The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from the daily logs, based on the information provided by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Aug. 26 Ricky Mikulewicz Ponce, 32, Oracle, was arrested in the 2100 block of Camino Amigo, Oracle, on warrants for driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and interfering with judicial proceedings. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. Aug. 27 Property damage was reported in

the 1100 block of North Hunter Circle, Oracle. Vehicle at the residence was found damaged. Aug. 27 A five-year-old child was bit by a dog in the 500 block of South Tierra Verde Street, San Manuel. The child had a small laceration above the eye. Pinal County Animal Control was notified of the incident. Aug. 28 Criminal damage was reported in the 62000 block of East Sandlewood Road, SaddleBrooke. Graffiti was painted on a private property wall. Aug. 28 Burglary was reported in the 61000 block of East Eagle Heights Drive, Eagle

Editor, Miner: The American Legion is a veteran’s service organization dedicated to serving all the men, women, and their families, past, present and future who serve our great country with such selflessness. Red Friday is a day to show support, every week, to our men and women who are serving in our military. By wearing red every Friday we are announcing somewhat silently that we are grateful to our soldiers for their bravery and sacrifice. Whether you support the war or not, that’s not the important part. What is, however, is supporting our fellow man. Without them, we would not have the liberty of living in a

free country. It is because of them that we love and pray freely to whomever we choose. Much like the support for our military, we celebrate them a couple of times a year but then they become out of sight, out of mind. Maybe we can do more; maybe we should. It’s the least we can do; after all, while we sleep tucked away warm in our beds at night many are dying, defending this great country we love and call home. The American Legion is starting a nationwide program, Red Shirt Fridays, and are asking all our American Legion members to start this Red Shirt Fridays in their local Post and to see if they can get their local Community

or Communities to get involved in this program. It’s our way of showing our troops that we do care and that they are not forgotten. So, why not join us? As George Washington said, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, is directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars are treated and appreciated.” Every Friday, make it a “Red Shirt Friday”. Aug. 30 Theft of copper wire was reported in the 100 block of South Veterans Memorial Boulevard, San Manuel. Aug. 30 Assault was reported at the San Manuel Junior-Senior High School. Two 15-year-old students were detained. Aug. 31 A vehicle’s license plate was reported missing in the 3900 block of West Highway 77, Oracle. Aug. 31 Theft of auto parts was reported in the 1800 block of West American Avenue, Oracle. Aug. 31 PCSO was called to shut down Old Webb Road due to flash flooding. Aug. 31 Vicious dogs were reported in the 100 block of South McNab Parkway, San Manuel. Animal Control was notified. Aug. 31 Theft of a dog was reported in the 400 block of South Tierra Verde Place, San Manuel. Sept. 1 Assault was reported in the 2600 block of West El Paseo, Oracle. A student was injured by another student with a pencil. The school handled the incident, but requested that a report be made. Sept. 1 Burglary was reported in the 500 block of Ladera Street, San Manuel.

By Jennifer R. Carnes A friend of mine once told me a story about when she moved to the United States. Fleur was born and raised in South Africa. Her father was on the tsetse fly commission and would fly all over Africa preventing outbreaks of the biting insects that cause sleeping sickness. Fleur told me that she was in Africa during a particularly bloody revolution back in the early 1960s. She and her family woke one morning to find their houseboy (servant) hanging from the tree in the front yard. That was the point, she said, her father decided to move the family to the United States, a country that he considered the most civilized country in the world. Move they did. She said that President Kennedy was assassinated on one of the first days that she lived in this country. Fleur told me that she remembered asking herself was the US really more civilized? November 22, 1963 is a date that anyone alive during the time will never forget. January 28, 1986 is another date. Do you remember where you were when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded killing all on board? April 19, 1995 was the date of the Oklahoma City Bombing. And then comes September 11, 2001. It’s been 10 years since terrorists flew airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and crashed another in the Pennsylvania countryside, killing thousands. Do you remember where you were? It was a Tuesday. I was putting on the finishing touches on articles for the Superior Sun and Copper Basin News and readying

I remember staring in disbelief at the television watching the planes crash into the Twin Towers, over and over again. It was hard to look away. I remember crying for those who had lost their lives in the crash and praying that those trapped would get out. I’m certain that most

