The youth oriented program was a recipient of an $800 Stewarts Holiday Match, which collected a record breaking $770,000 in funds from Stewart's customers. The funds are then matched providing over $1.5mm to more than 1,600 local children programs. For more than ten years, Battenkill Conservancy's OAT program has provided a fun and affordable hands on, water focused outdoor educational experience for boys and girls aged 11- 15 years old. Participants are introduced to water-safety skills, canoeing, fishing, river ecology, outdoor cooking skills and night sky identification. BkC has been working with the Greenwich Central School's STEM initia- tive to partner with teachers and help incorporate science into the curricu- lum. Exposing youth and their families to the watershed's recreational assets and provide science based environmental opportunities such as BkC's River Watch Discovery Kit promotes an active engagement in the river's stewardship. OAT's hands on, low student to counselor ratio limits the program to 14 participants while fees are kept intentionally low cover- ing only half of the program's actual costs. BkC's membership support, donations to its “I Wish I had a River” annual appeal and grants such as Stewarts Holiday Match make the program possible. For families inter- ested in signing up their children or to learn more about the program, visit www.battenkillconservancy.org or email [email protected].

Even though its a little early to get out in the vegetable garden, except for planting pea seeds, there are still important gardening tasks to tackle. Like other avid perennial gardeners, Ive been poking around my beds to see whos waking up. The first crocus is poking up and the daffodils and tulips wont be far behind. These signs of activity are welcome indeed. Even though its cool, its time to apply our fertilizer so, as the plants emerge from hibernation, nutrients will be waiting in the soil for them. Early feeding sets the stage for healthy plants all season long. Lawns, trees, shrubs and perennials all benefit from early feeding but which plant food is best for what? When you are out shopping for a lawn food, first consider the condition of your lawn. If your lawn is healthy and well established, youre looking for a regular high nitrogen lawn food. I recommend using a lawn food that provides nitrogen in fast AND slow release forms. You will often see bargain lawn foods advertised. This lawn food will be cheap but may not be a bargain. Often the nitrogen in these cheap lawn foods releases so quickly that the grass plants cannot utilize it. Its like getting a weeks worth of food served to for supper on Monday and then going hungry the rest of the week. It doesnt make sense for you or your lawn. Look on the bag to see if the nitrogen is derived from more than one or two sources. Lawn foods that are formulated to be fast and slow release, they cost a bit more but youll be better off in the long run since you will feed less often. Each year I side dress my perennials with additional food. The food I choose for them will be slow release and fairly balanced with slightly more phosphorous for more flowers. Espoma Flower-tone is my current favorite. There are other quality products available. I again want to avoid cheap, fast release fertilizer. To feed the perennials, Ill roughen up the soil around each plant being sure to stay far enough away from the crown to avoid damaging the roots. Ill sprinkle the fertilizer sparingly and according to the directions on the label around the plant being careful not to get any on the crown. Then Ill lightly mix the food into the soil with my trusty cultivator and then water. For trees and large shrubs, an easy way to apply nutrients is by pounding in some of those tree food spikes that are made of compressed fertilizer. When you go to the garden center, youll notice that there are different formulas for different plants. The spikes for evergreens and shade trees are higher in nitrogen and those for fruit tree are higher in phosphorus to enhance fruit production. You may have large, flowering shrubs like lilacs that you want to feed with spikes. The fruit tree spikes, with their higher phosphorus formula would make them appropriate for use on flowering shrubs as well. Be careful to follow the directions when using fertilizer spikes. They should be driven into the ground AWAY from the trunk or stem of the plant youre feeding. The tiny roots that take up the nutrients are about the same distance from the trunk as the outermost branch tips. For trees, its easy to figure out where to place the spikes. Simply walk away from the trunk until you are standing under the outermost branch tips and pound in the spikes at that circumference. How many spikes youll need to use is determined by the diameter of the trunk. There are directions on the package. Follow them. More isnt necessarily better. If you use too many spikes or place them too close to the trunk, you may do more harm than good. For smaller shrubs and perennials, youll want to use a gentle, granular food. I like the Espoma products. You can pound holes around small shrubs (under the outermost branch tips) and pour the appropriate amount of plant food into them. When in doubt, less is best. On the perennials, Ill dig a shallow trench well away from the crown of the plant and apply a modest amount of gentle Espoma Flower-tone plant food. Follow the recommendations on the package and, again, when in doubt, less is best. If you can get out there at the first opportunity and get your nutrients into the soil early, your landscape plants will be able to take advantage of them and have the best season possible. Last of the Piggly Wiggly Pups

    Maddy

    Benelli

Maddy is a female lab mix who is probably 4 - 5 months old. She was dropped off on a

country dirt road 4 weeks ago. Luckily it was right near one of our rescue fosters. So she

was able to get into safety She gets along great with other dogs and children. She has been

dewormed and given first puppy vaccinations. Maddy has a sweet easygoing personality.

She weighs about 25 lbs and will probably be around 40 lbs when grown. She will make a

    good family pet.

This little guy ended up on death row of a high kill shelter. He was very depressed at being in the shelter until one of our rescue

coordinators saw him and got him out. He is a little lover. He is a bulldog mix and about 14lbs at 12 weeks. He has been vetted and

given his first shots and wormed. His foster mom says he is a sweetie and gets along with other dogs. He will make an excellent com-

    panion for some lucky family.

