We have been receiving some fairly nasty robo calls from a Alicia Bristow running against Pete Rios for Supervisor. Most area voters have known Pete Rios for over 3 decades as a good public servant, so we hang-up on these very negative phone calls. Some of her other phone calls make reference to the Oracle Fire District where she accuses Pete of not listening to area residents on the size of a new fi re board. The Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted to create a 3 member board, since no one from the community testifi ed at their September meeting. Later Alicia Bristow claimed that the Oracle community had wanted 5 members and had passed a resolution, that she or the fi re dept. apparently failed to turn in. The Board of Supervisors never had a copy of the resolution, but later met again and went to 5 members. Alicia’s husband is one of seven candidates running for the Oracle Fire Board. Could it be she raised such a big stink over this, just to give her husband a greater chance to get elected? Alicia Bristow does not appear to be an honest and truthful person. She is participating in area’s most dirty campaigning and is trying to force her husband’s election on the fi re board. We know Pete Rios and what we know of Alicia is not good./s/Angie HuertaMammoth, AZ

By John Hernandez Councilman Joe Brewer brought up the issue of nepotism at the council meeting on Oct. 18. Mayor Alvaro Barcelo admitted that his daughter is working for the Town of Mammoth in an office position but that he was not involved in the hiring process and did not attempt to influence her hire.

Town Clerk Patsy Large said that she hired his daughter because she was the best candidate and that the mayor did not attempt to pressure her in anyway. She also said that the mayor’s daughter had volunteered at the office and worked well. The job opening was posted and policy was followed. The Town

attorney said there was no nepotism involved unless the mayor hired her, was involved in the hiring process or attempted to use undue pressure for someone else to hire her. Joe Brewer pointed out that the people who had complained about the nepotism did not show up for the meeting. Brewer requested that

No nepotism in Mammoth, attorney deemsthe Council stop requiring people of Mammoth to have to purchase burial vaults at the cemetery. He said it was added funeral cost that could be a hardship for some people. Other council members pointed out that Mammoth had some of the cheapest burial rates in the state and that vaults were used to keep the ground from collapsing and breaking the coffin.

Brewer also asked if people living across the river could be buried in the Mammoth cemetery. He said many people living there had ties to Mammoth. The Town Clerk said that the people of Mammoth pay taxes, which pay for services including maintaining the cemetery and they have to be considered first. No action was taken by the council as the motion was not

seconded by any other council member. The council approved the purchase of ten analog radios for use by public works. Radios cost $3,875.00 from Canyon State. The lease or purchase of a backhoe was discussed. A new back hoe could cost as much as $80,000. Options and purchase costs are being looked into by David Garcia.

Experience matters. That statement is most exemplified during the election of County School Superintendent. Orlenda Roberts has a multitude of educational experiences. She has also demonstrated a high degree of integrity, honesty and unquestionable moral character. She has served Pinal County and its 15 school districts and 122 schools with admirable accomplishments. I would encourage citizens to contact their local school or district to get information regarding the relationship between the

Letter to the Editor: Experience matterscounty office and their schools. Orlenda Roberts has been the Pinal County School Superintendent for five years and during this time her accomplishments and educational programs with school districts have resulted in Pinal County School Office being a model with a reputation as the most efficient and high achieving county school office in the state. Looking at comparison of the experience of Orlenda Roberts and her opponent it is obvious that it is a mismatch. Mrs. Roberts has been in education her entire professional career, in Pinal County. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Education, a Masters Degree in education (plus 45 college units above the Masters). Her opponent has taught only 3 years at one grade level and has no experience with supervision of personnel or school budgeting. She clearly has no understanding of the responsibilities and authority at the office. She states in her publicity that she will work with districts “to make school budgets sound”. The County School Superintendent has no role in deciding budgets for school districts. She also states that she will “create sound volunteer networks in our schools”. The state already mandates

that each school have a volunteer site-council and most schools develop a parental volunteer program. The County Superintendent has no role or responsibility or authority to tell schools what to do in this area. The Arizona Constitution allows anyone with a teaching certificate to run for the office of County School Superintendent. This includes, I suppose, even those with temporary provisional certificates. Arizona Department of Education informs me that Jill Brousserd holds a temporary provisional certificate which will expire in May 2013. Over the years I have witnessed three persons who had only the minimum teaching certificates to be removed from office by the courts. Let us not repeat the mistakes of those three counties by electing a person with no experience or understanding of our county public schools and who has no supervision of budgetary experience. This letter is written based upon my 14-plus years as the former County School Superintendent and working with Orlenda Roberts for several of those years. It is an unsolicited letter and not written at her request or by her knowledge./s/ Jack Harmon, Ed. D. Oracle, Arizona

