Oral History ProjectWARREN COUNTY - The Warren County Historical Society will be conducting oral history interviews during the Rural Heritage Festival and Youth Fair at the Warren County Fair-grounds in Warrensburg, NY on August 10th. The Warren County Historical Society is searching for individuals who would like to participate and are specifically interest in talking with individuals who have some knowledge in three specific ar-eas: · World War II Memories: We are looking for individuals who have memories of The Home Front during WWII (1941-45). Do you remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the election of 1944, and FDR’s death? Also do you remember V-E Day and V-J Day, rationing, victory gardens, movies, songs, etc.? · Fairs in Warren County: We are interested in talking with individuals who remember the various County Fairs in Warrensburg – and perhaps other locations – through the 1960s. · Churches: We are looking for individuals who have an interest in the impor-tance of churches in the development of a community. It would be especially interesting to learn why a particular congrega-tion formed in a particular community, and what influence the people of the church had on the community, and the role of the church in creating a gathering place for people to meet for social events. If you are interested in participating in these in-terviews, you can call the Warren County Historical Society before August 10th (743-0734) to make arrangements to be interviewed.

Cal
Teddy
Sylvia
Sonya
Cal is a very nice 2-year old brindle mixed breed boy. Upon 1st meeting, he’s a very
nice boy. His foster says that he gets along well with both cats and dogs.
Teddy is a very sweet-natured, older Pomeranian but he is plenty perky!
He is thought to be anywhere from 8-10 years so he would be eligible for our
Senior to Senior program (free to a Senior Citizen). He is mostly blind but gets around fine and would be a great companion for
someone looking for a lovey buddy. Teddy was found in a dumpster!
Despite this cruelty he endured, he has a very friendly disposition, likes to be petted
and have his belly rubbed.
Sylvia is a 3 year old beauty. She is friendly, playful, and fun!
Sonya is playful, curious, and friendly. She is good with other cats in her foster mom’s house and also with the dogs. Sonya likes
to sleep in boxes and talk. For more adoptable pets and low cost spay/neuter info, Visit www.hopeanimalrescue.org

Female Veterans Need Your Votes To Win $250,000!SARATOGA SPRINGS - Saratoga RPC - VETHELP hopes to finish a wellness area in their transitional home for female veterans, who are nearly four times more likely to be home-less than non-veteran women. In addition to finishing their original project, they would use the funds from this contest to open a thrift store and training facility adjacent to their female home. This would be used to orient their female veterans to the workforce and allow them to earn wages to help further their independence. It would also assist them in developing the skills needed to re-enter the workforce once they “gradu-ate” from their program. Additionally, the Thrift Store would provide their organization with sustainable funding to continue their mission as a private nonprofit organization committed to ending veteran homelessness. Please vote at VETHELPNY.org or on Facebook search for Aprons in Action. We need help right now until the end of May. Vote every day.

