Supplementing Retirement with a Planned Gift: Are you nearing retirement or are already retired and are look-ing to make a year-end gift? If so, a Charitable Gift Annuity can be a way to supplement your retirement income and help your parish at the same time. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, don’t forget about the IRA Charitable Rollover. Let the Archdiocese of Newark help you set up a Charitable Gift Annuity by contact-ing Theresa Lynch in the Planned Giving Office. She can be reached at (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Wisdom of the Saints It is not those who commit the least faults who are most holy, but those who have the greatest courage, the greatest generosity, the greatest love, who make the boldest efforts to overcome themselves, and are not immoderately apprehensive of tripping.

—St. Francis de Sales After seven years in the religious life, I still am weak and imper-fect. I always feel, however, the same bold confidence of be-coming a great saint because I don’t count on my merits since I have none, but I trust in Him who is Virtue and Holiness.

—St. Therese of Lisieux One should not wish to become a saint in four days but step by step.

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS (formally AAA)

This year your donation to the Annual Appeal will go to Semi-narian Education, Catholic Charites, Parishes in financial need, Catholic education, Youth Ministry, Priest Retirement and Cam-pus Ministry in our many colleges. We are all asked to give 10% of our blessings as a tithe. Usu-ally 5% to support the parish & 5% to your favorite charities. Perhaps you would like to support the Archdiocese in many of its charitable works by pledging to the Annual Appeal.

The 2018 Mass Book “He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrec-tion of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin” (2 Maccabees 12:43-46).

June 1 We will be accepting Mass Intentions for A.D. 2018 beginning June 1, 2017 at the rectory. Intentions may be of-fered for the dead to gain indulgences for them. You may offer Mass for deceased individuals (no more than 3 please) or for families. Intentions for Mass may also be offered for the living. One does not offer Mass for saints or the Blessed Mother since they are already in heaven.

My Dear Brothers & Sisters, I take this opportunity to thank you all for the kind words, expressions of sympathy and Masses offered for my father, Joseph. It has been only 6 months since my dear mother passed away from lung cancer and now my father died of the same disease brought on by the use of tobacco. When I was a young teen I begged them to stop smoking. My mother had already lost her cousin and uncle to lung cancer but even this did not dissuade them from continuing in that foul habit which would shorten their natural lives. Addiction to chemical substances, in this case nicotine, is often greater that the natural desire to live. While some can quit cold turkey and others use aids, many find the perceived pleasure to be greater than the harm to health and ultimately premature death. While we cannot live this earthly life forever, God has given us this life to live well so that we can serve him all the more. My mom and dad served God as excellent parents. My broth-ers and I grew up to be fine men who love their family, country and God. May all be as fortunate as I to have parents like mine.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

¿QUÉ VAMOS A HACER?
