Hunt wins BBC

award.. again! Lee Hunt’s memorable lob against Newtown was

chosen as BBC Wales’s Welsh Goal of the month in

January.

Former Wales international captain Kevin Ratcliffe

chose Hunt’s effort on Friday night’s Sport Wales

programme. It is the second time that Hunt has won

the award following a wonder-strike at Newtown

earlier in the season.

The competition has now been held for four months

and goals from the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier

League have won on each occasion.

Ymdrech gofiadwy Lee Hunt yn erbyn Y

Drenewydd enillodd wobr ‘Gôl y Mis’ ar raglen

Sport Wales (BBC Cymru) nos Wener.

Cyn gapten Cymru – Kevin Ratcliffe oedd y beirniad

a dyma’r eildro i Hunt ei hun ennill y wobr wedi

iddo sgorio foli wych yn Y Drenewydd yn

gynharach yn y tymor.

Mae’r gystadleuaeth hon wedi cael ei chynnal ers

pedwar mis bellach – a goliau o Uwch Gynghrair

The stuttering start to Phase Two continues with the

weekend’s entire programme washed out.

To add to the backlog, the Welsh Cup 4th

Round match

between Holywell Town and Newtown AFC was also

postponed leaving the Bangor City v Newtown match on

Friday in the WPL having to be re-scheduled as the

playing of the Welsh Cup match takes seniority.

Clubs have moved quickly though to re-arrange the

matches off. Rhyl welcome Airbus on Monday night while

Afan Lido will entertain Aberystwyth on Tuesday evening

whilst Prestatyn will visit gap Connah’s Quay also on the

same night.

The Bangor City v Airbus UK Broughton clash will now

take place on Tuesday 25th

February.

Following the delay caused by Aberystwyth Town’s

appeal a full set of fixtures has now been published and

can be found on page six. But even this is now not

complete due to weather postponements and Newtown’s

current lack of progress with their Welsh Cup tie.

Dependent on Welsh Cup progress of the remaining WPL

clubs the vacant dates for the remaining two pre-final

rounds will come in handy to catch up on fixtures.

Response to Aberystwyth Town’s

Statement.

The Football Association of Wales is aware of the

statement made on Aberystwyth Town’s website and will

respond accordingly in the next issue of the Welsh Premier

Times.

CLUB NEWS

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN www.atfc.org.uk Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of Aberystwyth Town Football Club Limited will take

place at the John Charles Lounge, Park Avenue on Wednesday 19th February at 7.00pm. Followed by an

Extraordinary General Meeting to consider membership of the Company and a possible planning application

relating to the Park Avenue Stadium..

BANGOR CITY www.bangorcity.co.uk

Welsh hurdling legend Colin Jackson is visiting Bangor City Community

Sports’ After School Football Club at 4pm on Thursday 20 February to see the

club in action and to talk about the importance of volunteering in sport.

After having a go at volunteering himself, Colin will hold a Q & A session for

participants, parents and others interesting volunteering at 5pm to which we

look forward to welcoming you.

Colin is a supporter of the sports volunteering charity Join In, which was

created out of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to promote

volunteering opportunities in community sport.!

NEWTOWN AFC www.newtownafc.co.uk Last weekend the football calendar was again left drenched with yet more postponements being made across

England and Wales.

The previous week our match against Holywell bit the dust at 10.30am on Saturday morning, and that saw us

having to travel to North Wales this weekend to try and make it third time lucky.

Because of the two postponements we now head up to North Wales in a bid to continue the run and face either

Monmouth Town or Porthmadog if we win at the weekend.

And after the two called off games I seem to have been writing the same old column over the past few weeks, and

the record needs changing.

But I don't feel the rest of the season will be the same old thing, with an exciting period approaching for the

Robins.

If we win the Welsh Cup we have the most favourable draw in the next round, and then it's into the business end,

when anything can happen. A Welsh Cup success two years after finishing bottom of the league would be an

unbelievable feat. In addition to that, the top six is another bonus, and something with so much optimism for the

club.

As far as most sides are concerned the top two is to be contested between TNS and Airbus. But from third to

sixth, it's anyone's game. And a few wins strung together, like that 20 game stretch that Newtown had, then it

could be a third placed finish. But that is a long way off so we will have to wait and see.

As the transfer window has now slammed shut I would like to personally welcome new signing James Bloom to

Mid Wales. He follows Lance Jones and Neil Mitchell through the door and I'm sure he will do well here.

All the best to the new boys and lets hope the game this weekend does go ahead.! Jonny Drury.

The Welsh Cup tie at Holywell has been postponed for the third time following a pitch inspection . The atrocious

weather this week has led to the pitch becoming waterlogged.

Page 8: WPT14 - 34

The Officials from both clubs are consulting with players as to availability for a new date. Newtown will be able

to travel to North Wales on Tuesday evening, but would mean a short break before Friday night's game away to

Bangor in the League.

Newtown Manager, Chris Hughes had made contingency plans for Saturday and played a friendly match at

Telford on a 3G surface. They lost 1-2 to Wellington Amateurs where Chris Hughes took every player in his

squad to Shropshire apart from Max Penk who was away with work. And the Newtown manager experimented

with his side, playing every player, and trying out different formations in three 30 minute periods.