Letter to the Editor: Rios unethical This is in response to the letters you see in the newspaper, every once in a while, claiming that Pete Rios, our current supervisor, is ethical. On Tuesday, Oct. 9, at a Special Supervisor Board Meeting to reconsider our earlier vote by the supervisors regarding the Oracle Fire District Board, it was clearly evident that ethical is not a word that should be used to describe our District One Supervisor. The Special Board Meeting was held at the request of the County Attorney’s office, based on several calls made to their

office at to the Elections Office. In a “cloak and dagger” plot the Oracle Fire District almost succumbed to the underhanded tactics used by Pete and his cronies to change the Elections of Oracle’s Fire Board from a five person board as officially submitted to the Elections Office to a three person board. The deception was evident and is reflected in the minutes of this special board meeting called to reconsider the Sept. 5 decision of the BOS. Rios tried every tactic to stop the decision of the board,

motioning to table, and even questioning the cost to change the early ballot. Supervisors indicated at the Oct. 9 meeting that they had not seen the official paperwork turned into the Elections Office requesting a five member board. That the paperwork was never turned in to the Elections Office is hogwash. In late Aug., the official paperwork requesting a five person board as advertised was seen by one candidate and a witness who visited the Elections Office to verify candidate names. The paperwork showed the official request of the Oracle Fire District made on May 7 for a five person board and it was signed by the Fire Chief and next in command. Where do you suppose the

paperwork went between late Aug. and September 5? This does not make Supervisor Rios, the Elections Office or the Fire District Administrator look good. Testimony to all of this was provided at the special board meetings in Florence. Too many questions are left unanswered as to who knew what, who had what. These questions raise the uncertainty of ethical practices. The other two board members, Smithson and Snider, said they were not aware of the request for a five member board or the public advertisements for a five member board. Smithson continued to say that he did not feel comfortable with their original decision in light of the new information presented by fire board

candidates and Oracle community members. This is an A-typical example of underhanded politics! To top it off, the Oracle Fire Department staff and candidates were not notified of the

September 5 decision. The change was discovered quite by accident. Is this the way county government is supposed to work?/s/Joan M. MaciasOracle, AZ

The Mountain Vista Cougars Football team finished third in the Central Junior High League. They defeated the Hayden Lobos 20 – 6 on Tuesday Oct. 23 at Mt. Vista. The team finished with an overall record of four

wins and four losses, a significant improvement from last year. Congratulations to the players and coaches for a fine season. With the defeat, Hayden finished a respectable fourth place in the final league standings.

The Mountain Vista Lady Cougars eighth grade volleyball team went undefeated during the regular season this year. They had many hard fought games throughout the year. It was no different in the Central Junior High League Tournament held at the Kearny Junior High gym last Saturday. The first place seed Lady Cougars battled the fourth seed Eloy Blue Devils to

the final game losing a heartbreaker 25 – 23. The sixth and seventh grade Lady Cougars made it to the tournament this year but lost in the first round to Ray. This team had 30 energetic girls constantly working hard for playing time. The Central Junior High League tournament was won by The San Carlos Lady Braves. The Eloy Lady Blue Devils finished second.

Miner swimmers traveled to the Small School Championship Swim Meet held at Phoenix Country Day School in Paradise Valley on Saturday, October 27. Since the Arizona Interscholastic Association reorganized Swimming into two divisions in 2010, this meet has been known as the unofficial State Championship meet for the small schools (schools of size 1A, 2A or 3A). Miner Swimmers did well finishing with several top eight finishes at the meet. Amara Apuron was the first Miner to finish in the top eight during the day with a seventh place finish in the girls 200 Freestyle (2:17.68). A couple of events later Wayne Newman was able to finish in sixth place in the boys 50 Freestyle (24.26), followed by Cierra Austin finishing seventh in the girls 50 freestyle (27.99). John Bribiescas had a

