The extensive work we have conducted in the region has provided us with regional geological insights that encouraged the acquisition of additional interests on the same trend as our existing land package which now provides Redhawk with the largest land position in the district. Major companies have directly or indirectly become involved in the region and this significant increase in contiguous land areas with excellent exploration potential will ensure Redhawk will maintain control of the dominant land position in the Copper Creek mining district. We will evaluate the mineral potential in this favorable trend utilizing the same approach to exploration that has proven successful for us at Copper Creek.” Redhawk is a Canadian- based resource exploration and development company with primary focus on the accelerated development of its advanced stage Copper Creek copper-molybdenum project in San Manuel. The 100 percent owned Copper Creek property consists of approximately twenty-eight square miles of contiguous patented and unpatented mining claims, state prospecting permits and ASLD Mineral Exploration Permits located about 70 miles northeast of Tucson and about 15 miles east of San Manuel. The property is in the prolific southwest US porphyry copper belt at the projected intersection of a major northwest belt of porphyry copper deposits or mines (Ray, Miami/Globe, Superior/Resolution, Johnson Camp) and a major east- northeast belt of porphyry deposits (San Manuel/ Kalamazoo, Silver Bell, Lakeshore, Safford, Morenci). The property is within sight of the former BHP Kalamazoo/ San Manuel copper smelter and mine and within 30 miles of an existing operating copper mill and smelter. Editor, San Manuel Miner: Lions Clubs have been serving your area since 1947, when the San Pedro Lions Club was chartered, and 1963, when the San Manuel-Oracle Lions Club was chartered. Both clubs have been exemplary resources for the residents of your area and will continue to do so. In addition to the Lions Clubs, you have been fortunate to have the Gila River Leo Club, the Lions youth organization. It is important to note that these two Lions Clubs are the only Lions Clubs in your area endorsed by the International Association of Lions Clubs. The former San Manuel Galiuro Mountains Lions Club is no longer recognized by the Lions organization, as

Letter to the Editor: Oracle Community Center open to entire Tri-CommunityEditor, San Manuel Miner and Oracle Towne Crier: As many of your readers have noticed, the sign in front of the Oracle Community Center (OCC) has changed. It now reflects our true goal and mission statement. The center is here to serve the entire community, including San Manuel, Mammoth and beyond. The OCC is also here to serve all the residents and not a just a small segment. The new Board assumed duties in April of this year and we are slowly getting things oriented to be inclusive. Some of the things we are looking at, and have already implemented, are Family Potlucks, Family Movie Nights and Teen Dances. We have many activities in place and will be expanding those based on demand. The OCC is not sponsored by any organization public or

private and therefore is totally dependent upon the community for our survival and operation. Our income is generated from memberships, hall rentals and donations both time and monetary. Without our volunteer corps, we would be hard-pressed to stay open. From these sources of income, we pay the necessities such as water, gas, phone, electricity, trash disposal, maintenance and upkeep. Please do not misinterpret this letter. It is not a plea for funds or membership. All I am asking is that folks from the Tri-Community come by for a visit and check us out. Once again we are here to serve all the residents of the Tri-Community. Thank you for your time, and thanks to the Tri-Community for your past support. Hope to see all of you soon./s/ Carl RiggsPresident OCC

Letter to the Editor: Please support local Lions groupsthe charter for that club was cancelled earlier this year and will not be reactivated. Please continue to support the San Manuel-Oracle and San Pedro Lions Clubs and the Gila River Leo Club in their charitable efforts, such as

providing eyeglasses for needy children and the dozens of other services they provide to the community. Your support is vital to their mission to be “Knights of the Blind”. Thank you for your past and future support of Lions and

By John Hernandez Sierra Oaks School has a new fi rst and second grade teacher, Debra Dapkus. She is also new to Oracle as she just moved here with her husband Jesse and their two boys. She is from Seattle, Washington where she received her degree in Liberal

Arts and was involved in a Graduate Teaching Program in Elementary Education. She has been in Arizona for 10 years, living in Tucson. She was the Program Coordinator for a tutoring program at Tucson Unifi ed School District. Debra lives off of Mount Lemmon Road and she said she “loves it here.” Her family likes

to go hiking and camping and this area is a good place for it. “We are glad we have joined the community and we will be involved in community events,” she said. “I am excited to be here.” Debra likes gardening and listening to the radio. She plans to utilize the Sierra Oaks Garden to teach her fi rst and

second graders. The class will be helping with weeding and planting. She said you can also use the garden to teach other subjects such as spelling. Her two kids are attending school at Sierra Oaks. “Sierra Oaks School is great,” she said. “I love the class sizes and the kids are so friendly and kind.”

