Giving back to your parents with a Charitable Gift Annuity Are you looking for the perfect gift for your aging parents that would guarantee income for life? Consider opening up a charita-ble gift annuity with the Archdiocese of Newark. A charitable gift annuity can provide payments with direct deposit to your aging parents now and a gift to their parish later, all while providing you with both piece of mind and an income tax de-duction. If you would like information on this unique gift, please contact Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, Arch-diocese of Newark (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Wisdom of the Saints By obedience knowledge is increased.

—St. Thomas Aquinas Be content to obey, which is never a small thing for the soul who has chosen God as his portion, and resign youself to be for now a small hive bee able to make honey.

—St. Padre Pio Take a corpse and bring it where you will! It makes no re-sistance, does not change its attitude, does not wish to move. If you place it on a throne, it looks down and not up; if you dress it in purple, it appears only paler than before. It is so with the real-ly obedient; he never asks whither he is sent, he never is con-cerned as to how he came here, does not seek to be taken away. If he acquires honor, they only increase his humility, and the more he is praised, the more unworthy does he consider himself.

—St. Francis of Assisi in response to his brothers’ question of how to be perfectly obedient

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? Ever think about becoming a priest? If you’re a single young man and are wondering what it means to be a priest, come to dinner with seminarian Lynx Soliman. Listen to his story and how he became a seminarian studying and preparing for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary of Seton Hall University. Day: June 28, Tuesday Time: 7:00 PM Place: Rectory RSVP: Reservation appreciated but not necessary. Call Lynx at 201-343-5170.

Don’t forget to bring a friend.

J esus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the king-dom of God" (Luke 9:62). In other words, no one who looks on the manure of his

past life is ready to enter the kingdom of God. We are called my brothers and sisters to leave the past behind. How often we dwell on our past sins not letting go of the crimes, misdeeds, and immoral acts of our lives. God offers us forgiveness, but how often we negate his love and wallow in our sins. Who are we to not forgive ourselves when God himself has forgiven us? Many times I have penitents confess sins that are from the distant past, already confessed and absolved but still weighing upon the soul. Still not accepting of God's mercy, immersed in the super ego. Surely what we have done can be god-awful, unnatural, even downright evil, but if we repent with a sincere heart and intend to amend our lives, we must know that God forgives us. To keep looking back on our manure prevents us from going forward and following Jesus. If we have not died to our sins, but wallow in them like a pig wallows in its mud or a dog goes back to its vomit, then how can we be Jesus' disciples of love and mercy? If we are so immersed in ourselves, in our guilt that we ignore the divine within us, then how do we become saints doing God's will? How can we enter heaven burdened by our self-pity or our inability or unwillingness to accept God forgiveness? Under-stand too that we do not earn God's forgiveness, rather we ask for it and receive it and all God asks is that we show the same toward others who are in so much need of freedom from their sins and guilt which mire them down thus rendering them inca-pable of putting their hand to the plow to find their way to heav-en. Look not on the sins of the past or wallow in your guilt, but rather on the virtues and holiness of the future, for "What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Cor 2:9).

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Newness in our Church Summer has just arrived. It has brought about new life, new beginnings. Adapting to change is arduous. Yet change is neces-sary in order to reinvigorate & refresh us. The gift of change is like fresh air. It’s with this thought that I’ll be leaving you and transitioning to my new assignment. I thank all of you who have made beautiful impressions on my heart. My first two years as a priest would not have been as memorable without you. To the Human Concerns Committee, the Fil-Am Ministry and the St. Vincent de Paul Society as well as those who have served in ministry to the homebound, your service has inspired me. To the 8th grade CCD class 2015, the RCIA catechumens of 2016, I will remember you with special fondness. To all of you-I will never forget all that we shared which shaped our friendship. This brought unity to us in attaining our goal of proclaiming God’s mercy and love. My gratitude goes to all members of the parish, all the minis-ters and the daily Mass goers, those to whom I had administered sacraments, those who have listened to God through me, from the pulpit, the confessional box and at the carnival games. You have been my teachers and you have changed me for the better. You have been a source of strength & inspiration. Thank you. To the parish staff: the receptionists, Frances, Sheila, Mike, Lynn, Denise, Marcy, Viviana, Mamita, Julian, Tom, Lee, Chris-tine, Lucia, Deacon Greg, Deacon Francisco, Sr. Emily, Fr. Mayhel & Fr. Jose, I cannot think of a better parish team with whom to work. I promise I shall not bother you with my “Santa Clausing”, my jokes, singing and chuckling that are hilarious and contagious. You have been a family who makes my stomach and my heart full. You are my home & you’ll always be remem-bered with gratitude. To Fr. Paul, who introduced me to parish life as a priest, for entrusting groups for me to guide, helping me to strengthen my parish capability. I thank you for allowing me to make mistakes, to face my own challenges, for providing a good grasp of parish

life and rectory living and even allowing me to sing out loud at karaoke. I sincerely thank you. The Archbishop appointed me to serve as full time chaplain and educator at Paramus Catholic High School starting July 1, 2016. I will be helping with Sunday masses and will be in resi-dence at the Ascension Church in New Milford, NJ beginning in October 2016. Pray for me as I continue my priestly journey as I will pray for you. We might be in different places but, surely we clasp our hands and kneel down to the Triune God. With our faith focused upon Him, everyday at his holy altar, we will place our trust, our hope, and life, our everything.

Again thank you so much and may God’s manifold blessings be upon you. Fr. Doroteo “Teo” Layosa II.

By becoming a catechist of our young disciples and nurturing their faith, you will grow in your own faith. One catechist said, “I entered the classroom unsure of how I’d be received. It was not me but Jesus whom they encountered.” If interested or for more information contact: Mr. Julian Garcia, Coordinator for Religious Education at

Because of one less priest in the parish and a lesser number of people attending particular Masses, I find it prudent to elimi-nate the 6:30 PM Spanish Mass on Saturday Evenings. The 6:30 PM Mass on Sunday evenings will remain year long. On Sunday, the 10:00 and 11:15 Masses will be combined to a 10:30 AM Mass. I had notified you of this earlier in the year, but had to move the change up to January 1. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. The Mass book is for 2017 is open. Please feel free to have a Mass said for you dearly departed. I kindly ask that you do not attempt to take every available Sunday or Saturday Mass for your intentions. It is nice to share with others. We have plenty of weekday Masses available. Also there are many Masses available for 2016.
