Can you tell us what you were thinking and how you were feeling, before, during and after the race? The night before I was so excited to race and couldn't really contain myself! I thought about my race plan, how I would execute it to win the race and how I would feel if I actually did win the race. I went to sleep and once I woke didn’t think about the race for a couple of hours until I was ready to warm up, now I could use the way my body felt to reassure myself that I was feeling good and I was ready. It was my grandfather’s birthday and I wanted to swim well, so made it my goal to get on the podium for him. During the race I was thinking through my race plan. I was thinking about my turns and that I should be disciplined enough to hold my breath long enough to have a really good turn. Following the race I was in a state of shock. I was aware of what I was doing at the time and that I was in front but I could not believe that the race had gone perfectly. I was most shocked about the time that I had swam rather than the result because I had no idea that I was capable of that sort of time! I was happy for my coach because he had worked just as hard if not harder than me the whole season to create the training environment for me and the rest of my squad.

When did you fi rst become interested in swimming and at what point did you realise you wanted to make it a career? In 2010 I watched the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and I really wanted to compete at that level for a Scotland team, so from that moment I had my heart set on Glasgow being my stage. Following my performances in 2012 at the European Junior Championships I felt that I should take swimming more seriously and I made my move to the swimming programme based at The University of Stirling. I needed somewhere with a professional atmosphere where everyone had a common goal and were willing to put themselves through anything to achieve it. It was once I moved club that I made swimming my life.

What’s a typical day like for you?I rise at 6.45am and have a cereal and an apple usually before driving to the pool fora 7.30 start. Following my pool workout I have another snack and head over to the gym. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I follow a weights program and on Tuesdays and Thursdays a power based circuit, all provided by the SportScotland Institute of Sport. After the gym I head home and make breakfast, I like to have a 4 egg omelette with spinach and maybe bacon too. I also have 2 bagels and a bowl of porridge. Sometimes after breakfast, I can have a nap making sure I use all the free time I have to ensure that I can train the best I can in the evening.

INTERVIEW

09Sport / Interview

INTERVIEWINTERVIEWINTERVIEW

Who was your last text

from and what does it say?

My last text is from a friend

saying "You left the tag on,

you dafty!"

Last fi lm you saw

at the cinema?

The Rise of the Planet

of the Apes.

Favourite meal?

Lasagne or Steak Pie.

What song gets you up

on the dancefl oor?

I don't really have one

particular song that gets me

on the dancefl oor because if

I am out dancing it’s usually

to celebrate something so

I don’t need an excuse. Ha!

If you weren’t a professional

swimmer, what occupation

would you choose?

A billionaire vigilante that

invests his time and money

into fi ghting crime on the

streets of Gotham. That

would be ideal but I don't

how to apply to be Batman.

At around 2.30 I head back to the pool to stretch before I get back in the water at 3.30. Three days a week I have a core circuit to attend before the pool session as well. Once training is fi nished I'll head back to my fl at, make some dinner and just chill out before bed or go and meet friends.

Our campaign, STAY GAMES ACTIVE encourages young people to stay active post-Games, which could involve trying out a new sport. What would you say to a young person considering sport as a hobby, but maybe aren’t sure which sport to try out?Try all sports that you have watched at the Games and fi nd which one you enjoy the most. It is important that you do something active in your life but it is more important you enjoy it at the same time. Also fi nd something that relaxes you because I fi nd that if anything is on my mind and troubling me that I can use swimming to fi nd the answer or chill me out which is important to me.

Under 18s in Glasgow can swim for free in any of the 12 Glasgow Life pools in the city. Why do you think young people should make the most of this offer whilst it’s free?It is a really good chance to try it out and see if you enjoy it and maybe see the benefi ts that swimming can have to your mindset, physique and outlook on life.

What’s next/what are you training for at the moment? I'm currently fi nished for the summer but I'm travelling to Singapore to take part in an event where some of the best swimmers in the world lead a swimming master class for local kids and then have a small race to show them what it is all about. I'm just going to use this time to see my family and also friends that I have not seen for a while because of my training commitments throughout the year.