Americans felt the same way. I know of two groups who will be hosting September 11 memorial services. In the Copper Basin area, there will be a National Day of Service and Remembrance at the Pinal County building in the town of Kearny at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. This is to honor those who were lost during the events of 9/11 and those

who rose and serve in the communities in which we all live. In Mammoth, the local Knights of Columbus will host the annual “Blue Mass” for police, firefighters and first

responders at 11 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Knights of Columbus established the “Blue Mass” after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. If you can’t attend either

service, then consider flying your American Flag on Sunday. Show your patriotism and support for those who died during this most painful time in our recent history. And never forget …

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, the Knights of Columbus Council 5542 will hold their annual Blue Mass at 11 am at Blessed Sacrament church in Mammoth, according to coordinator Randy Rodriguez. “The Knights of Columbus instituted the Blue Mass for the police, firefighters, paramedics and all those who responded so quickly and so bravely after we were attacked on 9-11, 2001,” Rodriguez said. “We’d like to invite all local police and fire departments, as well as county and state law enforcement, first aid and search and rescue professionals to wear their uniforms and join us in commemorating the actions of their brothers and sisters ten years ago, and to pray for their safety, and to give thanks for our local first responders,” Rodriguez said. Priority parking will be given to those who may be called into service during the Mass and refreshments will be served in the parish hall.

A body discovered in a remote area on the property of the Sierra Tucson treatment facility on Aug. 30 has been identified by the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kenneth Litwack, 71, from Newport Beach, California. On Aug. 12, Ken Litwack, 71, self-admitted into the Sierra Tucson Rehabilitation Center located southeast of SaddleBrooke. The last time anyone saw Litwack was Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Sierra Tucson property last week after staff members discovered the body during a horse ride. Litwack was reported missing from the facility on August 16. After staff cleared the grounds and informed PCSO that Litwack was missing, deputies searched the perimeter with K-9 and also flew the area but nothing was found. Litwack’s cause of death has not been determined. There was no evidence at the scene of any foul play, said Elias Johnson, Public Information Officer for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.

Chelsey Velasquez of Evanston, Wyoming, the 15 year old granddaughter of Henry and Carol Velasquez of San Manuel and Sonny and Beverly Madrid of Evanston, now wears the title and sash of Miss Teen Wyoming after outperforming 22 competitors at the Miss Teen of America pageant held earlier this month in Casper, Wyoming. Mr. and Mrs. Velasquez are so proud, they asked to share the following article, originally published in the Uinta County Herald written by Shayna Marcure, with local readers. “I look forward to helping within this community, becoming more involved in school activities and, overall, making a difference in Evanston,” Chelsey told the Herald. “I want to set an example for girls all over Wyoming. With this title, I’m taking on a lot more responsibility and I have definitely raised my own personal standards.” Velasquez plans on

heading up a community cleanup group that will hold weekly service projects, while she continues achieving in school and within the community. The winner of the pageant, which doubles as a scholarship recognition program, is automatically awarded a $1,000 scholarship to any college or university and a $500 savings bond. Despite the cash prize, for Valesquez the most rewarding aspect of the entire competition was meeting and befriending other competitors who share similar goals. “I became so close to all those girls,” she said. The competition is based on academic achievement, community service efforts, personal development, beauty, personality, projection and poise, according to Valesquez. The 2011 pageant was not the first the 15 year old has participated in. “I competed two years ago, but this time I was much more confident in

Members of Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue last week located a man who called 9-1-1 late Tuesday morning, after he ran out of water while moun-tain biking along a trail Southeast of SaddleBrooke. The 28-year-old man from Tucson told deputies he was on the second day of a ride from Mount Lemmon to Or-acle when he ran out of water and began suffering from heat exhaustion. Using a map and landmarks, the man led two members from PCSO Search and Rescue to his location along the Charleau Gap trail. He told deputies he underestimated the heat and con-sumed two camelback containers of water faster than anticipated; there was also limited shade to escape direct sunlight. The man received medical attention at the scene and was given a ride by Search and Rescue to Boulder Ranch where relatives live. Before attempting a similar ride, the man said he will wait until temperatures cool down.

