Year 1 Home Learning – Wednesday 20th May 2020.

This is your home learning plan for today. Feel free to twist and change it to accommodate

to your family and home life. Some activities may be adapted for younger and older children

to join in. Please do as much or as little as you can. This is an unusual and stressful time, my

main priority is that you and your families are happy and healthy.

I would love to see or hear how you are getting on with your home learning, please email

pictures or comments to [email protected].

Here is a wake and shake video to get you started on your learning day:

Starter: Can you match the word to the picture?

Learning sound:

2

Can you remember the sound ‘i-e’? What other ways can you write the ‘i-e’ digraph?

Can you think of any words that contain the ‘i-e’ digraph? (i-e as in line)

Today’s i-e is a split digraph. The letters work together even when they aren’t written next to each other. The split digraph works by using an ‘e’ after the initial vowel to change the sound of the vowel. We call this a magic ‘e’

Instead of drawing a line or dot we draw a loop to join the letters that work together to make one sound. Like this:

Watch the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9JSTYL7vyc type into the search bar on youtube ‘Geraldine Giraffe learns /i-e/’

Can you read these 4 words containing the ‘i-e’ split digraph? Don’t forget to add your sound buttons onto the words to help. Can you decide which words are real or nonsense?

3

Can you write 2 words that contain the ‘i-e’ split digraph? (fire, bike)

Can you read this sentence and draw a picture to match the sentence?

4

Can you now think of any other words containing the ‘i-e’ split digraph and use them in a silly sentence? (slide, wire)

___________________________________________________________________ Plenary: Can you read the postcard below and spot the ‘i-e’ phonemes?

Writing 30

minutes

Wednesday English – It is story writing day! You have now done so many activities to help you write your story. Today I would like you to just focus on the introduction and the build-up part of the story. You will need to use your plan to help write the story. Make sure you orally say your sentences before you write them. I also find it useful to count the words in the sentence on my fingers before writing so I don’t forget any. Below is a tool kit to help you with your writing. Remember stories are really exciting so don’t forget adjectives like you used to describe your scene and character. You might like to think about the opening sentence to your story too. Is it morning, afternoon or night? You might like to start by describing that. ‘It was a dark, cold night in Winter.’ (At the bottom of this home learning is a lined template if you would like to use it).

Can you practise writing these words using pre-cursive letters? Some of them are tricky so you will need to sound them out and read them first.