Editor, San Manuel Miner: People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Ed Barker of the Apache Junction News wrote an article this Monday, Aug. 8, about Paul Babeu’s photo radar escapade and one of his top offi cer’s multiple criminal speeding incidents. How did the Sheriff handle it? Part of Barker’s article goes as follows: “You may remember this is the same Paul Babeu whose personal car was ticketed for

Letter to the Editor: Babeu needs to look at his own house fi rst

speeding by PCSO photo radar back in 2008 when he was a Chandler police offi cer and before he became the sheriff. He told PCSO at the time that he didn’t know who was speeding in his car even though the driver in the photograph was a dead-ringer for his sister-in-law (the one married to Judge Shaun Babeu). “Sheriff Babeu never paid the ticket, and neither he nor his brother ever identifi ed the mystery woman who was driving Babeu’s speeding car. But, one of the fi rst things newly elected Sheriff Babeu did when taking offi ce was to end photo radar in Pinal County (even though he now says there have been “many serious and fatal collisions”). “Then, in March of this year, Lt. Tami Villar of the PCSO was reportedly clocked by an Arizona State trooper at more than 100 miles per hour as she was passing cars on a two-lane road on her way home. Villar was driving an unmarked county vehicle and had her child in the car at the time. She identifi ed herself as a PCSO employee and after conferring with his supervisor by radio, the DPS offi cer issued Villar a “warning” for speeding but did not record the rate of speed in the box provided on the warning. Perhaps he left it blank because a warning ticket for 100 miles per hour might look a little

odd. Sheriff Babeu handled the matter internally and nothing further came of it. “Babeu’s sister-in-law and certain of his employees may be able to get away with speeding, but you and I will be cited.” County personnel informs me that there was a dash camera in the DPS car recording the speeds of over 100 MPH. The recordings from the dash cam are available for public inspection. I was informed that these incidents of criminal speeding occurred at least three times and offi cer Villar was not in pursuit of anyone. Sheriff Babue did nothing until the third criminal speeding incident and then only placed a warning letter in the offi cer’s fi le. Multiple criminal speeding incidents over 100 MPH; misuse of county vehicles; and child endangerment. All very serious violations of our state laws. Now, who really needs to explain his actions and his total disregard for public safety, and apologize to police, law enforcement and the general public? As the lead law enforcement offi cer in Pinal County, what kind of an example is Sheriff Babeu setting by attempting to cover-up these incidents? Yes, I agree with you Sheriff Babeu, “Nobody should be above the law.”/s/ Pete Rios, ChairPinal County Board of Supervisors

Editor, San Manuel Miner: Pinal County Supervisor Chairman Pete Rios was stopped for speeding by a Hayden Police Officer on August 2. His conduct with the officer and Chief of Police was not what anybody would expect from a citizen, never mind an elected official. Mr. Rios wrote an opinion column, in several newspapers, where he omitted key facts surrounding the event and portrayed himself as an innocent victim of police brutality and suggested the public should distrust the police by saying this abuse of police authority could happen to them. The uniformed officer was driving a fully marked patrol vehicle and activated his emergency lights after clocking Rios’s and vehicle for speeding. Mr. Rios yielded in a parking lot and instead of waiting in the vehicle, for an

officer to approach, Rios exited his car and walked away from the officer’s repeated verbal commands to stop, remove his hands from his pockets and return to his vehicle. Officers are trained to watch everyone’s hands, so you can imagine what this 12-year veteran officer was thinking when an unknown, defiant person refused three demands to show his hands and repeated commands to produce his driver’s license. Rios demanded to know why he was being stopped, before he would agree to any of the officer’s lawful orders. Rios loves to remind everyone of his 25 years as an Arizona lawmaker, so you would think he would know that State Law ARS 28-1595.b requires drivers to turn over identification on request, after being pulled over by an officer.

Letter to the Editor: Supervisor Pete Rios should apologize to law enforcement

At this point, the officer physically restrained Rios and began walking him back to his car, when Rios threw his license onto the hood of the patrol car. The officer called for backup and Police Chief Monte Antcliff responded, where Mr. Rios demanded the Chief control his officer, called the officer an expletive and exclaimed, “I’m a former Senator and Chairman of the Pinal Board of Supervisors.” and asked the chief, “Are these the types of thugs you hire as cops, in Hayden?” Our police officers have a tough enough job and don’t deserve the disrespect and temper tantrum of elected officials, who believe they’re above the law. Pete Rios owes the officer and Chief an apology for his unlawful conduct, the distortion of facts and his deliberate attempts to create public distrust of our protectors in law enforcement. /s/ Paul BabeuSheriff, Pinal County

