KARNER BLUE BUTTERFLY WALKS AT WILTON WILDLIFE
PRESERVE & PARKWILTON - The second week of July will see the second brood of Karner blue butterflies emerging at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park. There are several trails in the Preserve & Park where you can observe these small blue but-terflies. The most accessible are at Camp Saratoga where the trail leaves from parking lot #1. The other trails are Old Gick Farm and Fox which are accessed from parking areas off of Route 50, just north of King Road. The Preserve & Park is home to the largest population of these endangered butterflies in the Northeast. There are several opportunities to take a guid-ed nature walk to look for the butterflies. These walks will take place on Thursdays starting on July 10 and continuing through the month of July. The walks will be offered twice a day, at 11:00 am and again at 4:00 pm. The walks leave from the parking area for the Old Gick Farm on Route 50 which is just under 4 miles past Wilton Mall. The walks should last about an hour and cover a mile of gently rolling terrain. The walks will not take place if there is rain. For more information about the walk and to pre-register, please contact the Park Office at 450-0321 or visit the website at www.wiltonpreserve.org.

Vegas
Jazz
Vegas is a 7-year old Boxer/Hound mix who is very sweet, very gentle, thoughtful, and well behaved. Because he loves being
around people, he wants to be wherever you are. Vegas is a big snugger and a little bit of a goof ball. He has perfect potty habits; he always waits until we take him outside to “go”. We are working
on introducing Vegas to other dogs. It would better for him to go to a home with older kids. Like all HOPE dogs, Vegas is neutered, up to
date on his shots, and micro-chipped.
Check out Fiona’s “Bette Davis Eyes” - a truly stunning 8 month old girl with bunny-soft fur. Fiona’s favorite thing is “window shopping” for birds and squirrels. When’s she’s not stalking the wildlife from behind glass she is typically napping (yes, in the window and probably dreaming of squirrel soup). Fiona is very
independent - happy to hang out on her own during the day she just wants a little bit of attention morning and night - except if you’ve got out the interactive toys which she absolutely goes
crazy for! Fiona would do best if she is adopted by a family with a quiet home and would do great with a kitty companion (and a window sill). Because she was born wild she is cautious to accept new humans into her personal space and will need a loving new family willing to earn her trust— the rewards once you win her over are great — a massive purr, bedtime sleeping companion and lots and lots of leg rubs. Fiona has lived with other cats
and dogs. If you have a busy life or work long hours this low-maintenance lady might be just the beautiful face to welcome you home each day. Fiona has been spayed, is up to date on all
her shots and tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV.
Fiona
Jazz is a senior male Labrador Retriever / Rottweiler mix. He is very sociable and loves to greet everyone on his outings. Jazz is good with cats and dogs. He has never met a tennis ball he didn’t
like and LOVES to swim, even leaving his beloved tennis balls behind for a chance to play in water. Jazz seems to be very good with
children, but as he has never lived with children, he would probably do better with older kids. Jazz is vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped. He qualifies for our Seniors program – a qualified senior
citizen (age 65 or above) may adopt a HOPE pet 7 years of age or older free of charge.

