originaladjectiveadjective: original
1. not dependent on other people's ideas; inventive or novel. "a subtle and original thinker"
3
What makes something original?
Does originality actually exist or do we
all simply build from what we have seen
and heard?
What enables us to dare to be different
from others or independent of the context
in which we are working?
What does the future of music look like?

Now fulfilling a busy schedule as a conductor, this is an increasingly rare opportunity to hear Christian perform in recital and will be his only appearance in the UK.
Christian certainly loves to break down barriers with the audience and is a huge name in both the classical and brass worlds (*he was voted the greatest brass player in history by Classic FM.) He has curated tonight’s programme to explore both Romantic and contemporary pieces - including one of his own compositions - and is joined by his partner of 40 years, Roland Pöntinen, who will perform the Rachmaninov and Liszt pieces as piano solos.

The RNCM and BBC Philharmonic are honoured to welcome George Benjamin to Manchester for this retrospective of his work. Benjamin is truly one of the musical giants of our time – the visceral quality of the music he creates absorbs the listener in constantly shifting layers of sound, from the startling to the touching and from the virtuosic to the beautifully simple. And in the Conversation session, you can hear about his ideas and thought processes first hand.

The cast list for the 2019 RNCM Brass Band Festival reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the best that the brass band world has to offer. We welcome two world-class soloists – Ian Bousfield (trombone) and David Childs (euphonium) – seven leading bands, including the National Champions – Foden’s Band – and The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army, as well as Foden’s Youth Band and RNCM’s own outstanding brass bands and ensembles. The primary creative focus celebrates the centenary of one of the most highly regarded, yet enigmatic brass band composers of the 20th century, Wilfred Heaton.

‘I think we should try different gestures more often, even when there’s a risk of looking like an ass… I’m not particularly excited about the persona of the performer overshadowing the repertoire, but I often feel that the nature of the concert makes us performers seem detached and alien in a way that might actually obscure the message in the music…’

THE LOST WORDSSPELL SONGS
Singing nature back to life through the power of music, poetry, art and magic…
Those already familiar with The Lost Words by author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris, will know it as a work full of wildness, beauty and power. It is a place where poems become spells or incantations, and where art makes magic.
The Lost Words began as a response to the removal of everyday nature words from a widely used children’s dictionary. But it then grew to become a much broader protest at the loss of the natural world around us, as well as a celebration of the creatures and plants with which we share our lives.
Commissioned by Folk by the Oak, The Lost Words: Spell Songs brings together eight remarkable musicians - Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Kerry Andrew, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux - whose music already engages deeply with landscape and nature, to respond to the creatures, art and language of The Lost Words. And as part of the performance, Jackie Morris will create live illustrations alongside the musicians.

RNCM SESSION ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR WITH MARIO JOSE+ SUPPORT: NORTHERN VOICES
Andy Stott director Mario Jose voice
So earlier this year, American singer Mario Jose visited the RNCM to present a student masterclass and work with our Pop Choir in preparation for their gig with our Session Orchestra. And our students loved the experience!
Mario returns to play a fully-fledged show with our students and they couldn’t be happier. This is the first time we have welcomed a guest vocalist with the Session Orchestra and Mario’s credentials are impressive. As a student at Berklee, he was part of the award-winning a cappella group, Pitch Slapped. In season 12 of American Idol, he was Mariah Carey’s favourite. And as if that wasn’t enough, he has performed with Pentatonix, Justin Bieber, Prince, Meghan Trainor, John Legend and many, many more…

RNCM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRARobert Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor Gustav Mahler Symphony No 5 in C sharp minorVassily Sinaisky, Rebecca Tong conductors Yukyung Na celloAfter its première in 1904, Mahler is reported to have said of his own Fifth Symphony: ‘Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance 50 years after my death.’ The emotional scope of the work is indeed huge. In fact, Herbert von Karajan once said that when you hear the piece: ‘you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath.’
The programme is completed by Schumann’s introspective Cello Concerto, a quietly revolutionary piece and one of the three great Romantic works for the instrument.

Alongside his art, science and inventions, Leonardo was himself a musician, he invented a musical instrument - the viola organista – and, in his writings, he described music as ‘shaping the invisible’.
Introduced by Professor Martin Kemp, this immersive concert with projections matches Da Vinci’s iconic art with vocal masterworks, illuminating the images through the prism of music.
2019 is also the 50th anniversary of more recent scientific endeavours, the Moon landing and Concorde’s first flight. Shaping the invisible culminates in a new commission on a theme of Leonardo and scientific endeavour with poetry by Gillian Clarke and music by Adrian Williams.
This is the first performance of this new project by I Fagiolini, an ensemble with a reputation for pioneering live events.