“The run out was the important thing rather than the result” said a club spokesperson. “The squad had been idle

for three weeks so some match practice was sorely needed”

PORT TALBOT TOWN www.porttalbottown.co.uk FIVE Port Talbot Town players form part of the Wales Academy Under-18 squad that will play a double header

against Ireland.

Conah McFenton, Sam Pearson, Connah Troy, Keiran Williams and Samuel Bell are all in contention to feature in

Waterford on Saturday and Tuesday.

Steelmen head of youth Mark Pike, who is also Wales academy Under-18 manager, said: “This will be a fantastic

and enjoyable experience for the young lads.

“All the players came through a training camp recently and I for one can not wait for the fixtures to see how our

lads perform on the big stage.”

PRESTATYN TOWN www.ptfconline.co.uk Town are now inviting applicants to apply for the role of Chairman of Prestatyn Town Football Club. The role has

risen after previous Chairman Phil Merrick decided to step down at the end of last year due to personal

circumstances.

They would like the applicant to have a sound business knowledge, experience in running a business and be able

to be hands on in moving the club forward to challenge in the Welsh Premier League and to make our club the

centre of the community in Prestatyn.

Prestatyn Town Football Club has a strong and devoted committee, a great set of fans who are willing to support

the club and a manager and team who are always willing to go that extra mile. We have a thriving Academy,

Social club is busy and want to build on that.

If you believe you are the right candidate and are willing to take on the role or want to know more, then please

contact our General Manager Gareth Owens on 07803750728 or email [email protected].

THE NEW SAINTS FC www.tnsfc.co.uk Three TNS players have been called up to the Wales Academy Under 18’s Squad.

Goalkeeper Ryan Edkins, left back Adam Davies and the prolific striker, Taylor James, have all been called up by

manager Mark Pike.

Wales will be taking on the Republic of Ireland in a Friendly International Challenge Match on Monday the 17th

of February 2014.

The match will be played at Ozier Park, Waterford, Republic of Ireland.

All three of the TNS players are part of Steve Evans’ successful TNS Under19’s squad that are currently top of

the Under 19 Welsh Premier League.

THE LAST WORD from Gwyn Derfel Another week – another washout! And another headache regarding fixtures in both the

with the clubs regarding tweaking some fixtures to avoid long distance midweek

travelling for our teams at this crucial stage of the season.

We haven’t of course had much to smile about during the past week but watching Sport

Wales on Friday evening cheered me up at the end of another hugely frustrating seven

days. Right at the end of the programme – Kevin Ratcliffe chose Lee Hunt’s great lob

against Newtown as January’s Welsh Goal of the Month – echoeing Osian Roberts’s

choice on Sgorio! This popular feature on the BBC Wales show has been running for four

months now and goals from our National League have won the award on each occasion –

beating all efforts from Cardiff / Swansea/ Wrexham / Newport players as well as any

other individual efforts by Welshmen around the globe. Let’s hope that this latest feather

in the cap of our League will help change a few people’s misguided and outdated

perceptions of the WPL.

What we need more than anything of course is some better weather so that the quality

players in our League can showcase their talents once again..

Y GAIR OLAF gan Gwyn Derfel

Wythnos wlyb arall – mwy o ohiriadau yn y Cynghrair a’r Cwpan – a mwy o gur pen i mi

ac ysgrifenyddion y clybiau wrth gwrs – heb sôn am y rheolwyr, darlledwyr, chwaraewyr

a chefnogwyr!

Na does dim llawer o bethau wedi llwyddo codi gwên ar fy ngwyneb yr wythnos hon – er

i un digwyddiad nos Wener fy mhlesio’n fawr.

‘Roeddwn yn gwylio rhaglen Sport Wales ar BBC Cymru ac ar ddiwedd y darllediad

cadarnhawyd bod Kevin Ratcliffe wedi dewis ymdrech Lee Hunt yn erbyn Y Drenewydd

fel ‘Gôl Gymreig Orau Mis Ionawr’. Hon oedd hoff gôl Osian Roberts o’r mis hefyd fel y

cyhoeddodd ar Sgorio’r wythnos flaenorol.

Wrth gwrs bod ymdrech gofiadwy Hunt i’w chanmol a’i hedmygu ond beth gynhesodd y

galon yn fwy na dim oedd y ffaith bod y pedair gôl fuddugol ers i Sport Wales lawnsio’r

eitem wedi dod o’n Cynghrair Cenedlaethol. Gobeithio wir y bydd y record 100% yma’n

erbyn holl goliau Caerdydd / Abertawe / Casnewydd / Wrecsam ac unrhyw unigolion

eraill o Gymru o gwmpas y byd yn dechrau gwneud i ambell berson sydd wedi bod yn

dilorni UGC-Corbett Sports yn ddi-sail ar hyd y blynyddoedd – ail ystyried eu safbwynt

sigledig.

Beth sydd ei angen wrth gwrs ydi ‘chydig o dywydd braf fel y gall y chwaraewyr niferus

o safon yn ein Cynghrair ddechrau ardangos eu doniau unwaith eto.

Diolch am ddarllen.
