Defining revolution, Sardar Bhagat Singh had said,

‘Revolution is an invaluable gift to man from humanity.

A war should always be fought with new enthusiasm,

undeterred courage and firm resolution; only then you

will be able to establish a nation based on social val-

ues.’

The warm blood that flows, does not go waste

It brings the dawn of freedom one day

A small spark becomes a blaze

Sacrifice one day, ends up injustice

Respected Swamiji Maharaj says that – ‘It is better

to fight the terrorists once than to die of terrorism again

and again.’ Terrorists are turning their wicked inten-

tions into reality. Our law enforcers have claimed to

have taken strict measures but no results are seen.

Those who take the lives of innocents by spreading

terror and call themselves ‘zihadi’ are nothing but cow-

ards and puppets in the hands of some conspirators and

bring a bad reputation to humanity. They do not have

any ‘mission’ but, rather, they are being forced to give

shape to their supremo’s evil intentions. The time has

come to fight against such individuals who in the name

of religion are an insult to religion.

We are Indians. We have got our priceless indepen-

dence by sacrificing our beloved brethren. Now the time

has come to apply reins on these hatred-filled man-kill-

ing demons. Terrorists not only attack us but they also

attack our love and religion.

Honouring the families of the brave, young immortal

martyrs of the Mumbai terror attacks, Swami Ramdev

presented each with Rs 5 lakhs along with a letter of

tribute. A large memorial ceremony was oraganised in

Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, to give honour and respect

to the departed souls.

The Mumbai Police has made the very valid request

of conferring the prestigious ‘Ashoka Chakra’ award

to the 12 policemen who sacrificed their lives with cour-

age in the Mumbai terror attack.

Criticism and words of anger against terrorists ech-

oed all around the globe but with what result? Empty

words! The political parties and the government will

have to rethink policies against terrorism. The sacrifice

of our immortal martyrs will have to be honoured.

Swamiji is giving a new birth to lost Indian knowl-

edge

The President of Mauritius, Anirudh Jagannath, came

to India with his wife to visit ‘Patanjali Yogpeeth’. Dur-

ing his visit, he said that Swami Randev is giving a new

life to Indian knowledge that was considered to be lost.

He also said that India and Mauritius can help each

other in the research of yoga, Ayurveda, culture and

spirituality. He mentioned that he was overwhelmed by

Patanjali Yogpeeth.

Mahila Patanjali Yog Samiti established

From the ancient texts, it can be said with convic-

tion that women of the Vedic age were not dependent

on others for protection but they were self-protected.

The light of gentleness and beauty of women, the co-

builder of society, casts a glow on the entire society.

From whatever has been discussed about common cul-

ture in the traditional texts, it can be seen that women

of those days had both gentleness as well as capability.

A woman’s real beauty is not her body but her char-

acter. A woman is not a saleable commodity. She is

Sita, Savitri, Kaushalya, Jagadamba, Taravati, Gargi,

Madalasha, Mahalaskshmi, Meera and Lakshmibai. A

woman is the love of a mother, respect of a wife and

regard of a daughter. Do not make women a saleable

commodity and do not joke about a woman’s character.

This is an insult to mother. Today, the intelligent and

conscious mothers and sisters of our nation are again

and again made targets of nasty remarks. This should

be opposed with all our strength so that people are made

aware that Indian women are not characterless but are

the very symbols of purity.

Our women are also taking ahead Swami Ramdev’s

resolution of ‘Healthy India, Healthy World’. In Yoga

classes, almost 60 per cent of the participants are

women. Swami Ramdev is very serious about the

empowerment of women. To honour ancient traditions

and make women part of the biggest yoga revolution of

this age, he has established the ‘Mahila Patanjali Yog

Samiti’ on the death anniversary of Pandit Ram Prasad

Bismil and ensured the participation of women from

India and Nepal.

DIABETES GONE,

BRINGING SWEETNESS INTO MY LIFE

Highly respected Swami Ramdevji,

Namaste

I had been suffering from diabetes for the past 2

years. Allopathic medicine did not help me. I started

going to Yoga classes from 16 November 2008. For my

meals, I started taking vegetables boiled with dalia. I

am not eating anything else. My P.P. sugar came down

from 277 to 217, and in 17 days, on 3rd December 2008,

my P.P. sugar reached 132. Doctors had postponed a

surgery for hydrocele, asking me to first control my

sugar. On 4th December, my operation was performed.

Swamiji Maharaj! Yoga has given me a new life. In

the young age of 35 years, I was feeling helpless and

dependent. I feel as if I have been infused with a new

energy and been gifted with a new consciousness. My

life has become filled with sweetness.

Sincerely,

Vishambhar Dayal Nigam

RELIEF FROM HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE WITH

THE HELP OF PRANAYAM

Respected Swamiji,

Namaste!

I have been suffering from high blood pressure for

many years. A number of times, I have also lost con-

sciousness because of bleeding from the nose. Even

after allopathic treatment at a number of places, I did

not get any relief. I tried to do Pranayam by referring to

books but did it in the wrong method. However, when I

started doing pranayam under the instructions of a Yoga

teacher, my blood pressure became normal.

For many months now, whenever I have got it

checked, my blood pressure has remained normal. I am

completely ok even though my food habits are the same.

I also haven’t taken any medicine for the past

20 months. Now I have complete belief that

Yoga is the only solution to cure any disease

from the roots.

Sincerely

SUGAR IS NORMAL WITH YOGA-PRANAYAM

Respected Swamiji Maharaj!

Namaste!

I had been suffering from diabetes for many years.

In January 2005, when I got my sugar checked, it was

416. From September 2007, I learnt Pranayam and

started doing it with full faith and sincerity. After 6

months, when my sugar was checked, it had come down

to 102. Now I am completely alright. I am extremely

grateful to you.

STONES DISSOLVED WITH THE HELP OF

PRANAYAM AND MEDICINES

Respected Swami Ramdevji Maharaj,

Namaste!

I had been suffering from stomachache. On 14

March 2008, on doing an ultrasound it was reported

that my right kidney had a 13.1 mm stone. The doctor

said that for such a big stone, surgery was the only

answer. After this, I visited the Vaid at the Patanjali

Yogpeeth centre at Muradabad. He prescribed

Ayurvedic medicines such as Asmari Ras, Divya Vrik

Doshar Kwarth, Hajrul Yahud Bhasma and Vrik Doshar

Vati. Apart from regularly doing Pranayam, I also took

these medicines. On 10th November 2008, I again did

an ultrasound, the report of which was normal. Swamiji,

I offer my obeisance to you.

Sincerely,

GAVE ME A NEW LIFE

Respected Swamiji,

Namaste!

For 4 years now, I have been doing Pranayam but

only since the last one year, I have been doing it with

faith. In this one year, my allergy has been completely

cured. My mindset has also changed. With this visible

result, I have also gained happiness and enthusiasm.

Respected Swamiji,

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 9

-Dr. (Prof.) Ravindranath Mishra

Just as night follows day, similarly after youth comes

old age. Everyone knows that this truth is an unchange-

able rule of nature. Even then people do not like to hear

themselves being called old. The coming of old age is a

necessary physical nature. With the increase in age,

the physical and mental abilities of a person decreases.

People still want to remain young and look fresh for

longer and longer periods. With the help of a pure lifestyle

and balanced food habits, we can certainly keep off old

age for a long time and remain young for a longer pe-

riod.

Research on the deaths of centenarians reveals the

fact that such people have had nutritious and healthy

food throughout their life, have done exercise and physi-

cal activity, and had developed the habit to live without

worries. Those people who remain busy all the time, do

not allow laziness to come near them and are involved

in some task or the other throughout the day live a long

life. There is a definite timeframe for life and death.

This timeframe cannot be increased and decreased but

by making your work and leisure healthy and pure, you

can definitely make your life full of happiness.

If habits are not allowed to go astray while young,

then it is possible to keep old age at bay. About this,

psychologists have said that mental ill-habits are more

dangerous than physical ill-habits. That is the reason

why our opinions and mental waves should always be

permeated by clean, healthy and pure thoughts. Even

the scriptures say that human life should be at least up

to 110 years. According to available proof, very few

people live up to the age of 200 years. A man in Nor-

way has lived for 146 years and this fact has also been

recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Many

people in Japan live up to 100 years. There, such people

number over 2000. In Japan, people have a very busy

daily routine. That is why people there live long and

remain active. After Japan, it is China’s turn. There, a

person named Yung Bun passed away after living for

256 years. In the Soviet Union, a person lived for 168

years.

Keep your mind always fresh. Do not let it get tired.

It is only through mental tiredness that a person feels

physically tired. Someone has rightly said that a running

horse and a walking human do not become old. Mental

problems make a person’s body rotten. That is why one

should always try to keep happy. Behaviour should be

gentle and anger should be shed away. If you do not do

this, you will quickly be in the grasp of some ailment.

Compared to a person who talks a lot, a quiet person or

someone who talks less will live longer and will be suc-

cessful in keeping old age away by himself.

Adopt the right food habits

We get surrounded by many problems because of

our wrong food habits. Even in Charak Samhita, it has

been said that eating the wrong food at the wrong time

leads to diseases of the body. It is all the more neces-

sary to take care fo food habits in middle age as by

now, a person starts showing signs of blood pressure,

diabetes, arthritis and heart diseases.S

Morning breakfast

Breakfast is very important for everyone, be it

young, old, children or women. In the morning meal,

you can have dalia (bulgur wheat), sprouted pulses, fruits

or milk. Never have food prepared in the market. Such

a breakfast will cause lot of harm to the body. Always

keep in mind, that a person who does not do much physi-

cal labour should not have bread and butter in the morn-

ing as bread-butter increase fat in the body. Rather than

having fruit juice, it is better to eat whole fresh fruits by

chewing them. It is better if tea or coffee is not in-

cluded in the morning breakfast.

Food habits

It is very important to keep an eye on food habits

with increasing age.

• It is important at this age to have such foods that are

easy to chew and easy to digest. If food can be

easily chewed then the teeth do not have to work so

hard. Remember that teeth weaken at this age.

Many-a-times, teeth even start falling.

• At this age, nutritious food with less spice should be

taken.

• You should eat food that has less ghee, oil or butter.

• Eat fruits and vegetable that are fibrous. This pre

Page 10: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 10

vents constipation.

• Take food with less fat such as milk, curd and paneer.

Such food is easily digested and has also proved

beneficial in cases of high cholesterol.

• Foods should be of low calories as with increasing

age, the body does do a great amount of physical

activity.

• Juice, soup, etc should be had regularly.

• Have food that has iron and protein.

• Pay special attention the cleanliness of the body. If

this is not done then skin disease might spread in the

body.

• The most important thing at this age is to control the

weight.

• A lot of water should be drunk during the day.

• Take more food that required without thinking also

decreases the life-span.

Important tips for remaining young forever

• Do not take medicines quickly for small illnesses such

as coughs and colds. Take natural medicine to the

extent possible. Doing this may mean a longer pe-

riod for recovery but this builds up immunity in the

person.

• You should leave your bed at 5 am in the morning as

lying in bed for a long time gives rise to the feeling

of laziness.

• You should walk for 0 minutes in the fresh morning

air. This gives birth to new energy and fitness in the

body.

• You should have the habit of emptying your bowels

regularly in the morning. Doing this prevents the

accumulation of waste products in the stomach.

• Calcium in the teeth gets eroded with increasing age.

In such a case, special care should be taken of the

teeth. Along with cleaning the teeth in the morning,

develop the habit of cleaning your teeth at night too

before sleeping. Doing this removes the food par-

ticles trapped in between teeth.

• During the day, splash clean water on your eyes and

wash them a number of times. Include fruits and

vegetables that contain Vitamin a in your diet to keep

the eyesight proper.

• Keep away from mental stress as far as possible.

Diseases such as heart attacks and blood pressure

have a direct connection with mental stress. Always

keep happy and smiling. Doing this not only keeps

mental stress at bay but also prevents a number of

diseases.

• Food should always be eaten on time and should be

simple. Eat your food slowly after chewing well.

Remember, heavy food at this age harms rather than

benefiting the body.

• Food should be swallowed fast without chewing. If

this is done then the stomach has to the work of the

teeth. This has a bad effect on the digestive system.

• Do not let obesity control you. Remember that fat

people are more affected by blood pressure, diabe-

tes and heart diseases.

• To get rid of excess fat, eat food with fewer calo-

ries.

• Definitely fast for one day in a month. Doing this

keeps the digestive system fit.

• Drinking a glass of water with lemon juice in the

morning not only removes excess fat but also cleans

the stomach.

• Always keep space in your mind for youthful

thoughts and ideas. If your mind remains young, your

body too will remain young.

Useful Advice

• If you want to remain far away from old age then

spend some time in the sun for some time regularly.

The vitamin ‘D’ that is produced in our body in pres-

ence of sunlight reduces the fear of death. It is as-

sumed that the rays of the sun benefits health in a

number of ways, including prevention of arterial dis-

eases, cancer and asthma.

• Staying in the company of young people prevents

the showing of old age. This is why people with in-

creasing age should keep the company of young

folks.

• Sleep is also very important for good health. People

who are not able to sleep for 7-8 hours remain tired

the entire day. Because of lack of sleep, many-a-

times, people even fall sick and fall victim to many

diseases.

• Early to bed and early to rise should be your motto.

• Food should always be taken keeping time, climate

and location in time. Eating food at the wrong time

or eating food that is against the season has a bad

effect on health.

• Stay away from old age with the help of medicinal

herbs

• Add 5 nag Chuara, 12 nag Munnaka (sultanas), and

7 nag Makhana in 250gm milk and make kheer. Take

this to increase blood and muscle and keep the body

fit.

Page 11: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 11

• Blend 5nag raisins, sultanas, 3gm Brahmi, 8nag small

cardamom, 3gm musk melon seed kernels, 10nag

almond and gm Babul and drink it to calm down the

heat and make the body fit and strong.

• At night, before sleeping, eat as many sultanas

(deseeded) as you wish and drink water afterwards.

After some days, weakness will vanish, making the

body fit. (Taking more will lead to diarrhoea, so take

according your body’s capacity).

• Intake of ashwagandha according to requisite meth-

ods makes the body disease-free. Its use only dur-

ing the winters will also make a sick person strong.

It will get rid of old age and bring in new youth.

• Mix 10gm ashgandh churna with equal amounts of

misri and honey and 10gm cow’s ghee. Take this

morning and evening during the winter months for 4

months and even an old man will acquire happiness

of youth.

• Mix the fine churna of Ashwagandha roots with

fresh cow’s ghee, and in people with vata charac-

teristics add pure sesame seeds and in people with

kapha characteristics add warm water. Have this

for a year to remove weakness and destroy all

vyadhiyo. Old person, young and weak person will

also get strength from it.

• Grind the seeds of Gaurakhmundi and mix equal

amount of honey. Eat one fistful each day regularly

to get a lot of strength and people get a long life.

• Dry the entire plant of Gaurakhmundi in the shade.

Grind it when dry and add equal amount of misri and

have one spoon of this morning and evening with

milk to always keep young.

Keep yourself fit and fine with Yoga

Along with correct food and correct habits, you can

also help prevent old age by keeping yourself fit with

the help of Yoga. With the help of Dirgha Naukasan,

you can give strength to the heart. With Matsyasan,

Brajrasan and Mundukasan, you can successfully keep

old age at bay by making your body fit, healthy and

disease-free. If you can form the habit of doing Surya

Namaskar every morning at sun rise, then it will be

very beneficial for your body. Surya Namaskar is a

complete exercise. It makes all the parts of the body

strong and disease-free. With its help, one can keep the

stomach, intestines, lungs, heart, etc. healthy and dis-

ease-free. It invigorates the blood circulation through-

out the body. Surya Namaskar will make the muscles

of the hands, feet, thighs, calves, shoulders, etc. beauti-

ful and fit. We also get mental peace and strength from

Surya Namaskar along with fuel and energy.

Old age of the mind brings old age of the body. Do

not let the mind get tired. Let it always be filled with

happiness. When you wake up in the morning, your mind

should be filled with beautiful thoughts. When you sleep,

even your dreams should be beautiful. Experience the

pleasure of life with full energy and enthusiasm, only

then will you be successful at keeping old age away.

Always say sweet things. Along with this, develop the

habit of always being humble and happy. Always eat

only balanced diet. Never take stale or junk food from

outside. With such food you will fall victim to illness and

destroy your health. Never eat stale food. The biggest

harm to the body is caused by stale food.

Not only I, not only you, but the very nature is pro-

claiming: ‘Jeevem Sharad Shatam’

A Devotional Song

You are the ocean of love, I am thirsty for one drop of you

If you send me back, I will go away from this earth

This mad bird of the wounded mind is impatient to fly

Wings are soft, eyes are drowsy, I have to go across the ocean

Now only you can tell me from where I have lost the way

Life went dancing this way while the mind is still standing

there

Who knows where is the horizon, this is the problem

Just whisper in my ears and tell me which way I should come

A life full of hurry and increasing competition is

robbing people of peace of mind and a good night’s

sleep. This directly affects the mental health of people.

