THE POTENTIALLY HARMFUL EFFECTS OF MOLD IN YOUR HOME

The presence of mold in a home is a sight few homeowners want to see. In addition to being unsightly, mold found in a home can be unhealthy.

While certain cleaners may prove effective at removing mold, homeowners who want to remove existing mold growths and prevent future growths may benefit from gaining a greater

understanding of mold and why it grows inside homes.

What is mold?

Mold is a blanket term used to describe fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. Many species of mold exist, and the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention notes that some es-timates suggest there may be more than three hundred thousand different species of mold. Common indoor molds include cladospo-rium, penicillium, alternaria, and aspergillus.

Which conditions promote mold growth?

Homeowners may notice that mold tends to grow in specific areas of their homes but not in others, and that’s because molds grow best in certain conditions. Warm, damp and humid condi-tions, such as those found in poorly ventilated bathrooms and basements, make ideal breeding grounds for mold.

What are the effects of mold exposure?

Molds are a natural and resil-ient part of the environment,

but mold growth indoors should be addressed and avoided. Mold spores are tiny and invis-ible to the naked eye, and when these spores attach to wet surfaces, they begin to grow. Once these spores begin to grow, they can then affect people in various ways. Roughly a decade ago, the Institute of Medicine found sufficient evidence to support a link between exposure to indoor mold and respiratory tract issues, such as coughing and wheezing in people who were otherwise healthy. The same report found that mold may trigger asthma symptoms among people with asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a disease in which the lungs are inflamed when a person breathes in certain dusts he or she is allergic to, in people suscep-tible to that condition.

Some people who do not have a preexisting condition can still be sensitive to molds. When exposed to mold, such people may experience symptoms like nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation.

How can exposure to mold be decreased at home?

Adequate ventilation is arguably homeowners’ best friend with regard to reducing mold ex-posure at home. Control humidity levels in areas of the home that tend to be warm and hu-mid, such as the kitchen and bathroom. Install an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathroom and a window in the bathroom if yours does not already have one.

The CDC recommends that humidity levels be no higher than 50 percent throughout the day, and an air conditioner and dehumidifier can help you keep indoor humidity levels in check, especially during the summer when humidity levels tend to be their highest of any time dur-ing the year.

When renovating your home, remove any existing carpeting from bathrooms and basements and toss out soaked carpets or upholstery as well. If painting will be part of your home reno-vation projects, add mold inhibitors to paints prior to application. Mold that grows inside a home is unsightly and potentially unhealthy. But concerned homeowners can take several reactive and proactive steps to reduce existing mold growths and prevent them from return-ing in the future.

SAVE WATER BY STOPPING LEAKS EARLY (NewsUSA) - Water is a limited and essential resource, but too many people are unaware of how much is wasted. Believe it or not, the average American family uses more than 300 gal-lons of water each day, and 70 percent of that water is used inside the home.

Unfortunately, much of that water is wasted without a homeowner’s knowledge.

Water leaks are among the main sources of wasted water in the home, accounting for as much as 13.7 percent of a household’s water use. That’s more than the top household water uses, which include taking a shower, running the dishwasher or doing laundry.

However, some simple tips can help homeowners conserve water, prevent damage caused by leaks and save money on repairs caused by water damage.

Launder Less

Do fewer larger loads of laundry instead of more smaller loads. A larger load uses less water per pound of clothes.

Delay Dishes

Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it; a half full load wastes both water and electricity.

Improve Appliances

Data suggest that high-efficiency water-saving devices, such as low-flow showerheads and toilets, could save U.S. households 5.4 billion gallons of water and $11.3 million each day, and the low-flow devices that are currently available don’t sacrifice water pressure for effi-ciency. But if more efficient bathroom fixtures aren’t an option, simply taking shorter showers can save two to five gallons of water per minute.