Wayne Newman successfully defends breaststroke titlepersonal best swim of 6:24.09 in the 500 Freestyle on his way to an eighth place finish. During the second half of the meet, the Miners really started to shine. The girls 200 Freestyle relay team of Cierra Austin, Amara Apuron, Theresa Sweeney and Nicole Primero finish fourth with a new school record time of 1:56.22. Andy Monfred finished sixth in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:09.58 improving his personal best swim by an amazing four seconds. Apuron was able to finish eighth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:3.57. In 2011, Wayne Newman won the 100 Breaststroke in a very close race. This year, he entered as the number one seed against the same competitor from Sedona Red Rock High School as well as a tough competitor from Valley Christian High School who had a seedtime between the two of them. As is usually the case in close breaststroke races, the lead changes on every stroke depending who is gliding and who is stroking. Newman seemed to have a slight edge going into the second turn and came out

with a significant lead. A great final turn and finishing length was enough for Newman to win the race in School Record time of 1:05.47. Shortly after the race, Newman was award the Championship Medal for the 100 Breaststroke. Cierra Austin finished sixth in the girls 100 Breaststroke with a new school record time of 1:20.34. Most importantly, for Austin was that her time met the division II state qualification provisional time standard, a time she had been very close to all season and was finally able to achieve at the final meet of the season. The girls relay team of Apuron, Sweeney, Primero, and Austin went on to finish sixth in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a School Record time of 4:19.26. The girls finished the meet in ninth place overall and the boys finished twelfth. The swimmers worked all season to be at their best for this meet and the coaches were pleased with the results. Head Coach Alex Gort was proud of the way Senior Andy Monfred made the most of his final High School Swim meet. “Andy began swimming

competitively this season for the first time,” Gort said. “Each week he practiced hard, working on his conditioning and technique, and it was fitting to see that he was rewarded with a great meet, dropping large chunks of time in every race he swam, including the sixth place finish in the backstroke.” Senior Wayne Newman has earned an automatic qualifying time for the Division 2 State Championship Meet in the 100 Breaststroke. Newman (50 Free, 200

IM, 100 Back), Apuron (500 Freestyle) and Austin (100 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke) have earned provisional qualifying times and compete in those events at the meet. All three of the Miners girls’ relays (200 Medley, 200 Freestyle and 400 Freestyle) have met the provisional time and hope to compete. The final list of meet qualifiers will be posted later this week. Miner swimmers who qualified will compete at the Division II State Championship Meet at

Skyline High School on Friday and Saturday (Nov 2-3).

By Frank Smith The Gophers from Florence rolled into to town on Friday night to take on San Manuel in a must win game for the Miners. If the Miners wanted to stay in contention for a playoff spot in the Division V State Tournament they would need to pull off the win over a bigger opponent, instead the Gophers took the win 53 – 29 and knocked the Miners out of playoff contention. The Gophers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on a five play - 77yard opening drive in for a score capped off with a 10 yard pass into the end zone that was tipped and caught for the touchdown by wide receiver Ramsey Garcia, the extra point kick by Jacob Lamas was good for a 7 – 0 lead with 9:23 on the clock in the first quarter. The Miners answered right back on their opening drive, scoring on the second play of the drive. San Manuel lined up at their own 48 yard line

after the Gophers attempted an onside kick, running back John Ruiz got the first call as he picked up four yards on the carry. The Miners were now lined up at the Florence 48 yard line on second down and six to go for the first down, quarterback Adrian Torres dropped back for the pass hitting wide receiver Andre Sierra with a five yard pass to the right side of the field, Sierra then tosses the ball to Ruiz on the ‘Hook and Ladder’ play for the 48 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick by Adrian Diaz was wide left for a 6 – 7 score with 8:38 on the clock. Later on in the second quarter, the Miners began their drive from their own 25 yard line driving down to the Gophers 43 yard line, wide receiver Sierra took the ball on a reverse taking the ball down to the Gophers one yard line where he fumbled the ball as he reached for the end zone.

Florence would take over at their own one yard line driving 99 yards in 12 plays capped off with a Jordan Neal 25 yard run into the end zone, the extra point kick by Jacob Lamas was no good for a 13 – 6 lead with 3;56 left in the second quarter. After a punt, an interception, and a fumble on the next ensuing drives, the Gophers had possession at the Miners 31 yard line. Florence went on to score six plays later on a four yard run by Nick Brown into the end zone, the two point conversion by Jared Williams was good to add to the lead at 21 – 6 with :26 left in the first half of play. The Gophers took the 21 – 6 lead into halftime as the Miners could not sustain a drive before the half. In the third quarter, the Miners came out fired up – taking their second half opening drive in for a score. San Manuel lined up at the Gophers 43 yard line after