From children to youth to aged people – all are becom-

ing victims of mental illness. Mental stress, insomnia,

hysteria, depression, etc. complains are increasing. Ac-

cording to a survey, 15-20 per cent of the total popula-

tion is suffering from mental illnesses. Of these, 10-15

per cent people need special medical attention. Chil-

dren are also not left untouched by this. Of the children

in the age group of 5-15 years, 5-25 per cent are as-

sumed to be in the grasp of mental problems.

According to mental health expert, Prof. C.K.

Rastogi, problems such as mental stress, insomnia and

depression are on the increase these days. While stress

has become a common thing nowadays, consistent stress

can become the cause of many other diseases. According

to Dr. Rastogi, stress that stays for a long period of

time has a very harmful effect on the body. This leads

to persistent headache, sleeplessness and loss of appe-

tite. There is a gradual weight loss. Women may have

complaints of irregular periods. This stress can lead to

diseases such as peptic ulcer or build-up of acidity in

the stomach, asthma or high blood pressure, anxiety or

hysteria. Sometimes, to get relief from stress, people

start taking intoxicating substances and gradually be-

come addicted to them and it becomes very difficult to

let go of these.

With regard to depression, Dr. Rastogi says this can

affect both males and females of any age, however it is

mainly seen after 40-45 years of age. Mental stress

arising out of various reasons may be the cause for

this. The patient, without any reason, feels very sad,

helpless, and lonely. Along with this, he shows symp-

toms such as headache, dizziness, loss of appetite and

weakness. There are also instances when people af-

fected by this have attempted to commit suicide. Giving

information on another disease, hysteria, Dr Rastogi

says this mainly occurs in women and erupts suddenly

during time of mental stress. The patient may have prob-

lem in speaking or swallowing. After some time, the

patient may stop seeing with her eyes or may stop hear-

ing with her ears. Breathing becomes rapid and the body

starts shivering. She starts behaving as if possessed by

ghosts or spirits. As no illness shows when the patient

is examined, many-a-times people feel that she is

merely acting but this is not so. About protection from

mental stress, Dr Rastogi said that to whatever extent

it is possible, one should avoid the causes that lead to

mental stress. It is to be mentioned that exercise, yoga

and meditation have been found to be most helpful in

protecting oneself from mental stress.

Every seventh male and every fourth female is a

victim to depression. This disease has grown because

of mental stress. Every year, on 10th October, World

Mental Health day is celebrated. This year, the World

Health Organization has given the slogan of ‘There is

no health without mental health’. Psychiatrist Dr. Vipul

Singh says that two things should be kept in mind for

mental health. First is balance between work and rest,

and the second is one should always find time to do

something that gives pleasure or something that one has

an interest in.

World Health Organization is urging a lot of atten-

tion to be given to mental health as this problem is rap-

idly increasing. According to estimates, by 2020, this

will be the main disease after heart disease. He said

that in a day of 24 hours, 7-8 hours of sleep is very

necessary. Along with this, there should be balanced

diet and regular exercise. It is seen that those people

who do not get their proper quota of sleep get irritated

all the time. One should definitely take out time to do

something of interest so that one feels happy. Even af-

ter all these precautions if someone is still affected by

mental problems, then they should consult a doctor. The

problem of depression is fast increasing.

The Pranayam package being promoted by Swami

Ramdev is proving to be most beneficial. Now people

have started to cure diseases with the help of Yoga

Diarrhoea is an illness of the stomach. In common

language, it is also known as dysentery. In this illness,

the patient had repeated excretion of thin bowels, with

which he feels very weak. Both old and young have

been affected by this illness in their life. When the food

we eat comes out of the body through the anal cavity

within just 5-6 hours, this condition is known as diar-

rhoea. In this illness, the food acceptance ability of the

intestines decreases. Along with this, there is shrinkage

in the intestines.

Diarrhoea is of many kinds such as Vatik diarrhoea,

Kaphaj diarrhoea, Shokaj diarrhoea, Shannipataj diar-

rhoea, Paitik (bilious) diarrhoea, dysentery (Amatisar),

Ajirnajanya (dyspepsia) diarrhoea, Severe diarrhoea or

feverish diarrhoea (Jwaratisar), blood diarrhoea.

In Vatik diarrhoea, the stool contains foam, uneven

and comes out of the body in very small quantity with

pain and sound through the anal cavity. In Kapha diar-

rhoea, the patient excretes white stools with very bad

odour and mucous. In Shokaj (distress) diarrhoea, the

patient excretes red blood, the colour of Gunjaphal, with

stools or without stools. In Shannipataj (delirium) diar-

rhoea, the patient excretes stools similar to the water

we get after washing from pork. In bilious diarrhoea,

the patient feels thirsty all the time, feels faint repeat-

edly and he excretes yellow and a little blood-coloured

stools. In dysentery, the patient excretes stools every

few minutes. In dyspeptic diarrhoea, the patient’s stools

are a little green in colour and contain foam. The skin

around the anus becomes reddish. In feverish diarrhoea,

the patient has a vomiting tendency. In the beginning,

the stools are green and oily but soon they turn white

and thin. In this diarrhoea, the patient has fever which

goes up to 102-103o. In blood dysentery, the patient

excretes yellow stools. Sometimes, blood also comes

out.

Apart from the types of diarrhoea mentioned, there

In common language, it is also known as dysentery. In this illness, the patient had re-

peated excretion of thin bowels, with which he feels very weak. Both old and young have

been affected by this illness in their life. When the food, we eat comes out of the body

through the anal cavity within just 5-6 hours, this condition is known as diarrhoea.

are many other reasons why diarrhoea occurs. In old

age, the digestive capacity of the intestines decreases

and hence in this age, even a little carelessness in eat-

ing habits can lead to diarrhoea or constipation. In this

form of diarrhoea, even though the patient excretes fre-

quently, he does not feel any particular physical dis-

comfort. Hyperthyroidism, dropsy, high consumption of

tobacco and intake of stale meat also causes diarrhoea

in a person. Diarrhoea may also occur because of liver

problems. Cancer in the intestines, warts, anal fistula,

and ulcer in the intestines may also be the reason for

diarrhoea. A person may also be affected by long-last-

ing diarrhoea because of Pyeria.

Symptoms

Along with thin stools, a patient will feel thirsty. His

mouth will continuously feel dry. The body temperature

falls. The quantity of urine also falls. This condition of

the patient is considered to be serious. Along with loose

faeces, the patient also vomits sometimes. There is a

white deposition on the patient’s tongue. There is pain

and heat in the stomach. Because of stools rotting in

the stomach, the patient also has the problem of flatu-

lence. His appetite decreases. The patient has cramps

in his stomach. The patient excretes stools again and

again and there is a rumbling in the stomach. The body

becomes weak and yellowish.

Reasons

When heavy food, large quantity of food without

chewing well, fried and oily food, alcohol, polluted wa-

ter, stale or rotten food get accumulated and rots in the

stomach, then it causes harm to the stomach. In this

situation, nature removes the accumulated rot through

the big intestine. Shrinkage occurs because of weather

change, drinking polluted water during monsoon, feel-

ing cold, etc. Then the mucous membrane of the intes

tine comes out in the form of white glutinous matter

in diarrhoea. This condition is called Sangrahani, a

chronic disorder of the bowels. Sometimes, the bowels

rot inside the intestine because of constipation. Even

then this excreta comes out of the body in the form of

diarrhoea. Often, diarrhoea is stopped before time with

the help of opium-containing and other medicine and in

these cases the condition of the patient becomes very

bad. In this situation, nature once again causes diar-

rhoea in the patient. In this way the rotten substance

present inside the body come out. A number of times,

various bacteria cause diarrhoea in a person. When the

intestines are infected by germs such as Giardia, chol-

era virus, Staphylococci, salmonella, amoeba, etc., there

may be attacks of diarrhoea. In these types of diar-

rhoea, there may be pain in the stomach.

Treatment

If diarrhoea is caused by dyspepsia, indigestion or

intestinal problems, then the intestines must be given

complete rest and the dyspepsia must be cured. It is

mainly because of indigestion that diarrhoea occurs in

the body. Diarrhoea may be successfully cured with

the help of medicinal herbs.

- Acharya Satyanand ‘Naistik’

A businessman had his own shop. He expanded his

business with a lot of hard work. He used to make a

large profit. The businessman had only one son but he

was extremely lazy, weak and of no use. Even after

repeated explanations by the businessman, his son would

not work. The businessman was worried as to how his

son would manage the business. Finally, he got an idea.

The businessman said to his son – “Son, today you

get me something that you have earned and only then

you will get food to eat, otherwise not.” The business-

man had found a brilliant way of mending his son. The

boy got worried after hearing his father’s words and

thought what to do now. His mother gave him one ru-

pee out of compassion. In the evening when the busi-

nessman asked him for the day’s earnings, the boy

handed over the one rupee. In the olden days, even one

rupee had a lot of value. But the busi-

nessman was keeping a watch of

his son’s activities. He knew ev-

erything. He said, “Go and drop

this in the nearby well.” The

boy ran and threw the coin in

the nearby well. He thought

that the trouble is over.

The next day, businessman

again called his son and said,

“Go and earn something and

only then you will get food to

eat.” The boy thought again the same problem! He was

lazy, he did not want to work. That day he went to his

elder sister and started crying for one rupee. His sister

took pity on her brother and gave him one rupee. The

boy’s problem was solved. In the evening the business-

man asked for the day’s earning. He again handed over

one rupee. The businessman was wise and knew where

this money came from. Yesterday he had got the money

from his mother but today his mother was sent to her

maternal home. Today he must have got it from his sis-

ter. The businessman ordered, “Go and throw this money

in the nearby well.” The boy ran out speedily and threw

the money. He then got his food. However, the busi-

nessman sent his daughter to her in-law’s place.

The Third day, the businessman again called his son

and said, “Go and bring your earning again.” The son

was very worried today. Today his mother and sister

were not at home and who will listen to him? His

neighbours knew he was good-for-nothing. When there

was no hope of getting money from anywhere, he went

to the market in search of some work. With a lot of

effort, he got one job. The trader said that 25 paise will

be given for the day’s work. The boy agreed. The en-

tire day he carried sacks on his back. His back was

ached. He could not even stand straight. He was over-

whelmed with tiredness. He did not even have the

strength to walk. After his hard and long work, he

reached home with 25 paise. The businessman read

something new on his son’s face. He asked

for the day’s earning. The boy handed over

25 paise. The businessman was quite wise.

Immediately he said, ‘Go and drop this

boy become very angry in the

nearby well.” On hearing this, the

and he said, “I have almost bro-

ken my back for this 25 paise

and am hardly able to walk.

Now you are asking me to

throw this money in the well?”

The businessman said,

“Yesterday you had thrown

one rupee in the well. Today

it is just 25 paise.”

The boy said, “Father, this 25 paise is far more

valuable than one rupee. Now I have realised that to

throw one rupee which was not earned by me was very

easy whereas I am finding it very hard to throw even

25 paise that I have earned with hard work.”

The businessman patted his son’s back. He hugged

him close and handed over the keys of his business to

him saying, “Today you have tasted the fruit of labour,

which is sweet. Hard work is the key to success. Now

you will be able to run this business. This is the lesson I

wanted to teach you.”

Moral: The answer to man’s success lies in hard

work. The person who does not work hard gets left

behind. The life of an idle person is wasted.

- Vaidya Ajay Magan

Very few people know what blood pressure is – the

pressure exerted on the walls of the blood vessels by blood

during circulation after being pumped out by the heart is known

as blood pressure. Normally, the pressure in arteries is known as

blood pressure. These are the vessels that carry blood away from the

heart to the other parts of the body.

What is high blood pressure?

If blood exerts more than normal pressure on the walls of the arteries over a

period of time, it is known as high blood pressure. It is also known as hypertension.

Reasons of high blood pressure

In a number of people, no one reason is seen for high blood pressure. This is called

primary blood pressure. In some people, blood pressure occurs because of the preva-

lence of some other disease. When the reason is known, it is known as secondary high

blood pressure.

Dangers of high blood pressure

High blood pressure is a serious condition. It can lead to heart attack, brain

haemorrhage, kidney failure and a number of other diseases.

Measuring Blood Pressure

• Do not have coffee or cigarettes for 30 minutes before measuring the blood pres-

sure.

• For the first five minutes, sit at ease. Visit the bathroom before taking the measure-

ment. The pressure of urine also affects the reading.

What is low blood pressure?

If the pressure exerted by blood on the blood vessels is lower than the required

pressure, it is known as low blood pressure. People who have low blood pressure have

less chance of heart attacks and kidney failure.

Low blood pressure may be present even in sportspersons who regularly exercise,

people who maintain the correct weight and in people who do not smoke. It is said that

till the time, the symptoms of low blood pressure do not emerge or no damage is done to

any organ of the body, there is no danger from low blood pressure. It is only when the

blood pressure falls extremely low that it becomes dangerous.

When the blood pressure becomes dangerously low, then the requisite amount of

oxygen and nutrients does not reach the vital organs of the body such as brain, heart and

kidney and these organs are not able to function properly. In a situation like this, because

of low blood pressure, these organs are damaged permanently.

Symptoms

• Lightness of body and sleeplessness are symptoms of low blood pressure.

• When blood pressure falls very low, a person might also become unconscious.

• Chest pain, difficulty in breathing, irregular heart beat, fever (over 101), headache,

stiff neck, cough, vomiting, fatigue, fainting, etc.

Page 18: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 18

Reasons

Low blood pressure can occur to anyone but in

certain cases, it can also become dangerous and

serious. Blood pressure becomes low in the early days

of pregnancy in expecting mothers. The medicines that

control high blood pressure also lower blood pressure.

Apart from these, heart disease, dehydration and lack

of proper nutritious diet may also cause low blood pres-

sure.

Why does blood pressure fluctuate between high

and low?

Tension is the biggest influence on the blood pres-

sure. If children have the tension of studies, then adults

have the tension of striking a balance between home

and the workplace. In other words, no person is free

from tension. This is the reason why blood pressure

has become a common thing among the common popu-

lace.

What is high or low B.P.?

High blood pressure occurs when the blood pumped

out by the heart goes out very fast, exerting great pres-

sure on the walls of the arteries while the exact oppo-

site occurs in low blood pressure, that is the blood

pumped out by the heart goes out very slowly through

the arteries.

What to do

• If you are suffering from high blood pressure then

reduce the intake of salt.

• If you are suffering from low blood pressure then

increase the intake of salt.

• Exercise regularly. This regulates blood pressure.

Just take care that if there is any difficulty in breath-

ing or any pain in the chest, reduce the rate of exer-

cise.

• Take balanced and nutritious diet.

• Low blood pressure patients should take nutritious

food and correct their life style.

• Try to finish your work in time to avoid work-related

stress.

• Take adequate food and eat only those foods which

have low quantity of protein.

• Vegetarian food is the best food. To remove toxic

substances from the body, eat a lot of fresh fruits

and vegetables instead of traditional foodstuff.

• Kidney plays an important role in controlling blood

pressure. Always keep kidneys healthy. For this,

physical exercise is important.

• To get relief from blood pressure with the help of

natural methods, patients should take a fruit diet for

at least one week. In this, oranges, apples, pears,

mango, guava, pineapple, watermelon, etc. are quite

useful. These should be taken three times a day with

a gap of five hours in between. Do not take banana

or jackfruit. Milk should be taken only after a week.

It should be fresh and just boiled once.

• Vegetables are very helpful for high blood pressure

patients. They should be eaten raw. If they have to

be cooked, take care that their natural juices do not

burn out.

• Cucumber, carrot, tomato, onion, radish, cabbage,

spinach, etc. should be eaten raw.

• Garlic is recognized to be a natural cure. Eating gar-

lic regularly regularizes blood pressure and tension

because it has the medicinal property of reducing

the shrinkage of fine capillaries. Apart from giving

relief in nausea, unconsciousness, breathlessness, it

also gives relief in gas, and improves the working of

the heart by reducing the pulse. If 2-3 cloves of

garlic are consumed everyday then it has a profound

effect on blood pressure.

• The intake of amla (gooseberry) is also helpful in

blood pressure. Take one teaspoon of amla juice with

equal amount of honey everyday in the morning.

• Lemon also normalizes high blood pressure. The

vitamin ‘C’ present in it prevents weakness in the

fine capillaries.

• Eat the seeds of watermelon. The seeds of water-

melon have a substance that helps in enlarging the

blood vessels. When the blood vessels become

enlarged, the pressure automatically lowers.