Get a Grip on Leaks

New leak detection products can help homeowners identify leaks early, so they can be managed before water damage sets in. The FloLogic System, for example, serves as a circuit breaker for the plumbing system in the home, sending an alarm and shutting off the water supply when a leak is detected. This early detection feature is key to preventing water dam-age associated with an unidentified and unrepaired leak. As an added bonus, some insurance companies will provide discounts to homeowners who install systems such as FloLogic

REDUCE PESTICIDE POLLUTION AT HOME Commercial farms are often blamed for the vast array of con-taminants that find their way into water supplies and the soil itself. But home-gardening enthusiasts may also be contami-nating water and soil through the use of pesticides.

Data from Green-NetWorld, an environmental advocacy group, indicates Americans use approximately 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year. Pesticide use is a prolific problem. More than 100 active pesticide ingredients are sus-pected of causing cancer, gene mutations and birth defects. In addition, a growing list of pesticides may disrupt the im-mune and endocrine systems and have long-term impacts on infants and young children. Research indicates that many pests targeted by pesticides will eventually develop resis-tance to these pesticides, rendering the chemicals useless.

One way to reduce chemical pollution at home is to find al-ternatives to pesticides.

• Investigate reduced-risk pesticides. The United States En-vironmental Protection Agency is examining pesticides that pose less risk to humans and the environment than existing pesticides. Homeowners concerned about pesticides can vis-it www.epa.gov to learn more about reduced-risk pesticides.

• Use biopesticides. Biological products, also known as biopesticides, can play a role in a more sustainable food chain. These control agents include fungi, bacteria or viruses and can be applied like chemical pesticides but do not leave toxic residues. Furthermore, they are relatively inexpensive to produce.

• Look to the kitchen. Dish soap can be an effective pest killer. Fill a spray bottle with soapy water and spray around the ex-terior of your house and on plants that have a pest problem. The soapy water can kill ants and roaches. It also can coat the wings of small flying insects. Catnip is another natural pesti-cide. Planting catnip in a garden can repel mosquitoes.

• Use epsom salt. Sprinkling this salt on the leaves of plants in the garden can keep away animals, such as deer or ground-hogs, that would otherwise devour plants. Epsom salt also can repel beetles, slugs and snails. Before homeowners turn to chemical pesticide applications, they can explore many natural remedies to keep unwanted pests at bay.

AUGUST IS NATIONAL CURB APPEAL MONTH: TIPS TO GIVE YOUR HOME A FACELIFT

(StatePoint) Want to get your home noticed? There are many ways to add value and design appeal to your house’s exterior, and doing so is important, say experts.

“If you're selling your home, updates add value and curb appeal. And if you're staying long-term, these improvements will boost the functionality and form of your home for your own enjoyment,” says JJ Rogers, sales operations manager with Fypon, a manufacturer of decora-tive millwork elements. Rogers and the experts at Fypon are offering some tips on projects to consider in time for August, which is National Curb Appeal Month.

Think 24-Hours

If you think your home's curb appeal matters only during daylight, think again. After-hours curb appeal can be just as important.

“A well-lit home has a warm, welcoming glow and adds to the security of the home," says Rogers,

Here are some ways to light up the night with evening curb appeal:

• Place solar-powered lights on walkways and key land-scape areas to create safe pathways and highlight the home. Flank the entry door with lights for guests’ con-venience, and to better see

who is visiting after dark.

• Replace burnt-out bulbs and do a good cleaning of light fixtures.

• Install motion sensor lighting to make it easy for visitors to safely enter your driveway, while helping to deter burglary attempts and to know when roaming animals are in the yard.

Daylight Curb Appeal

• Replace rotting wooden trim, shutter, louvers and balustrade systems with easy-care poly-urethane products that require minimal upkeep while resisting insects, decay and moisture.

• Accent the tops of windows by adding a crosshead and keystone.

• Never underestimate the power of flowers. Adding window boxes, as well as planters on the porch, steps or throughout the yard, instantly increases curb appeal.

• Add a low-maintenance timber or smooth polyurethane trellis system over a garage entry to add dimension and appeal to the door you drive through daily.

