Last Week’s Collection/Colecta de Semana Pasada: $9575.00 Misang Pilipino: $340.00

"I will be their God and they shall be my people." -JEREMIAH 31:33 What does it mean to be God's people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren't "owners" of anything, we are merely "stewards" of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.

In this week’s paper I read with great distress that the Presbyterian Church has voted to sanctify the attempted mar-riage of same sex couples. How a group of people can gather, make a proposition and vote on it as if it were valid is beyond the pale. Our opinions, our choices, our thoughts are not abso-lute, binding or necessarily truthful. Just because a majority votes for it does not make it valid, licit or morally acceptable. Only God's teachings are absolute. Our Lord's instruction on sexuality and marriage is immutable. The parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that the Church leaders must take care of the flock, protecting it from all evil. The man being attacked by the robber symbolizes the des-perate action of the Evil One attacking us and leaving us for dead. Sin wounds more deeply and kills more surely than the sword. Many religious leaders, more concerned about public opinion and their reputation, come along but bypass the wound-ed man leaving him to die in his sin, but finally the Samaritan comes and he rescues the wounded man; this Samaritan is Jesus. The Samaritan then gives the care of the man to the inn keeper, i.e. the Church, to nurse him back to health and when the Samar-itan returns he will pay any final debts. Yes, Jesus has given the Church the care of sinners who are saved by Christ and who anoints the wounds of sin with the oil of salvation. The Church must give pastoral and even material care for those infected or wounded by sin. Sin manifests itself in many ways: in immoral behavior, in certain sicknesses, in apa-thy, in animosity and war, etc. Yet the Church is here to care for the wounded souls, nursing them back to health, bringing them back to holiness, anointing their wounds. The Sacraments that she administers is a big part of that: The Baptism of course washes away the original sin, confession absolves the personal sins, and the anointing of the Holy Spirit at confirmation heals the wounds that sin has caused making us full participating members in the Church's mission to those wounded by sin. Mar-riage and Holy Orders, the Sacraments of service, are in place to continue the faith for future generations: Holy Orders in which the priest administers the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Marriage in that it procreates the next generation who ought to receive the faith and spiritual healing from their parents. This is why baptism ought not to be delayed. Yes marriage is a life giving relationship of a man and a woman. The Book of Genesis is clear when it says, "Male and female he created them." Jesus Christ is unequivocal when he teaches, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate" (Mt 19:4-6). Marriage is a sacred union of one man and one woman. No parliament, no court, no religious body, not even the Pope can change the truth. To attempt to do so is an affront to the Creator who made us male and female, who sanctified marriage from the beginning and raised it to a Sacrament in his Church. When King Henry VIII wanted a divorce, the Pope denied him his request. He took control of the bishops of England and co-erced them to capitulate to his demands and grant him a divorce and he convinced the Parliament to recognize him as the Su-preme Head of the Church of England. That act of defiance and self-aggrandizement has led to the situation we have now in which people believe they can vote and change natural law ac-cording to their will, defying or ignoring God's will. Our Blessed Mother at Fatima said, "Pray, Pray, Pray for sinners. Make sacri-fice for their crimes." Please take some time and pray for your brothers and sisters who have followed knowingly or unknow-ingly the Father of Lies, forsaking faith in Jesus Christ.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

¡Buena Cuaresma! Fr. Mayhel Velásquez.