• Food rich in potassium and calcium also controls high

blood pressure. Potassium is present in fruits and

vegetables and calcium is found mainly in milk and

milk products.

• Walking is the best exercise for high blood pressure.

It reduces tension. Muscles are strengthened and

blood circulation improves.

• When blood pressure starts reducing, for greater

exercise, take the help of cycling and jogging. Yoga

is also helpful.

• There should be regular check-up of blood pressure.

This gives an update of the situation.

• Equal amounts of onion juice and honey should be

mixed and 10 gm should be taken once daily as an

Page 19: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

effective cure for blood pressure. Onion juice re-

duces cholesterol levels in the blood thus reducing

the chance of heart attacks. Onion is a tonic for the

nervous system, purifies blood, helps in digestion,

improves the working of the heart and prevents in-

somnia. Honey has a soothing effect on the body

and reduces the excitement in the blood vessels, thus

reducing high blood pressure. With honey the heart

becomes strong and everlasting.

• Grind the kernel of watermelon seeds and white

khus-khus (poppy seeds) separately. Mix equal

weights of each and keep aside. Take 3 gm every

morning on empty stomach with water. This reduces

blood pressure and improves sleep at night. Head-

ache also reduces. Take for 3-4 weeks as required.

• Take 3gm of fenugreek seed powder with water early

morning and evening on empty stomach for 10-15

days to reduce high blood pressure. This also helps

in diabetes.

• After food, chew 1-2 peeled cloves of garlic raw

along with water or insert the garlic cloves in 1-2

deseeded sultanas (munakka) and have it. Fresh

cloves of garlic help in normalizing blood pressure.

• Grind equal quantities of wheat and gram. Make rotis

of the flour with wheat bran and eat them. Improve-

ment will be seen in high blood pressure within 1-2

days.

• Keep water in a copper tumbler at night and drink

this in the morning to lower blood pressure and helps

in controlling it.

• Mix four tulsi leaves, two neem leaves along with 2-

4 spoons of water for 5-7 days every morning on

empty stomach to help in high blood pressure.

• Eat tree-ripened papaya every morning for one month

and do not eat anything for two hours after this. This

helps in high blood pressure.

Foods to avoid in high blood pressure

High blood pressure patients should avoid the fol-

lowing: heavy food made with milk and butter, etc., fried

food, alcohol, smoking, clarified butter (ghee), salt, brinjal,

potato, unripe banana, jackfruit, pulses, refined flour,

sweets, jaggery, oil, sour food, chilli and spices, polished

rice, white refined sugar, tea, coffee, mutton, fish and

intoxicating substances.

Food to eat in high blood pressure

• Fruits such as lemon, papaya, amla, sweet lime

(mausambi), apple, water melon, etc. are helpful.

• Cholai leaves, spinach, garlic, gourds, onion, carrot,

tomato, carrot juice, bathua, etc. are beneficial.

• Eat stale wheat rotis soaked in milk in the morning.

Take curd in which glucose has been mixed.

• Chew every morsel well. Do not drink water while

eating.

• Walk on bare feet for 5-6 km or on green grass for

10-15 minutes for benefit.

• Always be happy – meditate for peace of mind.

• It has also been found that fasting for a day once

every week or fortnight, e.g. in the ekadashi of

suklpaksh, is beneficial.

• For immediate relief in high blood pressure, squeeze

half a lemon in 10 gm water and take this once or

twice with a two hours gap to get instant relief.

Treatment for low blood pressure

• Soak 32 raisins in 150 gm of water in a ceramic

bowl. After twelve hours, eat the raisins one by one,

chewing well to help in low blood pressure. For con-

tinued relief, continue for 32 days. Doing this for

month will remove the disease from the body. Being

full of iron, copper and being an alkaline substance,

it cleanses the blood and body.

• If unconsciousness occurs because of low blood

pressure of heart weakness, take two spoons of juice

of green amla mixed with equal quantity of honey

repeatedly. This helps in regaining consciousness and

strengthens the heart.

• Intake of almonds is very helpful in low blood pres-

sure. Soak seven almonds every night and in the

morning, grind it well and drink it with milk.

• For immediate relief in low blood pressure, stop talking

and sleep quietly, lying on the left side. Sleep will

provide relief.

• Low blood pressure patients should avoid hard labour

and they should practice Yoga Nidra once every-

day. This removes tension and the body relaxes, pro-

viding deep sleep.

• Low blood pressure occurs mainly because of ir-

regularities in sleep and food. Inadequate intake of

nutritious food and hard labour throughout the day

leads to low blood pressure.

• While working, if you feel very tired or nauseous or

if you see darkness while trying to stand up after

sitting for a while, take rest. Food and sleep is the

best medicine for low blood pressure.

“Eyes are our windows to the world, without eyes

the world is dark” – there are countless sayings like

this. Almost 85% of the knowledge that we gain during

our life is because of our eyes. Eyes are the biggest gift

to mankind. Similar to a camera, the eye is protected by

the bony socket and lashes, tears, eyelids are all present

for its protection as well as beauty. Our eyes which can

understand 36000 signals in an hour, are made up of 20

lakh parts. If the environment is 100% pollution free

than even by candle light, an eye can see up to a great

distance.

Out of the total 12 sensory nerves connected to the

eyes, 6 are connected only to the eye. But when it comes

to eye donation, people for no reason close their eyes.

Eye donation does not take place while a person is liv-

ing and only carried out after a person is dead. While

living only an oath is taken that after death, the person’s

eyes should be donated. Even so the reality is some-

thing else. When there is a death in the neighboirhood

and you raise the issue of eye donation, 98% negates

the proposal whereas everyone knows that just the body

is lying here. The soul has departed and the body is only

here for some more time before it is cremated or bur-

ied. Why is there such hesitation for eye donation? Some

people say that if eyes are taken out in this birth, then in

the next birth one will be born blind. Some others say

that after taking out the eyes the dead body becomes

ugly. Yet others say that our religion does not allow eye

donation. There is no end to the number of reasons given

by people. These very people donate clothes, wealth,

cows and what not during all major festivals and occa-

sions but when it comes to eye donation, everyone turn

a blind eye.

us=ke~ iz/kue~ losZfUnz;k.kke~Just as the Peepal among trees, Ganga among riv-

ers, the eye is considered to be the principal organ

amongst all organs of the body. Eyes that gift us the

knowledge of reality. Does not it then become our duty

to protect our eyes as invaluable jewels and instead of

burning or burying them after death, isn’t it better to

give two blind people a chance to see the world?

On the pyre it will turn into ash

In the grave it turn into soil

Donate your eyes

Let light enter two lives

According to the Health Ministry, Government of

India, approximately 20 lakh people in India are blind

due to damaged cornea and 30,000 to 40,000 people

turn victim each year because of corneal blindness.

According to the Eye Bank Association of India,

there are 543 eyes banks in India, which are able to

collect only 30,000 cornea each year, that is there are

only about 15,000 cornea donors while there are 80-90

lakh deaths each year.

Of this, only 15,000 are eye donors, that is 2%. Sri

Lanka, which is a very small country with a population

about the size of Delhi or Haryana donates eyes to 135

other countries. The Indian government’s Indian Air-

lines also gives free cargo service for this. Corneas can

be transported from one place to another.

Of the eye donations in India, 42% is from South

India, 38% is from West India and only 20% eyes come

from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir,

Rajasthan, U.P., Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and North East

India.

It is often seen that despite being blind, people are

able to understand and recognize things. In explanation

it has been said that blind people see things with their

sixth sense or with their inner eyes. Now even scien-

tists have agreed that the blind can see. This can be

said to be ‘blind sight’.

It is because of damage to the visual cortex that

people cease to see. Visual cortex allows sight in people.

The visual cortex can be damaged by natural or exter-

nal injury or strokes, etc. According to research, blind

people can ‘see’ or recognize things with the help of

blind sight. It is that power which allows a blind person

to feel a thing with his or her senses without actually

seeing it.

Respected Swami Ramdevji Maharaj is giving a lot

of importance to blood donation and eye donation. Im-

portant and beautiful work is being carried out in this

regard in Patanjali Yogpeeth’s modern and Ayurvedic

optic and research department.

A person’s story is actually the story of his mind. This is what gives birth to tranquility in disturbance anddisturbance in tranquility, peace in struggle and struggle

in peace. This is the biggest problem and also, finally, the solution to all problems. An entire branch of knowl-edge has come up for its research, which we know bythe name of psychology. Despite this, what is thenature of the mind? There is still no Common opinion asto a final answer to this question. Despite the sages of

India differentiating the sense and life energies gradu-ally in the form of food-giving and life-giving cells, theyhave also identified the intelligent mind in the body andits activities as mental cells. This is the connecting pointbetween the internal man and the outer world. This isthe connection as well as the divider between the food-

giving and life-giving cells or the science-based and plea-sure-based worlds. It has neither length, nor breadthand nor any thickness. We can call it the window to theknowledge gathered over time. The entire informationof the entire Universe sent by the sense organs is syn-thesized here and it is here that the experiences of the

soul and intellect is analyzed and expressed externally. It is here that the food-giving and life-giving cells areregulated. This is the soul of the life-giving cells. Alongwith wisdom, intellect and arrogance, mind is an equalparticipant and member of the innermost experiences. If we go deep into the issue, we will find that all these

are nothing but the handiwork of the mind that we callby different names by the various angles from whichthey are viewed.

The dividing line between the various internal mem-bers is very thin. Along with the mind, we also have theintellect centre. The main source for its imagination is

wisdom. We can call wisdom the superior side of mindor the enlightened area of the mind. When we are inthe state of reasoning (which can be said to be the stateof pros and cons), then we are at the level of the mindor within the area of the mind. Wisdom emerges fromhere. From the various aspects of pros and cons that

emerge during the state of reasoning, wisdom selectsone and a decision takes birth. On one hand, the work-ings of the mind push man towards bondage, on theother hand the workings of wisdom helps him to be-come free. Whether the decision taken by wisdom isright or wrong depends on the level of the intellect and

arrogance. The highest state of intellect is never foundin the tamasik form of arrogance. Inferior level of arro-gance and inferior state of intellect obstructs the capa-

bility of wisdom of taking the correct decision. The jobof choosing one between the struggle of determinationand non-determination, is very difficult when taken atthe level of understanding, but is very easy and naturalwhen looked at from the level of technicalities. Wis-dom, intellect and arrogance are nothing but different

parts of the mind.Sage Patanjali always used the word ‘intellect’ to

denote ‘mind’. Swami Atmanand Saraswati, a profoundthinker who kept a great pace in ‘yoga’, in his volume‘Shivsankalp and Vedic Manovigyan’, has given detaileddescription of the various divisions of the mind with their

composition and functions. According to Swamiji, themind works at five levels, namely: Devman, Yakshman,Pragyanman, Chetahman and Ghritiman. Even in this,Gritiman is divided into Pratyagbhan mind, Vishwabhanmind, and Vashikaran mind. In these, Devman takesthe help of the godly (dev) senses of knowledge to gather

all the information and passes on the message to thesoul. Yakshman is the head of the work organs. By regu-lating the work organs and translating the internal mes-sages into work through them is what this mind does.Pragyanman receives the information of the sense or-gans from the Devman and takes a decision as to what

has to be done. It then instructs Yakshman to carry thisout through the work organs accordingly. At this level, the active part of the mind is in reality the wisdom. Anaccount of the culture and habits that is gained by theintellect from our work and feelings is kept by theChetasman. The fifth, Gritaman is at three levels for

true knowledge, global view, and progress. What is mind? Even though it is difficult to com-

pletely understand it, we can understand better by thework done by various on how and what the mind does.An interesting bit of information given by Sage Gautamis that the mind cannot give rise to two kinds of knowl-

edge at the same time. That is, when the mind is takingin the form of the object, it cannot take in its smell andtaste at that instant. However, all these take place atsuch small intervals of time that we cannot get to knowwhere one task ended and the other begun.

The ability of the mind to completely involve itself in

-Acharya Balkrishna

Page 22: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 22

the good and progress of the man depends on itshealth. A sick mind is the biggest obstacle to progress, peace and happiness. Sage Patanjali has analyzed the

various obstacles that arise in the mind in the form ofinsanity, depression, stress, idiocy, fear and illusion. Thestudy ‘Chitta bhumi - Chitta vridhi’, where intellect isdivided into five segments, is in itself a great work.

In the view of the Yog scholars, our intellect canexist at five levels, namely: Kshipt, Mudh, Vishipt, Ekagra

and Niradh. When the intellect, reaching the state ofsorrow and perplexity, when we feel that we are at aloss, then we are at the ‘Kshipt’ level of the intellect.Because the intellect is mainly under the influence ofRajas gunah at the ‘Kshipt’ level, it is very restless andalways look outward. Such an intellect uselessly keeps

wandering about. The state of the intellect that occursduring physical or mental injury or during an illness iscalled ‘Mudh’ state. This state of intellect is often in thegrasp of hatred, passion, etc. In reality, Mudh state comesabout when the mind is clouded by Tamas gunah. Inthis state, there is no sense of responsibility, and one

gets angry at small things frequently and thus mind getsinvolved in useless things rather than focusing on theactual task. During the worldly events of benefit-harm,dignity-insult, defect-victory, happiness-sorrow, birth-death, etc., the intellect that keeps control is at the levelof the Vikshipt. The concentrating of the mind on any

one topic is done at the level of the Ekagra state. Simi-larly, the level at which the meditative path is changedis called Niradh. Amongst these, the first three are notimportant for the yoga practitioners. However, whenreaching the third state of the intellect, Vikshipt, possi-bilities of yoga arises. Actually for yogic meditation, only

Ekagra and Niradh levels are required. In the state ofEkagra, the meditator meditates with the help of yogaand tries to fix an object in the intellect. In the state ofEkagra, when the mind is constantly wandering or triesto rise up, then it automatically enters the state of Niradh. This is the highest point of purity and reality. It is at this

level that the meditator gets into Samadhi and experi-ences ecstasy. Staying continuously at this level, thedevotee goes into various aspects of Samadhi. It is atthis stage that the wise meditator reaches the highestpoint of Samadhi and becomes free.

Along with the states of intellect, Sage Patanjali has

unprecedented understanding of the functions of theintellect. Sage Patanjali divides all the various businessesof the intellect into five classes – Praman Vritti, ViparyaVritti, Vikalp Vritti, Nidra Vritti and Smriti Vritti. Ac-cording to sage Patanjali, these are happiness-giving aswell as sorrow-giving. If we take an overview of the

worldly businesses as opposed to the mental businesses, then we will surprisingly find that here is no mental or

worldly business that does not fall within these fiveclasses. The fish-like intellect (mind) keeps jumping upand down in these businesses and keeps the person

constantly on his toes. These businesses get mixed withthe sensual pleasures and get converted into desires. This converts good work into sin. However, if these arecalmed down and influenced by the feelings of the soul, then we get to see the happy outcome. When there isconcord among these businesses, which is also the start-

ing point of the state ekagra, then it does not let theintellect to be pushed into despair or worry by the upsand downs of the environment and the chaos.

In the words of Dr Radhakrishna – ‘We cannotchange the wheel of events in the world, or the ups anddowns that occur in society, according to our own wish.

However, we can develop so much will power withinus that they do not have any effect on us and they donot move us away from our path.’

Our entire worldly and mental business gets carriedout with the help of these five ‘Vrittis’, hence it is veryimportant that they are a fact, true and regulated. The

reality and truth of these businesses in a man is the bestmessage for rise. On the other hand, it is also true thatonly facts determine the truth. This was very importantfor sage Patanjali. This is also the reason why the firstthree classes of businesses include proof or fact(Praman vitti), change or opposition (viparya vitti) and

uncertainty (Vikalpa vitti). These three give stress onthe factual aspect of knowledge and the truth. It is onlyproven knowledge that is the true knowledge. Theseare later called ‘Pratyasha’ or visible truth or that whichis seen by the eyes, ‘Anuman’ or assumption and ‘SabdPraman’ or hearsay or that which is heard with the

ears. This has been discussed seriously in Indian phi-losophy scholar, Gautam’s Philosophy of justice. Wedifferentiate the general knowledge that we get fromour senses into the first category, that is ‘Prataksya’.The knowledge that had come to us through our eyesand direct senses can now be used by us to make an

assumption. The assumptions made by earlier sages andthe vedic texts are considered are now placed in thecategory of ‘Sabd Praman’. An assumption made onthe basis of the form or shape of the object goes againstthe truth of that very object. This false assumption withregard to objects was regarded as ‘viparya’ by Patanjali.