• Install a Door Surround Kit around a home's entryway. Each kit comes with a set of pilasters to flank a standard single door and a decorative crosshead to "sit" on top of it. Fypon offers these kits in Colonial, Craftsman and Empire styles, plus a different variation in Stone.

• Add pops of complementary color using a top- down approach. Start with the roof, then work your way down to siding, trim, doors and landscaping. For a free "FRESH Color Schemes for Your Home Exterior" ebook, visit fypon.com/design/.

Makeover Your Door

Your home’s entryway should be welcoming, beautiful and energy-efficient. For a chance to make this important home upgrade for free, homeowners can enter a 2015 Door Do-Over Sweepstakes sponsored by Therma-Tru, for a chance to win a Classic-Craft or Pulse fiberglass entry door system valued at $5,000. Enter online throughout August at www.todayshome-owner.com/DoorDoOver.

Keeping home exteriors clean, clutter-free and colorful can go a long way toward boosting curb appeal. Take time to focus on the beauty of your home’s exterior with a thorough clean-up and strategic upgrades.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF HIRING A PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPER

The flowers are blooming, and the grass has begun to grow anew, making spring a great time for homeowners to once again turn their attention to landscaping. Those who aren’t looking forward to dusting off their lawnmowers and re-threading their string trimmers may want to hire professional landscapers to tend to their lawns and gardens.

A recent joint study by the National Gardening Association, Residential Lawn and Landscape Services and the Value of Landscaping found that homeowners spend roughly $45 bil-lion per year on professional lawn and landscape services, as nearly 30 percent of all households across the United States use at least one type of lawn or landscape service. The ris-ing use of lawn care services is indicative of homeowners’ appreciation of the convenience and craftsmanship profes-sional services can provide. While the impact professional landscapers can have on a property’s aesthetic appeal is con-siderable, homeowners also benefit from working with pro-fessional landscapers in various other ways.

• Time savings: One of the biggest benefits of leaving lawn care to the professionals is the amount of time it will save for the average homeowner. Lawns generally need to be mowed once per week during the spring and summer seasons and, depending on the size of the property, that can take an hour or more. Add the time it takes to clean up clippings, mulch landscaping beds and edge the property, and homeowners can expect to devote a significant chunk of their weekends to caring for their lawns. Lawn services employ a few workers who make fast work of the job, leaving homeowners time to enjoy their weekends however they see fit.

• Reduced risk for injury: Maintaining a landscape is hard work, and those un-accustomed to this type of activity may find them-selves winded or at risk of injury. Improper use of lawn equipment also is a safety hazard. Leaving the work to professionals can help homeowners avoid strained backs, lacerations, pulled muscles, sunburns, and any other dangers that can result when tackling landscaping projects.

• Financial savings: On the surface, hiring a landscap-ing service may seem like a costly venture. However, after crunching some num-bers, many homeowners realize that doing the work themselves may cost more in the long run than hiring a professional landscaping service. Homeowners who decide to go it alone must purchase expensive equip-ment, and those lawn tools will require routine main-tenance, which costs addi-tional money. Inexperienced homeowners may incur extra fees to “fix” mistakes that occur during the learn-ing process. Each year, new seed, fertilizer, mulch, pes-ticides, and other supplies also must be purchased. But professional lawn care ser-vices typically charge a set fee per month, and that fee covers the maintenance of both your property and the equipment needed to keep that property looking great.

• Know-how: Many profes-sional landscapers know

how to address lawn care issues that may arise throughout the year. They will know how to deal with dry patches of lawn or poorly draining areas, and they also can make recommenda-tions on plants that will thrive under certain conditions.

• One-stop shopping: Certain landscaping services provide many different options for pro-spective customers. Basic lawn cuts may be one package, but there also may be services for seasonal seeding, weeding, leaf clean-up, and winterizing.