By John Hernandez The Oracle State Park which has been closed for almost two years may open on a part time basis next year. The opening of the park is contingent on a funding plan being worked out between Arizona State Parks and the Friends of Oracle State Park. At the present time the key to the plan will be for the Friends of Oracle State Park to raise $21,000 in funding for the park. If the money

can be raised, the tentative plan calls for the park to open three days a week for student environmental education programs and on Saturdays to the public. Originally the plan was to only open it for the students but the Friends of Oracle State Park fought to have at least one day for the public. Through negotiations the state will budget funds for the re-opening of the park but only if the FOSP can come up with the $21,000

Good news for the Oracle State Park: park to possibly open on part time basis if funding can be secured

agreed upon. The public and students would have access to the Historic Kannally Ranch House, hiking trails and the high-desert-landscapes of the parks. Oracle State Park is the only park in the state that is not open. Cindy Krupicka, President of FOSP, and Treasurer Mary Ann Pogany said that the Friends of Oracle State Park will match donations from the public up to the first $10,000. “We are excited,” Cindy said. “We have been waiting for two years to get this going. “Let’s get our hidden treasure open again.” Besides the student

environmental education programs, Friends would like to have family environmental programs and activities such as hiking, bird walks, naturalist speakers, garden and grounds tours and tours of the Kannally Ranch house. “We want to make the Saturdays that the park is open fun for everyone,”

Cindy said. The Friends are optimistic about re-opening the park and hope to open it in the Spring or Fall of 2012. Help is needed from the public to reopen the park. FOSP will be sending out letters to donors and businesses in the next three

By John Hernandez The Living Word Chapel’s Seventh Annual Golf Tournament was a success this weekend. The tournament, held at SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club, was won by the team of Mike Miranda, Rick Hogan, Quido Miranda and Mitch Early. The second place team was Richard Lopez, Ross Lopez, Dawson Jones and Jared Thayer. Finishing in third place was the team of Edward Ruiz, James Marrufo, David Marrufo and Rosario Coronado. The tournament offered lots of prizes, good food and a lot of fun for everyone. Cheering on the ‘Boys of Fall’ ...

By Frank Smith The San Manuel varsity volleyball team fell to the visiting Miami Lady Vandals last week, losing three sets to one. In the first set, the Lady Miners lost 25 – 19, in the second set San Manuel lost again 25 – 19, the Lady Miners showed a little fight winning the third set 25 – 19, but not hold off the Lady Vandals losing 25 – 18 in the final set. Contributing for the Lady Miners were Mackenzie White with three blocks, 18 digs and five assists; Alexis Garibay with eight digs, one kill, five assists and one Ace; Sierra Cruce with six blocks, one dig, one kill and two assists;

Felicia Gomez with six digs, two kills and 16 assists; and Tisha Reidhead with six digs and one assist. SM Head Coach Deanne Brewer said, “We played very well together... a lot different from last year’s team. I have a positive feeling about this group of girls. We have a lot of versatility and I think we will have a great season.” The Lady Miners will have a very busy schedule this week: they hosted Immaculate Heart on Tuesday, will host Florence today at 5 and 6 p.m., travel to Ray on Thursday and finish the week at the Florence Invitational on Saturday.

Lady Miners fall to Miami at the net


By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners outran the Santa Cruz Dust Devils 33 – 7 picking up their second win of the season to start out with 2 – 0 record on season. The Miners received the opening kick off at their own 20 yard line, the Miners were forced to punt after only gaining six yards on three plays. The Miners punt was short giving the Devils good field possession. Santa Cruz started out at the Miners 31 yard line. The Miner defense flexed their muscle – stopping the Devils on a fourth and three to get the ball back at their own 23 yard line. The Miners rode the wave of momentum driving the ball downfield 77 yards in 10 plays capping off the drive with running back Jared Gonzalez scoring on a one yard run into the end zone. The point after touchdown kick by Daniel Perez was good for a 7 – 0 lead with 3:04 left in the first quarter. The Miners took 5:19 on the drive. Santa Cruz lined up at their own 19 yard line after the kick off, the Devils drove down to the Miners 45 yard line in seven plays where on the eighth play the running back lost hold of the ball after a bone jarring hit from a Miner defender with linebacker Vincent Valdez recovering the fumble. In the second quarter, the Miners would capitalize on the miscue, on the first play of the drive quarterback Marcos Sierra hit tight end Phil Adami with a pass down to the Devils 36 yard line for