Dear Friends and Family, It amazes me how, even when we are weak--when we have doubt and fail to trust--God always reminds us that he is in control of everything. This week, I knew in my heart that I had to go find what remains of my Peace Corps Host Family. You see, the lack of work and the effects of poverty can be a constant struggle in Bulgaria and the family that I lived with during the training part of my Peace Corps Service, the Kostovi family, has gradually drifted to Italy, one-by-one, to find work. All that remains is my Baba (Bulgarian Grandmother) and my little Bulgaria Sister Iva, who is still in school here in Bulgaria. I lived with the Kostovis in the town of Panagyurishte, and you can probably recall my search for them when I first arrived in Bulgaria . . . only to find a locked house and no trace of the family. So, my plan? I had decided to forge a path to the little village of Boshulya, where I knew my Baba was living, in hopes of finding the remains of the Kostovi family. As I set out from my hotel the morning of The Great Search, I felt like I was going to throw up. I had an idea of how to get to Boshulya thanks to my friend Diana, but I had never embarked on this journey by myself and I was overcome with pulsating nerves about how exactly it would all play out. I had prayed about this new phase of my Bulgarian adventure, but I was still completely forgetting to, “Trust in the Lord with all of my heart and lean not on my own understanding and in all my ways acknowledge HIM and that He would direct my path.” My trust was weak, but my God is strong. That morning, I had decided to take a taxi to the station I needed to get to because of all of my bags and I ended up in the taxi of a really nice guy. When he realized that I spoke Bulgarian, he was

excited and pleased and he immediately struck up a conversation with me. He asked where I was headed and I gave him the details . . . and then he offered to drive me all the way to Boshulya for a price that was definitely worth it--it was definitely worth it to not have the uncertainty of multiple trains and buses and then having to lug my stuff all around a village trying to find a Baba that I didn’t quite know the exact location of. To me, that was totally an answered prayer (that “Angel in Disguise”) in the face of doubt and uncertainty. “Trust in the Lord with all of your Heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-6 When we arrived in Boshulya, the taxi driver knew exactly where to take me to inquire about the whereabouts of my Baba and we arrived at her little home in no time. When I burst through the gate into her little yard, she was busy tending to her amazing little garden. “Baba!” I called out. “My Baba!” A mixture of shock, surprise, and happiness washed over her face and she hurried towards me and wrapped me up in tons of hugs and kisses that only a Baba is capable of. Her Bulgarian was Rapid-Fire as she talked to me about the rest of the Kostovis, asked me about my life and my family, and rattled on in a bundle of joy and excitement in this quiet little yard in this quiet little village. We talked, shared news, reminisced . . . as the rooster crowed, the dogs barked, and flies flitted noisily around our heads. I learned that my little sister Iva is actually living in the town of Pazardjik, where she now studies, and that everyone actually already knew that I was in Bulgaria and looking for them because word had reached my host mother in Italy! Baba became somber

and tears came to her eyes as she discussed the family’s departure to Italy and her worries as to, in a country in which people care for their elderly, who would care for her as she gets older. I could see the stress, loneliness, and worry in my Baba’s eyes in this visit and all I could do was hope to be some form of comfort to her during my few days there. These days, Baba’s best friends are her poorly-dubbed Turkish soap operas. We spent a lot of time watching these together during my time in Boshulya, watching as so-and-so cheated on her turban-clad stud and as so-and-so told off her flashy jewelry-wearing friend. Baba laughed uproariously, she agreed and disagreed with the characters, she yelled at the T.V. and gasped and commented as if our new Turkish friends were right there with us. “Don’t do that! What did you tell him? Why are you going there? Don’t be so crazy!” she commented and admonished in Bulgarian. Laughs, gasps, and exclamations constantly escaped her lips as she entered the lives of a bunch of ramshackle Turkish soap opera characters. During my time in Boshulya, I also had the “pleasure” of apparently sharing my room with a mouse. And it wasn’t Mickey! The first night, I was awakened by a little scratching noise . . . armed with my book light and my shoe, I set off to investigate. I could have sworn I saw a little tail disappear into my bag . . . but further investigation proved useless and the creature was nowhere to be found. I was up most of the night with wide eyes and trembling teeth, listening to the scratching of some unknown creature and listening to the sounds of a village: the crows of roosters unaware of the time, cows mooing and munching in the distance, flies buzzing madly as if they own the