• Consistent maintenance: Homeowners who frequently travel or spend much of their sum-mers away from home often find that lawn care companies are a wise investment. Established weekly schedules ensure the landscape always will look its best whether homeowners are home or out of town.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. This is the time of year when gardeners get to reap the rewards of all the effort put forth in spring. There are vegetables to harvest and enjoy and flowers to admire and cut for bouquets. This is what it’s all about. Sure, there’s weed to pull here and there’s watering to do but, basically, these are the days we like to step back and smell the roses. During this quiet time, I’ll take a bit of a break too and let you (hopefully) enjoy the little story of how I was introduced to the Amaranthus family. One day many years ago, I was telling my girlfriend (now wife) Sharon about an Italian lady in Mont Pleasant who used to sell plants from her backyard garden and small greenhouse. The last time I’d been there was in the late 70s. It seemed unlikely that she was still at it but we decided to see if we could find it. Amazingly we did and, as I’d expected, it wasn’t really a going concern. I knocked on the door and the quiet old gardener answered the door. Sure, we could look around even though there wasn’t much left to see. Well, there was enough to see that we ended up picking her brain for 45 minutes. We bought a Voodoo lily and she let us harvest the seed pods of the purple malva that was growing everywhere. Just before we left I asked her about the large purple plants that were overgrowing a neglected raised bed. “You want some amaranth? Sure.” she said as she ripped a few of the 3’ plants out by the roots and rolled them up in some newspaper. Since it was a midsummer day of about 90 degrees, I was amazed by this rough treatment by someone who, it seemed, should know better. She must have picked up on the concerned look on my face, “You pop ‘em in and water ‘em, they’ll be fine.” We thanked her for letting us look about and for the plants and departed. By the time we got home, the bare root amaranthus were a wilted mess. “Pop ‘em in and water ‘em, they’ll be fine.” Seemed wildly optimistic at that point but, I did as I was instructed. After I’d popped them into a whiskey barrel planter, I soaked the soil and sprayed the foliage with water (which you know I HATE to do). Almost as an afterthought, I poked some stakes into the soil and tossed some burlap over them to shade them from the hot afternoon sun. ‘Oh well,’ I thought, ‘I can always throw them out tomorrow.’ The next morning, I was out in the yard putzing about with some other garden chore when I remembered the sad amaranthus in the barrel. ‘Might as well toss them in the compost pile.’ I thought. When I flipped the burlap back, lo and behold, the amaranthus looked as if it had been growing in the barrel all summer! This little experience taught me two valuable lessons. First, when an old Italian gardener tells you something, believe it! Second, for a durable, 3’ purple annual, nothing beats amaranthus. So, we enjoyed our barrel full of amarnathus for the rest of the summer and even saved some of the seeds. Sharon started a couple of dozen under the grow lights the following March so we’d be able to enjoy them for another season. They sprouted quickly and grew like weeds. Perhaps it was an omen. By the time planting season came around, the amaranthus were out of control in their little plastic packs. Even with all the ripping and tearing I had to do to separate them, they recovered nicely and took off like a shot once they were in the ground. By mid-June, it was apparent that there had been no need to start any indoors. The barrel they had been planted in the year before was choked with “volunteers”. Not only that, they were sprouting in the cracks between the patio pavers and in the lawn in a 4’ radius all around the barrel. As the season progressed, I began to notice them popping up in all sorts of odd places throughout the yard and gardens. I could only assume that the birds had had a hand in all this. With so many seedlings, I’ve been able to experiment. Purple amaranthus are a great contrast to the taller artemisia’s silver foliage. I’ve planted them around the base of my 3’ purple cannas for a “wall of purple”. Since I love silver, blue and purple in the garden, I’ve had a great time with my self-sowing purple amaranthus. Imagine how enthused I was when I saw something called ‘Elephant Head Amaranthus’ in a seed catalog. More next week. This all occurred about 20 years ago and I’m still enjoying the amaranthus and the malva (Zebrina as it turns out) in my 2015 garden. Thanks for the read.