In reality, it is very important that facts should be usedwithout any illusion. When facts or proofs are touchedby bias and illusion then they will only be fit for ‘viparya’category. The first two categories of facts and changeare thus dependent on the object, however, the thirdvritti, Vikalpa, gives the essence of being without any

objects. To imagine and give shape to an object or topicin your intellect after hearing about it with your ears is

Page 23: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 23

possible only with the help of this vritti. The first three businesses of the intellect, namely

Praman, Viparya and Vikalpa are connected with the

alert or awakened state of man, whereas all the busi-nesses that occurred in the dream and sleeping stateswere categorized by sage Patanjali into ‘nidra’ vritti. The happy or evil dreams that we go through in oursleep state and the desire-filled and greed-filled ups anddowns we experience during our dreams and sleep are

beneficial or harmful to using the form of nidra vritti. The dream state of man is filled with unanswered ques-tion. Apart from saying that our dream state reflectsthe unquenched or subdued desires of the awakenedstate, the flings that we have absorbed and the desiresof various previous births, I am not in a position to say

anything more. The function of the intellect that col-lects and preserves all the topics that have been learnt, experienced or felt in the past is identified by Patanjalias the fifth class of function called ‘Smriti’ or memory. In reality, this vritti is an extremely calm function and atthe same time is also very excitable. This can be the

cause of jealousy and also of empathy. While memo-ries with a resolution can encourage co-existence, re-petitive memories can lead to oppression.

Sage Patanjali has said that all these functions haveboth happy and sad aspects. Only the extremely care-ful vigilance of these can determine the existence of

distressed and joyous conditions. I appeal to the peopledesirous of happiness and exaltation should control theeffect of the functions of the intellect with the help ofyoga. Acharya has also advised the devotees to be care-ful from the confusing elements that hinder your mis-sion. There are nine such internal perplexing elements,

namely, disease, uncertainty, error, laziness, want of

peace, delusion. Apart from these, there are four kinds

of sub-elements of obstruction which the devotee has

to face along with the main elements of obstruction.

These are: sorrow, wickedness, physical body, inhaling

and exhaling.

Studying the elements that influence the working of

the mind, sage Patanjali has given another piece of in-

teresting information about the form of the five classes.

The following five elements have an important role to

play in building obstacles in the way of the functions of

the intellect: false knowledge, wrong memory, anger,

hatred and attachment. While trying to gather the intel-

lect or mind, these five hindrances which stick to it are

very difficult to remove. They are always at work try-

ing to make the mind blunt and the intellect dirty. In this

regard, there is another important piece of information

available in yoga texts, and that is the first obstacle,

false knowledge, is the father of the remaining four and

nourishes them. False memory, anger, hatred and at-

tachment have the seed of false knowledge in them

and we can also call them the branches or sub-branches

of false knowledge. In Indian Philosophy, it is this false

knowledge that is considered to be the cause of bond-

age and the hindrance to salvation. In your root charac-

ter, false knowledge is the father of all that which is

false or not in the right place. False memory is of Tamas

nature and gives rise to lower level of arrogance. When

the sharp desire for fame does not materialize then false

memory runs a complete programme of anger and re-

venge under it.

…to be continued.

Life is God’s greatest boon. Being born as a human being is God’s greatest gift to

obtaining luxuries is akin to looking down on life. Life is endless, our strengths are also

endless and our potential is also vast. We are able to utilize only about 5-10 per cent of

our physical, mental, social and spiritual strengths. If we use our internal strengths fully,

we turn from man into superman, from human to super-powerful humans. Our human

consciousness gradually falls down to a licentious consciousness and the world out of

delusion starts worshipping human beings as Gods. All the divine qualities that were

present in Sri Krishna, Sri Ram, Mahayogi Shiva, Mahavir Swami, Nirvana-attaining

Buddha, Guru Nanakdev and Guru Govind Singh are also inherent in us. A yogi should

never consider himself poor, helpless or powerless. At every moment tell yourself, I am

have within myself the patience of the earth, the energy of fire, the speed of wind, the

calmness of water and the vastness of the sky.

My brain has the energy, intellect, wisdom and brilliance of the Brahmin. My arms

have the courage, strength, power and dignity of the Kshatriya. Within my stomach I

have the business strategies of the Vaishya and I consider it my honour to be able to

serve like the Sudra. I am not an individual but a culture. I am a messenger of eternal

traditions. India is in me. I am the beloved child of mother India. “ekrk Hkwfe iq=kks¿g

immortal, brilliant, rootless, eternal soul.

Love, kindness, peace and vatshalya is my identity and religion. My work is my

religion. I am not merely a worshipper of stone idols but of those living idols that my

Lord has created Himself and in whose souls He resides himself. I am the worshipper

of the chaitanya murta Brahma. Storms cannot make me bend, obstacles cannot

hinder my life path and insults cannot distract my patience. I will make my life blessed

by surrendering totally to obey the instructions of my guru and the scriptures. I will not

allow any hindrance to the flow of virtue in my life. At each moment, I will lead a life

full of love, kindness, courage, bravery, power, self-confidence. At every moment, my

external and internal life will remain pure and free from fault. In my life, the good of the

nation will be above everything else and this will be my motto. I am first of all the child

of Mother India and only after that I am an ascetic, householder, politician, actor, worker,

officer or businessman. How could I have existed if my country did not exist? My

country is everything for me. This life is for the nation. This life is for God. This is the

aim of my life. Duty towards my nation comes before my political duties or ascetic

duties. The nation’s glory is my glory and any insult to my nation is an insult towards

me. I will not allow my country’s glory, pride and honour to be tarnished. Even if I have

to sacrifice everything, I will do so in order to make India the superpower of the world.

I will bring back the lost glory of my country.

Come! Come forward and be ready to sacrifice everything in fulfilling this

pure and holy resolution.

Come! Let us all unite to build a new India together.

Swami Ramdevji Maharaj is a historic

personality. He has written new his-

tory in the areas of yoga-prananyam

and ayurvedic treatment methods.

In this regard the work done by the

organization established by him

namely Patanjali Yogpeeth and

University, Patanjali Yog Samitis,

Divya Yog Pharmacy Trust and

branches, will be written in golden

letters on the pages of history. He

has written a eternal and indestruc-

tible history of Indian traditional glory.

Another historic aspect of Swami

Ramdevji Maharaj’s personality is the

short period of time in which he has done

this magnificent work. In the time take by

highly qualified management gurus and engineers to

draw their designs or write their ideas on paper, Swamiji

is able to show the complete manifested work within

that timeframe. It is a result of his miraculous personal-

ity that lack of money has never become an issue in the

fulfillment of his work. Whatever task he takes in hand,

Swamiji never fails to fulfill it. Once he starts, he doesn’t

turn back. Losing is something that Swamiji hasn’t learnt.

Napoleon’s motto - ‘Defeat is a word found in the

dictionary of cowards’ – is Swamiji’s inspirational sen-

tence. Swami Ramdev has the courage to blow to

smithereens the rocks that may come up as obstacles

on the way. The coming generations will remember such

a personality for hundreds and thousands of years. By

observing, reading and hearing about the work done by

him, people will continue to be fascinated. With the pas-

sage of time, it is also possible that some of his emo-

tional devotees start worshipping him as God. How-

ever, Swamiji would never want this to happen. Swamiji

is a believer in Gita’s Karmayog and ‘Work is wor-

The vastness, emotion and attractiveness of Swamiji’s

personality do not need any proof. The print, visual and

Swamiji gives them the privilege of telecasting him live.

Every TV channel, newspaper reporter, press reporter

explicable and rare characteristics in

Swamiji’s personality that adds a lot

of charisma to his programme on

yoga. Swamiji has connected an-

cient Vedic culture with modern

consumerist culture. While Swamiji

talks about religion, spirituality and

philosophy, he also does not hesitate

to adopt modern technology or sci-

ence. Swamiji adopts everything that

is positive, no matter where it comes

from. Swamiji has declared war on pre-

tence, superstition, rituals and rites, etc that

take place in the name of tradition. He has re-

vealed the truth behind the masks of many a so-called

great man. He is on the side of brotherhood, harmony,

cooperation, equality amongst religions, peace, etc. He

is a staunch enemy of bias based on regions, caste, re-

ligion, community, language, and of terrorism, etc. His

doors are always closed to hatred, jealousy, falsehood,

corruption, etc.

There is an unique coexistence of qualities such as

yoga and spirituality, philosophy, social service, nation

service, humanitarian service, service to all living be-

ings, valour, energy, strength, sympathy, love, devotion,

kindness, ability to fight against bad elements, etc. in his

personality. When Swamiji speaks about Vedas,

Upanishads, scriptures, philosophy, yoga, Samadhi,

pranayam and spirituality, it seems as if the actual com-

pilers of the Vedas are in front of us. When Swamiji

simplifies and explains to us the hidden secrets of yoga

and Ayurveda, it seems as if the great sage Patanjali,

Dhanwantari, Charak and Susrut are themselves in front

of us under a vast banyan tree in a hut making divine

medications. When Swamiji declares war against sins,

torture, injustice, corruption, bribery, idleness, robbery,

betrayal of the nation, widespread ineptitude in gover-

nance, cowardliness, impotency, etc. and calls out to

destroy them, the images of Purushottam Ram and

Karmayogi Krishna take shape before us. When

Swamiji invites us to shoot out at the internal betrayers

- Narendra Kumar Yadav, D.A.V, Narnol

and cheaters who threaten the independence, dig-

nity, unity and vastness of the nation and the external

terrorists and makes a loud sky-piercing noise against

them, making the enemy shiver with fright – the actual

form of brave soldiers such as Maharana Pratap, Shivaji,

Rani Lakshmibai, Tantiya Tope, Chandrashekhar Azad,

Bhagat Singh, Subhash Bose, Vir Sabarkar, Sardar Patel,

etc. appear before us and challenges the enemy, asking

them to step on to the battlefield. When Swamiji calls

upon everyone to make this world disease-free and

healthy, and when he prays for the goodness of the

world in a very pure manner, it seems as if the Lord of

all Lord, Mahadev Shiva has appeared before us. When

Swamiji shows the emotions of pity, love, kindness and

affection towards the poor, orphans and helpless, it

seems as if Mother Parvati has spread her cloak over

the world to protect it from all bad influences. When

Swamiji roars with energy, valour and heroism, it ap-

pears as if Durga has come down to Earth herself. Start-

ing new activities each day, he appears to take the form

of Shri Ganesh. From his wish of protection, caring,

conservation of all living beings, he appears to like the

preserver of the world, like Vishnu. When he speaks

of religion, spirituality, philosophy, spread of the knowl-

edge of the Vedas and Upanishads, social welfare, in-

dependence, etc., it seems as if Maharshi Dayanand

has again come back on this earth in the form of Swami

Ramdev. When he speaks of philosophy, purity, devel-

opment of orphans and the poor, cleanliness, a society

free from disease, sorrow and fear, truth, non-violence,

etc., we see Gautama Buddha, Mahabir Swami, and

Mahatma Gandhi in him. The other qualities of

Swamiji’s personality are; patience as the earth, seri-

ousness like the ocean, speed, energy and enthusiasm

like the wind, thunder like the clouds, energy, valour,

strength like the sun and fire, peacefulness like the moon,

roar like the lion, softness like butter, vastness like the

sky, service towards others like a tree, calmness and

thirst-quenching like the water, nutritious and filling like

rice. He is the one person in whom all such Godly quali-

ties are mixed. The qualities of all the four castes –

Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and sudra are seen in

Swamiji.

Now I would like to throw light on a few points about

Swamiji’s work and projects. Swamiji removes the fear-

fear and diseases from people across the world. Fol-

lowing the saying ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam’, Swamiji

has made the entire world his home. Just like a true

pilgrim, he travels the world for the good of others, in

both the country and abroad. To regulate his work from

a central point, Swamiji established the Divya Mandir

(Trust) and the Patanjali Yogpeeth (Trust), the ambition

of which are to reach yoga and Ayurveda to the 700

crore global population along with Indian culture and

words of the sages. The words of the Veda, ‘Krinvanto

vishwamaryam’ will only then become fulfilled. Till the

year 2009, Swamiji had developed up to 1 lakh yoga

teachers and started translating this into work. Under

the guidance of the Patanjali Yogpeeth, Patanjali Yog

Samitis have been established in all districts of the coun-

try. In most districts, at the Tehsil level too, sub-samitis

have also been established. Across the country, there

are over 35,000 yoga classes being run which benefits

over 20 lakh people everyday. Swamiji’s aim is ‘Healthy

India-disease-free world’. To fullfil this ambition and

ensure that the message of yoga and pranayam reaches

each one, Swamiji himself continuously moves from one

corner of the world to another and organizes yoga camps

– teaching people yoga, pranayam, asana, etc. Swamiji

wants to develop a peaceful world – happy, prosperous

and with brotherhood. Where no person dies of hunger,

everyone gets a place to stay, there are clothes on the

body, everyone gets employment, and freedom from

poverty. Amongst Swamiji’s revolutionary thoughts, one

is that the farmers of India should adopt the cultivation

of medicinal herbs and plants along with fruits and veg-

etables. They should made ready raw material for

Ayurvedic medicine. It is also on Swamiji’s minds to set

up units in various places to derive juice from fruits and

prepare pickles. This will give a new face to the Indian

economy. By giving the proper price to farmers, Swamiji

wants the farmers to make ready pickles, juice, sweets,

etc. the consumption of these will not only improve

people’s health but also provide new avenues for em-

ployment to hundreds of people. The income of farm-

ers will increase with the cultivation of medicinal herbs

and plants, and at the same time invaluable foreign cur-

rency too will be saved. To encourage the use of

Ayurvedic medicine (if medicines are to be taken in

serious illnesses), Swamiji manufactures superior qual-

ity and proven medicine in Divya Yog Pharmacy. This

too will provide relief from foreign multinational medi-

cine companies and stop crores of dollars from leaving

the shores of the nation. According to Swamiji, only in

Allopathic medicine, Rs 6 lakh crore is being spent. If

diseases could be controlled with the help of yoga,

pranayam and Ayurvedic medicine, then the country’s

economic problems could be solved in just one instant.

India can again become the golden bird. These are the

kinds of ideas that Swamiji has to improve the rural

Page 27: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 27

economic situation and in fulfilling which he works hard

day and night. In this way, Swamiji is encouraging the

Swadeshi movement and is trying to stop millions of

dollars from leaving the country. In this way, Samiji also

wants to completely ban cow slaughter, intoxicating

substances such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc. because

these accountable for the sorry state of the nation to a

large extent.

Cow is considered to be a mother in Indian culture.

The cow not only nourishes our body with milk, curd,

cream, ghee, etc. but cow’s milk, ghee, dung and urine

also act as medicine. If cow’s dung is used as natural

fertilizer in the fields then clearly we won’t have to use

poisonous chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers act

as sweet poison and the fruits and vegetables that arise

with its use are the carriers of various diseases. Again

we have to spend a huge amount of money in curing

these diseases along with harming our body. The land’s

fertility to decreases and finally becomes infertile. Cow

dung is a very superior fertilizer which not only increase

production of crop but also increases quality.

Similarly, Swamiji calls he cultivator of tobacco and

manufacturers of alcohol, ‘death traders’. The intake

of these leads to TB. Asthma, Hepatitis B, etc, dis-

eases and crores of money of the country in spent in

treating these incurable diseases. Even then people fall

victim to untimely deaths. According to Swamiji, his

programme includes complete ban on cow slaughter,

complete ban on manufacture of tobacco and alcohol,

and adoption of yoga, Pranayam and Indian treatment

methods and agricultural methods based on Ayurveda

to make the country free from disease, sorrow and fear

within just one year and make it capable and prosper-

ous.

Swamiji is all for crushing out terrorists, betrayers,

spies, corrupt people hidden in the country. Swamiji is

in need of a brave, courageous, patriotic, dedicated po-

litical leader who can keep the country’s glory, dignity,

honour and self-respect intact and can keep mother

India’s head high in the world. In this way, Swamiji

wants to establish Indian industries and chase foreign

multinational companies out of the country because these

foreign companies take out a lot of invaluable money

from the country. If Indians start using goods made in

India, then the money of the nation will remain in the

nation and the country will become prosperous. In this

way, Swamiji’s slogan is – ‘Health is our birthright.’

Along with the desire to make the entire country dis-

ease-free and healthy, Swamiji is also trying his best.

According to Swamiji, yoga is a superior life process.

Yoga is a complete life philosophy. Yoga is a complete

treatment science, self-knowledge and self-rule. Yoga

is the path that takes one from bondage to Samadhi.

Yoga is the best way to develop our production, quality,

positivism, etc. Swamiji wants to se India as the most

beautiful and healthy country in the world. Swamiji wants

India’s population to be controlled. Less but more ca-

pable children should be developed. Swamiji wants

cleanliness to be observed in all travel infrastructure,

railway-bus station, airports, tourist spots, hotels and

hostels, all roads, parks and offices, work places and

other public places such as hospitals, schools, markets,

etc. People should understand their responsibilities and

make this country beautiful and clean.