world, cats yowling and fighting, strange “night birds” calling out to one another, dogs barking as if the wake up the entire village. Another clue as to the presence of my “roommate” was a trail of mouse droppings all over my bed a couple nights later . . . apparently the sneaky little thing had decided to take a nap in my bed while I was gone! Needless to say, I didn’t get very much sleep during my time in the village of Boshulya! The last few days, I was also able to go to Pazardjik to visit my host sister Iva. Iva was seven years old when I first arrived in Bulgaria and she was nine when I left. I was then able to come to Bulgaria and visit her when she was 12 and 13. She is now 17 years old and so much has happened in her life and her family in the last five years! When Iva was little and I lived with her family for 10-weeks and then when I visited them once I was on my own, we had so many fun adventures together. When I first met her, coincidentally in the village of Boshulya where she was visiting Baba at the time, she immediately took my hand and led me all around the yard and garden, pointing things out and giving me their names in Bulgarian. We had an instant bond from that moment on. After that, we spent many warm summer nights running around the cobblestone streets and playing “feather ball” with the other neighborhood kids, many afternoons watching

the neighborhood go by and spitting fresh sunflower seeds off of the balcony of the house, and many cold winter days playing endless games of “UNO” and “Go Fish”, which I taught my host sister and brother how to play. We truly developed a connection and we became “sisters”, sharing secrets and ideas and occasionally pestering one another. I remember one day of training, when I was feeling ill and was in bed with a rumbling tummy, Iva became my nurse bringing me bread and cheese, making me drink gallons of juice, and slipping a million little notes of encouragement under the bedroom door. She was always a “little mother” to me, which meant that she could be quite a bossy little thing! So, when Iva saw me this week, 10-years after we first met, she was visibly excited and she kept hugging the life out of me. We had a great reunion, my little Bulgarian sister and I . . . playing Uno once again, chatting like old times as if we’d never been apart, visiting an amazing park that they now having in Pazarjik, and meeting Iva’s boyfriend . . . YES, she now has a boyfriend. Iva is still so much the “same old Iva” and it was like we’ve never been apart, yet so much has happened in her life lately and she is going through so much of what typical teenagers go through, but without any proper guidance, nurturing, or mentoring. She has made some “not-so-good” choices

in her life, I’m afraid. I am so glad that I found my Baba and Iva and that we were able to be reunited once again, but I also left there so worried about the welfare of both of them . . . please pray for my dear Bulgarian Baba and my little Bulgarian sister. So, now I have once again returned to Sofia and I am at the apartment of my friend Tanya for a few nights. My team from America will arrive on Sunday and the rest of this journey will be spent rocking and comforting babies, playing with kids, having special pizza parties and handing out gifts and supplies, playing games and doing crafts, creating an educational/developmental center, and following my heart’s desire and our “Greatest Commission” at various orphanages all over Bulgaria. Please pray for the safe arrival of my team and for God’s guidance and direction as we work with Bulgaria’s orphans. It’s hard to believe that I have only 11 more days of this amazing journey!Love,Chantel Editor’s Note: Chantel has started a daily blog to document her time in Bulgaria. If you wish to read about her adventures, head over to this website: http://chantelsloan.wordpress.com. Chantel teaches kindergarten at Oracle Ridge Elementary School in Oracle. She is already back at Oracle, hard at work, but we still have a few more of her stories to share with our readers.

Two of the popular art work-shops taught earlier this year by Barbara Kemp Cowlin and Val Bembenek -- Papermaking and a two-day Drawing Inten-sive -- will be repeated this fall as Hand in Hand Art Work-shops continue. The two artists bring together the painterly arts, graphic arts, and classic paper crafts in ca-sual half-day sessions at the spacious Cowlin home studio in Oracle. Their September-October workshops are open to all who love to create, from ex-perienced to novice. A detailed schedule, workshop descrip-tions, fees, and registration in-

formations can be downloaded at www.barbarakempcowlin.com/workshops. “Drawing Intensive” will open the fall season on Sept. 13-14. Other two-day ses-sions are: “Artful Design and Composition” (Sept. 27-28); “Charming Handmade Books” (Oct. 4-5); and “Color Theory Intensive” (Oct. 11-12). Papermaking on Sept. 20 will feature blue and black denim pulps, while Papermaking on Sept. 21 will offer vegetable fiber pulps. Other one-day workshops are ”Stenciling & Stamping” (Oct. 18); and “Making Stab Bound Books”

(Oct. 19). “We’ve designed the individ-ual sessions as a creative, fun experience for small groups of people wanting to learn dif-ferent arts or to expand on the abilities and skills they already enjoy.” said Barbara, who has taught art at all levels, grade school to college. More at her website, www.barbarakemp-cowlin.com. “The sessions offer partici-pants an oppourunity to refresh their creativity as they learn basics and finish projects,” said Val, a paper and book artist for ten years.
