01 proteCtion

Use a daily moisturiser with an SPF factor of 15 or higher as it will help to protect your skin and combat any early signs of ageing. Remember that you’ll be exposed to harmful rays even on a cloudy day. allow 10 minutes for it to absorb before applying other make up.

02 lighten up

Try not to wear foundation in summer, for a fresher lighter look try a tinted moisturiser, apply with a damp sponge for an even look. a little concealer dabbed under the eye will give added radiance.

03 SCruB up Well

Scrub & exfoliate your face and body to keep it looking fresh.

04 fake it

Sunbeds are out and bronzer and tanning products are in. There is nothing better than the appearance of a healthy glow to make you feel better, but this can be achieved safely using bronzer and tanning products.

05 eSSential Waterproofing

There is nothing worse than running mascara and make up, so if you plan to be near water or doing an outdoor activity use waterproof make up and mascara.

06 the eyeS have it

Eye shadows in lighter, neutral shades are perfect for the summer. For a more summery appearance, swap your black mascara for brown-black or brown, a touch of mascara and a little eye liner will ‘open’ up the eye and bring your face to life.

01 Beat the frizz

Deep condition your hair weekly as humid weather can cause frizz.

02 don’t BloW it

The sun gives you enough heat already so instead use some wax or an alcohol free texturiser and leave it to dry naturally.

04 aCCeSSorieS

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, accessories including bows and embellished slides and combs are making a comeback. If you find they slip out of your hair, simply backcomb the area of hair first.

05 Summer lookS

Hair seems to get oily, sweaty and greasy in the summer due to the humid temperatures, so wear your hair in a loose wavy style or side braids for a bang on trend look. See our feature below for more info.

piCk a Cardio exerCise You enjoY or else You won’t keep it up for verY long, like running, walking, swiMMing, biking, hiking, rowing, stepper, etC. these Can be done outdoors as well as indoors, but with tYpiCal sCottish weather it Might be safer to head inside!

TonE Up02

Don’t stick to the same workout routine for too long, or your body will adjust to the stress level. For cardio, mix days on the crosstrainer with the treadmill. Ideally young adults should do a minimum of 30 minutes moderate-intensity exercise, 5 days a week. alternating machines to target different parts of your body!

MixiT Up

For cardio, you’ll want to incorporate hills. This will make you stronger and make your workout time even more effective. Take them easy at first, but once you’re used to them, up your pace!

TakE iTEasY

Limit your sugar intake. It’s easy to say you should cut it out completely for great results, but let’s be realistic, we can’t do that! It’s all about balance so instead make chocolate a treat for weekends.

know YoUR liMiTs

to build MusCle You need to CoMbine strength training with a diet of CarbohYdrate-riCh foods like pasta and riCe, but You’ll also need a little More protein (Meat, eggs, Milk) to provide MusCle.eat sMall aMounts of protein and CarbohYdrate before and after strength training. a low-fat Milkshake or sMoothie is a great option!

MUsclE Up01

Make sure your technique is correct. Theres no point in lifting weights if you aren’t targeting your muscles properly. If you’re unsure speak to one of the instructors at your gym.

gooDTEchniqUE

Involve more muscles and repeat the same amount of exercises per muscle i.e. 5 x’s rows and 5 x’s bench presses. This will ensure balanced training and allow you to grow quickly and safely.

sTiMUlaTEThE MUsclEs

Be versatile with your workout. Weight machines are great and safe for targeting specific muscles but free weights can be used for loads of different exercises.

bEvERsaTilE

Muscles don’t grow when you’re working out, they grow when you’re resting. Start with 3 full body workouts during the week and focus on intensity not how long it took. Get lots of rest and be careful not to overwork yourself!

bEcaREfUl

During exercise our bodies get hot, and our main way of cooling down is to sweat, which means we lose fluid. Try to drink 300ml to 500ml of fluid in the 15 minutes before your workout, then about 150ml to 250ml every 15 minutes during exercise.

ChOOse A hIGh spf WITh UvA pROTeCTIOn: SPF alone doesn’t work as well without UVa protection. UVa rays can seriously damage you skin as well as increase your risks of developing skin cancer, so make sure your lotion carries both.

LIps: Everyone forgets their lips need special protection from the sun, or they’ll end up dry, flaky and sore – not a good look. Vaseline makes a great SPF 15 lipbalm for just £1.69 or splash out on Uvistat lipscreen SPF 50, £4.95 (from Boots).