a 19 yard gain. Running back Gonzalez, Vincent Valdez and John Ruiz would combine to take the ball down to the 20 yard line. Sierra then rolled to his right looking to pass, tucking the ball and running it in from 20 yards out for the touchdown. The PAT kick by Perez was good for a 14 – 0 lead with 8:07 on the clock. The Miners drove 55 yards in seven plays taking 3:07 on the drive. On the next possession for Santa Cruz, the Miners defense continued to keep the Dust Devils at bay forcing the punt after a three and out, the punt was short returning the favor – giving the Miners good field position. San Manuel lined up at the Dust Devils 44 yard line, the Miners took the ball down to the two yard line in five plays where, on the sixth play of the drive, full back Daniel Perez punched it in from two yards out for the touchdown. The PAT kick by Perez was good for a 21 – 0 lead with 3:50 left in the half. The Miners drove 44 yards in 3:37. The Dust Devils received the ball once more before the half but were forced to punt again after a three and out. The Miners took possession at their own 34 yard line but could not get a drive going as time ran out on the first half with the Miners taking a 21 – 0 lead into the half. In the second half, Santa Cruz received the kick off at their own 14 yard line. The Devils fumbled the ball on a pitch losing nine yards on the play but continued to drive the ball

down field. The Devils were forced to punt eight plays later but got the ball back at the San Manuel 32 yard line after the Miners fumbled the ball on the return scoring six plays later on a 17 yard pass into the back of the end zone. The PAT was good for a 7 – 21 score with 4:17 on the clock in the third quarter. The Miners would answer right back. San Manuel lined up at their own 39 yard line and marched the ball down to the 11 yard line six plays capped off by a 11 yard touchdown run by Valdez with :11 left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was no good for a 27 – 7 score. Now in the fourth quarter, the Miners defense came up strong again as they got the ball back on downs at the Miners 49 yard line. San Manuel would score for the final time of the night. The Miners hit pay dirt again eight plays later driving 50 yards down to the one yard line with Gonzalez capping off the drive with a one yard run into the end zone. The PAT was no good for a 33 – 7 score with 5:01 left in the game. The Miners defense would hold the Devils the rest of the quarter to secure the victory. San Manuel compiled 362 yards total offense, with 323yards rushing on 43 attempts, and 39 yards passing on six attempts In the air Marcos Sierra went 3 for 6 for 39 yards, hauling in the passes were Phil Adami with one reception for 20yards, Clark Montano had one Quarterback Marcos Sierra (11) turns the corner for a nice gain. This stable of backs can compete with anybody in the state. However, they would not be able to run easily without the great performance of the Offensive line. This group led by Senior Rene Ortega has racked up 13 rushing Touchdowns in the last two games. Great Job and keep up the great work O-line! “The defense has been fantastic also led by Senior Inside Linebacker Daniel Perez who racked up 14 tackles against the Devils. The defense has only let up seven points in two games. Great Job and keep hunting for goose eggs!” The Miners will host Tombstone on Friday night with kick off at 6 p.m.

By John Hernandez The Mountain Vista Cougars football team lost itsfirst game of the season 38 to 8 to San Carlos. The game started out well when the Cougars’ Ryan Chavez ran the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion was good and they led 8 – 0. Coach Richard Jennings said the game was closer than the score indicates. The team made a lot of mental mistakes which cost them. Two Cougar touchdowns were called back because of penalties and turnovers, which led to two scores by San Carlos. The Cougars are inexperienced this year as they only have three kids on the team who have played junior high football. “The team’s morale is good and they seem to be improving,” said Coach Jennings. The Cougars will host Miami on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m.

By John Hernandez Steve Montano has put a lot of work and money into the new health and fitness gym that has opened up in San Manuel. Steve has personal knowledge of the importance of exercise in keeping you healthy and in good shape – Steve is a diabetic. He heard that exercise helped control blood sugar. So he started exercising. He began a regular routine of exercising and watching his diet. Now, he is no longer on medication to control his blood sugar level. Steve grew up in Mammoth and attended San Manuel High School. He got the idea for opening a gym while watching a bunch of people walking in Mammoth for exercise. He had also heard people complaining about having nothing to do in town. When an aunt of his who owned a gym in Douglas, Arizona decided to retire, the timing seemed right. His aunt was selling her gym equipment

so Steve bought some and has filled “The Body Shop” up with it. The name Body Shop came from Steve’s love of cars. He used to participate in car shows and was a car show fan. He was always taking his automobiles to a body shop to be worked on. He thought the same idea applies to our bodies. We have to work on our bodies to keep them in shape and performing well. Hence The Body Shop’s motto “come in and get a tone up.” Steve realizes that people especially our kids need to become more physically active. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. There are both immediate and long-term health effects for obese children. Obese youth and adolescents are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, bone and joint problems, and sleep apnea. They are also more likely than youth of normal weight to become overweight

