P roduce good fruit as evidence of your repentance (Matthew 3:8). One of the greatest issues that was the cause of Luther’s

defection from the Church was his teaching of sola fide. The idea that we are saved by faith alone. Now this does not appear any-where in Scripture but it certainly can be inferred. But Scripture needs to be taken as a whole. To pick out certain passages to prove your point is dishonest. In other words we cannot take passages of Scripture out of context. Therefore our faith must be alive. John the Baptist challenged the leaders of his time to “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” Yes, our repentance, our faith, our religion demands that we be proactive. We cannot say, “I believe,” without doing God’s will. We cannot say, “I re-pent,” without loving others as God has loved us. Just by the mere fact that we call ourselves Christians requires that we go out and be Christians. So what does it mean to be Christian? This is the ques-tion. Today we are told we live in a post-Christian era. Since A.D. 380, the western world had been dominated by Christianity. In 1870, with the unification of Italy, the Papacy ceased to be a world-ly power, losing its territories held since the time of Charlemagne in A.D. 781 with the establishment of the Papal States when in effect the Pope became a king. But the loss of temporal power is not necessarily a bad thing. Now the Church can be more single-minded in her approach to the world – that of bringing souls to Christ. Evangelization is to be our primary purpose-bringing the Gospel to every soul. Not through colonization, conquest or political influence but by evidence of our good fruit and deep abiding faith in Christ Jesus. In the past many were believers because everyone in town was Catholic or the family was Catholic. After Catholicism became the state religion of the Roman Empire in A.D. 380 many were baptized to find favor with the Roman hierarchy. During the period of the Papal States (781-1870) many became clerics for political advancement and power rather than to be faithful priests. So in the post-Christian era we are being called to bare much fruit and purify our faith. No longer will people call themselves Chris-tian because it is politically advantageous, what mom wants or what everybody else is, but rather because they are committed to Christ and his Church, having a genuine relationship with Jesus and a true love for mankind that reflects Jesus’ love for us all. Pope emeritus Benedict once said, that the Church in the future will be a smaller but purer Church. So let’s be true followers of Christ with our good fruits as evidence of our repentance.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your ap-pointment.

Seeking Baptism or Confirmation? Want to be a Catholic?

Go and announce to my brothers that they must go into Galilee! there they will see me,….Go therefore and make disciples of all peoples baptizing them in the name of the Father of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Mark 28, 16-20

RCIA AND CATECHESIS The process by which adults (not baptized) enter the Church has come to be known as “RCIA”, which is short for “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.” The RCIA is a process, not a program. It forms a community of inquirers and their sponsors by guiding them through the edu-cation, formation and ritualization of entrance into the Catholic community through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Con-firmation, & Eucharist). Those interested in learning about the Catholic faith come together on a weekly basis to learn about the scriptures and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and at the same time, discover how the Holy Spirit is present in their lives. The RCIA process is designed for those adults who are not baptized. The primary focus of the RCIA is to form candidates in the ways of Christ with the goal of full initiation at the cele-bration of the Easter Vigil.

Baptized Protestant? Those who have been validly baptized in an ecclesial commu-nity will also will be invited to join the Catechetical Formation and will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church by a Profession of Faith and reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Orthodox Christian? Those who have been baptized in an Orthodox Church and wish to come into full communion with the Catholic Church, will be invited to join the Catechetical Formation and be re-ceived into the Church by a Profession of Faith at the Easter Vigil.

Baptized Catholic but not Confirmed? Those who are baptized Catholics but are not fully initiated & catechized are invited to Catechetical Formation and preparation in order to complete their Sacraments of Initiation (and marriage if need be) when the Bishop visits the parish. We are inviting adults for a short meeting in order to answer questions and concerns about Baptism, completion of your Sac-raments or on becoming a Catholic. Please invite any friends who want to get closer to God and may consider becoming a Catholic.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, December 12

SAINT JUAN DIEGO (1474-1548) December 9

How well Mary’s own words describe Juan Diego: “God has cast down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly” (Luke 1:52). Through him, for the diverse peoples of the Americas, indigenous and immigrant, the Mother of God became known as their Mother, too. Cuauhtlatzin, his given name, means “One Who Speaks Like an Eagle,” and Juan Die-go faithfully delivered the Virgin’s request that a church be built at Tepeyac where she had appeared to him. To the skepti-cal bishop’s request for a sign, Our Lady showed Juan Diego roses blooming through stony ground, despite winter’s cold. When he unfolded his tilma to present them to the bishop, im-printed there was Mary’s image! Her blue sash and the flower over her womb were traditional Aztec symbols of pregnancy and new life. But her features were those of a mestiza, indicat-ing mixed Aztec-European heritage. Thus to peoples too easily prone to a “clash of cultures,” Our Lady of Guadalupe remains the enduring icon of unity-in-diversity, the fruit of our one bap-tism into Jesus, her Son.
