Sanctity of Life For Christians of both the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches marriage is a sacrament. Through the prayers and actions of our wedding rites we profess the presence of Christ in the Spirit and believe that it is the Lord who unites a man and a woman in a life of mutual love. In this sacred union, husband and wife are called by Christ not only to live and work together, but also to share their Christian life so that each with the aid of the other may progress through the Holy Spirit in the life of holiness and so achieve Christian perfec-tion. This relationship between husband and wife is estab-lished and sanctified by the Lord. As a sacred vocation, mar-riage mirrors the union of Christ and the church (Eph. 5:23). Christ affirmed and blessed the oneness and profound sig-nificance of marriage. Christian tradition, following his teaching, has always proclaimed the sanctity of marriage. It has defined marriage as the fundamental relationship in which a man and woman, by total sharing with each other, seek their own growth in holiness and that of their children, and thus show forth the presence on earth of God's kingdom.

Carefree Days of Summer? Summertime and the living is easy but not free from our respon-sibility as followers of Christ to help those in need. The hot, leisurely days of summer provide an excellent opportunity to get caught up on some of those tasks which we postponed during the demanding days of winter. Would you be willing to go through your closets to get rid of all those unwanted heavy winter clothes and shoes which served you so well during this blistering winter season? Please donate any unwanted clothing to the Catholic Charities bin located on the parking lot.

W hoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life (John 12:25)

I have always pondered this passage from the Gospel according to St. John. Why hate my life? I don't have it so bad. I grew up in a comfortable though modest home. Mom and Dad are loving parents. I got along with my brothers but not all of the time. And I have been blessed with a great education at Seton Hall. My assignments have been wonderful and most of all I am a priest. Now I am not perfect by far; I have my faults, my quirks, my weaknesses, but I also have my faith, Christ's forgiveness, and the love of family, friends, and parishioners. I want for nothing. So why should I hate my life? Precisely because I love all these things which can be taken in a moment. When we "love this life", Christ is implying that we love it more than Him, that we love it more than our neighbor. Our love must me aimed toward love of neighbor and of God rather than the passing things. When we love the things of this world even our earthly existence, then we will tend to put more value on them than on what it most valuable, that is our salvation and the salvation of others. As I grow older, I come to realize that I do hate my life in this world which helps me on my way to eternal life. You see, not until we give up on life in this world can we enjoy eternal life. When we deny ourselves all sorts of things, we are gaining an appreciation and love for the things of heaven. I can say that each day I grow in my contempt of the worldly and in my love for the ethereal. There are so many things of this world to hate: war, ISIS, disease & death, gay "marriage", selfishness, preju-dice, gossip, politics, child abuse and pornography, mistrust, divorce, abortion; need I say more. The things of this "world" are opposed to God and personal holiness. Yet what God has created is good, and I have come to understand that when Jesus or St. Paul talk about the "world" they mean that which is op-posed to God and sanctity. If our life is attached or focused on the world then we die, but if we die to this world, then we begin to live and to live in Christ for eternity.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double aston-ishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not be-cause of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’ twofold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence?

Supreme Court Decision on Marriage “A Tragic Error” Says President of Catholic Bishops’ Conference

June 26, 2015 WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court decision, June 26, interpreting the U.S. Constitution to require all states to license and recognize same-sex “marriage” “is a tragic error that harms the common good and most vulnerable among us,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The full statement follows: Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable. Just as Roe v. Wade did not settle the question of abortion over forty years ago, Obergefell v. Hodges does not settle the question of marriage today. Neither decision is rooted in the truth, and as a result, both will eventually fail. Today the Court is wrong again. It is profoundly immoral and unjust for the government to declare that two people of the same sex can constitute a marriage. The unique meaning of marriage as the union of one man and one woman is inscribed in our bodies as male and female. The protection of this meaning is a critical dimension of the “integral ecology” that Pope Francis has called us to promote. Mandating marriage redefinition across the country is a tragic error that harms the common good and most vulnerable among us, especially children. The law has a duty to support every child’s basic right to be raised, where possible, by his or her married mother and father in a stable home. Jesus Christ, with great love, taught unambiguously that from the beginning marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman. As Catholic bishops, we follow our Lord and will continue to teach and to act according to this truth. I encourage Catholics to move forward with faith, hope, and love: faith in the unchanging truth about marriage, rooted in the immutable nature of the human person and confirmed by divine revelation; hope that these truths will once again prevail in our society, not only by their logic, but by their great beauty and manifest service to the common good; and love for all our neighbors, even those who hate us or would punish us for our faith and moral convictions. Lastly, I call upon all people of good will to join us in proclaiming the goodness, truth, and beauty of marriage as rightly understood for millennia, and I ask all in positions of power and authority to respect the God-given freedom to seek, live by, and bear witness to the truth.

August 15-22                     Let’s pray that the Blessed Mary of the Assumption will intercede for us all, to untie the knots of sin and

The 51st International Eucharistic Congress

Cebu, Philippines January 24 - 31, 2016.

The Congress is an international gathering of people aimed at promoting an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church. The Roman Ritual De Sacra Communione et de Cultu Mysterii Eucharistici extra Missam defines the Congress as “a pause for commitment and prayer

to which a particular Church invites the universal Church”. During this time “the celebration of the Eu-charist becomes the center and vortex of all forms of piety, of theological and pastoral reflections, of social

commitment”.

It is intended to be a station, a kind of a “stopover” where a local church community gathers around the Eucharist to celebrate, render honor, and pray in the

presence of the Lord in His Eucharistic mystery.

If you wish to go to the Congress, go to the official website of the IEC http://iec2016.ph