GET A GRIP -- TIPS FOR SAFER DRIVING ON WET ROADS
(NewsUSA) - It's that time of the year again -- time for wetter roads and, unfortunately, more accidents.
Russell Shepherd, a mechanical engineer for Michelin North America and self-proclaimed "tire nerd," has certainly earned his informal title as evident by his 15 years of driving in al-most every type of weather condition imaginable. Most con-cerning for him -- wet weather.
"Most people don't realize how much wet roads aff ect their driving," says Shepherd.
"When roads become wet, it takes longer to stop and more time to react, making it more important
than normal to pay attention to your car and other drivers."
So, what can the average driver do? Shepard suggests get-ting to the bottom of things fi rst -- with the tires. Here are some tips:
* Check all tires regularly for tread wear and pressure. Chang-
es in season and temperatures make it a good time to check both.
* Be cautious from the start. As soon as it starts raining, trac-tion can become negatively aff ected. It only takes a small amount of water to mix with oil and dust to create a slick surface.
* Find the right tire. A tire with a grip designed to handle wet roads, such as the new Michelin Premier A/S tire, can make a big diff erence. This tire has a unique rubber compound engi-neered to maximize traction, and two sets of grooves to help channel water away from the tires to maintain that traction. The second set of grooves is hidden when the tire is new, but emerges as the tire wears.
This distinctive design feature maintains the tire's ability to funnel water away, even when worn, which prolongs the life of the tire and enhances driver safety.
* Get in touch with your car. Take time to learn how your car responds on wet roads. Is the steering looser than normal? Are you sliding when you brake? Do you notice the ABS (An-ti-lock Braking System) kicking in? If so, your tires could be
losing their grip. Slow down and get your tires checked as soon as possible.
For more information about wet-weather driving and choosing the right tire for your car, visit www.michelin-man.com/.
MAINTENANCE PAYS
(NAPS)—Many drivers fi nd that if they want to make their car last, it pays to put it fi rst. Taking good care of your car means you are more likely to avoid problems, both now, while you’re driv-ing it, and later, when you sell it.
To improve the life of your vehicle and its price at re-sale, it’s a good idea to get it
serviced regularly. The car will not only run better, it will be h i g h -
lighted on a Carfax Report as a “well maintained” vehicle. Keep track of the service his-tory so you can prove you did the right thing to pro-spective buyers.
To help, you can get remind-ers about upcoming service from the free myCarfax mo-bile app. Subscribers also learn of any open recalls on their cars.

GPS IS NOT FOOLPROOF. A MAP STILL MAKES THE MOST
OF SUMMER TRAVEL (NewsUSA) - It's the season of sunshine and road trips -- and if you want to get the most out of your four-wheeled adven-ture, you better pack a map to go along with that electronic GPS.
"The best reason to keep paper maps in your vehicle, es-pecially on long road trips, is because GPS isn't always reli-able," says Cynthia Ochterbeck, editorial director of Michelin Travel Partner.
Confi rming this trend, a 2013 Harris Interactive survey of 2,200 U.S. drivers who use
GPS found that 63 percent say that the technology has led them astray at least once by pointing them in the wrong di-rection or creating complex, confusing and incorrect routes.
So, while it may seem that paper maps have gone the way of Atari's Pong, they are still just as important as ever -- not to mention many other benefi ts that you don't get with some GPS devices.
"One of the greatest characteristics of paper maps is that you get all of the details, [such as] points of interest," says Ochterbeck. "Plus, you don't risk getting lost when you lose the signal or the battery dies on your cell phone or GPS de-vice."
Another benefi t is that, in addition to printed maps pro-viding effi cient ways of understanding road networks that surround particular areas, the information is very reliable. Plus, new specialized maps, like Michelin's Zoom Maps, are aiming to enhance the paper map experience.
Most people recognize Michelin for its tires, but, unknown to many, it also has a 112-year history of creating maps and travel guides. In fact, it provided the maps that were used by the Allies for the D-Day invasion. Improving on this history, the new Zoom Maps off er seven regional maps for travel in the U.S., with the ability to zoom in on more detail in urban areas. In addition, the new maps have a "not-to-be-missed" event calendar for regions, in an easy-to-fold system so you don't have to unfold the entire map.
"Technology is great, but a printed map is one of the most important tools a traveler in an unfamiliar setting can have -- the battery doesn't die, it is easy to use, and it allows you to
make decisions on route changes if necessary," says Ochter-beck. "Even better, there are no roaming or data charges to worry about."

This is a great time of year for gardeners. In spite of the sluggish start, recent warmth
has our gardens leaping to life . There are home grown fl owers in vases in the living room,
dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial fl owers follow their blooming cycle
with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually
begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My an-
nual fl owers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from
mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to
well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beauti-
ful “frame” for the fl owerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the
hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and
vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went
quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that
are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspber-
ries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them
to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the.
All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their
show. Later, this show will include althea, The Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea are
gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double fl owering, I greatly admire the single
fl owering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their fl ower closely resembles that of the
tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single fl owering altheas weren’t avail-
able when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those.
Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders.
There are even varieties that have a bi-colored fl ower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as
well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in
nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on.
Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus
although the fl owers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground
to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus fl owers range in color
from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t
enough, the fl owers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town
since they are in fl ower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our
area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the
giant fl owers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately,
they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even
longer for a well-established clump.
If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be pa-
tient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show
any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my
yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the fi rst leaves appear on my althea and the
mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily
deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.