According to Swamiji, only cleanliness, health, sin-

cerity in work and sensitivity will lead to prosperity in

the nation. Swamiji wants to encourage yoga, Ayurveda,

Indian sports, work and exercise in order to develop the

self-reliance of the nation. According to Swamiji, we

should stop using foreign products made with zero-tech-

nology. Swamiji is against non-vegetarianism and for

vegetarianism. He believes in the right of all living be-

ings to live. According to him, we do not have the right

to take the life of any living being. In Swamiji’s opinion,

the religion of the nation is the best religion. Motherland

and mother tongue is even better than heaven. It is

Swamiji’s desire that India becomes the world’s spiri-

tual and economic superpower. Swamiji wants to de-

stroy the germs that have erupted in the nation’s sys-

tem. He wants to bring about a radical change in the

system by destroying the following vices prevalent in

governing bodies: idleness during work hours, incapa-

bility, bribery, red-tapeism, nepotism, corruption, late-

ness, irresponsibility, etc.

After the above-mentioned details, I can say with

surety that Swamiji’s personality is vast and it is impos-

sible to describe it with just a few words. Hi entire life

is a philosophy in which the deeper you dive, the more

invaluable pearls you will get. Swamiji is the creator of

a generation, an ascetic with a revolutionary outlook.

Within just a few years, there are researches going on

in universities across the world on Swamiji, his life phi-

losophy, his personality and work as part of M.Phil and

Phd projects. Really, Swamiji’s personality and work

has now acquired such a vast form that it is impossible

for a single person to present it in the complete form all

by himself. For this, scholars across the world will have

to do deep research and bring forward invaluable gems

from the depths.

It is better to fight once against ter-rorism rather than dying again and againbecause of it: Swami Ramdevv Each martyr’s family was given Rs 5 lakh as an

honour.

v The Capital’s brave martyr Mohan Chandra Sharma

was also paid tribute.

v Shanti Yagnas were organized in 21 sacrificial pits

and patriotic poems were read.

Filled with deep love for the nation, Swami Ramdev

gave Rs 5 lakh to the families of the immortal martyrs

who laid down their lives to uphold the honour of the

nation, while fighting courageously against evil and

trained terrorists. This sum of honour was handed over

to the bereft families by Patanjali Yogpeeth in New

Delhi’s Pragati Maidan in a vast ceremony to honour

and pay respects to the departed souls.

The founder of Patanjali Yogpeeth, Swami Ramdevji;

mahamantri, Acharya Balkrishnaji; Swami Muktanandji;

commander in chief and senior officers of the National

Security Guards; Anti-terrorist Front’s Maninderjeet

Singh Bitta ji; Chairman of Chatisgarh, Suresh Goyal;

Parliamentarian Chandrakant Khere; Chairman of

Phoolwari, Mahesh Kapoor and well-known social

worker Chowdhury Mitrasen were present in this cer-

emony. On behalf of crores of Indian citizens, the

Patanjali family conferred honour on the families of the

brave martyrs of the National Security Guards, Mumbai

Police and Railway Police Force. The families of im-

mortal martyrs Hemanta Karkare, Vijay Salaskar,

Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Gajendra Singh, Sasank Singde,

Prakash More, Bapurao Durgude, Balwant Bhonsle,

Tukaram Gopal Anbole, Arun Chitte, Vijay Khandekar,

Jayant Patil, Anbadas Pawar, Yogesh Patil, Murlidhar

Chowdhury, Rahul Singde and Mukesh Yadav were

present.

On this occasion, the martyr of the Batala House

encounter in the Capital, Mohan Chand Sharma from

Delhi Police, was also honoured. His wife, Srimati Maya

Sharma was handed the sum of Rs 5 lakh as a mark of

respect.

Swamiji says, “Cowardly, weak and timid people can

never live with self-respect and security. It is better to

fight once against terrorism rather then dying again and

again because of terrorism. India has every right for

self-security. Every Indian now has to instill in oneself

Page 31: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

the valour, courage, sacrifice, energy and self-respect

of Chattrapati Shivaji, Netaji Subhash, Guru Govind

Singh, Maharana Pratap and Jhansi ka Rani. Every In-

dian has to fight for self-respect, has to live with dignity

and has to be prepared to even die for the sake of self-

security. Wake up! Take the vow of national security,

No more solicitation, now fight!’

On this occasion, thousands of people thronged the

Hansdwani Theatre in Pragati Maidan and performed

21 yagnas for the peace of the departed souls as well

as for the strength of the nation.

All the martyr families offered offerings in these fires.

To inspire the feeling of love for the nation in each one,

special poems on the love of the nation were recited by

well-known poets lead by Hariom Pawar. All eyes were

wet after watching and hearing the families of the mar-

tyrs.

It is better to fight against terrorism and become a

martyr rather than die a tortuous slow death because of

terrorism. Perhaps it is with this thought that the brave

martyrs must have reached to take revenge. Dealing

strongly against terrorism is perhaps the best tribute

one can pay these martyrs. This is what Swami Ramdev

said while paying tributes to the martyrs of Mumbai

and Delhi attacks. On this occasion, he gifted the fam-

ily of each martyr a sum of Rs 5 lakh. This money was

from Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust.

Earlier, in Hansdwani Theatre of Pragati Maidan,

slogan such as ‘Long Live Mother India’ and ‘All glo-

ries to the brave young men, the country is proud of

you’ filled the air and the streets echoed with these

slogans. Thousands of people were seen showing their

gratitude to the families of the martyrs with moist eyes.

If someone said that these families were not only of the

martyrs but of the nation, then policies could have been

discussed.

The Hansdhwani theatre was jam-packed. The rela-

tives of the martyrs who had come from Mumbai and

Delhi were seated in the middle. The programme started

with peace sacrifices. Peace sacrifices were performed

by building altars for sacrificial fires. Apart from Yog

Guru Swami Ramdevji, Acharya Balkrishnaji, Swami

Muktanand and anti-terrorist front’s head, M.S. Bitta

was also present. The grandson of Kuldip Singh, Shahid

Bhagat Singh’s brother, namely Yadvendra Sandhu, and

Manindrajit Singh ‘Bitta’ was also honoured. All the

cess. The lines of hundreds of buses and cars gave it

the form of a Yoga Awareness Rally. Teachers, devo-

tees and common people participated in large numbers

to make this event memorable and historic. Apart from

the bereaved families, people were present in great

numbers.

The speakers on the occasion made the martyrs he-

roes of modern India. Every citizen and youth was ap-

pealed to be prepared to sacrifice their lives to annihi-

late the intentions of the jehadis. Speakers said that if

we have to live with self-respect, sacrifice is very nec-

essary today.

(THE UNDERSTANDING OF DEMOCRACY)

Legislation, executive, judiciary and media are the four pillars of democracy. In a democracy, the voters are not wretched, desperate, helpless, or slaves andthe administrators are not owners. On the other hand, the administrators arechosen by the people and are nothing but social servants with powers and au-thority. The MLAs and MPs have been chosen by us for our benefit. We have

not made them our representatives in order to exploit instead of rule or to hidebehind the veil of justice and torture us or to do us injustice. We have not givenrights to the people’s representatives so that they may take away our own rightto live. Administrators are our employees and in return for their service, wegive an MLA/MP, minister, chief minister or prime minister salary, house, entireexpenses, travel and petrol, car, etc. with of our taxes. Administrators do not

work for free and on the other hand in return for their service each one of usare paying a heavy price for each one of them, the entire expenses, and for thewelfare of our society, town and nation, give them rights and if they misusethese rights, then we have every right to remove them from their post to protectour rights. In the present time, the large numbers of corrupt administrators andcorrupt officers have put such a fear in the hearts of people that a common man

feels that he is helpless, orphaned, and desperate and even though living inIndependent India, out of fear of the rulers, he is exploited again and again. Now awaken! Do not accept exploitation in the name of administration anylonger – live with complete self-respect, self-rule and freedom! This country isyours, you are not a slave but a citizen of free India! Similar to the legislature, executive and the judiciary too, that is in the entire democratic process, entiregoverning authorities, police organization and judiciary, etc. have also been set

up for the security and justice of the people so that we can live with self-respect. However, if some government official, clerk or police officer is doinginjustice with us, that is insulting you by behaving in an unconstitutional manner, then you have every right to raise your voice against the corrupt system andgive punishment to the corrupt authorities, to free them from their job becauseall government elements are there to give us security and justice, and for this

service we pay very high taxes. Do not be scared of them. Certainly behaverespectfully with then and show them honour but always remember that theyare not your masters, they are your employees. In democracy, every Indian orevery person is his own master and he has moral and constitutional rights.Every citizen has the right to live with complete freedom, complete administra-tion and self-respect. Thus, awaken! And do not bear up with exploitation, in-

justice and corruption in the name of governance. Whosoever is corrupt shouldbe removed from his post by exercising your voting power and in his stead, bring in those nationalists, foresighted, brave, skillful people who are love thecountry and are honest, in whose hearts there is passion for the nation and whotruly desires the progress of the country with an honest heart. To bring in suchhonest people, come forward to cast 100% votes and save the country! We

take a pledge that we will not loot our country and nor will we allow corrupt, dishonest and criminal people to loot the nation.

This is my country. I will not allow it to be destroyed.

In the present time,

the large number of

corrupt administrators

and corrupt officers

have put such a fear in

the hearts of people

that a common man

feels that he is help-

less, orphaned, and

desperate and even

though living in Inde-

pendent India, out of

fear of the rulers, he is

exploited again and

again. Now awaken!

Do not accept exploi-

tation in the name of

administration any

longer – live with

complete self-respect,

self-rule and freedom!

This country is yours,

you are not a slave but

a citizen of free India!

Similar to the legisla-

ture, executive and the

judiciary too, that is in

the entire democratic

process, entire govern-

ing authorities, police

organization and

judiciary, etc. have

also been set up for

the security and jus-

tice of the people so

that we can live with

-Swami Ramdev

Yoga is a life philosophy, yoga is self-regulation,

yoga is a way of life, yoga is the resolution of a disease-

free life and of a life of meditation. Yoga is the highest

form of spiritual knowledge of self-remedy and self-

philosophy. Yoga transforms a man from a dwarf into a

giant or transforms or raises oneself from all forms.

Yoga is not just an optional treatment method but, on

the basis of outcomes, yoga is such a truth that removes

diseases by the roots. In other words, it is not just a

complete treatment method for physical ailments but

also for mental diseases.

Yoga does not treat symptoms as in allopathy but it

removes the root cause of the disease and makes us

healthy from within. To look at yoga simply as a form

of exercise or as the property of one caste that aids in

religious rites is an extremely narrow and ignorant view-

point. We should rise up from selfishness, obstinacy and

ignorance and look at yoga as a science.According to an ancient belief, it is thought that yoga

awakens the eight chakras and that pranayam removesthe bad culture and sins that have gathered in us overmany lives.

When I studied the scientific background of the eightchakras and when the ancient Sanskrit words werecompared with modern medical science, I found thatthe Muladhar, Swadhistan, Manipur, Hriday, Anahat,Aagya and Shahashrar chakras are connected withReproductive, Excretory, Digestive, Skeletal, Circula-tory, Respiratory, Nervous and endocrine systems re-spectively. The work from the Muladhar to the Shahasraris similar to the work from the reproductive to the en-docrine system. With regular and skilful practise of yogaand pranayam makes these very eight chakras or sys-tems fit and balanced.

The imbalance in any one system leads to a numberof ailments or disorders. The language may be anythingbut the attitude of both science and spirituality is thesame. Language is but a medium for expression of feel-ings. However, with the self-destruction that occurredover 400 years of slavery, we now consider Anabolism,Catabolism and Metabolism to be correct instead ofVata, Pitta and Kapha.

By not visualizing our tradition, culture and knowl-edge with self-pride, we are filled with a sense of wea-riness. By reading the word ‘chakra’ we get moving incircles but when we read the word ‘system, we feelourselves to be very systematic whereas the basis of

ancient and modern knowledge is the same.

Instead of the Ayurvedic theory of ‘Pragyaparadho

hi Sarvarogana Mulkaranam’ (Charak), we feel ‘stress

is the main cause of all diseases’ is more scientific. Now,

let go of obstinacy and acknowledge the truth. For ex-

ample, with the imbalance of endocrine system, stress

and a number of complicated stress-related diseases

such as heart diseases, blood pressure, depression, obe-

sity, and diabetes etc. are developed. Similarly, with the

imbalance of the skeletal system, over a 100 kinds of

only arthritis can develop and a person falls victim to

muscular atrophy. What I mean to say is that any im-

balance of internal systems is illness and internal bal-

ance is freedom from illness.

By trying yoga directly and indirectly with thousands

of people, I have found that regular practice of the main

eight pranayams according to the correct procedure at

a fixed time and with a determined mind leads to com-

plete balance in our eight chakras or eight systems. As

a result we get a healthy life from yoga. At the same

time, the need for the chemical salts and hormones that

we intake in the form of medicine gradually reduces

because whatever chemical salts and hormones we

have been taking from outside, we now start getting

them from within.

Yoga is not a pigeon-hole like allopathy and is a com-

plete cure. Apart from emergency and surgical treat-

ment, in all aspects of the remaining treatments, yoga is

a superior treatment skill. If Ayurveda is used along

with yoga in the treatment of certain complicated dis-

eases, then the effect is more profound.

Apart from the disease-curing aspects of yoga, the

spiritual aspect is very vast. Hence the principal aim of

yoga is attainment of Samadhi or knowing the divine

truth. With this, anything that comes in the way of at-

taining Samadhi with the help of yoga, such as diseases,

gets ended automatically. In other words, the automatic

destruction of the obstacles of yoga is the by-product

of yoga. We should always remember that the main

aim is attainment of Samadhi. This opinion on yoga is

not merely a Buddhist exercise, any dream, propaganda

or assurance and the use of yoga is very precise and

real. I am assured that in the coming times, the world

will shed its obstinacy and will adopt yoga as its own

and there will develop a peaceful, healthy, sensitive and

prosperous world and nation. Science and spirituality,

material science and spiritual science will grow com-

pletely at the same rate. Religion of the soul and of the

Page 36: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

nation will arise from yoga. The world will move

forward on the path of self-good and global good. People

will shed the identities of caste, community, religion,

region, language, communalism, etc and take up the iden-

tity of the country and of humanity. And India will emerge

as the most superior country in all cultural, spiritual,

economic and social aspects. Feelings of hatred, fear,

desire, discontent, false intellect, anger, extravagance,

etc arises from lack of peace. With the help of pranayam

and meditation, when people’s minds become peaceful,

then the fear, illusion, hatred, crime, and corruption preva-

lent in the society, nation and the world will also be

removed and there will be regulated rise of devotion

and fall of vices. The only solution to such material de-

terioration is exactly this material outlook. The end of

the age of hatred, crime and sexual madness is only

possible through the global establishment of yoga, oth-

erwise no one can prevent the great destruction.

-Rakesh Kumar, Patanjali Yogpeeth, Haridwar

Chandrashekhar Azad, the immortal martyr who

started the fiery band in 23 July, 1906, was born in

Badarka village in Unnab district in Uttar Pradesh.

His father’s name was Pandit Sitaram Tiwari,

mother’s name was Jagrani Devi. Chandrashekhar

Azad completed his primary education from a school

in Bhavra village in Madhya Pradesh and after this,

he came to Varanasi where he got further education

in Sanskrit.

In those days, Mahatma Gandhi started the non-

cooperation movement to awaken the British govern-

ment. Chandrashekar took a vow to free Mother India

from her shackles and jumped into the freedom move-

ment. Along with him, he also gathered other students

and youth and the group grew up and started taking

part in national activities.

At the age of only 15 years, the English arrested

him. After he was arrested and presented before the

judge, the judge asked him what his name was. With-

out hesitation, Chandrashekhar said, “Azad”. The

second question was the name of his father to which

he replied, “Swadhin”. The third question was about

his address which he replied, “Prison”. On hearing

this, the judge ordered 15 whacks on the back with a

cane. On hearing the word ‘cane’, even very srong

and brave people get the shivers but this child faced

the cane bravely and after each whack, shouted

“Bharat Mata ki Jai” (“Long live Mother India”).

This child became famous by the name of

Chandrashekhar ‘Azad’ and started gathering revo-

lutionist with more enthusiasm.

Chandrasekhar Azad, with his amazing team de-

velopment skills and feelings of sacrifice, held a spe-

cial place among the revolutionaries. Because of his

capabilities, he worked shoulder to shoulder with

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Vijay Kumar

Singha, Bhagwandas, etc.

The British government was terrorized by the in-

creasing revolutionary activities. The English wanted

to stop these activities at any cost. They wanted to

get hold of Chandrashekhar Azad, dead or alive, at

any cost.