What_fashion_item_should_EVERYONE

have_on_THEIr_Christmas_list?

For the gents, a good old cable knit jumper worn

with a buttoned up denim shirt. For girls, shearling

aviator jackets are making a comeback. I like mine

to be leather with a black faux fur trim.

Name_one_item_that_everyone

should_have_in_their_wardrobe

all_year_round?

Both boys and girls should have a checked

shirt. They can be worn all year round in lots of

different ways and can dress an outfi t up or down.

What_are_your_tips_for_saving_MONEY_on_clothes?

Don’t invest too heavily in trends. Also buy items that will go with things you

already have in your wardrobe to get more for your money and to stop you

saying, “I have nothing to wear” when you open your wardrobe.

What_will_you_be_wearing_on

Christmas_Day?

It’s tradition for me to wear a dress on Christmas

Day, so I will be on the lookout for something in a

Christmassy fabric, like crushed velvet, in a smock

style so I can eat my weight in Christmas dinner!

Where_do_you_get_inspiration

on_style?

Instagram. I follow loads of bloggers and get

inspired by all the outfi t shots they share.

InterviewInterviewInterviewInterviewInterview

Tell us about your background and journey

into sport.

I come from a very sporty family. I remember

as a child having homemade football goals

and a washing line for a badminton net. I love

sport but it’s down to my parents giving me

opportunities to try lots of things, playing with

me a lot and helping me to get better.

Our campaign, STAY GAMES ACTIVE

encourages young people to stay active

post-Games. What advice would you give

to a young person considering sport as a

hobby, but maybe aren’t sure what to try

out?

It’s often determined by what local facilities

and classes are available in your community,

but it’s also down to you. Seek out what’s

available in your area and either go along

on your own or with a friend. The legacy of

the Games is down to the people who try

the activities.

Young people have a lot going on with

school, exams and part-time jobs. Do you

think they should try to fit sport into their

busy lives and if so, why?

It’s not always just about sport, its about

being physically active, and you can be active

by doing lots of things that aren’t actually

sport, such as dance classes, or Body Combat

classes can be great fun especially if you

want to go along with friends for a really good

workout. If you’ve got an hour you can go into

a gym or a class and just feel better about

yourself. I want to encourage people to try

sport, but actually just being active is more

important than getting caught up in sport.

Who in the sporting world do you admire most?

Liz McColgan is a huge inspiration.

I remember watching her winning her big

titles when I was younger. I was watching

this lady who came from a very underprivileged background, who had this

incredible single-mindedness to succeed on

the world stage. I have always admired her

because she is so self-driven and achieved

the very heights of her sport. I also admire

Chris Hoy who is an enormously high achiever

and incredible athlete, but he’s just a typical

Scot – a lovely down-to-earth, humble guy.

“The legacy of the Games

is down to the people who

try the activities”

where_to_ find_support:

I come from a family of six: me, my three younger brothers, big sister and mother. My family originated from Congo but we are currently living in Glasgow and have been for the past 12 years.

I think I was born into a relationship with sport, a relationship that has grown into the love/hate kind. My passion has always given me the challenge to try something new and being the fastest boy in my primary school was a title I held proud. My talent was noticed at a school visit to Bellahouston Academy. I was handed an application form and invited to a sports trial and interview which I successfully completed, and that was when everything changed – from running in the playground for fun to representing The Glasgow School of Sport competitively which I do with pride.

Going from my own comfort to the company of medical staff day in, day out was never in my line of sight but it has brought me confidence and also the blue print to conquering any problem I have since gone on to face.

