It took staring down death forKathy Stigler to truly appreciate thebeauty and fragility of life.
Diagnosed with Stage IV lungcancer in October 2012, the 55-year-old Hartford resident hasturned a daunting and devastatingstruggle into a positive.
"I learned the lesson that life istoo short," she said in a recentphone interview with the Express
News. "Every day I wake up andthank the Lord for another day. Ihave been so blessed and right nowI am just trying to live my life to thefullest."
An unwelcome visitorreturns
At the time of her diagnosis, themother of three and grandmother offour was already well-acquaintedwith the insidious monster known ascancer. As the main caretaker forher husband, Ken, for five years atthat point, Stigler had already facedmore than her fair share of the med-ical drama that goes along with alife-or-death health scare.
For a half a decade, the dotingwife tended to her husband's needsas he battled Stage IV skin cancer,
and for her that was more difficultthan her own diagnosis.
"That was the hardest time in ourmarriage, because I hated seeinghim like that," she said of her hus-band of 34 years. "We have had areally great life together and afterall these years, we can still say welove each other."
In July 2012, the tables turnedand after developing a persistentcough that turned up as she helpedher sister move, the caretakerbecame the patient.
My sister and I were doingdeep-cleaning and de-cluttering oneweekend and when I went to workthat Monday, I developed thiscough out of nowhere and I justcouldnt get rid of it, she recalled.
Believing it was allergies to ani-mal fur and dust, Stigler was treatedwith a steroid. This initially workedwonders, but only briefly. When thesteroid failed, Stiglers doctor decid-ed a chest X-ray was in order andthats when her life was turnedupside down. The X-ray showedfluid around her heart and lungs aswell as two masses.
"I asked my doctor, 'Could thisbe cancer?' and she said, 'Yes, itvery well may be,'" Stigler shared. "Itold her, 'Well, then lets deal withit.'"
The masses were, in fact, lungcancer, despite the fact that Stiglerhad never smoked. In the drama thatfollowed, a bronchial tube wasplaced, the smaller of the twotumors was removed and Stiglerslung was punctured during a biopsy, requiring a 10-day stay in theIntensive Care Unit.
Although she thought that hadreadied her for the worst, Stiglerwas still leveled by the official diag-

(NAPSI)-Colder weather does not
have to cast a chill on your energy budg-et. By winterizing your home, you canenjoy increased warmth and comfort andlower your heating costs, which can sig-nificantly increase energy savings.
Here are some steps you can take: Caulk, patch or weather-strip any
areas around windows and doors thatmight allow cold air in or warm air out.Your fireplace, too, is a source of heatloss, so close the damper when the fire-place is not in use.
Put storm windows in place. New,insulated glass windows can provideimportant energy savings. However, ifyou cannot afford new windows, consid-er covering older windows with plastic
sheeting.
Check insulation in your aings, exterior and basement waland crawl spaces to see if it meetels (measured in R -values) recomfor your area. It's also wise to water heaters and pipes to minimloss.
Replace or clean filters heating unit to improve airflow aciency.
Schedule an inspection of ytem by a heating professionapumps and oil-fired furnaces neeal tune-ups; gas-fired equipmentserviced every other year. Proftechnicians are usually trained tleaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded e
contacts and frayed wires.Next, take advantage of grammable thermostat and set perature lower when you're asleeping.
Finally, if you need to replahome heating unit, consider a nace or heat pump that meets stafor high efficiency, measured asfuel utilization efficiency (AFUE)naces and heating seasonal ance factor (HSPF) for heat pumhigher the AFUE or HSPF, the mcient the unit and the more likelyto save energy and money.

nosis of Stage IV lung cancer."When you hear the words 'You have
cancer,' I don't care how prepared youare," she said. "When he said 'Stage Four,'I asked how many stages there are and hetold me there are four stages like it's com-mon knowledge. But what I wanted to knowwas how did I get to Stage Four when I hadnever felt stages One, Two or Three? My
doctor told me that's why they call cancer'The Silent Killer.'"
Fighting the battleAfter she was informed she had cancer,
Stigler wanted all the cards laid out."I asked, 'What does this mean to me?'"
she said. "I was told the cancer was incur-able, but treatable."
Encouraged by her doctor that she wasyoung and strong enough to face herenemy with good odds, Stigler forgedahead with the battle of a lifetime.
First off, she decided to seek furthertreatment at Cancer Treatment Centers ofAmerica at Midwestern Regional MedicalCenter in Zion, Ill., where her husband Kenhad been treated for his skin cancer andwhich the couple held in the highest
esteem.A 16-year resident of Lindenhurst, Ill.,at the time (Ken and Kathy moved toHartford in July 2013 for work and familyreasons), Stigler said she felt "blessed tohave this wonderful facility just a half hourfrom my house," and when she and Kenchose their new location, a requirementwas that it had to be within 90 minutes ofthe CTCA.
"I love my doctors and what they doand I didn't want to change that," saidStigler.
When she first came to the CTCA,things did not look good.
"Kathy initially presented quite sympto-matic from her lung cancer," said Dr. BruceGershenhorn, Kathys medical oncologistat CTCA. "Her respiratory status was socompromised that she could not even com-plete a full sentence without extreme diffi-culty."
Her medical team started Stigler onchemotherapy infusions that "sucked thelife right out of me," she said. Doctors cred-ited their patients "cheery disposition andstrong faith" as the forces that kept hergoing. "My doctor told me, 'We're going todo this,'" Stigler said. "But I could barelytalk or walk. I was so drained."
Turning pointThen came the discovery that changed
everything.Doctors discovered Stigler had ananaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) muta-tion, meaning she was a candidate for anew type of targeted medicine that provedeffective in certain lung cancer patients. The rare mutation, which stimulates cancercell growth and metastasis, can be shutdown by a new drug called Crizotinib, according to cutting-edge research.
"My doctor had an ear-to-ear grin,"Stigler said. "He said he had the bestnews."
On the market for just two years,Crizotinibtaken orally twice a day for therest of Stiglers lifewould target just thetumor and, more importantly, save Stiglerfrom the hellish experience of chemothera-py.
"Up to that point we had been doingchemo infusions and that was horrible," shesaid. For a week every month I was downfor the count, I was t hrowing up, and I wastold I would have to do that for the rest ofmy life. God put the mutation in me for areason. It's very rare.
Going on the medicine was a "no-brainer," she said. "On the chemo we werelooking at 30 to 40 percent odds of sur-vival and now we're at 60 to 70 percent."So in December 2012, Stigler began tak-ing the drug, which, thankfully, at a cost of$10,000 per month, was covered by insur-ance.
Just t hree months la ter she had remark-able results. Her bronchial tube wasremoved and the tumor had shrunk."Everyone saw a difference in me," she
said. The next scan showed no shrinkage inthe tumor, but Stigler was assured that as