or obese adults. Obese adults are more at risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis. Healthy lifestyle habits including healthy eating and exercise/physical activity can lower the risk of becoming obese. In the United States 17% of children 6 to 19 years of age are overweight or obese. About one third of U.S. adults are obese. The Body Shop offers a friendly air conditioned environment where you can work out with state of the art equipment. There are free weights, weight machines, cardio-vascular work out machines, a ladies punching bag, treadmills, trampolines and stationary bikes. The membership rates are priced less than you would pay in Tucson plus you do not have to sign a yearly contract or pay an initial membership fee. There are daily, weekly or monthly rates. “Come in and ask about our family and college rates,” said Steve. Kids 15 and under need to be accompanied by a parent. Steve said he would like to be able to offer adult exercise classes and activities like Zumba. He is open to suggestions from the members and willing to work with them about improving the gym or adjusting the schedule if possible. The Body Shop is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and closed on Sunday. Steve would like to invite everyone from the Tri –Community and the Hayden-Winkelman and Kearny areas to come and see what The Body Shop has to offer. If you are in to fitness you won’t be disappointed and if you are new to working out, this is the place for you. Come in and get that tone up and get your motor running. By Frank Smith The San Manuel Junior High football team traveled over to Hayden last week and handed them a 40 – 0 shut out. The defense did not give up a first down and the offense scored on their first four possessions. The scoring was spread among five miner running backs: Frank Renteria, Joseph Lopes, Luis Lopez, Isidro Wasko and

Stephen Faulstich all contributed touchdown runs. The defense was led by Kyle Yonkin and Michael Sanchez. Coach Dave Jungbluth said, “I was pleased with the team’s effort but the team will need to play better if they are to compete against Globe this coming Wednesday.” The Miners will host the Globe Tigers today at 6 p.m.

Junior High Miners shut out Hayden 40-0

By John Hernandez Concerned citizens of San Manuel held a meeting Thursday evening at the San Manuel Fire Department to discuss the future of the town of San Manuel. A steering committee is being formed with the intentions of preserving and improving San Manuel. Presently San Manuel has been losing businesses, people are moving out and the number of vacant houses has increased. At the meeting, Gene Osborn spoke to an audience of 22 people about the idea of a steering committee looking into forming a Village Town

Council. The council would be made up of 10 volunteers that would act as a leadership group and work with Pinal County and other organizations in promoting, improving and preserving San Manuel. The council would seek to improve the area to draw businesses and people to the area. Osborn and members of the audience spoke about San Manuel being a good place to live. It has a low crime rate, a grade A quality school district, churches, banks, small town businesses, a great award winning airport and the Sun Life Family Health

There will be another meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15, at the San Manuel Fire Department training room at 6:30 p.m. They will be forming committees and discuss the Village Town Council. If you are interested in making San Manuel a better place to live and want to be on a committee,

I have been home for about a week-and-a-half now, wrapped up in the comfort of my newly-decorated bedroom (thanks Mom!), and I have taken time to reflect on my six-week adventure in a little Eastern European country called Bulgaria . . . a land of rolling green hills, endless fields of dancing yellow sunflowers as far as the eye can see, and the beauty of God’s Creation around every bend and crossroad . . . Bulgaria, a land that is nestled securely in my heart and a land that has become my second home. As I sit and reflect on the work that the Lord has done, I ponder where He has led me and what He has done in me. My tongue is still a contorted, discombobulated mess and my mind is still slightly fried after weeks of speaking mainly Bulgarian and I find that I am still occasionally thinking in Bulgarian, dreaming in Bulgarian and mentally translating everything I say and hear into Bulgarian (exhausting!:) . . . but I thank God for speaking in me and through me and for giving me the ability to communicate in this difficult, obscure language. I marvel at the wonder of where He has led me and the plans that have unfolded before me in my 33 years of life and I stand amazed at the experiences that have shaped me, molded me and