At this time, he along with his associates looted a

train near Kakori, which was a great boost to the

morale of the revolutionaries. They now had money

to carry ahead their revolutionary activities. In the

Kakori episode, some of Chandrashekhar’s friends

were captured but Azad escaped.

Chandrshekhar Azad made plans to kill Sanders

with Bhagat Singh. According to instructions by

Chandrshekhar, Bhagat Singh and Batukesar blasted

the bomb in the assembly. After this incident, Bhagat

Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, etc happily kissed the

hangman’s noose.

The British police wanted to get hold of Azad in

someway but he always managed to fool them. On

27 February 1936, Azad was seated in Alfred Park

in Allahabad, when he was surrounded on all sides

by the police on the basis of a secret information.

Despite being alone, Chandrashekhar replied the

bullets of the policemen with his own bullets and

killed three of them. Upon realizing that the bullets

were finishing, he sacrificed himself on the feet of

Mother India to remain forever ‘Azad’.

Chandrashekhar Azad remained free till the last

moment and with the help of his sacrifice, hundreds

of young revolutionaries forced the British to leave

India.

DAYANAND JAYANTI SPECIAL

What and how important was the role of Swami

Dayanand in India’s first fight for independence or na-

tional mutiny? Pandit Jaychandra Vidyalankar wrote his

views on the subject in his book ‘Rashtriya Itihaas ka

Anushilan’. Some of his thoughts were the following –

In the year 1847, he met with a group of ascetics in

Maharashtra, on the banks of the Narmada, and taking

Sanyas from their leader Purnanand Saraswati, he got

the name of Dayanand. Even after this he kept in touch

with Purnanand and his companions and this had a great

impact on the first destination of his life’s journey.

Vidyalankar continues – “In 1855, Dayanand was on

his way to Haridwar to meet Purnanand and at that

time, there was a feeling of resentment impatience

amongst the people of north India for independence.”

We can see that Vidyalankar clearly has some doubts

and even he himself understands that there is some dis-

crepancy of his thoughts. The question is whether

Dayanand had a second meeting with the Maharastrian

Ascetic, Swami Purnanand from who he had taken the

initiation of Sanyas. Was this the same Purnanand to

study under whom Dayanand went to Haridwar? How-

ever, he had become very old and as he was also under

the vow of silence, he refused to teach Dayanand. When

Dayanand insisted, then he wrote on a piece of paper

that he should go to Mathura and meet Virjananad and

study under him to fulfill his desire. Even Purnanand

has his doubts on whether the Purnanand who initiated

Dayanand and the person he met in Haridwar during

the Kumbh Mela are one and the same person. How-

ever, the answer is clear. It is not possible that they

were the same. Swami Dayanand’s guru, Swami

Purnanand hailed from Maharastra while Virjanand’s

guru, Swami Purnashram (that is, Purnanand) was a

Gaur Brahman, whose primary residence was in

Haryana.

Not giving much thought to whether Dayanand’s ini-

tiation guru, Purnanand and the Purnanand he met in

1855 in Haridwar are one and the same person, Pandit

vidyalankar moves ahead – “It may be that Dayanand

Saraswati also went to Haridwar for this problem. Buton

hearing his question, old Purnanand said – My disciple

Virjanand is an expert on this subject. Go and meet him

in Mathura.” Vidyalankar thinks the issue that Dayanand

was concerned about might be how India can gain in-

dependence. Swami Dayanand must have wanted to

get Purnanand’s opinion in this regard but because of

his old age, he did not have nay discussion with Dayanand

on the topic and asked him to go and meet his political-

minded disciple, Virjanand.

The biographer of Swami Virjanand agrees to the

fact that Swami Purnashram was a very learned scholar

of the Ashtadhyayi Vyakaran, Panini’s famous trea-

tise on grammer consisting eight chapters. Devedranath

clearly states that Purnashram was a guide to ancient

texts written by sages such as Panini. It is very clear

-Dr. Bhavanilal Bhart

Page 40: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 40

that Swami Purnashram was very respected among

sages and scholars for his knowledge and skill on an-

cient and vedic texts. The writer of ‘Virjanand Prakash’,

Pandit Bhimsen Shastri too writes on him – “(Swami

Purnanand) was very respectful of the Ashtadhyayi

and other texts written by such sages and this respect

was also instilled in his disciples.” From the above it is

clear that Dayanand went to Purnanand to get knowl-

edge on ancient texts but as he was unable to help be-

cause of physical inablities, Dayanand had to go and

meet Virjanand. However, how can it be said that

Dayanand had gone to meet Swami Purnanand with

the intention of getting some ideas on how to remove

British rule in India when the main topic of Dayanand’s

thoughts and discussions at that time was religion and

treatises?

To prove his theory that Swami Dayanand had some

hand in the 1857 mutiny, Pandit Jaychandra in his ear-

lier mentioned book, writes – “Dayanand had plans of

going to Garhwal from haridwa. He decided to go to

Mathura after returning from that journey. However,

returning from Garhwal to Garhmukteshwar, instead of

going south-west, he went south-east. He reached

Kanpur instead of Mathura and he postponed his trip to

Virjanand for the next five years. thus, he must have

come in contact with some very important work in the

interim that pulled him to Kanpur. At that time, in Bithur

near Kanpur, able collaborators were being hunted for

Nanasaheb Ghondopant, who was about the same age

as him. The help of sages and ascetics were of great

value for him. Pandit Jaychandra’s argument is based

on the fact that if Dayanand had to go to Mathura, why

did he go to Kanpur and even after this why, for three

years, did he roam about in the forested banks of the

Narmada in an unidentifiable condition? However, ask-

ing a pilgrimage-loving ascetic of the highest order why

he was traveling through such and such a place at such

and such a time does not have much meaning. Till the

time Dayanand did not decide his life’s purpose clearly,

his travels through the country were totally dependent

on his own wish. Thus, the mention of his meeting with

Nanasahed after arriving at Kanpur is based on imagi-

nation and not fact.

About two years after the failure of the last stage of

the 1857 revolution, in 1860, Swami Dayanand arrived

at the school of Virjanand. According to Pandit

Jaychandra, after the effort of 1857 failed, it was nec-

essary to know the causes of failure and the solutions

and it is for this reason that Dayanand went to meet

Virjanand. This theory too is also again based on the

writer’s feelings and not on fact because the thoughts

and messages of both were based on scriptures. It is

with the strong desire of knowledge that Dayanand went

to the seer of divine wisdom. According to Pandit

Debedranath Mukhoppadhyay, he had heard of the

scholarship of Virjanand while traveling on the banks of

the Narmada. Only one of the above two things can be

true and t is true that he wanted to visit the place of

origin of the Narmada and find out scholars in places

like Kashi before finally starting on a definite study plan.

It is for this reason that he spent four years traveling

across Uttarakhand and on the banks of Narmada. It is

completely baseless that some hidden political desire

emerged which inspired leadership in the 1857 revolt.

Pandit Jaychandra’s theories are entirely based on

his own ideas and imagination. Giving as example the

words of Satyaswarup Shastri of the Adasi Math in

Banaras, he says that the ascetic community has al-

ways been under the impression that Dayanand played

an important role in the 1857 revolt. However, no one

says what is the base of this rumour. The mention of

blowing up of idols by English canons in the year 1914

(Vi.) in the 11th chapter of Satyarthaprakash and the

valour of the ‘Bagher’ people is another imaginary writ-

ing. Based on this, Pandit Jaychandra says – This kind

of thing can only be written by a person who was had

heard or saw the revolution closely and someone who

dearly wished that they had a leader like Sri Krishna

with them. There is no harm in imaginary and deriving

facts but this does not prove that Dayanand played any

significant role in the 1857 revolution.

Shri Pithvisingh Mahatta Vidyalankar, in his book

Hamara Rajasthan, did an excellent job in trying to

establish the involvement of Swami Virjanand and Swami

Dayanand in one way or the other in the 1857 revolt.

Pandit Jaychandra too bases his theories on this above

Page 41: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 41

mentioned book of Mahatta. In the seventh chapter of

Prithvisingh Mahatta’s Hamara Rajasthan, ‘Arvachin

Rajasthan’, the investigative discussion presented to

portray Swami Dayanand as the forerunner of Indian

awakening is as follows:

“Till March 1857, he (Dayanand) kept walking along

the Ganga from Gangotri and Badrinath to Banaras and

wandered through Garhwal, Rohilakhand, Doaba and

Kashi, where secret preparations for the revolt were

being carried out with great intensity by the people. In

May, 1857, he entered Nana’s town of Kanpur and for

five months he kept shifting between Kanpur and

Allahabad. Then, passing through Banaras, Mirzapur,

Allahabad, in March 1857 when the preparations for

the revolt was almost complete, then Dayanand too

moved from Banaras via Mirzapur and Chunar to the

Narmada in the southern direction. Dayanand’s self-

written autobiography on his early life suddenly comes

to an end at this point. He never gave any details of

where he stayed and what he did in the next three years

of the revolution. While it is hard to say what was his or

his group’s role in the mutiny and whether he himself

took any part in it personally or not, it is very clear from

the short description of the dates of his life events given

above that he had every opportunity to be closely in-

volved with the preparations of the revolt. It is hard to

believe that Dayanand’s self-knowledge and sensitive

heart and mind could have remained untouched by this

and that the success or failure of this war had no effect

on him.”

As far as the fact of Dayanand’s autobiography com-

ing to an end at the point of his reaching Narmada, it is

very simple and clear. At the time when this autobiog-

raphy was being published by Theosophist, till that time

he had a good relationship with his publishers. How-

ever, with the passage of time, when the gulf between

the Theosophical Society and Arya Samaj increased,

neither the Theosophist had any enthusiasm for pub-

lishing his autobiography and nor did Swami Dayanand

have any time in his busy life to write the next part of

his autobiography. In between all this, he also passed

away. Therefore this writing remained incomplete.

However, Mahatta’s query on what might have been

the effect of the failure or success of the 1857 mutiny

on Dayanand is quite significant. Certainly this is a ques-

tion to ponder upon. But even Prithvisingh Mahatta did

not give any definitive answer to this and simply pre-

sented his own views on the subject.

Apart from the above mentioned example, it is also

important to present another discussion from Hamara

Rajasthan. It is Mahatta’s opinion that staying with

Virjanand for two and a half years, apart from studying

the scriptures, the teacher and disciple also had a lot of

discussions on the state of the nation and during these

discussions apart from the two of them, there was no

third person. One does not have anything against this

innocent assumption of the writer but apart from God,

who could have given him the details of what discus-

sions took place between the teacher and disciple, that

too in the absence of a third person? Amen! Prithvisingh

Mahatta’s remaining evaluation of Dayanand presents

his liberal national profile which is praiseworthy as well

as based on facts.

It is also important and necessary to write here that

Pandit Jaychandra Vidyalankar and Prithvisingh Mahatta

had only presented their views as historians what they

truly believed to be unbiased. Along with the possibili-

ties and assumptions that have been stated by them to

prove their theories, they have also stated their interest

in finding out more proof for these views. However,

with the passage of time, some later writers have writ-

ten such fictitious tales based on their innocent state-

ments that it is as if the main inspiration and master-

mind of the 1857 revolt was Dayanand, that the main

people behind the revolt were very close to Swami

Dayanand and he had every opportunity of advising them

and that Swamiji himself rode in front of the revolution-

aries brandishing his sword. It is impossible to know

beforehand where this fertile imagination of the writers

is going to end. However, it is clear that just as no one

has the authority to ignore the historical facts while dis-

cussing the life of someone as great as Swami

Dayanand, so also no one has the right to tear and dis-

tort truth while presenting it.

After 15 days of my arrest (Siraj), ‘Azad’ became

a martyr in Alfred Park. I was not outside so I am writ-

ing this on the basis of the description of those who

were outside and the newspaper reports of that period.

At that time, Sukhdevraj was with him and hence I am

giving his version first. Describing the mental state of

Azad during those days, Sukhdevraj writes that Azad

was in a very serious state of mind those days. Com-

panions could not be trusted, and all those who could be

trusted were being arrested one after the other. He could

not understand the game being played by Virbhadra and

Yashpal. This was his condition till 27 February, when I

went to meet him. Azad met me outside the park. When

both of us walked in park, we saw a man, sitting on a

culvert, brushing his teeth. I expressed my doubts about

him to Azad. I went too see him again but by then he

was looking at another direction.

On 27 February 1931, when I came back and sat

with him, he asked me out of the blue, “Have you been

to Burma?” I said yes. “Can a few associates go safely

to Burma from Hindustan?”, he asked. I said I studied

this when I went to Burma. Burma and India were un-

divided and there was no need for a passport to get into

Burma. Whatever discussion I had with Azad in this

regard, I discussed with my friends that very day.

At the time when this discussion was taking place, a

person was seen going to the Mayor College on north

Hill Road. Slowing the discussion, Azad said that was

Virbhadra going. Most probably he hadn’t seen us. When

I turned my head to see, the person had moved ahead

and only his back was visible. I had never seen

Virbhadra. Before this incident on 27 February, once or

twice his name came before me. That too when the

plan to kill Virbhadra had failed. Till date, I haven’t seen

Virbhadra with my eyes.

The talk was still going on when a car came and

stopped near us, from which an English officer and two

constables in white clothes got down. As soon as the

car stopped, our heads started to ring. The English

officer came straight at us with a pistol in his hands. He

showed his pistol and asked us in English, “Who are

you people and what are you doing here?”

Azad’s hands were on his pistol and my hands were

on mine. Just as the English officer asked this question,

both of us pulled our pistols and replied in bullets.

However, the white officer’s pistol went off first.

The bullet hit Azad in his thigh. Azad’s bullet hit the

‘Gora’ on his shoulder. Bullets rained from each side.

The constables quickly went and hid in the drain.

We too took the shelter of a jamun tree and for a while,

the fighting ceased. At that moment, Azad said, “there

is a bullet lodged in my thigh. Siraj, you run away.”

On the orders of Azad, I looked for a way to es-

cape. On the left hand side, there was a summer house.

Leaving the shelter of the tree, I ran for the summer

house. Some bullets were fired at me but did not hit me.

Just next to the summer house, there was a wire fence.

I crossed the fence and came out on the street. This

street went via the park to the library. I saw a boy going

down the road on a cycle. I got his cycle by showing

him the pistol. From here I went off towards the library

on cycle. From here, wandering around, I reached Chand

Press. The editor of Chand, Shri Ramrakh Singh Sahgal

was a well-wisher of the group. Those days, I used to

work in a department under him here itself. Sahgal also

knew my real name. As soon as I reached I told Sahgal

Page 43: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

the true story of what happened. He advised me to sign

the attendance register immediately and go and sit in

my place.

It is with regard to this very topic that Sukhdevraj

came to Jaunpur to meet Batuknath Agrawal. It is from

him that I came to know that Leader’s file of 1931-32

is still safe and can be found on searching. We both

went to Allahabad to look for the records of Azad’s

death as well as Yashpal’s arrest. I brought all this down.

The news of Azad’s matyrhood as published by the

Leader on 1 March 1931 was like this: At 10am on

Friday morning, 27 February 1931, bullets kept flying

for at least 20 minutes. This firing took place between

two revolutionaries and the Uttar Pradesh CID. In this

encounter, one revolutionary passed away and Special

Superintendent of CID, Mr J. R. H. Nat Bower and the

Deputy Superintendent, Thakur Visheswar Singh was

hurt by bullets. It is said that Thakur Visheswar Singh

had seen a person who looked like Chandrashekhar Azad.

Azad was on the run from the Kakori as well as other

incidents of intrigues and there was a reward of Rs

5000 on him. Thakur Visheswar expressed this doubt

of his to CID Legal Adviser, Dalchand. Visheswar Singh

went back to his house in Katra and came back at 8am

in the morning with Dalchand and orderly, Sarnam Singh

to see whether this was the same person that he had

his doubts about.

The party went from the direction of City Road very

cautiously so that no one had any suspicions. He saw

that these two were seated on the footpath on the road

that went from North Hill Road corner to the Public

Library through the park. From city road the face of

the fat person was not clear so he was eager to see the

face.

During this, the two people got up and went towards

North Hill. They crossed Dalchand. Dalchand was sitted

on a culvert and cleaning his teeth. He and Visheswar

Singh had thought of the idea of brushing teeth so that

no suspicion falls on them. Dalchand got a shock but he

went towards the east on North Hill road. Later, he

again entered the park from the direction of the Indian

Press entrance. Dalchand had a good look at the faces

of these two and when Thakur Visheswar Singh re-

turned, he told him about the incident.

Nat Bower gave the following description of the in-

cident to the press – Thakur Visheswar sent me the

news that he had seen a per-

son in Alfred Park whose face

resembled that of Azad. I

took constables Mohammed

Zaman and Govind Singh

with me. When we reached

the place where the messen-

ger had left Visheshwar

Singh, he was not seen there.

