Wisdom of the Saints

It is difficult to become a saint. Difficult, but not impossible. The road to perfection is long, as long as one’s lifetime. Along the way, consolation becomes rest; but as soon as your strength is restored, you must diligently get up and resume the trip.

—St. Pio No one heals himself by wounding another.

The 2018 Mass Book “He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not ex-pecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin” (2 Maccabees 12:43-46).

June 1 We’ll be accepting Mass Intentions for 2018 begin-ning June 1, 2017 at the rectory. Intentions may be offered for the dead to gain indulgences. You may offer Mass for de-ceased individuals or for families. No more than 3 Sunday Masses can be offered at this time. After July 1 you may offer more weekend Masses if they’re available. Intentions for Mass may also be offered for the living. One does not offer Mass for saints or the Blessed Mother since they are already in heaven.

I am Deacon Gabriel Angel Perdomo Jimenez, a semi-narian at Immaculate Conception Seminary of Seton Hall Uni-versity, preparing for ordination to the priesthood. I was born in Puerto Boyacá, Colombia, the oldest of four children. I felt the desire for the priesthood at a young age. I was able to enter the Seminario Cristo Sacerdote where I received my high school diploma in 2003. I started the college seminary in 2004, but only stayed there for a year due to familial financial difficulties. I worked for three years and saved enough money to pay back my college seminary debt. Through the encouragement of my former seminary priests and spiritual director, I returned to the seminary and I received my degree in philosophy in 2009. I applied to the Archdiocese of New York and I was accepted. I arrived in the US in January 2010, but had to return home be-cause my sister got cancer. In consultation with my spiritual director we discerned that I was not yet ready to continue in my formation for the time being. By the grace of God, my sister recovered, and it was time for me to return to the US. This time I was accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Newark. I arrived in August 2013. I took ESL classes in Rutgers for a year while I stayed and served at the parish of Saint Antoninus in Newark. I entered the Immaculate Conception Seminary as a first theologian in August of 2014. On May 21, 2017, I was ordained to the diaco-nate by his Eminence, Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Tobin, and assigned to Holy Trinity Church. I hope my internship at Holy Trinity Church will be one of great graces and many blessings.

This past week we once again woke up to devastating news. A suicide bomber, an ISIS sympathizer, killed and wound-ed children at a concert in Manchester, England. Just two days after President Trump’s call on the Muslim world to aggressively fight and drive out ideological extremism wherever it shows its evil face, extremist Muslims kill indiscriminately.

This incident reminds me of that popular Christian song that begins: Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me…. How true these words are. We so often mistakenly try to find peace in the world, but not until we know peace in our hearts, between neighbors and within our own families, will there be peace on earth. Christ said to his apostles that the peace he gives to us the world cannot give. The peace he speaks of begins with our reconciliation with God. We are at war with our Creator. More and more people seek out secularism, agnosticism, atheism, animism (worship of nature), and just plain indifference to any-thing supernatural. St. Paul warned us that when we begin to wor-ship creation over the Creator, we then are left to our base inclina-tions. He describes the result of turning away from God in his letter to the Romans, “Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males … burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. … They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips and scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haugh-ty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, and ruthless (Romans 1:26-31).

So my brothers and sisters, peace will only be on earth when we are at peace with God. Believe in the Creator and wor-ship Him alone. We must confess our sins and forgive those who sin against us. Finally love your neighbor as Jesus loves us. Only in this way can there be peace on earth.

Thursday, June 15th at 7:00 PM “On Carrying the Cross”

with Rich Fritzky Rich Fritzky, father of 12 and author of A Pilgrim’s

Song – Mary Varick and Her Theology of Suffering, Tidings of Great Joy – Keeping Christmas Well and What Must Needs Come – a Legacy of Gettysburg looks forward to returning to Holy Trinity on Thursday evening, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. An inspiring and moving speaker, he will suggest that the most im-portant work any of us can possibly do here on earth is to help Christ carry the cross.

In a recent appearance at Our Lady of Grace in Hobo-ken, he, a quadruple amputee who lost both legs and all but the stub of one finger, said, “What people see is my stark broken-ness and they can be thrown by it, but I have rather found my disability to be a blessing. I am, as I am, living my best life. Loss and chronic suffering were my invitation to prayer, to grace, to sacrifice, to the cross, to humility, to mercy, to joy and to you.”

He believes that all who share our faith “falteringly follow an unbounded and unlimited hope in the promise, born of Good Friday and Easter, a promise beyond our seeing or even our imagining, a promise that is bound to our willingness to love and to love without ever counting the costs or looking for any-thing in return.”

He last spoke to us in December of 2015 and it proved to be a moving experience for all who attended, but Father Paul hopes that more parishioners might take advantage and come out this time.

Rich knows Holy Trinity intimately as he spent the first 22 years of his life here as a member of our parish. His website is www.richfritzky.com and should you like to reach him in ad-vance, you can do so by emailing him at [email protected].

Memorial Mass for Oscar Bradford June 20 at 12:10

When Oscar passed away he left behind a small family who lives a distance away. He had expressed to his daughter how lonely he was and how few friends he had so she did not plan a funeral Mass. This was far from the truth. Many of us appreciat-ed and loved Oscar. On June 20, I will celebrate a memorial mass for Oscar at 12:10 PM and then I will go to George Washington Cemetery in Paramus and bless his grave. Afterward I will take lunch. I invite anyone who cared for Oscar to join me.