Gophers burrow past Miners 53 – 29another onside kick and a short return by the Miners, San Manuel drove down to the Gophers three yard line in six plays-capped off by a three yard blast into the end zone by running back Shane Kelly, the two point conversion by Ruiz was good for a 14 – 21 score with 9:11 on the clock. On the ensuing kickoff, Florence return man Keyshaun Boyd returned the ball 95 yards to the house for the touchdown, the extra point kick was no good as the Gophers pulled ahead 27 – 14 with 8:57 on the clock. The Gophers lined up to kick off to the Miners, dropping an onside kick and recovering the ball at the Miners 48 yard line. Florence scored seven plays later on a one yard touchdown run up the middle

by Nick Brown, the two point pass was incomplete for the score of 33 – 14 with 5:40 in the third quarter. On the next possession for the Miners from their own 37 yard, the Miners went with a deep pass on the first play of the drive that was intercepted

to give the ball back to the Gophers at their own 25 yard line. Florence cashed in on the miscue six plays later when Jordan Neal broke loose for a 42 yard touchdown run, the extra point kick by Lamas

On Sat. the San Pedro Valley Lions Club in Mammoth sponsored a haunted house. The kids had a chance to carve their own pumpkin, decorate candy apples and play “cake bingo.” They also could walk through the haunted house and graveyard if they were brave enough. Admission for the haunted house was $1 or a can of food with proceeds going to the Tri-Community Food Bank. There was a costume contest for kids from in grades K-4 and 5 -8 grades.

was good to extend the lead to 40 – 14 at the 2:10 mark of the third quarter. The Gophers intercepted another pass on the next Miners drive – setting up Florence at their own 37 yard line, on the second play of the drive the Miners defense came up big – knocking the ball looses at the 44 yard line with defensive end Jonathan Croci picking up the ball and returning it the Gophers three yard line. The Miners lined up at the three yard line, quarterback Torres handed the ball off to Ruiz who ran to the left side of the fi eld, fumbled the ball at the two yard line where a heads up Torres picked up the ball and continued to run it into the end zone for the touchdown. The two point conversion run was no good to chip away at the Gophers lead at 20 – 40 as time expired in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Gophers special teams did it again – they returned another kick off for a touchdown this time it was Jaylean Dean from 80 yards out for the score, the extra point kick was blocked for a 46 – 20 lead with 11;46 in the fourth quarter.

The Miners recovered another onside kick giving the possession at their own 45 yard line, San Manuel went three and out – faking the punt on fourth down, coming up short of the fi rst down to give the ball back to the Gophers at their own 49 yard line. Florence lined up at their own 49 yard line, scoring three plays later on another Jordan Neal touchdown from 33 yards out down the right side of the fi eld, the extra point kick by Lamas was good for a 53 – 20 score with 8:45 left in the fourth quarter. The Miners took the ensuing kick and were penalized for a holding call – moving the ball back to their own 15 yard line. San Manuel moved the ball down to the Gophers 15 yard line in 10 plays to attempt a 32 yard fi eld goal on fourth down and two yards to go. The Miners lined up for the kick with kicker Adrian Diaz splitting the up rights for the three point score, with the Gophers still ahead 23 – 53 with 4;50 showing on the clock. San Manuel kicked off to the Gophers where they began the drive from their own 37 yard line, the Miners defense held Florence to a three and out, forcing the punt. The Miners started out at their own 41 yard line, driving

down to the Gophers 14 yard line in fi ve plays with Ruiz capping off the drive with a 14 yard touchdown run, the two point conversion pass went incomplete for a 29 – 53 fi nal score. Head Coach Steve Elmore said, “We played hard the whole game and never backed down against a bigger and faster opponent. I think we were in it the entire game until the fourth quarter when the turnovers killed us. You cannot win a game with eight turnovers and two kick returns for touchdowns. In the end, I am proud of all the guys this year. We came together as a team and never quit during any game this year. All I can ask of them as a coach is to try their hardest and to never give up and this group of guys did that game in and game out. I am very proud of the 2012 San Manuel Football Team. The Miners missed the playoffs this year, fi nishing 20 in the fi nal power point rankings as only the top 16 team advance to the state playoffs. San Manuel will have several players to rebuild with and will look to get back into the playoffs next year. Go online to www.copperarea.com to see photos from the fi nal game for the Miners and to see the individual stats.