Here we are with Memorial Day weekend upon us once again and there have been precious few days to pull weeds and catch up on all the planting we want to do. It seems that every time I can line up some free time with dry weather, I have to spend that time mowing the lawn. Assuming that it doesn’t rain, it looks like Memorial Day week-end will be the time to scramble to plant. Amusingly, this is really the time I’d be putting most of my “tropical” vegetables in anyway. .
Hopefullybythetimeyou’rereadingthis,I’llhavefinallygottenmytomatoesplanted and I’ll be just about ready to get my peppers in. Peppers are more sensitive to soil temperature than all the other vegetable we plant. Peppers won’t perform well until SOIL temperatures are 65 degrees or higher. If the season is cool, I’ll enclose them in what I call a “pepperdome’. This is just a cute name for four stakes that I’ll wrap with horticultural fabric right to the ground covering my little pepper transplants. This fabric will trap heat and hold heat around the peppers on cool nights. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, I’ll remove the “pepperdome” and let the peppers bathe in direct sun-light. I also like to cover the soil beneath my peppers with black plastic to generate even more heat. If the summer gets really hot, I can cover the black plastic with straw to keep the soil temperature under control. In September, when temperatures start dropping, I’ll brush the straw back to let the sun warm up the plastic and soil again. There’s a little saying I use to remind myself not to plant my peppers too early: PLANTING PEPPERS PREMATURELY POSTPONES THE PERIOD OF PRIME PRODUCTION but PRO-VIDING PEPPERS WITH PROTECTION PERPETUATES PROFUSE, PROLONGED PRODUCTION.
Now I’m going to give you my annual rant about a strange gardening habits that I just can’t understand. It drives me crazy when I see someone who’s spent a lot of time(andprobablymoneytoo)creatingabeautifulflowerbedorvegetablegardenwa-tering it with a lawn sprinkler or hand-held sprayer. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep from pulling off the road and giving them a “tune up”. I know that this is a habit borne of ignorance but it really isn’t at all good for the plants. Somehow the idea of spraying your plants with water seems “refreshing” and has a lot of appeal to people. Also, we’ve all seen those ads on TV that show the nice folks at some “mega warehouse chain” misting theflowers.WhileitcreatesalovelyvisualeffectfortheTVviewer, itisoneoftheworstpossible things you can do to your plants. Why?
Remember that plants absorb moisture and nutrients with their ROOTS to re-place moisture lost by the leaves through evaporation. When you wet the leaves, the plant isn’t able to grow until the leaves dry off. But this isn’t the worst of it! When you wet the leaves (especially in warm weather), you’re creating the perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and grow. Can anyone say “powdery mildew”?
Inthevegetablegarden, problemswithplantsthatproduceflowersbutneverset fruit can almost always be traced to “spray-watering”. Spraying the plants with water washesthepollenoutoftheflowers. Withoutthispollen, thebeescan’tpollinatetheflowers.Nopollen,nofruitorvegetables.
There are no good reasons to “spray-water” unless you’re shooting a commer-cial for one of those ignorant “mega warehouse chains” and there are many good reasons not to (cold water shocks the plants washes away pollen and promotes fungal diseases). As far as I’m concerned, the only acceptable way to water is to get the water into the soil whilewettingtheleavesandflowersaslittleaspossible. Soakerhosescandothisinpermanent beds but I usually use my trusty watering wand. You’ve all seen these at the garden center and you probably think it’s just a handy device for watering hanging bas-kets that are too high to reach. In reality, the purpose of these wands is to help you direct water down into the soil among your plants without having to bend over with the hose. My watering wand is always attached to the end of my hose. Remember: lawn sprinklers haveNObusinessanywhereinaflowerorvegetablegarden.Yourhandheldspraygunhas no purpose in the yard at all unless you’re washing your car….end of rant and thanks for the read.

Protect Your Business From A 'Phishing' ExpeditionThe term "phishing" has become so widely known that it's a wonder such fraudulent schemes are still effective. However, phishing, a term used to describe online account holders being de-frauded of financial information -- including their bank account numbers -- by criminals, still occurs to millions of people each year.
Though once considered a crime that went after just individuals, phishing can potentially harm businesses as well. In addition to the negative public relations implications of being associated with a phishing scam, even as a victim of the scam, businesses can now unknowingly enable criminals who can rather easily use a company's Web site to engage in criminal activity.
When a criminal wants to use a legitimate Web site to conduct criminal activity, the scammer will create an illegitimate site deep within the structure of a business' legitimate Web site. Such sites can go undetected for long periods of time, and while active these illegitimate sites can solicit consumers' private information, including credit card numbers. By the time enough people com-plain that their private information has been compromised, a business' Web site has already been used, its reputation has been damaged and the criminal has accomplished what he set out to do.
Business owners can, however, take steps to reduce their risk of being victimized by a phishing expedition.
* Emphasize protecting the firm's computers. Protecting your company's computers should be of the utmost importance, and it's something that is an ongoing process. Utilize the latest soft-ware to filter spam, establish firewalls and protect computers against viruses and spyware. Many manufacturers provide automatic updates with their software, ensuring that business owners' computers will be fully protected with the latest software for years to come.
* Utilize a data security firm. Data security firms can prevent spam and viruses from finding their way into employees' e-mail inboxes and provide reports on how likely you are to suffer a data or security breach. Such firms can also protect servers from hackers.
* Educate your staff. Perhaps no precautionary measure is more important than educating your staff about phishing scams and other prospective data and security breaches. Make sure your staff knows not to sign in to bank or credit card accounts from links they are sent via e-mail. Instead, visit the Web site separately by typing its URL into the browser, and only enter personal information on Web sites with the padlock symbol.
Staff should also be taught to ignore e-mail attachments they aren't expecting. Such attachments may contain spyware software, putting the user's and the company's information at risk. Instruct employees to contact the sender via the telephone when they receive suspicious attachments before they open or download them.
When discussing security with your staff, refresh their memories about specific online security scams, including surveys that promise prizes in return for participation and e-mails asking for financial information.
Data breaches can happen to anyone, even businesses. Emphasizing security and educating em-ployees about potential scams is one way for business owners to reduce their risk of falling victim to phishing expeditions.