made me who I am. And I know there is so much more to come and so much work left to be done, yet (despite my exasperating insecurities) I have to continually learn to trust. I pause to reflect on all of the adventures, experiences and special moments of the past six weeks . . . from watching “Doctor Electronica” fix even the most complex gadgets in Panagyurishte, to telling countless stories and singing songs with adorable children at the Montessori School in Sofia, to worshipping God and praying with pastors in the Roma (gypsy) village of Banya, to reuniting with my Bulgarian sister and Baba in the village of Boshulya, to loving orphaned children and whispering, “Jesus loves you” in their little ears. I thank God for each blessed encounter and for allowing me to be His hands and feet . . . one little footstep at a time. I am humbled to consider all of the amazing families that took me in this summer . . . accepted me as one of their own, stuffed me with delicious delicacies until I was ready to pop, invited me into their lives and conversations, made me feel right at home. God has given me the privilege of meeting so many different people and the honor of forming so many unique relationships; He has given me the freedom to embrace new cultures and traditions and the opportunity to sit at the tables of so many diverse families and partake in lives that are worlds apart. I embrace these relationships whole-heartedly and I feel so blessed to have sat at the tables of those who have so little, yet are so hospitable and selfless. I go with the desire to serve, yet I always get so much more in return. As I have sat at many a tables--surrounded by “family” and stuffed to the gills with grape leaves stuffed with rice, gyuveche casseroles,

piping hot moussaka, soft palachinki crepes filled with sweet chocolate, and fresh shopska salad with juicy tomatoes and cucumbers straight from the garden--I have watched with awestruck wonder as God’s plans have unfolded little by little. WOW . . . I stand amazed and humbled. When my six weeks in Bulgaria were drawing to a close, I became anxious about returning to my family, my “comfort zone”, my snuggly bed and even “snugglier” golden retrievers, and my job as a kindergarten teacher. My last day with an amazing team was spent touring Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. There was one last thing I had hoped to accomplish on this summer adventure, but it just hadn’t worked out for various reasons. I had hoped and prayed about re-connecting with this amazing man of

God named Dobri. When I look at Dobri, I can picture what Moses must have looked like . . . strong hands, long white beard and flowing hair, wise old eyes that take you places and tell stories when you look into them. Dobri used to be a guard for the king of Bulgaria when Bulgaria had a king and now he spends his humble days begging for money at churches to restore Bulgarian Orthodox Churches all over his beloved Bulgaria. He is an amazing man of God filled with so much wisdom and insight and I got the privilege of meeting him and translating for him during my last visit to Bulgaria in

2008. Dobri is a legend in this country, lovingly refered to as “Dyado Dobri” . . . “Grandfather” Dobri. I yearned to find Dobri somewhere along

the journey, but God saved that for my last day in the country. I was overjoyed to see him when our group

Public Notice The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP) is proposing to obtain right of way (ROW) for portions of electrical line located on Bureau of Land management (BLM) land currently operating without a ROW from the BLM in Pinal and Gila counties, Arizona. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to address the potential environmental consequences of proposed actions as well as solicit comments from local, state and federal agencies, Indian tribes, and interested members of the public during their decision-making process. A Draft EA has been prepared to address potential impacts resulting from development of the project. Project Description Existing infrastructure along 14 portions of 12.5 kilovolt (kV) distribution and 69kV transmission line requires new poles, insulators, and access road construction and maintenance in order to prevent future disruption of electrical service to SCIP customers. The portions of electrical line total approximately 13 miles in length are are located entirely within the BLM’s land jurisdiction. entered the Alexander Nevsky Church, the largest Orthodox church in Bulgaria, sitting by the door of the church clutching his money cup and prayer beads. As first, Dobri struggled to hear my excitable Bulgarian and his memory of our last encounter was foggy . . . yet, when I returned with pictures, recognition and remembrance flooded his wrinkled face and he instantly lit up and began to smile and hug me as we reminisced. I was convinced that God had

led me to Dobri as this journey drew to a close, as I listened to the mumbled speech of this amazing man of God comment on the good works of a gracious Heavenly Father . . . Yes, I am humbled and I am awestruck by this amazing journey called life. It certainly always succeeds in taking me by surprise every step of the way. As I said goodbye to a beautiful land called Bulgaria, to the relationships and the experiences, I once again promised to return. In my mind, I watched as a sea of faces, new foods, experiences and adventures, rolling green hills and fields of smiling sunflowers danced before my eyes; in my heart, I longed to return to each memory for just a moment as more of my heart was once again deposited in the fertile Bulgarian soil. My thoughts and prayers are now consumed by this journey; my desire to serve and be His hands and feet are what continues to

The Safe Journey House is open and running. It provides help and support for victims of domestic violence. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Emergency help is available after hours by calling 520-385-4970 or toll free 1-855-385-4970.
