.m. It will be an easy short walk. Please bring water and appropriate footwear. I have sad news to report. Lana’s last day at the library will be Tuesday, July 19. She and her husband Dean are moving to Corvallis, Oregon. Please stop by to wish her well in her new adventures. For more information about any of our programs, or for help signing up to write online movie and book reviews, contact us at 520-487-2026 or come by the library, 125 Clark Street (in the basement of Town Hall) in Mammoth.

It’s FREE FUN!

Are you ready for a ton of fun at Mega Sports Camp?

Troop 822 from the Tri-Community ventured West of Flagstaff to Boy Scout Camp Raymond. They were accompanied by their Scoutmaster, Terry Newman, Assistant Scoutmaster, John Eckert and Committee Member, Jane Newman. Camp Raymond hosted 28 troops totaling approximately 540 scouts during the week of June 27 through July 2. The troops attending were from Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and California. This was the third summer camp for Senior Patrol Leader Alec Newman, a Star scout and Patrol Leader Martin Parra, a Second Class scout. It was the second summer camp for Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Michael Sanchez, a Star scout, Patrol Leader Mikey Garcia, a Scout and Assistant Patrol Leader Robert Sweeney, a Tenderfoot scout. It was the first summer camp for Quartermaster Benjamin Parry, a Tenderfoot scout, Aaron Sims, Bryson Soto, Anthony Soto and Alex Valdez. The Troop arrived at Camp Raymond on Sunday, June 26, around 4 p.m. after a six-hour trip. The scouts had their camp setup and dinner eaten before the sun

went down. The boys were very excited and were full of energy, but were up by 5:30 a.m. on Monday to start their week of camp. During the week the scouts attended numerous merit badge classes and had fun participating in the Black Bear Swim, Tenderfoot Run and Fortress Hike. They took on the extra challenge of a camp service project where they did trail maintenance which drew compliments from both the Camp Ranger and the Head Commissioner. They attended the Order of the Arrow call out, a first for nine of the scouts attending. On Wednesday morning they raised the flags for Camp Raymond, cleaned the common showers Friday morning and took on kitchen patrol duty for Friday lunch, both serving the meal and cleaning up the dining hall afterwards. Daily they cleaned their campsite; hiked to and from merit badge classes, meals and camp activities; and worked on their Flintlock trail awards. The scouts earned the following merit badges: Alec Newman –Pottery, Rowing and Soil & Water Conservation; Michael Sanchez – Canoeing, Leatherwork, Pottery and Rifle Shooting; Martin Parra

scores were kept, but team pride was on the line for every event. Out of the 20 events held, the Sea Lions won 18 and the Dolphins won 2. Sea Lion Coaches were thrilled about the performance of Sea Lion Swimmers. Sea Lions managed to win many close races in the final meet before the League
