The Loretta Lynn's race was his third win of the season in what wasthe series final. Austin said he was excited at the final result.
"It was a beautiful kind of experience. There was so much joy forwhat I had worked for this year," he said.
As for the future, Austin said he plans to race "as long as my bodywill take it."
For Evan Clemens, it was his third full season on the tour. Evan saidthat he and his brother started at the local level before going to thenational level.
According to Evan, he was essentially learning his first year on thetour in which he tried to pace himself with the other riders. Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderfulpatients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoingsurgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayersfor a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind ourreadership about one of the many important reasons to see
their dentist regularly.According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be
42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral orpharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths.
Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head andneck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% ofcases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chanceof spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cellcarcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makesoral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appearsas a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancercell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as aresult of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repairthemselves.
Where can oral cancer appearin my mouth?Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue.
It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arisefrom many types of tissue in the mouth including salivaryglands and lymph tissue.
What should I look for?Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does
not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesionon the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually palecolored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An earlywarning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or ared patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues ofthe mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when thetumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongueproblems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain maybe a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless.
How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not?A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion.
However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benignand malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A non-invasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out thepresence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method fordetermining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present isthrough biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopicevaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous.
What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determinedto be cancerous?
Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical
incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area inquestion. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can alsobe used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, andsize of the lesion.
What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer?People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are
at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are peoplethat have been diagnosed with HPV or Human PapillomaVirus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which MichaelDouglas recently associated with his throat cancer.
Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposureto radiation may also be at higher risk.
We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for yourcomplimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease thatcan be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental weperform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a newpatient and at each re-care visit!

Another option for recreation activitiesdebuted in Jackson this fall.
A groundbreaking was held for anarchery range at the Jackson Town HallPark Sept. 12.
When reached for comment last week,Jackson Joint Parks and Recreation DirectorKelly Valentino said she first proposed thearchery range to the Town Board in fall2011, which voted to move ahead with theproject. According to Valentino, in spring2012 intern Billy Welacha laid the ground-work for the development of the range.Welacha worked with Barb and NorbYogerst, who run an archery program
through a 4-H club.
I dont think this project could havehappened without their guidance,
Valentino said.In addition, Valentino said Cade Alcoxmade several parts of the archery rangepart of his Eagle Scout project, while mem-bers of Alcoxs Boy Scout troop 765 con-tributed with spreading mulch and in organ-izing the dedication ceremony.
Valentino said that in addition to beingused for recreation programming, 4-H Clubsand local scouts will be using the range. Shesaid the facility is a recreational rangefocuses on families and instruction.

BYMELINDA MYERS
Theres no doubt that managing critters inthe landscape can be a challenge especiallyas food supplies start to dwindle. If you arebattling with rabbits, deer, groundhogs orother wildlife, don't let down your guard as thegrowing season begins to wind down.
Be proactive. Start before they get into thehabit of dining on your landscape. It is easierto keep them away than break the dininghabit.
Fence them out. Fencing is the bestdefense against most wildlife. A four feet tallfence around a small garden will keep out rab-bits. Secure the bottom tight to the ground orbury it several inches to prevent rabbits andvoles from crawling underneath. Or fold thebottom of the fence outward, making sure itstight to the ground. Animals tend not to crawlunder when the bottom skirt faces away fromthe garden.
Go deeper, at least 12 to 18 inches, if you
are trying to discourage woodchucks. Andmake sure the gate is secure. Many hungryanimals have found their way into the gardenthrough openings around and under the gate.
A five foot fence around small gardenareas can help safeguard your plantingsagainst hungry deer. Some gardeners report
success surrounding their garden with fishingline mounted on posts at one and three footheights.
Break out the repellents. Homemade andcommercial repellents can be used. Applybefore the animals start feeding and reapplyas directed. Consider using a natural productlike Messinas Animal Stopper(www.Messinas.com). It is made of herbs, safeto use and smells good.
Scare em away. Blow up owls, clangingpans, rubber snakes, slivers of deodorantsoap, handfuls of human hair and noise mak-ers are scare tactics that have been used by
gardeners for years. Consider your environ-ment when selecting a tactic. Urban animalsare used to the sound and smell of people.Alternate scare tactics for more effective con-trol. The animals won't be afraid of a snakethat hasn't moved in weeks.
Combine tactics. Use a mix of fencing, scare tactics and repellents. Keep monitoringfor damage. If there are enough animals andthey are hungry, they will eat just about any-thing.
Dont forget about nature. Welcomehawks and fox into your landscape. Using lesspesticides and tolerating some critters, their
food source, will encourage them to visit youryard. These natural pest controllers help keepthe garden-munching critters under control.
And most importantly, don't give up. A bitof persistence, variety and adaptability is thekey to success. Investing some time now willnot only deter existing critters from dining inyour landscape, but will also reduce the risk ofanimals moving in next season._