This year’s Day of Song showcases originality in song, exploring the innovative composers who broke new ground in the galvanisation of poetry and music. We explore Schumann’s Liederjahr (‘year of song’) and music by his contemporaries, alongside exciting new commissions. David Owen Norris presents a stimulating lecture-recital exploring Thomas Hardy in song, with a focus on Britten’s stunning song cycle Winter Words. We also welcome RNCM tutors and internationally-renowned singers Paul Nilon and Louise Winter to perform alongside students in a theatrical presentation of Janáček’s intimate masterpiece The Diary of One Who Disappeared. Distinguished tenor Christoph Prégardien closes the day, performing Schubert’s Winterreise in a magical arrangement for chamber ensemble.

THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESSRALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
David Parry conductor Jonathan Cocker director Bob Bailey set and costume designer Ian Sommerville lighting designer Rebecca Tong assistant conductor Kevin Thraves chorus master Bethan Rhys Wiliam production assistant/movement RNCM Opera Orchestra RNCM Opera ChorusThe Pilgrim’s Progress tells the story of an Everyman figure – Pilgrim – who journeys from his home, the City of Destruction, through a series of challenges and temptations to the Celestial City and salvation. This new RNCM Opera production is set during the First World War, and we see the Pilgrim as a deserter who leaves his fellow soldiers behind to embark on a quest for better things.
Inspired by John Bunyan’s text (Vaughan Williams actually kept a copy of the book with him while he served in the trenches) the composer turned the 1678 religious allegory into a universal tale of spirituality moving beyond the confines of Christianity. However, The Pilgrim’s Progress unashamedly sides with the Pilgrim in stressing the righteousness of his journey.
This unconventional piece (Vaughan Williams called it a ‘morality’ rather than an opera) is the culmination of the composer’s 45-year musical journey, the ultimate expression of the wide variety of his musical style, exhibiting fabulous transparency of orchestration and a luminous sound. It is spiritual rather than religious and very uplifting, focussing on the light rather than the dark. We see the two sides of Vaughan Williams – the gentle lyricism of his pastoral style and his darker side that lived with the horrors of war. It is a defining work for the composer - a coherent time-lapse of his music.
This production will be sung in English with surtitles.

HAUSCHKARenowned pianist and Oscar-nominated film composer Hauschka returns to the RNCM to perform his new recording, A Different Forest. His style changes with every album he releases and this time, he does away with his customary instrumental preparations to return to the pure piano.
The central theme of the album is the experience of nature as the basis for his understanding of life and the composition of music. And for Hauschka, the concept of nature is epitomised by the image of a forest.
Hauschka has had a productive decade, working on projects in the fields of theatre, dance and classical ensemble works. In recent years, he has built a prolific career writing scores for films, including his soundtrack for the 2016 hit Lion, scored in collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran. This year, he also wrote the music for the new US mini-series Patrick Melrose, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

GRETCHEN PETERS WITH HER BAND AND THE SOUTHERN FRIED STRING QUARTETSTRINGS ATTACHED
Following her two AMA Awards for 2015’s Blackbirds, Gretchen Peters’ 2018 album Dancing With the Beast marked another career high. Blending shades of country-rock, indie-folk and Southern gothic with Peters’ smokily honeyed voice, it features all female characters, from pre-teen to elderly, whose stories vividly illuminate both the personal and political. Reprising her headlining set at the 2019 Celtic Connections Festival, Glasgow, Gretchen will be joined by her band, led by long-time musical partner Barry Walsh, and the Southern Fried String Quartet.

Ask anyone who grew up through the 70s and they will be able to tell you where they first heard Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells. SWEET CHARITYBook by Neil Simon Music by Cy Coleman Lyrics by Dorothy Fields Based on an original screenplay by Federico Fellini, Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano Produced for the Broadway stage by: Fryer, Carr and Harris Conceived, Staged and Choreographed by Bob FosseJoseph Houston director Madeleine Healey associate director George Strickland musical director Mariyka Bolubasz choreographer Emma Swirkowski associate choreographerCharity Hope Valentine always tries to look on the bright side of life, despite working in a rundown New York dance hall and contending with a seemingly endless run of bad dates. Determined to find love, Charity falls for suave actor Vittorio Vidal, but their romance is all too brief. However, when Charity finds herself stuck in an elevator with the reserved accountant Oscar Lindquist, it turns out that she may have finally met her match…
With its brilliant choreography (who can forget the Bob Fosse choreographed Big Spender sequence in the 1969 film version?) and iconic songs, Sweet Charity is the perfect vehicle for our musical theatre group, RNCM Young Company.