I was 13 when I became diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma; a type of cancer that had paralysed me from the abdomen down, blocking my nervous system along my spine. It was only half way through the chemotherapy that I found out that I had cancer, which came as a shock because I had still not lost my hair so I was unaware what to feel. Being a teenager and having the power to lie in bed all day

might seem like heaven on earth, but when it’s not out of your own will it soon became frustrating, as all I could think of was being on the track with my team mates. I soon had to change my mindset and turn all the negative thoughts into positives with my mantra now being what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Being in hospital, I was never without company as I had family, friends, hospital staff and other patients to aid me get through the rough days. I was still receiving chemotherapy when I began school again in August 2011 which was a shock to the staff at school and they suggested that I start when I had completely finished the course, but my determination proved otherwise.

My recovery was slow at first but the school of sport helped as they respected my choice of getting on with training with everyone else and not treat me differently. They provided me with a full training regime that has got me where I am now. Without it I would still be stuck on level one, trying to get back to the top.

I am still a student at the Glasgow School of Sport and one of three pupils that received a Commonwealth Sports Scholarship award from the Wheatley Group. I train five times a week to one day achieve my goals of competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2020 Olympics. I want to be at the apex of my sport and entertain crowds of thousands. I know my family and my coaches have faith in me and I want to do them proud. Being ill and getting back on my feet was a coming of age experience. Overcoming this makes me feel that I don't see why anyone else can't fulfil their dreams. It's an honour to share my experience and hopefully motivate people to realise that anything is possible.

Growing_up,_did_you_

always_want_to

be_a_teacher?Always! I would play 'schools' a lot with

my older sister and take turns being the

teacher. I would go in a mood if she didn't

give me a star for my sums! I had a great

teacher at Primary school, Miss Boyle,

who I looked up to and I remember

thinking 'I want to be just like that!’

What_made_you

realize_teaching_was

the_career_for_you?I've always loved children. I come from

a big family and being one of 6 there

was always someone to look after!

I also helped my dad teach kids Tae

Kwondo at his club and I loved that too!

The kids always looked up to you for help,

support and encouragement and when

they achieved their goals it was a great

feeling to know you played a part in that.

With Primary Education courses

being one of the top 10 in the UK,

we spoke to Julie McGhee “Miss

McGhee” at Lourdes Primary

School to find out more…

Careers 27

What_was_involved_in

your_university_course?A lot of hard work! Course assignments

for each curricular area, presentations,

placements and a lot of late nights! It was

all worth it in the end though as I'm now

doing a job that I absolutely love. I would

do it all over again if I had to. We also

had a great group of people in my year

so that made the experience all that

more enjoyable.

What's_a_typical_day

like_for_you_now?There's not one day that's the same!

A 'typical' day would include different

aspects of Language and Maths being

covered. The children have lots of

opportunities for active learning and

we also encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning

which helps prepare them when they

progress through school. Over the week

we would also cover a range of curricular

areas including Religious Education,

Health, Art, Music, Drama, Technology,

Science and Social Subjects. I try to

make sure my lessons are fun, active

and creative to keep the children engaged and motivated. I also have to

make sure that my lessons are catered

to meet the needs of all the learners in

my care.

Were_there_any_surprises

you_found_with_the_job?

Expect the unexpected! The children

continue to amaze and surprise me by

bringing new and exciting experiences

into the classroom every day. There

is never a dull moment! Everyday is a

learning day – even for me!

What_advice_would_you

give_to_those_considering

primary_school_teaching

as_a_career?To me, I have the best job in the world,

so naturally I would encourage anyone

with an interest in this career to go for it.

Be prepared to work hard and be 100%

committed. The children deserve it and

it'll make the job so much more worthwhile when you fi nally get there.

What's_been_your_career

highlight_so_far? There are a few! I think it would have to

be when I got my permanent job in

Lourdes. The year I was interviewed

there were hundreds of extremely skilled

applicants and only a limited number of

positions. I had gained a great deal of

experience from previous placements

that I was able to refl ect upon. When I

received my letter for the permanent post

I was over the moon!

Finally,_what_do_you_think

makes_a_good_teacher?

For me, someone who is motivated by

their job and has a great deal of patience

and understanding. Also, someone who

is continually refl ecting on their own

practice and willing to learn and develop

new and existing skills. You should always

strive to be the best you can be; for

yourself and the children in your care!