Cool eYewear: Shield your eyes from those harsh UVa and UVB rays when you’re in the sun and you’ll not only look cool, you’ll be protecting your eyes against long term damage.

Re-AppLy: One application of sunscreen won’t fully protect you for the full day – especially if you’re on holiday and in and out of the pool. Make sure you re-apply every few hours, particularly on your shoulders, face and ears.

bOys beWARe: If your hair is shaved then it’s vulnerable and unprotected. Make sure you use at least SPF 30 up there or even better wear a hat at all times! here are soMe Celebrities

doing sit-ups will help give Me a flat stoMaCh?

qUEsTionTwo

true false

FALsE: You have no control over where you will lose weight with exercise or dieting. You can tone specific areas of the body like your abs with sit-ups and other abdominal exercises, but they won’t wipe out the fat that’s covering them. You can try regular aerobic exercise to help you lose weight all over.

brisk walking is enough to keep MY heart healthY?

qUEsTionThREE

true false

TrUE: Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous to be beneficial. Brisk walking or swimming – on most days of the week can help keep your heart healthy.

if MY MusCles aren’t sore the daY after a workout, i haven’t pushed MYself hard enough?

qUEsTiononE

true false

FALsE: Forget the idea of “no pain, no gain.” a little muscle soreness is OK, anything more means you’re pushing too hard or too fast and could put yourself at risk for injuries.

if You stop training with weights, the MusCle that You have will turn to fat?

qUEsTionfivE

true false

FALsE: Muscle is muscle, fat is fat. But if you stop exercising – particularly if you stop strength-training – you’ll lose muscle mass, which will make your body look less toned.

You burn More fat when You exerCise first thing in the Morning on an eMptY stoMaCh?

qUEsTionsix

true false

FALsE: Your body needs food as fuel, Eat a banana before your morning workout so you don’t “hit the wall.”

You should alwaYs stretCh before Cardio and weight training?

qUEsTionsEvEn

true false

FALsE: a cold muscle will tear much more easily than a warm one. Warming up is important but this can be done in other ways such as running which gets your heart beating and your body warmer. Stretching is best saved for after your workout when your muscles are primed and warm.

You Can be fit and fat?

qUEsTionfoUR

true false

TrUE: Research shows that overweight people can have good cardiovascular health if they exercise regularly. Still, many experts say it’s best to be both fit and lean.

He was an amazing player even at 11 years old. Paulo Cardoso, his first coach at Sporting Lisbon, said: ‘at the end of the game the players gathered around him, they knew he was a special kid.’

as a teenager he would train using weights on either foot and then dribble with the ball. He thought it would improve his technique because without weights he would be even faster.

after he played against Manchester United in a friendly Sir alex Ferguson said: ‘at half-time I knew I had to sign this boy. He was sensational.’

‘I’m not worried I’m young. It’s an incentive to do the best I can. I’m living a dream I never want to wake up from.’Christiano Ronaldo

as a child he suffered from a hormonal problem that was preventing him from growing as normal. Barcelona tempted him to Spain by offering to help with his medical bills.

He is one of the highest paid footballers in the world on an annual salary that is close to £30million.

‘When I am running with the ball, nothing else matters and I think I am the only person on the entire planet.’Lionel Messi

sUpeR fACTs: He made his first debut in 2002 aged 16 against Spurs at Goodison Park and is Everton’s youngest ever goalscorer.

your

caREERfUTUREIt’s never too late to start thinking about which career path to follow. Whether you’re choosing Standard Grade or Higher subjects or maybe you’re heading off to University after the summer, stopping and thinking about your future can be pretty scary, but a good way to start is to think about what motivates you as a person. Here are some of our tips to help you prepare:

Make a list of aCtivities You’ve enjoYed - both inside and outside sChool, College or work. what was it about theM You liked? e.g. You Might find that You enjoYed:

getting to know More about a partiCular subjeCt / solving Challenging probleMs / working as part of a teaM / Meeting new people

get the skills and QualifiCations You’ll need Interviews give employers a chance to meet potential candidates, but they don’t give the full story. Having extra skills on your C.V. is a great way to stand out, especially if they are appropriate to your chosen career - just don’t overdo it!

getting a teMporarY job. Volunteering or work experience will help you increase your skills and impress employers, not to mention make contacts for when you’re fully qualified! You can also look into gap year activities (see page 26 for more info).

look out for fairs and events. Especially if they focus on a career you’re considering. Go prepared and write a list of questions you want to ask. They may also be able to provide leaflets and booklets on their profession. If in doubt a careers adviser will also be able to give you some tips on how to prepare.

talk it to with the people who know You best Once you’ve got all the expert advice, it can be useful to talk to family and friends. In the end, you’ll have the best idea of what’s right for you.

froM there You should have a good idea of what You want to aChieve and feel Confident enough to reaCh for the stars! good luCk!

a gap year iS an option more and more SChool, College and univerSity leaverS are ConSidering. Some people prefer to travel, Work and re-Charge Before jumping BaCk into eduCation.