I left the car at a distance and

walked towards the two people. The constables were

behind me. I stood at a distance of at least 10 gauze

from them and asked them who they were. In reply

they took out their pistols and started firing. My pistol

was ready. Just as I saw the fat person is taking out the

pistol, I fired mine just a second before he fired his. The

constables that were with me also fired at the fat per-

son and also at the person with him.

While I was changing the magazine with another,

the fat person shot at me and the magazine which was

in my left hand fell down. Then I ran towards a tree

which was around 10 gauze from there. The constables

went and hit in a nearby ditch. During this, Viveshwar

Singh arrived, crawled behind a bush and fired from

there at the fat person. In reply, the fat person too shot

back which hit Visheshwar Singh on the face.

I could not fill my pistol. As and when I became

visible, the fat person would shoot at me. Finally he fell

flat on his back. I cannot say whether someone shot at

him or he was injured from before. During all this, people

started gathering and a person approached me with a

shotgun. I could not make out whether the fat person

was really dead or was simply pretending. Thus I asked

this person to take a shot at his legs. The person shot.

After this I went towards the fat person and found that

he was lying dead. In between, Rambadan Singh CID,

who was nearby went to the Colonelganj Police Station

and reported that someone was shooting at an English-

man in the park. On hearing this, the officer-in-charge

Rai Sahib Choudhury Vishal Singh left for the park with

a pistol on a cycle along with two armed guards. He

saw someone was firing at Nat Bower, who was shel-

tering behind a tree. He saw a young man coming to-

wards Nat Bower but he later disappeared. There was

a doubt that he was an associate of Azad and had the

intention of shooting at Nat Bower.

Page 44: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 44

In the meantime,

Dalchand went home and

from there, he sat on a mo-

torcycle and went to the Po-

lice Lines. From there he

phoned the superintendent of

Police, Majors, and sent the

men of the armed Reserve

Police to the park. However,

by the time the policemen

reached the park, the fight was almost over.

While leaving, Nat Bower gave orders for the fat

man to be searched and for post mortem while

Visheshwar Singh was to be taken to the hospital.

In the issue of Leader on 2 march 1931, the news of

the postmortem of immortal martyr Chandrashekhar

Azad was published. This postmortem took place on

Saturday under the supervision of to magistrates, Khan

Sahab Rahman Bakshi and Thakur Mahindrapal Singh.

Later he was also cremated under the supervision of

these two magistrates.

The postmortem of Azad’s body was done by Civil

Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel Townsend. With him were

Dr Gade and Sr. Radhemohan Lal. There were two

bullet wounds on the lower side of the right leg. The

tibia bone was fractured by bullets. One bullet was taken

out from the right thigh. There were two fatal bullets.

One was on the right side of the head and the other

was lodged in his chest which was only revealed during

the postmortem. It is said that the bullet that caused the

wound near the chest made a hole in the right hand

near the shoulder and then pierced the lung and stopped

there. The bullet that hit the head, pierced through the

parietal bone and entered the brain and stopped in the

left side of the lower brain. According to the doctors, it

would be wrong to say that he shot himself. If this was

so, there would have been signs of skin and hair burns,

which were not present.

It is not known whether anyone was called to iden-

tify the body but in CID circles, it is believed without

any doubt that it was Chandrshekhar Azad.

During the time of postmortem, there was armed

police guards and two magistrates. The dead person

was a Brahmin and hence a newly recruited Brahmin

policeman was called from the Police Lines who lifted

the body on to the lorry. The body was heavy and hence

could not be put on a stretcher. This was kept on the

second lorry. There were armed police accompanying

the trucks. After this, under the supervision of

Abdulsamad, Police Inspector, both the trucks got ready

to go towards the river. In the meantime, Purushottam

Das Tandon arrived. There were some Congressmen

too with him. He wanted to see the body and said, the

relatives of Azad have come. In between, the lorries

started. Magistrate Kadri asked Tandon to meet the

District Magistrate. The fact that the body was being

taken was kept secret. The first lorry went towards

George Town and from there via Stanley Road went to

Rasulabad Ghat where all preparations for the last rites

were done. When a Brahmin was doing the last rites,

some people were searching in Triveni Ghat. The Mag-

istrate told Tandon he did not know where the last rites

were to be performed and the Inspection gave them

the name of Triveni Ghat.

The person who came in the morning from Banaras

and identified himself as Azad’s relative was named

Shivinayak Mishra. He was also a Congress worker. In

the evening meeting he said that he had been to the

District Magistrate to collect Azad’s body. District mag-

istrate asked him to go to the superintendent of Police.

Mishraji had been given permission by the Superinten-

dent of Police for performing the last rites of Azad. In

the meantime, Kamla Nehru and Purushottam Tandon

also reached there. After the last rites were over, Pandit

Mishra took the ashes to the city. According to a sug-

gestion by the students’ association, a rally was taken

out from the Khadi Bhandar. A black cloth was laid on

wooden planks on which the ashes were kept. The

planks were carried on the shoulders of people. Going

through the city, the rally reached the park. The ashes

were scattered all over the city. Under the supervision

of the students’ association, and the chairmanship of

Mohanlal Gautam, a meeting was organized. Shri

Gautam was the head of the students’ association. The

reporters of ‘Bhavishya’ searched the location of the

incident the next day. The tree behind which Azad had

shed his life was heavy with flowers. In a number of

places on the tree, people had inscribed the name of

Azad. It is said that even the soil from the area was

taken by the college boys in memory of Azad.

26 February: On the death anniversary of Savarkar

When Savarkar got certain that he had to bid adieu

to London and had to part from his friends here, he

controlled the feelings that emerged in his heart.

On 29 June 1910, the then home secretary of the

English empire, Winston Churchill, who became the

Prime Minister in time and worked constantly to harm

the Indian independence movement, he ordered Savarkar

to be sent home, and just as Aurangzeb sighed in relief

after imprisoning Shivaji, the British government too

sighed relief after they put him on the ship to India.

Finally the day arrived. On Friday, 1st July 1910, the

HMS Moriya set out on its historic trip of taking Savarkar

from London to India. With the intention of avoiding

any problam that may come up, the ship did not go

through the regular route through France. With an

importent inside it, the ‘Moriya’ sailed ahead, playing

with the ocean waves, when suddenly its pride was hurt.

There was some problem with the engine and near the

Port of Marseilles in France, it had to undergo repairs

and instead of going straight, it had to go towards

Marseilles. At last on 7 July 1910, the ship touched the

Marseilles port.

On 29 June when Churchill gave orders to send

Savarkar back to India, the secret service of the France

government was also given prior notification by tele-

gram about the sea route. Along with it, there was also

a warning that the ship carried a ‘very important pris-

oner’ to India who had a number of revolutionary friends

in France who might try to help him escape. Most prob-

ably the Bristish government had some kind of premo-

nition, to have informed the France government.

The prisoner Savarkar was accompanied by Scot-

land Yard’s Inspector, I. Jone Parker, and assistant

Police superintendent of Bombay Police, Pawar, along

with ten of their security officers. When the ship reached

Marseilles, the Police Commissioner of Marseilles,

Henry Lebaliyas, met Jone Parker and showed him the

letter sent by the London Police Commissioner to the

Police Chief in Paris. They

exchanged greetings and

news and the Police commis-

sioner assured Parker of all

help required.

Can anyone imagine that a person, a prisoner, with

his hands tied with handcuffed and tied to a pillar will

be able to say anything? However, Savarkar was not

just taking part in normal conversation but was telling

jokes to make everyone laugh. He was narrating his

memories and fascinating them and on this occasion

too he was only telling stories of the great revolutions

around the world and freedom struggles around the

world. Savarkar was trying to impress upon the co-pas-

sengers that freedom fighters should be not treated with

cruelty but with sympathy.

From 1st to 7th July, this was the routine followed by

Savarkar. The ship stopped but Savarkar’s thinking did

not stop. He was planning to somehow escape from

there. From the Port hole, he could see the ocean be-

low. He kept thinking whether his friends got his mes-

sage or not. Have they made plans to free me? Will

they be able to free me? It was on these thoughts that

Savarkar passed his time.

Marseilles was that place, on which songs were writ-

ten that helped to win the revolution. By some quirk of

fate, it was to this very Marseilles that the ship carrying

Savarkar arrived. He wondered whether nature and the

sea were doing all this to help him escape. It was night

and Savarkar had many questions running across his

mind as he lay down. Many thought waves were being

tossed around in his head. His co-passengers were sleep-

ing but how could Savarkar sleep? In Savarkar’s mind,

there were scenes being played of the escape of Krishna

from the prison of Kansa, escape of Shivaji from the

prison of Aurangazeb, etc. Overhead was the free sky

and below was the vast ocean and by observing them

he thought, how can anyone be a prisoner between the

Page 46: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 46

two of them?

It was dawn and he was still thinking. His thoughts

started to focus. It was as if mother India was telling

him, “Run, run this is the right time, my beloved child!

I do not want you to hang from the hangman’s noose.

My child! Think of Krishna, Shivaji, Napoleon and Alba.

Run, run! This is the time. You are no mouse that can

be trapped so easily. You are the leader of a revolution-

ary group. If not now then never.”

It was morning. Parker was not fully awake.

Savarkar told Parker that he wanted to go to the toilet.

Parker told th officer near him to take Savarkar to the

toilet. Two head constables, Mohammed Siddiq and

Singh kept watching him. Singh was peeping in the door.

Savarkar locked he door from inside. Even then it was

possible to look through the glass. This glass was in-

stalled as a special precaution for Savarkar.

Savarkar did not have any time to waste. At this

time, his work was going exactly according to plan at a

fast rate. He removed his night gown and placed it over

the glass so that no one can see him from outside. Tak-

ing off his sacred thread, he measured the circumfer-

ence of his body and then he measured the diameter of

the hole through which he had to go down to the sea.

As soon as the measurement were done and he got to

know how much he would have to squeeze his body, he

applied soap on himself in the blink of an eye and jumped

at the port hole. As soon as he entered the port hole, he

was suddenly splashed in the water. He shouted in a

loud voice, “The Goddess of Freedom! All glories to

you!”

It was Savarkar’s bad luck that a police officer had

seen him. He tried to open the toilet door but it was

closed from. He shouted, “Fugitive! Fugitive!”. There

was a rush all over the ship. From everywhere inside

voices could be heard saying, Catch him, beat him.

People were running all over. Savarkar could hear bul-

lets raining down. Some people were running on foot.

This was the testing time for Savarkar’s swimming and

diving training. Savarkar dived inside water to protect

himself from the bullets. In this way, diving and swim-

ming, he reached the shore.

This ocean shore was not in England but within

French boundaries. On reaching the shore, he started

running when he saw French soldiers in front of him.

By this time, the voices from the ship shouting, catch

him, thief, thief, became all the shriller. He went up to

the soldiers and asked them to take him to a lawyer.

Savarkar did not know French and the soldiers did not

know English. Savarkar tried to explain it to him in bro-

ken French. Finally, he somehow understood and would

have taken Savarkar to a lawyer when the English sol-

diers running after him reached the place. Savarkar

wanted to run from there and take a ride but he had no

money and the soldiers had reached near him and held

him by the neck. Pulling him by the neck, he was taken

back to the ship.

This was clearly breaking of rules by the English

soldiers but who was there to listen? While Savarkar

was on French soil, the English could not make him a

prisoner. However, there was no friend of Savarkar

there. The British security authorities made him a pris-

oner again.

It was the bad luck of the nation and of Savarkar

that exactly at the time when Savarkar was taken pris-

oner again near the French soldiers, many of his friends

including VVS Iyer, Sardar Singh Rana and Madame

Cama, etc. were just about to reach the port with all

preparations to help him escape but when the nearby

Railway crossing was closed suddenly and they had to

wait for half an hour. This half an hour’s wait proved

meaningless. It was then that people gave him the title

of Veer Savarkar. It was this half an hour’s wait that

indirectly lead to Savarkar’s imprisonment for half a

century.

On the morning of 8th July, this fascinating story of

Savarkar’s courage spread across the seas. In this way,

all the newspapers of the world mentioned about India’s

independence. In a way, the news of the escape of

Savarkar through the port hole and his recapture spread

like wild fire in the jungle of newspapers and the sparks

were seen over the entire universe. People who thought

India to be a land of snake charmers and sages and

ascetics now opened their eyes wide, their ears stood

up and the entire world was stunned to see the bravery

of this young man.

Not only in England, but all over France, Germany,

Russia and America, in all small and big newspaper,

Page 47: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 47

this was front-page news and a number had also writ-

ten editorial on it. A number of letters also showed anger

at the British government. The newspapers compared

Savarkar with Mussolini and Garibaldi, and praised his

courage, sacrifice and renunciation. This attempt to

escape by Savarkar was not just unique and admirable

till that time but was far better and courageous than

attempts made by Churchill, De Valero and Subhash in

latter times. This is unique till day in the history of revo-

lution.

While Savarkar’s praises were being echoed across

the globe, the eyes of the British administrators were

red with embarrassment. The police in the ship had al-

most gone mad. They welcomed him back on the ship

with as many vile words as they could say, and finally

The effort to take ‘yoga’ to the last person is very much alive. Under the able guidance of Swami

Ramdevji Maharaj, every person directly or indirectly related with Patanjali Yogpeeth is involved in this

organization constantly. To help the intelligent class of people in India associate with this organization,

special yoga camps have been organized by Pantanjali Yogpeeth in Yog Gram, Haridwar, for doctors,

lawyers, chartered accountants, youth and ex-servicemen. Every representative from the above-mentioned

categories is being invited from the 600 districts to these special camps. In this regard, participants will

contact the Patanjali Yog Samiti and Patanjali Mahila Samiti at the district levels. At the same time, even

other individuals associated with the above-mentioned participants can come forward and visit the district-

level Yog Samitis and submit their names for the special camps. In these camps, only invited participants

and people whose names have been forwarded by the district committees can participate. To search for

patriotic and social-service minded youth from across the country, the teachers of Patanjali Yog Samiti are

requested to approach the NSS, NCC, etc. and for their doctor friends, they are requested to approach the

IMA, NIMA, and Ayurveda Mahasanmelan and to contact ex-servicemen, they are requested to approach

the district-level Armed Forces Welfare Board. In this way to gather participants from ex-judges and

advocates, the yoga teachers are requested to approach the district-level Bar Associations. Chartered

Accountants are being identified from 118 branches of their national-level association, ‘Institute of Char-

tered Accountants’.

they said, “God knows which seed gave rise to this

Savarkar friend.” From that point, a soldier with a loaded

revolver stood in front of Savarkar at all times. But

Savarkar was one who got worried. Even on this occa-

sion, he told the police officer very bravely, “Look, you

are taking me to a prison, but keep in mind that I will

still try to escape even now. If you want to live a happy

and peaceful life with your wife and children, then it

will be better for you not to insult me in any way and

nor touch me in any way. I have already burned my

house and I will not stop at anything to take revenge on

any insult to me, no matter what I have to do.

- Dr. PromilaMan is full of various strengths.

These various strengths, including mental,

physical, spiritual, etc. are all merged together

in him. It is by using these qualities that man achieves

success in his life. The journey of human life moves

ahead with valour, power, bravery, determination and

strength of opinions. When the strengths of unshakable

faith and belief are added to a complete man with all

the other strengths, then he can make successes out of

all great tasks. The RigVeda says:

vgfeUæks u ijk ftX; bn /ue~u e`R;os¿o rLFks dnkpuA

lksefeUuk lqUoUrks ;kprk olqu esa iwjo% l[;s fj"kk/uAA ½Xosn 10 48 5

I am Indra. I am never defeated. Death can never

destroy me. O producers of the Som Ras, worship me.

In my friendship, you will never be harmed.

All traditional opinions have taken birth in faith. When

our experiences are linked with faith, then the birth of

belief takes place there. When belief becomes strong,

then it can take us to our highest peak, no matter which

form that highest peak may be in, in the form of any

kind of progress.

The stronger the faith, the deeper the belief, the

nearer you will get to your aim, whether that aim be

material or physical health, be it spiritual because by

whatever name you call the Lord, your faith and belief

towards Him makes it stronger in that direction. The

Omkar form of the godlike man is got as a blessing

from that very faith and belief. In the Gita, god himself

has said,

;s ;Fkk eka izi|Urs rkLrFkSo HktkE;geAee oRekZuqorZUrs euq";k% ikFkZ loZ'k%AA vè;k; 4 KkuekxZA

Whosoever comes in front of me in whatsoever form,

I make him my own in that form. Hey Arjun! Man fol-

lows my path from all directions. In the Gita, Sri Krishna

says, whosoever will think of me in my different forms

and will always have belief on me, I too will sympathize

with the person.

Just as faith gives rise to respect, similarly a person

with doubt si life a weak wave in the ocean, which is

blown hither and thither by the wind. If spiritual strength

is added to belief, then it is possible to everything in life.