These two are the last of the litter that were found at the Piggly Wiggly store down south.

They were still at the spay/neuter clinic and are now coming up to find their forever homes. They are both beautiful and wonder-

ful pups. They are about 14-16 weeks old, have been vet checked, up to date on shots

    and wormed.

boy Scruffy. Scruffy has spent a lot of rough years outside....but he is a movie star at heart...look how nicely he posed for his pics! We have no idea what Scruffy has had to live through but we do know he must

have been a house pet either lost or abandoned to fend for himself for years. Although Scruffy has many

signs of living a tough life outside he is nothing but a big sweet baby and deserves an indoor life of spoiling and luxury. He is loving and

affectionate, laid back and very easy going. Please consider giving this boy a forever home. Scruffy is a male adult kitty about 4-5 years old. He is neutered, healthy, up to date on his

shots and negative for FIV and FeLV.

some point in the cold Olivers tail probably got frostbite and the last one-third fell off. Hes still got a pretty decent looking healthy shorter tail now! In March Oliver got to move inside to a HOPE foster home and is just absolutely loving being back indoors. Oliver is a big sweet baby of a boy. He likes to rub his head up on you and give little head butts. Oliver is very gentle and easy going - hes content just to lounge on his bed or hang out in the kitchen with is foster family. Oliver is great with the other cats and dogs in the house. Please consider giving this loving

boy a forever home to live out the rest of his long days in comfort.Oliver is aged somewhere between 7-10 years and is in perfect health.

He is neutered, up to date on his shots and negative for FIV/FeLV.

HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME IN 2015(NAPSI)The American dream of homeownership may not be as hard to attain as manypeople seem to fear. A few intriguing facts and hints can help.

The FactsWhile existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtors an-nual Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of first-time buyers recentlyfell to its lowest level (33 percent) in nearly three decades. Many first-time buyers expe-rience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including difficulty saving for a downpayment and tight credit conditions.

The HintsConsider these tips: Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can re-place the local knowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to first-time buyers as they navigate the complex home buying process.According to the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in thepast year began their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their homethrough an agent. Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they alsouse their unparalleled local market knowledge and resources to help close the deal forbuyers and sellers. Meet with a lender to determine how much you can afford. Last year, the median pricea first-time buyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you dont have thatamount of cash lying around. Thats why 95 percent of first-time buyers who bought ahome in the past year financed their purchase.Find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check yourcredit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount ofmoney youre qualified to borrow at a specific interest rate. Dont forget to consider theother costs of homeownership, such as taxes, insurance and utilities. Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 percent of first-time buyers got a single-family home in the suburbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near publictransportation.Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Re-altor focus on the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who representsellers to zero in on homes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.Keep this advice in mind and you may soon find yourself waking up in the home of yourdreams.

GREAT APPS DRIVERS CAN USESmartphones are a convenient tool that few people can now imagine living without.Smartphone-toting moms and dads know they always have a camera on hand to takequick snaps of their youngsters, while foodies rely on their smartphones to find nearbyrestaurants or read reviews of eateries while out on the town. But drivers also can benefitfrom smartphones thanks to the following apps.

Waze: Commuters who download Waze to their smartphones may wonder how theyever navigated their daily treks to the office without this useful app, which allows driversto share real-time traffic and road information with their fellow motorists. Drivers can useWaze to save time and gas money and make their commutes less stressful. Drivers whouse Waze can actively report accidents and find the least expensive gas prices postedby fellow drivers in their community.

GasBuddy: While fuel prices dipped in late 2014 and stayed low into 2015, todays driv-ers are still conditioned to find the most affordable gas prices around. The GasBuddyapp makes it easy to do just that, as users can share gas prices in their community, which fellow drivers can then peruse to find the most affordable filling stations along theirdriving routes. Drivers can even enter their city, ZIP code or postal code to find the cheap-est gas in their vicinity.

AAA Mobile: AAA members can use the AAA Mobile app to access AAA services ontheir smartphones. Such services include trip planning, member discounts and roadsideassistance. The app also includes a mobile version of the motor clubs popular TripTikTravel Planner, which makes it easy for smartphone users to find club-approved hotels, restaurants and attractions. Drivers can even create and share trip itineraries betweentheir desktop and mobile devices.

Insurance: Nearly every auto insurance provider now offers its own mobile app to policyholders. Such apps may allow drivers to pay their bills, view their insurance identificationcards, peruse their policies, arrange for roadside assistance and report claims amongother things. These apps put your auto insurance provider at your fingertips and canmake it much easier to manage your policy.

DID YOU KNOW?Insuring multiple vehicles and/or drivers on an auto insur-ance policy may prove cheaper than having each of thosedrivers and vehicles insured separately on multiple poli-cies. Thats because insurers typically offer bulk rates topolicy holders willing to insure several vehicles and/ordrivers on a single policy. But such discounts typically ad-here to guidelines that dictate eligibility. For example, ifthe head of a family wants to insure his or her children onthe same auto insurance policy he or she has, then thosechildren typically must list their parents home as theirlegal residence. Blood relations also may influence eligi-bility for multiple driver policy discounts. In general, onlyblood relatives or relatives by marriage can benefit frommultiple driver discounts. However, non-related motoristswho jointly own a vehicle may be eligible for discounts.