01 plan ahead

Some prefer taking a Gap Year between School and Uni, whilst others prefer waiting until their education is finished completely. Whatever your preference, research your choice and make sure it will benefit you in the future as future employers will want to know what you did on your Gap Year and saying you did nothing won’t look good!

02 Be finanCially SeCure

Loads of Gap Year students work for the first six months and then travel, using the money they’ve earned in the second six months – a great way to experience the best of both worlds!

03 do your reSearCh

Make sure you know all you need to about your chosen destination, get a good guidebook and carry out lots of research into its laws, customs and language, also think about how you will travel and where will you stay and try and book your first nights accommodation. Finally if you plan on working make sure you have the correct work permit and visas.

04 no fear

Don’t let the fear put you off: Earth is a big planet, but as long as you’re well prepared you should be feeling ready for the challenge! Even the remotest countries have email access.

05 Be preparedOkay so you haven’t even left yet, but you don’t want to come home after what may be the best year of your life to… nothing. Make sure you have College/Uni preparations sorted and your deferred year is confirmed so you have nothing to worry about while you’re away!

The book tells the story of Bree who has recently become a ‘newborn’ vampire recruited by Victoria to close in on Bella and the Cullens. Stephenie Meyer reportedly wanted to keep the story short enough for her website, however as Bree’s character developed so did the length.

MY naMe is neil. i have Cerebral palsY and i’M also deaf. this Means i have diffiCultY walking and hearing.

because of this i don’t get out very much and when i do i have to rely on my mum to take me. just because i’m disabled it doesn’t mean i’m stuck in the house all the time. i do different kinds of things like deaf drama, horse riding and wheelchair basketball. i also enjoy wheelchair athletics and do the junior great scottish run 3k.

ReAL LIfe 34

nEil’S WheeLs

I go to a mainstream secondary school in Glasgow and I am one of the few disabled pupils in the school. I go round the school in a K-walker and occasionally in my wheelchair. I also use a sports wheelchair for active sports such as volleyball. My school has a swimming pool and I have a special chair to get in and out.

You may think that it is hard for me to do things, but since I

was born disabled I don’t really mind if I can’t do some things that other people can, such as football and other running sports. I try to enjoy life as much as possible. Sometimes though when I see kids my age going out on their own I wish I wasn’t disabled so I could do the same things as them and go out with them.

Recently I have started learning to play the drums at Creation studios for three reasons;1 – I wanted to see if I could play the drums,2 – I needed a second instrument for my Standard Grade music (I also play the piano), and 3 – I wanted to show people that even thoughI am deaf, I can play musical instruments.

Even though I’m disabled I’m also doing quite a lot of things in my life. I have tried many things that people without disabilities may not have had

the opportunity to do, such as bi-skiing, horse riding with the riding for the Disabled Glasgow Group, and abseiling in a wheelchair (even though it scared me witless!). Many of my friends are disabled but we try not to let it hold us back.

I have made a film with my deaf friends through solar Bear, the deaf youth theatre company. I have enjoyed several outward bound holidays with the National Deaf Children’s society and I am learning sign language with the West of scotland Deaf Children’s society.

My Mum started a charity called Neil’s Wheels which helps other physically disabled children get sports wheelchairs. These are easier to push around than normal chairs and let us play all sorts of sports. She also runs holiday camps for wheelchair and power chair users and is helping set up a power chair football club for some of my friends who use power chairs.

Just because I’m disabled, it doesn’t mean I can’t do things. If you look back in history, Ludwig Van Beethoven was deaf, but composed great music. In sports, Tanni Grey Thompson never let Spina Bifida hold her back, and she won lots of Olympic gold medals. People shouldn’t be judgemental about people with disabilities. Give them a chance to show their talents and you might be surprised what we can do!