In The Bible, it says, “If you have within you as much

faith as a mustard seed, and you ask the mountain to

move, it will move.”

A person who believes does not admit defeat ever,

no matter how many obstacles come his way. He takes

rest only when he reaches his goal. The biggest ob-

stacles on the road cannot block his path.

If scientists did not have any faith on their work and

did not have belief on their research, then those research-

ers who helped life to progress so much, would not have

made any inventions. All the discoveries and inventions

are the result of man’s faith and belief. In a person full

of belief, there are three things that do important work.

These are: determination power, sharp thoughts and in-

human courage.

Belief is the biggest strength on the spiritual level. If

you have faith on God, then you will see God himself in

the vast expanse. God is only obtained by those who

have the belief that divine power exists in every dust

and every stone. Vishwaguru Swami Vivekananda de-

scribes the power of belief in this way: “The history of

the world is the history of a few men who had faith

upon themselves. It is belief that awakens the divine

powers inside us, and then man can do anything. When

a person loses faith on himself, he is immediately in the

clutch of death at that moment. First believe in yourself

and then on God. A handful of powerful men can turn

the world upside down. Always remember that there is

an entire universe inside each person.”

These words of Swami Vivekananda appear so true

and fitting when applied to Swami Ramdev and Acharya

Balkrishna. Today the entire world, not just India, have

deep faith and belief on the words of Swami Ramdev

and Acharya Balkrishna. It is this faith that is keeping

him away from deadly diseases and is making him rise

Page 49: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 49

in the mental, physical and spiritual level and is remov-

ing the feelings of caste, religion, community, etc. from

the heart and is helping make the person a noble citizen

of the nation.

If you have faith on pranayam, if you believe in

Ayurveda, then you will be able to kill the deadliest of

all diseases such as cancer. On the other hand if you do

not have faith on the treatment procedure of the best

doctor, then you will take a long time even to recover

from very small illnesses. The hidden diseases and hid-

den illnesses spread over the body reduce by them-

selves once you have faith. If you believe from the

depths of your mind that the particular disease in you

will get destroyed by itself, it surely will.

The following stanza from Rig Veda again fits Swami

Ramdev – “Such a person attains God whose heart is

free from doubt and whose heart if filled with belief.”

in rescuing people from dangers, are being required

the appeal letter that all the patriots along with

Patanjali Yogpeeth are appealing to the Indian gov-

According to Sankhyadarshan, Volume 6 Verse 16,written by Sage Kapila, ^izdkjkUrjklaHkoknfoosd ,o cU/%*false intelligence (ignorance-false knowledge) is the rootcause for bondage. About false knowledge, SagePatanjali clearly says in Yogdarshan, verse 5, that¶vfuR;k'kqfpnq%[kkukRelq fuR;'kqfplq[kkRe[;kfrjfo|k¸falseknowledge is when we believe the temporary to be per-manent, the impure to be pure, sorrow to be happinessand the unconscious to be conscious.

Maharshi Dayanand, in his third advice from Pune, calls the ‘sensual power’ to be false knowledge, thismeans only because of false knowledge, the soul getsattracted towards worldly pleasures and gets trappedin the cycle of life and death. Hence, one who is desir-ous of salvation should definitely try to always be care-ful against form, taste, smell, touch and words.

The scholars from the Vedic age used to protecttheir desire for salvation from being spoiled by sensualobjects. This was, however, during the middle age, at-tention was not given to this point and hence a numberof people on the path to goodness became controlled bytheir senses and still are.

In our country, a lot of discussion takes place onsalvation, In programmes organized in the name of spiri-tuality, speakers give a lot of advice on rituals-rites, medi-tation-penance, fasting, bathing in rivers and ponds, pil-grimage, idol worship, etc. but they do give special at-tention to false knowledge, in other words to protectionfrom sensual objects, whereas rites and rituals havenothing to do with salvation.

I go to the extent of saying – the person who isunder the control of his sense organs, might continuedoing pranayam, sacrifice, meditation, retention, and ful-fillment of Samadhi, but will never get salvation fromnature. That is a person who is totally involved in falseknowledge or sensual pleasures will never be able toescape from the cycle of life and death without pro-tecting oneself from such pleasures.

The root cause of restlessness in the world is again‘sensual pleasures’. It is for this reason that human bringsget involved in sins such as theft and armed robbery, adulteration in food items, cheating, giving and taking ofbribes, rape, and killing of living beings. People in con-trol of sensual pleasures spoil their world and the otherworld.

I know of such people who consider themselves con-nected to the Lord and like the common people alsomade an effort to enjoy sensual pleasures. Thus the

belief becomes strong that it is not easy to burn thesevalues and culture that have come down from genera-tion to generation.

According to my opinion, those who in reality wantto free themselves from this noose, they should protectthemselves from these five things. Now I will presentbefore you the effects and outcome of these five top-ics: form, taste, smell, touch and word.

Form: There are many things in this world that holdtheir own special positions in beauty, in other words theycaptivate the mind (attract the beholders towards them-selves), so much so that some very learned and medita-tive people have been affected by this.

We can know to what extent ‘form’ has tied us upby looking at the beauty-enhancing products availableobjects in the market. A lot of people nowadays arespending a lot of money and time on decorating thismortal body out of fascination of ‘form’. Clothes shouldbe worn to protect the body according to social norms, however because beautification has been given firstpriority by the sense of form, and artificiality has re-placed naturalness.

Varieties of clothes draw attention towards the form, and thus lead to lack of simplicity in the life of a personwho is under the control of his senses. This attractionof beauty even takes man towards sins like prostitution, adultery and incest. In ancient times, the precious metaland stones such as gold, silver, diamond, etc were usedfor health reasons and not with the intention of decorat-ing the body.

According to historical sources, it is known that beau-tification was part of Vedic life, that is, our ancestors ofthose times did love beauty, but were not fascinated byit. I do not consider anything perceived by the sensessuch as ‘form’ to be harmful, what is harmful is thepower of the senses. Hence, everyone who is desirousof salvation should definitely protect oneself from thisotherwise he or she won’t be able to escape from thecycle of reincarnation.

Rasa: According to my opinion, ‘Rasa’ is the stron-gest among all the five senses. Everyone, that is old, young, children, aged, Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya,Sudra, student, householder, retirees, ascetics, that is allhuman beings are tied by this. To get rid of this, specialeffort is required.

We see that with increasing age of the body, thepower of eyes, ears, etc. become weak, however, taste(tongue) continues to be strong till the last moment of

Kamlesh Kumar Arya ‘Agnihotra’

Page 51: Yog Sandesh Feb 09 English

` YOG SANDESH-ENGLISH ` 51

life. This is the reason why man hankers after fulfillingthe demands of taste.

The strength of this taste-sense is being proven bythe various foods, nutritious as well as non-nutritious,available today. It is because of this fascination for tastethat leads to the killing of millions of innocent living be-ings everyday. Majority of the diseases come aboutbecause of uncontrolled satisfaction of taste. It is be-lieved that the main reason of ill-health is indulgence oftaste.

To protect oneself from the sense of taste, studentsand ascetics of ancient India used to at whatever theygot as alms – they had no prior knowledge of what willthey get, from where and when. That is there was noquestion of getting food according to what their tastesdictate.

A very simple way to protect onself from this senseof taste is to eat food to live and for health and not forthe satisfaction of the tongue – ‘Eat to live, do not liveto eat’. Do not demand any food that is tasty for you,nor have any prior knowledge of the food that you willhave later.

Do not have too many dishes at the same time be-cause strength is not got from eating but from digest-ing. In other words, do not eat a lot – ‘Eat less, digestmore’. Eating foods with opposite nature harm the bodyso take care to have less variety of food on your plate.

Smell: For the ties of the sense of smell, uncount-able flowers and other good-smelling substances aredestroyed everyday and obstruct the path of air purifi-cation. That is the demand for ‘itar’ and perfumes an-nihilate a number of flowers that are beneficial for health.

Luxury-loving people used perfumes and scents asthe outcome of their attraction towards the sense ofsmell. Perfumes are not harmful, what is harmful is thefascination for consumption of such products. Just aspeople attracted by the sense of taste tend to eat a lotto satisfy the tongue, so do people who are attracted bythe sense of smell use a lot of scented products.

In ancient times, flowers were not plucked. Flowersthat fell down from the plant naturally were used forpreparing garlands, hair pieces, sacrificial offerings, etc.Our Vedic tradition does not hold plucking of flowers ingood stead.

The purification and scenting of the atmosphere bylighting sacrificial fires is considered necessary forhealth. The smell of floral offering does not tie downanyone. I am again clarifying that no sense is bad, whatis bad is being under the control of the senses. There-fore, do not ever try to satisfy the sense of smell evenby mistake if you are on the path to salvation.

Touch: The sense of touch has under its controlalmost all men and women of this world. Associatedwith the skin, it is extremely difficult to gain victory over

this destroyer of the Brahmacharya vow. It is becauseof this that people fall ill and die before time.

This sensual power destroys the intellect of every-one. Men and women under its control cross the limitsof ideals and sobriety. It is as an outcome of the ties of‘touch’ that people move towards a libertine attitude.

The strength of this sense makes people character-less, and because of it, many men and women lose theirpower of reasoning and destroy themselves. Most ofthe people know very well for themselves how danger-ous the fascination for touch is.

According to my opinion, it is necessary that a per-son who wants to attain goodness to pay special atten-tion to self-mortification. They need to avoid ‘touch’ towhatever extent possible. They should take precautionssuch as avoiding asanas that are highly ticklish, as wellas beds, wearing loose clothes, etc.

Words: The effect of word is also no less. It is a

proven fact that poets and orators spellbind the audi-

ence by their words. We see in our daily life – with the

use of words, strangers become friends and friends

become strangers. Words are helpful both in uniting and

dividing. It can be the cause for friendship and enmity.

Word has a very important role in bringing peace or

restlessness to the family, society, nation and the world.

Everyone knows that bitter words lead to destruction

while sweet words lead to goodness.

A person who is tied down by words cannot hope to

attain divinity. Manu Maharaj has written – “In the world

of renunciation, one should move away from praise as

if it is poison and lick up criticism as if it is nectar.” It is

also very difficult to free oneself from the inactivity of

words.

One who becomes sad or happy by hearing harsh or

soothing words cannot ever become free because kind

words will bring about passion and unkind words will

bring about hatred. Hence, one who is desirous of sal-

vation should be attracted by words. Yes, it is very nec-

essary to pay attention to beneficial words because

words of goodness are not a cause for bondage and on

the other hand is helpful in attaining salvation.

One who is on the path to freedom should not have

any desire to hear praise for oneself. Admirers do not

help in development.

Essence: Just as a skilful doctor diagnoses the dis-

ease before treatment and then gives medicine to the

sick person, similarly it is intelligent to first find out the

reason for the attachment of the soul and then move

ahead for salvation. According to Maharshi Dayanand,

the cause of bondage of the soul is sensual power.

Hence, one who is desirous of salvation should try to

protect oneself from deterioration by the senses, and

not run away from home.

In some ancient times, Sage Angira had given knowl-

edge on the aforementioned theories. This cannot be

read by an individual without the power of determina-

tion.

This Upanishad, while describing worldly wisdom

and supreme knowledge, says that work-related

branches such as sacrifices, etc form worldly wisdom

– these cannot be used to obtain Supreme Knowledge,

knowledge-related braches such as deep devotion on

the Eternal Lord, etc are the only way to obtain Divine

Knowledge. And in reality, worldly wisdom is non-

knowledge and only divine knowledge counts because

only from supreme knowledge one gets divine wisdom.

The world is propagated by Brahma or the Supreme

Lord – what does this mean? How does this propaga-

tion take place? On this, it has been said – just as a

spider spins a web by taking out the substance from

within itself. The web that a spider spins is taken out

from within itself, from itself, not from its element or

consciousness. The Supreme Lord also uses His body,

and nature is His body, to create this world. On this

concept of duality, there are two birds that live in the

tree of nature. This point of view, that is in this

Upanishad, can be understood.)

Fats, vitamins, minerals, salt, protein, carbohy-

drates, etc. have extremely important roles in our life.

In a way, all substances are necessary for a healthy

life. All these impart strength to our body. Even though

each is equally important, protein occupies the high-

est level of importance. Children obtain requisite

growth only because of protein. It is protein that builds

elements in our bodies. Proteins contain hydrogen,

sulphur, carbon, phosphorus and oxygen along with a

high quantity of nitrogen.

Protein is obtained from the following:

v Milk, curd, pulses, rice, paneer, etc.

v Products with soyabean, peas, Bengal gram, pea-

nuts give us lot of protein.

v Groundnut oil has 50% protein.

v Soyabean has 40% protein quantity.

v Wheat bran also gives us adequate quantity of

protein. Let me tell you that wheat has 11.8 %

protein in it. Without bran, the quantity of protein

reduces.

v Green, leafy vegetables also supply some protein.

v Protein is also obtained from fruits. Apple has

0.3%, grapes have 0.8% and bananas have 1.35

proteins.

Usefulness of Protein:

Protein is very useful in our life.

v Bones get strength from proteins

v Both the old and very young need proteins.

v Protein is also very important for pregnant ladies

and lactating mothers.

v Growing children need a lot of proteins.

v Teeth and gums get strength from proteins.

v Cells become stronger with the help of proteins.

v Paralysis patients get a lot of relief with the help

of proteins.

v Proteins prevent a lot of major diseases from oc-

curring.

v Protein prevents rickets disease.

It is during the winters that a greater quantity of

protein can be taken. A lot of heat is given out by

proteins so it is better to reduce the intake of protein

during the summer season. It is also good to take pro-

tein in limited quantity during the rainy season.

the yogi cannot know which object, person or idea the

other person is feeling angry, etc. about. The reason for

this is that the mind under the yogi’s control at that

moment is not the intellect linked to the object of ha-

can be known, that is which person or object is causing

Appeal: O lord! My voice has been given to me for the utterance of your name. I continuously take

your pure names. I cannot do anything else with this voice that you have given me; any meaningless

word, any ungodly word, cannot be uttered by my voice. In every word that I utter, your rhythm is

present, you are present. O Indra! In this way, in various ways, I keep chanting only your names. If I do

not do this, how will I defeat my enemies? How will I be protected against them? It is only by uttering

your names continuously that I have gained victory over my many enemies and will do so. My biggest

enemy is ‘Arrogance’ and nowadays I am proud that your name has been my biggest weapon in defeat-

ing this enemy. Even when man has conquered all his other enemies such as passion, anger, etc. and has

reached a high level of spiritual growth, even then it is this arrogance, vanity and pride that do not leave

him. It is this that keeps fighting with the soul till even a little bit of false knowledge remains. O my Lord!

It is this that keeps me away from you till the end. When man reaches great heights, if not for anything

else, he feels arrogant about his non-identity and on being a pure soul. It is this arrogance that is capable

to completely destroying a man. O eternal valour! O eternal knowledge! This is why I continuously chant

your name, I go around keeping your holy name on my tongue. If I say “I did this” then immediately I join

my hands and your name leaves my lips. In this way, I protect myself from my great enemy. Your name

brings me down and as soon as I remember your name, I bow down my head and touch the ground. Then

I find that powerful arrogance disappearing in a moment, and he is not visible for hundreds of miles

around me; the entire world is full of you and I am at your feet. At that time, I become a small speck of

dust on the feet of your earthly body and I am able to experience the utmost supreme ecstasy. O Master!

‘Patanjali Yogpeeth’ pays tribute to the valour of

the martyrs

India is a country of brave youth. We are believers

in the slogan of ‘Live and let live’. However, we cannot

tolerate injustice.

After the independence of India, the terrorist attack

on India’s industrial capital, Mumbai, is the biggest

attack Entering the country via sea route, these man-

killers made the country’s heritage buildings such as

Taj Hotel, Oberoi hotel and Nariman house into pris-

ons and the hundreds of people, both Indian and for-

eigners, among which even women and innocent chil-

dren were present, were taken as hostages. Before tak-

ing these people as hostages, the terrorist wandered

through the crowded locations of Mumbai such as rail-

way stations, markets, etc. and opened random fire on

innocent bystanders. So much so that they did not even

leave hospitals alone.

In exactly opposite circumstances, the way our brave

soldiers took revenge on these terrorists without wast-

ing any time, and gave up their lives to preserve the

honour of the nation, is without precedence. ‘Patanjali

Yogpeeth’ salutes their brave spirits.

The families of the martyrs of this terror attack were

honoured on 15 December 2008 in New Delhi’s Pragati

Maidan. Swami Ramdevji gave each of the bereaved

families a draft of Rs 5 lakh. On this occasion, the audi-

of the mourning families.

The father of Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was

present on the occasion, said that he was sorry that he

had just one son to sacrifice for the nation but now he
