2020 Annual Appeal Shining the Light of Christ

As disciples, we are called to radiate the love of God in our work, our relationships, our service and our giving. As a Catho-lic faith community, our common worship, hospitality, pastoral care and ministry reflect this love to the wider community. By sharing our time, unique talents and personal treasure, we par-ticipate in shining the Light of Christ ever more brightly. So far we have 13% of our goal from only 24 donors. Keep up the good work. Our goal is $44,001. Please give a prayerful donation to this cause of good. You can give in two ways: 1. Complete the donation envelope which can be found in the

church at the doors. Please be sure to indicate our parish Holy Trinity 096. You can give some now and pay the balance over ten months.

2. Go to the Archdiocesan website site www.rcan.org/sharing. Make your pledge and remember to indicate our parish Ho-ly Trinity Parish in Hackensack under “designation”.

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday. If we do not have a public celebration, the blessed palms will be made available on the

steps of the church. We ask that you make a donation for the palms. They actually cost the parish $1500 and with no Sunday collection, anything you give will be appreciated.

At the time of this printing,

Palm Sunday and The Easter Triduum will be celebrated.

We are asking that Communion Ministers and Readers vol-unteer to serve at the various liturgies. Sign up sheets are in the narthex (entrance) of the church or please call Lynn Berhalter at 201-343-5170 x206 and let her know you want to serve.

“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). My bothers and Sisters, Every crisis is an opportunity for good and to do good. Allow me to explain. A good of this crisis is that families have slowed down and are now home with one another and to one another. Our lives have become hectic. Play dates, sports practice, school plays, and work have often gotten in the way of family life. Now that we are locked in with each other we may actually have to begin to communicate, pray together and even have meals together. Being locked up and confined can seem a real burden but let’s make it a time of real family life. Play games together, watch a favorite film, say a rosary and even discover what has been happening in your children’s lives. Anther good coming out of this crisis is charity. Last week volunteers made a concerted effort to call all the families of the parish. At first I was concerned about the elderly who ought to be isolated from potential infection. Are they getting food and medical supplies? Is anyone looking after them? ? Fortunately we have found only one parishioner who couldn’t get out and had no one to help him. A parishioner generously offered to go to the market for him. Another discovery was that many of our parishioners work in restaurants. This work is their only source of income. They are out of work and are in desperate need of food. We have been able to help them with our St. Vincent de Paul Funds. A gentle-man came to the door yesterday to give me $1000 to help get food to those who have no work. God bless him and all those who have given of their time, talent and treasure to help (love) their neighbor. Soon things will be back to normal, pray God. Many will have died of this voracious virus but millions more would have learned that life is a sacred gift. In this time of trial I hope that we will have learned to cherish our families, reach out to our neighbors and to pray that God bless us with his mercy. While I still do not know if we will be able to celebrate Easter together, know that I am praying for you at my private Masses. Be well, wash your hands and know that God is especially with us in our suffering and trials. Pax Christi, Fr. Paul.

My Brothers and Sisters, In your many prayers for those suffering from the Coronavirus and the many other ailments that torture humanity, I ask you to pray for Sr. Emily. A couple of months ago she hurt her back due to osteopo-rosis. She was laid up at St. Joseph's Rehab Center in Cedar Grove. She recovered and returned to the Convent but a few days later she was back at the Rehab Center. Since then the pain has been excruciat-ing. The meds are not giving much if any relief. I have not mentioned this earlier at her request but she needs your prayers. Please say a Hail Mary or Our Father each day for her. May God relieve her of this great suffering and restore her to full vigor. God in you mercy hear her prayers and ours. Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your ap-pointment.

At Lazarus’ Tomb As we draw near to the end of Lent, today’s Gospel clearly has Je-sus’ passion and death in view. That’s why John gives us the detail about Lazarus’ sister, Mary—that she is the one who anointed the Lord for burial (see John 12:3, 7). His disciples warn against returning to Judea; Thomas even pre-dicts they will “die with Him” if they go back. When Lazarus is raised, John notices the tombstone being taken away, as well as Lazarus’ burial cloths and head covering—all de-tails he later notices with Jesus’ empty tomb (John 20:1, 6, 7). Like the blind man in last week’s readings, Lazarus represents all humanity. He stands for “dead man”—for all those Jesus loves and wants to liberate from the bands of sin and death. John even recalls the blind man in his account today (see John 11:37). Like the man’s birth in blindness, Lazarus’ death is used by Jesus to reveal “the glory of God” (see John 9:3). And again like last week, Jesus’ words and deeds give sight to those who believe (see John 11:40). If we believe, we will see—that Jesus loves each of us as He loved Lazarus, that He calls us out of death and into new life. By His Resurrection Jesus has fulfilled Ezekiel’s promise in today’s First Reading. He has opened the graves that we may rise, put His Spirit in us that we may live. This is the Spirit that Paul writes of in today’s Epistle. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will give life to we who were once dead in sin. Faith is the key. If we believe as Martha does in today’s Gospel—that Jesus is the resurrection and the life—even if we die, we will live. “I have promised and I will do it,” the Father assures us in the First Reading. We must trust in His word, as we sing in today’s Psalm—that with Him is forgiveness and salvation. Yours in Christ, Scott Hahn, PhD

Stella Coeli (Star of Heaven) The Star of Heaven that nourished the lord, drove away the plague of death which thy first parents of man brought into the world. May this bright Star now vouchsafe to extinguish that foul con-stellation whose battles have slain the people with the wound of death. O most pious Star of the Sea, preserve us from pestilence; hear us, O Lady, for thy Son honors thee by denying Thee nothing. Save us, O Jesus, for whom thy Virgin Mother supplicates Thee. V: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. O God of mercy, God of forbearance, God of forgiveness, who was moved to compassion for the affliction of your people, and who said to the Angel devastating your people: “Stay your hand,” for the love of that glorious Star, at whose dearest breast You graciously fed against the poison of our sins; grant the help of your grace, that as your Mother the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St. Raphael, your archangel, we be safely freed from every disease and from an unprovided death, and that we may be mercifully saved from the assault of utter ruin. Through You, Christ Jesus, King of Glory, who lives and reigns, world without end. Amen.

GIVE GLORY TO GOD On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Laza-rus was gravely ill, we probably would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the be-havior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a per-sistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in baptism, we are also called, by our attitudes and actions, to give glory to God. SAINT POLYCARP (died 155) February 23 “Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and he never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” Boldly answering the official who demanded he worship pagan gods, Polycarp, today’s “Senior Citizen Saint,” demonstrates that courage, far from being the preserve of the young, is a virtue cultivated through lifelong fidelity and crowned by final perse-verance. A disciple of Saint John, who is said to have consecrat-ed him bishop of Smyrna in modern-day Turkey, Polycarp wit-nesses to the truth that, whatever time and space may separate us, Jesus’ gift of the Eucharist unites us. Polycarp’s final words, preserved by the Church of Smyrna, sound like a Eucharistic Prayer in which the saint offers himself: “Lord, almighty God, Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to the knowledge of yourself . . . may I be received among the martyrs as a rich and pleasing sacrifice . . . through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ . . . through him be glory to you, together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
